This place is def a hidden gem of the Somerville area. One may argue if there was no Mount Vernon there would no me as it was my parents' place to go while they were dating. Ok..this is a solid New England style restaurant dishin' up lobster to your standard Italian classics. I really like this restaurant because their portions are big and the staff is really nice and makes you feel at home. For a restaurant so close to the city they do have a private parking lot which is great and free to park. If you are looking for a place to bring the kids or a large group I recommend the MV. Very disappointed in the lobsters lately. You would think the cook would know when you're serving two people the same dish at the same table that they would be of equal size. They do this all the time and it drives me crazy. Lobsters are supposed to be a pound and a quarter and I would highly disagree that they are, I could be wrong. My friend and I will not go back for lobsters again, very disappointed the other night. Even had to send one back because it was bad. Really? Had lobster again and they were small but tasty. For the price of lobster, this place is cheaper than downtown, but it's still expensive in winter. Just like the price of twins lobster is 32.99 in winter, but 15 in summer. We ordered the lobster roll and lobster with baked stuffed. The stuffed on the lobster is too much cause the taste too salty, and the meat of lobster roll is a little bit un-fresh. First time here at this establishment. I must say I was very impressed with the food and customer service. Every thing was on point. For a side street pub,it comes with great vigor and hospitality. So disappointed! Ordered the Baked Salmon Rockefeller which stated the Lobster was "piled high with Lobster meat," poached spinach and hollandaise sauce. The entree was delivered to the table and it was nothing like was described in the menu. The salmon was dry, and there was one piece of lobster meat on the plate the size of large shrimp. There were four pieces of spinach on top the the salmon and a heap of hollandaise sauce. They charged $32.99 for the meal (Note: The same meal on the menu in their website lists the price at $26.99) and it was not what was described. There were five other entree's delivered to the table as well, one being Prime Rib that was very dry. I realize that I could have sent the entree back however, it was Father's Day, the restaurant was crowded and the servers were so nice I didn't want to make a scene. Mount Vernon is a local restaurant recommended by my friends who had lived in Boston for a while. I was visiting Boston for a few days and wanted to try reasonably priced lobsters in a none touristy area, as well as get a good feeling of the life of local residents. Lobsters: I ordered the twin lobsters special. Two 1-lb lobsters for $29, which was the best price I have seen so far. The lobsters came uncracked. The moment I cracked open the first claw, fresh warm juice sprung out from the opening. I immediately put my mouth towards the notch like a desert wanderer who found a coconut falling from the tree. That was early April and the lobster juice was the sweetest and freshest I have tasted in Boston, compared to other big name restaurants tourists go. The body of the lobster was ok. Tasted similar to lobsters from other places. Interestingly, I found that leaving the lobster body (after peeling off the shell) on the plate and letting it cool off a little gives it a more chewy texture, which tasted better than when it was still hot, which had a rougher texture. Such technique is not necessary for the claws as they were very juicy. The butter that came with the twin lobsters tasted too fatty for me and seemed lower quality than the average seafood restaurant. However, the lobsters themselves were flavorful enough and hence I did not need the melt butter. Clam Chowder: Clam Chowder soup was delicious, although I am not critical of clam chowder soups. People: The waitress was very polite and enthusiastic to my friend and I. The customers were mostly seniors and working people. They were curious about us, and greeted us with smiles. read more

We came to this location for my mother's birthday today. The service was mediocre with a slight attitude. The food (overpriced) was also mediocre. With that being said I'm being nice. My mother got the scallop casserole. The scallops were not cleaned properly and she felt as though she was crunching on sand the whole time. I got the lobster macaroni and cheese that was loaded with processed bright orange cheese and minimal lobster. The lobster I actually did find had a huge piece of cartilage in it. Without questions, the best place in Boston to order Maine lobster! The prices here are unreal. Where else can you sit at a restaurant and eat two 1.25 pound Maine lobsters for $20? This place has been in business over 75 years! They offer a relatively large menu with about 50 items to choose from, all offered at a very low price ($8-$15). I have never seen such low prices for the items on this menu. On this occasion I ate 4 lobsters (What would you do if you were visiting from San Diego?). Even though I was stuffed with food, I had to order their steamers. I don't normally eat them, but once again, I was in Boston so I had to try them. Delicious! These guys know how to cook. If there was a downside to this restaurant, it would only be the look inside and the fact that you feel like you are in the ghetto. In order to reach this restaurant, I took the Red Line to Sullivan Square and walked under the freeway a block. It was only a 3 minute walk, but I don't think I would attempt it at night. Once you make it to Mount Vernon, the inside feels like you are at a stripped down version of Denny's (no offense, it just seemed very bland, plain, and stark). I love everything about The Mount Vernon. The service is always a good mix of friendly but sassy, the food is good, and we always leave with leftovers. Odds are, you have a 95% chance of being the youngest table of people on the dining room side on a Monday when all the old folks come out for the discounted twin lobsters. Or most nights, actually. Back to the service, the waitstaff is always very friendly and accommodating, no matter if you're on the bar or restaurant side. Can you think of another place where you're going to get popovers? Me neither. They are good here, and if you're like my dad, you're gonna stash those babies in the purse of your dinner companion and eat them up for breakfast with some jelly. The popovers are always hot when they hit the table for optimum butter meltage when they get smeared. If it's seafood you're looking for, this is the place for you. I've tried the twin lobsters, and boiled is absolutely the way to go. There's a stuffed lobster, and while the stuffing is good, it's very rich. It's messy and fun and very reasonably priced. Along with that, any of the seafood dishes are tasty. If you love eating multiple creatures from the sea in one dish, I suggest the seafood scampi. The scampi has lobster meat, haddock, huge, delicious scallops, and shrimp atop a cheese filled fresh pasta and broccoli in a buttery white wine sauce. I also enjoyed the broiled scallop dinner, which was a lighter dinner and delicious. For seafood starters, I would suggest the lobster bisque. It is so good, and I totally know that the next time I am sick I am sending Mr. Moos here to pick me up some. The Mount Vernon also offers a nightly dinner for two: Sunday: Turkey Dinner (Somerville) $20.99 Monday: Prime Rib $20.99 Tuesday: Baked Haddock $20.99 Wednesday: Veal Parmesan $20.99 Thursday: Extra Thick Pork Chops $20.99 Friday: Baked Scallops $21.99 Saturday: Roast Beef $20.99 You can't cook at home for those prices, and what I've tried has been really good. The prime rib is awesome, and the pork chops are massive! I say avoid the peas as a side, but other than that, everything is good. They also run monthly specials, and I finally tried the June special, which is chicken cacciatore, and it was super tasty. The red sauce was rich and flavorful, the linguine was cooked perfectly and definitely fresh, and the peppers and onions barely cooked so they have a wonderful crispness. The monthly specials are usually $12-13 on average for dinner. One side note: there's very few meat free options, so if you're vegetarian, you'll probably be eating pasta, salad, or delicious fried things. Drinks here can be fun. They have a Mount Vernon brew on tap, and that runs you $2.50 a glass. So cheap! It's a basic light beer, but for $2.50, you can't beat it. Cocktails are massive and on average will set you back around $7-8 for a specialty beverage. The pineapple martini will totally get you drunk in one swoop, and I enjoyed the refreshing pomegranate mojito. I am not sure what basic well drinks cost, but I am sure it's reasonable. They offer keno and scratch tickets on the bar side to round out your bar experience. The Mount Vernon also offers breakfast during the week, and a brunch buffet during the weekends. I haven't made it in, but I am sure it's crazy. I know there's a carving board along with typical breakfast fixings. The Mount Vernon is an experience. There were 6 of us, Mothers and Daughters. We were there for Mother's Day. We have never been there before. It's a hidden gem. They had a brunch/lunch buffet that was second to now. The interior is very old and tired looking, but once you go through the buffet, you forget all about your surroundings !!! Every kind of breakfast food you could imagine from homemade dounuts, to pastry, delicious. I had the scrambed eggs that were great, no liquid, firm and fluffy. Bacon cooked to perfection, sausage, homefries, hash browns. Your standard breakfast food. Also, eggs benedict, pancakes and french toast for your sweet tooth.... Onto Lunch, roast stuffed pork, ham, baked chicken, prime rib, out of this world, so tender. Italian they had chicken parmesan, stuffed shells. I didn't try that, also all kinds of fish dishes, which I also didn't try. Everyone else did and said it was all delicious and cooked to perfection. The desserts were pretty standard, eclairs, cannolis, cookies, carrot cake, french macaroons. As you can tell by my ranting, that I loved the place. Our server Kathleen was absolutely fabulous. We never had to wait for a drink, she was always there for anything we needed.....It was a pleasure to chat with Marty Sr, and Jr. They make you feel like you are so welcome. Sunday Brunch is THE BEST BRUNCH DEAL in Boston!! Well, I did not expect much but went there for lobsters in the end of September. I found out a good deal on their FB with $10.99 for brunch. So we had brunch first then lobsters. The brunch is all-you-can-eat buffet excluding drinks. They offer fruits, hot dishes, Bacon, Sausage, Ham, Made-to-Order Omelette Station, Waffles, desserts, and RAW BAR including fresh oysters, clams, and shrimps!!! We are so happy with the buffet. Everything tastes good especially the raw bar and fruits. some of the hot entrees are not my cup of tea. so pass! You should try raw bar if you are an oyster lover. We finished the brunch and decided to make our lobsters take-away. Do notice that the price they show outside of the restaurant is not the price for take-out. Other reviewers totally nailed the ridiculous brunch buffet, with one glaring omission. While some dudes note that the buffet includes donuts -- easily its most salient feature, prime rib be damned -- everyone totally dropped the ball on noting where said donuts came from. Where they made in-house? Picked up from Donut & Donut down the street at Sullivan Station? Were they just powdered donettes from Stop n' Shop? I had to know, which is why my wife and I dropped like $17 each one Sunday. And, for the record, they're more definitely from Demets in Somerville. I'd recognize those fancy new Demets dulce de leche's anywhere. They also had a few raised glazed and some honey dips. All Demets. And while Demets might not be the dopest donuts in Somerville, they're good enough to do the job at hand, even if, assuming each donut's worth about $1, you'd have to eat a dozen and a half to recoup your buffet investment. Or, if you're a total square, I guess you could make up the difference with unlimited fresh oysters and perfectly rare prime rib or something. The prices alternate and can be anywhere from $19.99 to $9.99 (!!!) - for TWO very well portioned lobsters. They were fresh, perfectly cooked, and the meal comes with their incredible popover bread, which is seriously delicious. All the reviews of poorer service/"this place is not fancy" had me worried, but the staff we came in contact with were above and beyond helpful and friendly and the dining room (the room off to the side, separate from the bar) was clean and welcoming. Been coming here for over 50 years with a relocation break. Since coming back to the area, I have had 3 meals, brunch and dinner (twice) and each was a lesson in "boy is this place has changed for the worst". Visit 1 was a roast beef sandwich and a Caesar salad. Both were fine. Visit 2 was Sunday brunch which had a lot of items that were well past their time to be removed from the heated tray. The eggs were hard, the eggs Benedict was a mess, the seafood casserole was actually cold, the manicotti were tepid and not edible, etc.. Our third trip was their lasagna and for my fiancé the steak tips. The lasagna was not very good, the steak tips Beat the battle of the knife versus the meat, and to top it off with the bartender, who has been there for so many years, displayed some of the rudest behavior I have ever witnessed. Local, locals, locals. You can see the sign from route 93 and it is easy to get off and on easily. They have a decent selection on tap. The bartenders and servers have been here a long time and great the regulars as they enter the building. Oh, there are two parking lots to park in right behind the restaurant, don't park across the street in the little lot you will get a ticket if your meter runs out. I had the sliced lamb with side of ores and French fires for $8.99. The ores were canned but still good to have. French fried thick and cooked just right. The portion was generous, great home cooked meals at great prices!!! They have banquet rooms, a bar, and restaurant all in this building that is deceiving on the outside. The Bartender used the work "wicked" and the other bar tender yelled to a local as he was leaving "don't let the door hit ya in the ass in the way out"at seem rude but it really sis not come across that way, hey it's a local! Just no. It's terribly bad. Our waiter, although extremely nice, had on a filthy shirt that was once white, now more of a dingy beige, with food stains all over it. I am pretty sure the shirt is just hung up after every shift and put on the before the next shift. I am also pretty positive that the shirt has never met Tide, Gain, Xtra, a washing machine or even dish soap in a sink. While I have never managed a restaurant I'm quite certain the cleanliness of my wait staff and their attire would be mandatory. Anyhow, moving on. We were seated in a room because there were several of us. No one could sit at the head of one end of he table because of the leak in the ceiling due to the air conditioner. Why is the AC running when it is 40 degrees outside before you factor in the strong winds of the day? Hopefully you're not looking for an answer because I don't have one. From the looks of that ceiling it wasn't a new problem. My suggestion would be to get it fixed, but maybe that's a crazy suggestion. Again, moving on. I had already heard about the "murky" water that had been served but had hoped it was just a cloudy glass. Nope! I got a glass of my own for proof. I did a little experiment. Poured some regularly colored water into an empty glass and then poured my questionable water into the empty glass. The water was definitely not clear, as drinking water should be. Gross. Now food. Knowing that the place is pretty gross we decided to go with basic selections that didn't require too much preparation. Buffalo chicken, a BLT and some onion rings. They were ok because you don't have to flavor bacon and buffalo does it's own thing. My parents got two different meals and both complained that there was no taste. If all you're looking for is friendly, patient waitstaff then this is the place for you. This was the first time my family visited Boston and I was really excited to bring them here. But it turned out I was wrong. When the lobsters were served, they were cold. It's not " icy- cold" but " room temperature cold. " When we complained to our server, she said " it's cold outside but hot inside, see?" After we let her to open one of our lobsters, she herself found out that lobster was really cold inside and she went back to heat it up again. We also ordered a prime rib, the server didn't ask us how do we want it cook, she just assumed we want medium well, so we get a medium well steak. Moreover, their steak tasted like what I bought from Safeway or other grocery stores. It's really hard and dry. When the check came, we found out the server mandatorily put 20% tips on our check, tho I don't think she deserved a 20% tips. We asked her why there's a 20% tips and she argued she's been here for 12 years and she ALWAYS DID THIS. I said, from 2014-2016, I came here several time and I never been charged for a mandatory tips. She then argued " Oh sometimes we did this and sometimes we don't." I thought you just said you always did this, and now you changed your mind? Normally I gave out 20-25% tips at this restaurant, since they charge it mandatorily, I just left it blank. The seafood platter had lackluster French fries, was excessive in amount of onion rings and there was no lobster meat, as advertised that there would be on the menu. So at over $30 with tax and tip, for that dish alone, it felt like a con job. The twin lobsters were way over $30 their current market price and way overpriced for meh chick lobsters. We've been here many times before but came here on a Wednesday night to try the chicken parm dinner special, including soup or salad, a dessert, for $11.50 pp or $23 for 2 people. Four people in my group had chicken parm, one had grilled salmon with raspberry sauce. The chicken parms were each about the size of my palm, and were delicious. Dessert choices were grapenut pudding, chocolate pudding, or vanilla ice-cream. On top of these generous offers, this restaurant serves popovers. We always bring our own jam to add to the butter. The saltiness of the butter plus the sweetness of the jam go perfectly with the popovers. Our waitress Penny was very friendly. One person wanted broccoli instead of salad, another person wanted extra sauce. All were accommodated. Good food + price + popovers + service = a great experience.
