We booked this hotel because it was right in heart of town and was walking distance to shops and restaurants. The check-in process was pretty seamless but there were a few hiccups while we were there. We were there around mid-Nov so it was shoulder season right before ski season starts. We were able to get a great price for the stay too - ~$600 for 4 nights, great deal. My few complaints were that the walls were PAPER thin. I could hear people walking by and talking in the hallway and outside. There were drunks outside yelling and I could hear everything. Not sure if it was cause our hotel room was facing the street. The parking is extremeeeeely limited. When we arrived, it was already going to overflow parking. No one really uses their car in town so you're unlikely to see a spot free up over the course of your stay. Overflow parking is roughly 7 mins walk from the hotel. We also had issues with outdated signs of happy hour times and was mislead. The staff was friendly but idk if I can overlook these issues when I'm considering accommodations for the future. It was a "fine" stay but not great. For the price, we felt it was OK but if I paid more it definitely would not have been worth it in my opinion. read more

I booked this hotel primarily to watch the skijoring event, which takes place on the street in front of the hotel (however, there is no space inside of the hotel to watch the event from, unless maybe you have a room with a window that faces the street, which I didn't -- but my window did face the rear and I got to watch all of the horses unload!). It was really cool seeing all of the dressed up cowboys and cowgirls in the lobby. It did make parking a bit tricky though, as a lot of the roads were closed off. There was ample parking in the back of the hotel, it was just difficult to find with all of the road closures (it's to the left of the bus parking if you're facing the hotel; look for the little signs). Aside from that, the rooms were VERY soundproof; you could hear people walking in the hallways occasionally, but I never heard anything from anyone else's room. Honestly, it was probably the quietest hotel I've ever stayed at. The staff were all friendly and the service was quick. My only complaint is that they don't offer room service, despite having a restaurant on-site. The shuttle to the ski resorts run hourly, and I was always able to get a seat, although one time it looked like only half of the group was able to make it on (this was for the 10:50am departure), but it's possible they were waiting for a different shuttle, and if not, I'm sure another shuttle was not too far behind. The shuttle took about 20 minutes to get to Sunshine. Overall, I'd stay here again! read more

Do NOT stay here if you're sensitive to paint and varnish fumes. Our tour group stayed at this hotel, which was chosen for us by our tour group. Our room reeked of varnish. They recently renovated the place and the rooms are pretty cute, but I couldn't spend any time in there before I started to get a migraine and feel nauseated from the varnish smell. (Mind you, I do NOT get migraines but this room triggered one.) I hate when folks deny stuff like this and that's exactly what the front staff did. "We don't smell it." I told the they were gaslighting and then they denied gaslighting on top of it. The morons offered to get some room perfume to cover over it. Of course, for those who are sensitive to varnish fumes, that would just add more problem and not cover it up. They had no alternatives and offered a breakfast coupon as the "solution." They didn't get that it's not an option to spend time in a room like that. They only considered it an "inconvenience". Anyway, a migraine and mast cell attack later, I had to cut my trip short and leave the tour altogether after having to spend time in varnish VOCs. read more

The best part about this hotel is the location. Beyond that, it's pretty expensive for what it is, and it looks a lot nicer online than it is in person. For one, they struggle with a lot of small things. There were no water bottles in the rooms or vending machines anywhere on the property. The hallways reeked of vinegar and bleach every day, and it didn't seem as though our rooms were cleaned beyond replacing the towels and making the bed. The staff wasn't super friendly and didn't seem eager to offer service or answer questions (both at the front desk and up at the lounge), and areas of the hotel felt somewhat run-down. The common areas seem to get the majority of the attention, while the rooms are comparatively lackluster. All of that said, the hotel is in a great location in the heart of downtown and is close to a bus stop. All depends what you're looking for! read more

Enjoyed staying here. Requested a quiet room on high floor prior to arriving and they were very accommodating. We did come in off season though.. So Banff wasn't full of drunkies. Slept really well and superb location. Elevator smells like waffles bc cows ice-cream is right under the hotel. Parking is very reasonable at $5 per night charged upon checkout. Oh and the rooftop hot tubs were great with a beautiful view! However, keep in mind there are only 2 hot tubs, each big enough for 4 people max. read more

Ok so I will admit the walls are super thin. It's annoying that tours that leave in the AM are A holes and slam their doors early in the morning but to be fair you would hear that in any hotel. Staff was super friendly room was pretty clean. The location was great right on the street and then out the back was the bow river hiking trail. Parking can be an issue we got the last space so again I could see how people could be pissed but I'm rating my experience. Arrived 4:30pm and room was not ready, receptionist was nice and gave us a token for (1) free glass of beer or wine, which we appreciated but had traveled several hours and just wanted to shower. No vending machines on floors. Says self-service laundry but you need the front desk to open the laundry room for you on the first floor, plus they only accept coins, which is a bit annoying - most other hotels had credit cards. USB's in rooms to charge phones did not work. Stayed at 4 different hotels in Alberta, this was my least favorite. Restaurant Brazen was good and the cocktails were very good! read more

Location is perfect and worth every penny. Book it if it is available. It is in the center of town, less than 2min walk to all restaurants. A lot of parking space too, which is huge because parking downtown is tough. Rooms are very standard. Aesthetically was great. Two queen beds room for four people was good, no sizing/fitting issues. Cost honestly wasn't that bad. Compared to other areas I was looking at, it was a lot cheaper, so that was surprising because the place was so nice. Less than a 40min drive to some of the Banff/Lake Louise/etc beautiful sights. There's a restaurant/bar inside the place, plus a hot tub too! Didn't take advantage of it but that's a plus. After renovations, we found this was a great stay in Banff, and definitely worth the value. We stayed in the Centennial room with a king bed and it was smartly decorated and furnished in a modern kind of way, without being too obnoxious. Spacious for a single room and more comfortable than similarly priced places in other ski towns. Fantastic hot tubs on the roof with views of the surrounding Rockies and a nice rooftop lounge as well. Really friendly and helpful staff. Ski lockers just outside the main doors to store your stuff. They give you the key so you can access at any time. Also, the shuttle to Sunshine and Lake Louise ski resorts are just behind the hotel, which is super convenient. It's right in the middle of town so everything is in a very convenient walking distance. We had a wonderful stay. Good value! read more

During our there night stay a significant number if your groups were come and going which made there lobby chaotic at times. I booked this hotel for an extended stay as they offered rooftop hot tubs. Paid a premium for this amenity and was disappointed that they were not working my entire stay. While they offered me admission to the outdoor hot spring it was a car ride away and not a hot tub but more of a pool. Was looking forward to evenings in the tub looking at the mountains. Asked about a discount but was turned down. If hot tubs were working this world have added one star. I hope management realizes that people who book for a specific amenity published but not available deserve some considerations. read more

This is hands down one of my favorite hotels, and I have traveled around the world. The small intimacy of the hotel along with some of the friendliest staff made our accommodations lovely. This hotel is located in complete central Banff Avenue, as opposed to being on one end of town like most. Prior to arrival, we called to ask for a room with a view because we were celebrating our anniversary. Not only did we get a spectacular view but we got a few surprises upon arrival!!! I really wish I could use fancy words like intimate, historic and vintage feel. But that would really be stretching it. There really isn't much to say about this hotel that is exceptional or great. Or even good. It just happens to be in a good location if you don't care where your unconcious body is at night. However, it would be a great place to stay if you just need a place to rest your head and you paid some ridiculous sale price. Otherwise, don't expect much. Central downtown Banff location, old building, that really needs to be refurbished. The carpet is really used and looks like it's seen traffic from more decades than I have been alive. Watch out for nails under the carpet, we stepped on the tip of a nail coming out of the carpet between the bathroom door - remember to step over where carpet has been joined. We checked in a tad early and the front desk person was very nice. But when we checked in later, the front desk attendant was someone completely different in all aspects. Parking is in the back, although it looks like a big lot, half of it is for buses but there are a few spots and the others were covered by piles of snow. Why would you shovel snow into vacant parking spots??? Oh, yeah, cause no one stays here anyway. The building itself stretches itself parallel to Banff Avenue so if you get a room at the other end of the street, it is best to haul your luggage outside, down the street and back in through a street level door. I have no idea what Paul B. is referring to either because we had a "prison window" that didn' t open and we had a view of NOTHING. Seriously looking into the abyss of sorrow and misery. The chairs and seating in our room were stained and gross, none of which I would like to even put my stuff on. The bell service people also straight up refuse to do their jobs. Expect to haul your own luggage, in your very own bell trolley. And when you are doing this, also expect to uphold traffic as you navigate this trolley through a narrow hallway while people behind you get annoyed that they can't get through......and then SURPRISE! YOU GET TO SOME RANDOM SET OF 5 STEP STAIRS and then have to haul ALL your bags the rest of the way. NO ONE mentioned this to us. Fail fail fail. I've stayed at my fair share of economy lodges but this one wins ALL the awards. read more

There are two big flaws with this hotel, that makes it really not worth staying at, given the huge amounts of other hotels in Banff to choose from. Noise: All the rooms have poor sound insulation, despite being brand new. You can hear neighbours next door, people in the corridor coming home late at night, and noise from outside. They even give earplugs in the rooms because they know of the noise issue. The worst thing? Half the rooms face the busy busy main street of Banff, and some rooms face this noisy bar playing dance music till the early hours of the morning. So if you're not the party type, avoid. Service: I had emailed before my stay to request a quiet room. And then two days before my stay, I had even dropped by reception to ask for a quiet room, and the "note" was passed on to the management team. Turned up - they assigned me the worst room, the one closest to the noisy bar at the back. Only at 1am in the morning, when I went downstairs, did they then provide another room (why not give that if it was available to begin with?) At checkout at 9am, I asked to speak to a manager, and was told that the manager only comes in later in the morning, like 10-11am. Wow. What kind of hotel has a manager that comes in late? One that likes to miss all the customer complaints, I bet. I left my number and email, and asked to be contacted by the manager when he gets in. That was 7 days ago. No contact. When there's so much choice in Banff, why choose a hotel where you have a high chance of not getting a good night's sleep, or if things go wrong, no manager to help you sort out the issue? read more

10 stars if I could!! Drove into Banff for our first wedding anniversary, stayed here and were blown away by the service and attention to detail. They were tipped off to our anniversary when my parents called in a bottle of wine to be put in our room. Not only did they do this, but they set up an amazing display on the bed with a card signed by the entire staff congratulating us on our anniversary along with drink vouchers for their top floor bar. Ok the pictures are way outdated. I should have taken some during my stay last weekend. The hotel reopened in July after a fire. It's now super nice!! We showed up on the day of, asking for availability after getting a refund from the hotel we originally checked into. The guy at the front desk of Mount Royal was awesome. Super helpful, friendly and chatty. He gave us a double queen room for a discounted price - which was great considering it was for sat and sun nights. They let us check out the room before we agreed since it was their last one. The room decor is really nice. They have historical pics in the room which is neat. Not just your standard bland hotel pic hung randomly on a wall - you can tell they took care here. The bathroom is really nice with a deep tub. Comfy beds, safe, fridge and nespresso machine in the room. They do offer ear plugs in the room for street noise but it wasn't an issue for us at all. We didn't hear anything. Not high season though. Roof top hot tubs were a real treat! And they come with a bartender. We sipped wine in plastic wine glasses while enjoying a mountain top view. The patio is heated too - so it's not bad slipping out of your robe and into the hot tub. The other great thing about his hotel is the LOCATION. It's right in the heart of Banff. Everything is in walking/stumbling distance - including the Rose and crown pub next door. Would definitely stay here again. read more

Not hugely impressed. It seems like a fairly well oiled machine of mediocrity. The exterior and lobby are attractive and impressive, but the rooms themselves are a little lacklustre. We were hoping they'd ask us how our stay was when we checked out, but it didn't seem that they particularly concerned. We paid for a king sized bed but it was definitely a queen. The room was just kind of small and stuffy with no ability to open a window. The hot tubs are nice, but there's a limit of 4 people per tub and no time limit, so it ends up being a passive aggressive game "stare down that stranger until they get uncomfortable and leave." This hotel is very overpriced for what it is and frankly I would have liked to save the extra $80-100 and booked a hotel further down the strip. If you choose to stay here, you're paying for the location and not much else. read more

Great location in downtown Banff! Walkability to restaurants, pubs & shopping is perfect. The hotel is divided into different sections/wings and it was quite a trek to our room (down the corridor, make a turn, 5 steps down, which was super fun with luggage, and another couple of turns). Even after the workout of making it to the room, it was nice, clean and cozy and we had no issues with noise. All of the staff were helpful & friendly. I had a very comfortable stay here just last week. The beds were very comfy and clean, the shower had lots of hot water and good pressure, and the staff was friendly and kind (they happily allowed us a late check-out even though they were swamped with guests coming in for the film festival). Is it an old building? Yes, so the rooms have awkward spaces (bathroom was a bit cramped) and the halls are narrow, but that building is over 100 years old -- it appears in all the old historic photos of the town. How cool is that? Much too cool to care it's not as roomy as a hotel built in the last five years. Location was phenomenal -- a block away from everything, it seemed. Spas, shopping, a bakery (nice to munch on a croissant while you pack up), and lots of the best restaurants and bars in town. This hotel also has its own lot (right around back), so you can park your car there and never touch it again 'til checkout. If you simply want a comfy, clean, and convenient place to stay in Banff, then this place is a great option. I will happily return my next visit to the mountains. read more

We had the best room in Banff!! Room 200 at the Mount Royal Hotel. With a corner view overlooking Banff Ave and - Cascade Mountain - it was hard to watch television! It is the view from the middle of Banff Ave - except you are tucked away warm, dry and comfortable in your hotel room! OK, on the down side, the flooring needed refurbishing and the street noise (from midnight to 3 a.m.) would not be acceptable to everyone, but oh that view! From the pink rays of sunrise painting Cascade to the mid day views of Vanilla Ice (ask a local) to the red/blue sunsets - the mountain was always a sight to enjoy. I wished I was a painter who could just set up in the room for days and work away. As a hotel we found the staff friendly and accommodating. They delivered a corkscrew to the room within minutes of asking. Parking is free at the back although it is more likely that you will have to park on the street in busy times. The hot-tub was OK with some heat but very little water movement. Being right on Banff Ave it was a fantastic location for popping out into the -15 degree weather for some strolling. It is close to everything downtown. In addition to the view, I must comment on the bed. It was fantastic with a great mattress below and a thick comfy comforter on top. All this and the price suited out budget. If you can't stay in #200 - maybe you can tip the bellboy to let you in for a minute to check out the view! Its worth it. read more

I have nothing but good things to say about the Mount Royal. The price was reasonable, the staff were friendly and the room was great - without asking we were upgraded to a 2 room suite with a fabulous view of Banff Ave and the mountains. The rooms were clean and pretty with lovely crisp white duvets (no creepy polyester bedspreads!), there were several extra blankets and towels and not one but TWO irons in case we got the urge to venture outside unwrinkled. Flat screen TVs in both the living room and bedroom, a corkscrew, real wine glasses, a bar fridge and an electric kettle (I'm a tea drinker so this won extra brownie points!) were nice little extras. St. Patrick's Day can get pretty rowdy in Banff and there is a pub attached to the hotel (thanks for the good time Paddock Pub!) but we really didn't hear much noise and we were facing Banff Ave. It IS an older hotel and the hallways are a bit cramped and crowded but whatever...so are a lot of places. If you're looking for a quiet or romantic getaway maybe look for something on the other side of Banff but if you want a hotel that is clean, nice and right in the middle of all the shops and restaurants look no further! I will definitely return to the Mount Royal, just wish I could have stayed longer... read more

Perhaps I shouldn't be reviewing a hotel room, as my husband and I are pretty happy as long as we don't come home with bedbugs (and thankfully, that's never happened). We only spent one night, but we enjoyed our stay at Mount Royal Hotel. We had an incredible view of the mossy roof below and Tunnel Mountain beyond. Our room was pretty cool, IMO, and I couldn't stop from thinking it was our kind of place because there was a bottle opener attached to the bathroom counter. The ceilings were high, but the room was cozy and definitely felt somewhat old-fashioned. My in-laws had a room with a broken (and quite noisy) fan, but were quickly moved to another (an upgrade, even!). We were able to park directly behind the building, which almost seemed unthinkable in Banff. As we visited in June, Banff itself was quiet and the hotel was no exception (though I did overhear a few elderly Floridians complaining that it felt "like winter" outside--lulz). Breakfast was not included, but I really would prefer hotels give up the "continental" thing rather than disappoint me yet again. I'd rather not feel compelled to eat the breakfast just because it's free. read more

Below average on a great location. Old-fashioned, needs remoddeling. Bathroom was so old that there was even an (dismantled) ashtray, worn-down and dirty carpet. Windows can't open, airconditioning isn't much. With 15-18C outside, it isn't able to cool inside to the same temperature, room (265) door is hard to close, housekeeping woke us at 08.15, after the alarm from the previous guests gone at 0630. We weren't able to stop it. And on top op it, very ' cool' lights. Like in an factory. Good points beside the location: good shower, good cotton sheets and thick towels. $300 got me a suite. It was on floor 4 and hard to find. Dated as in 1990. Must have seen some ski parties in its day, and it shows. Wowsa. Smells like smoke, carpets are rippling off floor. I have stayed at the Mount Royal Hotel in Banff on two seperate occasions. I would say the room both times was at an affordable price, great basic room with a great view of Banff Avenue and the mountains. It has everything you want for a hotel in a little ski town. Great location in the heart of the town, clean rooms with up to date furniture, free parking, free wi-fi, secure ski and board storage room, hot tub and on-site restauraunt and pub. I stayed on a saturday night as well as a sunday night. It's true it can be loud on a saturday night with your window facing the avenue, just request a room away from the avenue and it should be fine. On a sunday that I stayed, there was no noise problems with my window facing the avenue on this visit. The staff was accommodating and very friendly. I recommend this hotel as a great option for a downtown Banff stay. read more

This place is a decent spot, however the Wi-Fi here just sucks hey.. It's unfortunate, because after a long day of snowboarding I kind of wanted to just unwind and stream a movie. I only give this place a star because Yelp won't let me choose no stars. This hotel is absolutely DISGUSTING!!!!! For $275 a night, you get a room so small that you touch each wall while sitting on a queen sized bed; severely outdated and cheaply constructed furniture; noisy hallways and plumbing; carpet so stained you don't dare go barefoot; no parking spot; a view of the dumpsters; one shower towel; a tv with poor reception with no remote; and AC and heat that simply do not work!!! The owners of this hotel should be ashamed to ask the price they do and the town of Banff should be more concerned about the impression places like this leave on the many tourists that visit this beautiful area. One liner: Employees of this place are rude. They will ruin your vacation. This is Aug, 2013. I have made reservation to this hotel through Expedia.com for Five Days. I understand this hotel is in Ski-Resort and there are not many newly-constructed hotel at reasonable price. But my experience with Mount Royal hotel is at "any cost it does not worth your money". This is not a new hotel, and my exception was not much either. But on first night (at 3:00AM), I learned that their Air-Conditioning unit, when turns-on make a whistle-sound which can be heard from a mile(like old factories) for 10-15 mins. Then it goes away. I called the front desk thinking, it was some emergency, they say no big deal it is their AC unit. Second night, Room will not cool down, with AC temp set at 60F and outside temp at 50F, Room will not go below 80+F(we were sweating). Next day I went to front desk, saying AC is not working. Receptionist (Lewis) says that he will come to our room and check. He checks the unit and says Air-conditioning unit is blowing air cooler than your room-air; so it is working. I said but the Room is not cooling. He says, that is not his problem but AC is working and he cannot do anything about that. After hearing it three times, I said I am going to call expedia and ask my money back. He says Go and Ask Expedia but we will not do anything and will not give your money back. He SLAMMED THE DOOR, LEFT IN THE MIDDLE OF OUR CONVERSATION. This place is very RUDE. I am calling expedia, .... It will ruin your vacation. Below average stay in a great location. This place is conveniently located right in the heart of downtown Banff. Only so many things can fit in their downtown core considering it's only 2-3 blocks long lol. You are across the street from liquor stores, food, shopping, clubs, and lounges. Pretty much all you need at your door step! So we arrive late at night and checked into the hotel with 4 adults. We hurry up the elevator and took a long walk down to the room only to find 1 bed. Really???? Sure no problem, we'll just sleep on each other. Grown ass men! It was an honest mistake and I was grumpy and tired, but shouldn't you know? About 10 mins later we get another room and at least this time they got it right. So the layout, starting from the underground up, you got the pub downstairs and hotel hot tub, lobby and Tony Roma's Restaurant, and business center on the 1st floor. This hotel pretty much stretches across the length of the block, however there are only 3 elevators that we discovered during our stay here. One in the lobby (slow), one about 10 meters away (the faster one) near the parking lot entrance, and the last one is allllllllll the way down the hall near the secret exit (half way down the block). The hotel itself is pretty old, you could tell. They have renovated it to look more modern and at least got some flat screens in there, but they should do a little more. One of the rooms that we visited, the toilet wasn't fastened to the floor that well so the fear of falling over while trying to wipe your derriere was greatly experience by some. Shower curtains that didn't quite hold all the water in the tub which we had to clean up from time to time. I guess we did the housekeeping a favour cause that bathroom floor was spotless after we dried it up. TV channels were mostly fuzzy and the rooms were lacking outlets so sat in dim rooms as we happily caught up with our work back home. Thin walls and doors allowed us to creep on other rooms with was entertaining.... Take the walk to the shower for the men's was pretty nasty considering you needed to walk pass the dirty wet washrooms after the hot tub. Make sure you got flip flops!!!! I don't mind this place being older or the misleading pictures, because the price was ok for the location in town. We parked at the hotel and pretty much walked everywhere and stumbled back with no problem at all. The pictures of this place is misleading and are smaller than they appear. The picture on their website is probably an upgrade version, the 2 bedrooms we got barely had space for us and our gear. I would have given this place 3 maybe 4 stars, but I'm -1 star for a special conversation we had with the GM. So it all began on one cold Banff night. We were a bit rowdy and coming back from the club. We came in the hotel and proceeded towards our room. I wasn't quite with my group the entire time, but I did notice them greeting fellow drunkies in the hall. We arrive at our room and were maybe out there trying to find our key for about 30-45 secs before some half naked old man came out and told us to be quiet. Ok, we just got here and were aren't the only ones out here in this hallway, but ok no problem, "Sorry sir, we are just trying to get into our rooms. Have a good night and we'll keep it down." We stay up and chatted a little longer before we passed up. The next morning we received a call from the big man himself, the General Manager. What does he have to say to us? We were being loud all night in the whee hours of the night (oh, I didn't know we partied at the hotel). Six rooms complained about us (really, they pointed us out out of all the rooms). He wasn't going to "PRESS CHARGES" it was our last warning otherwise he was going to evict us (don't talk to me like we are f*cken children now). Most of us wanted to march down there and give him a piece of our mind. We held our tongue out of respect of the CC holder, but I guess that's why there's also Yelp! Oh how I love you Yelp! I understand noise complains are bad for other guest, but threatening your other hotel guest is worse. There are many other ways to handle this situation in a way that much better than that. We aren't the only people coming back from the club at that hour, it just happened to be that one room that just popped out and saw us so we became the scapegoat in this situation. How are we suppose to know how loud we are if we are inside the room. How about your staff address the issue immediately rather than telling us afterwards. The situation was poorly handled by the General Manager and I would rate this place 0 if it was based on costumer service, however I am going to give this place 2 because of location and I'll be reluctant to refer people to this place. read more
