Nice bakery with a focus on pastry and desserts. I went in for a loaf of bread but was informed that they did not make bread. I grabbed a pain au chocolat and it was very tasty. If you get a croissant and are planning to eat it there I would ask them to warm it up a bit because it's 10 times better that way. I was also eying the mint brownies but decided that would be for another time. The inside is cute and cozy. The staff member was very nice and gave me some info on where I could maybe find a nice loaf of bread nearby. read more

What a fantastic pastry selection! My mom and I have been on a mission to find the best scones in Bar Harbor, and Mount Dessert Bakery comes out on top. We tried the dried tomato/cheddar/sweet onion scone (my personal favorite) and strawberry scone, and both were delightful. Visit in the morning if you want access to the full array of baked goods that this shop has to offer. Since this bakery is a popular spot, they run out of some items in the afternoon. Updated - 11/20/2020 - the owner did reach out and apologise so I'm bumping this up to a 4*. 5* for the food. 2* for the service. My bf and I stopped here around 11am for breakfast before heading to Acadia National Park. There was no crowd and maybe 2 customers ahead of us. We ordered a plain bagel w. cream cheese and Robyn's Fave but I needed to use the restroom so we walked over to Hannaford's as they did not have a public restroom. When we got back, my bf checked in with another staff who had just started her shift it seems like to see if our order was ready as it was easily 10 min plus. We were a bit surprised with the off-putting tone the lady used with us to tell us no.. our order wasn't ready. Totally okay with the customer service received by the lady who took our order (and the older lady who handed us our order at the end) but just that one experience with the other lady made us think twice about returning. We were asked to wait outside (totally understandable as it's COVID) but again, the tone felt so disrespectful. Although we will still recommend this place to our friends who will be visiting Maine, I do think sensitivity/ customer service training is needed... Our food was bombtastic so definitely no complaints there. The bagel was rich in all the perfect amount of ingredients and it's definitely a cute shop and go to for some brekkie. read more

I got here in the afternoon and unfortunately but understandably they were out of most of their baked goods, but I managed to get a blueberry scone that was absolutely lovely! This place is mind blowing!! I'm a huge baked good snob, and this is one of the better bakeries I've ever been to in my life. I love how they're classic American recipes, yet done sooooo well! You will not be disappointed one bit. Their sandwiches are served on homemade focaccia bread. I had the turkey BLT and it was just so good! I had no idea the bread was going to knock it out the park! Again, probably the best focaccia bread I've ever had. So tender of a crumb, great flavor, topped with coarse salt and rosemary. It wasn't too oily, like some focaccia can get. The tomato was very ripe, definitely sourced locally oppose to a standard shipping/grocery store/produce provider. Now, on to their baked goods. Very tender crumb, sign of small batch since they're not over mixing. They also use quality ingredients, which is very much noted in taste. I did see a Penzys sticker on the side of their refrigerator. I had both the blueberry coffee cake and muffin, well, I am in Maine... Both are stellar, but my personal favorite was the coffee cake. The best sellers are the lemon ricotta cake, banana bread, apple cheesecake bars, and mint chocolate bars. The different cashiers said their favorites were the lemon ricotta cake and pumpkin cinnamon donut. Tasty sandwiches and baked goods!! Get your sandwiches on the focaccia by the way, as it makes any sandwich 10x better. I had the tuna melt and savored every bite, the caramel used onions were a great sweet contrast. I got a coffee cake for dessert and the flavor was great, but it was a little dry unfortunately. I also got a matcha latte with oat milk, but the matcha powder was not blended in all the way and it made for bitter chunks throughout the drink which I was not able to finish. I love the idea of Mount Dessert Bakery -- fresh pastries and sandwiches made on freshly baked bread. In reality, half the items we tried to order were out of stock at 12:30 pm, and what we did receive was underwhelming at best. If you're here for the pastries, go on. We didn't order any of them so our impression is based solely on the lunch options. I ordered the California Dreamin' on focaccia sans goat cheese, along with a grilled PB&J sandwich. The California Dreamin' wasn't terrible, but the bread was super soggy and the flavors underwhelming. I added some avocado to mine, which helped, but ultimately the best part of it was the focaccia, at least the parts that weren't waterlogged with pickled vegetable juice. I'm vegan, which I assumed the grilled PB&J would be too (I was expecting it to be panini style), but when it actually arrived, it looked to be fried in butter. I would verify this with the shop, but be wary if you're looking for a vegan option. Finally, everyone else in my group had equally meh sandwiches (Ana Maria and grilled cheese). If you're looking for the best bagels and baked goods in bar harbor, look no further. After visiting our second morning we went back everyday. I loved their selection of lattes and vegetarian options. I know the region is known for blueberries but don't overlook the other fruit pastries, they are delicious! One to note is the fruit and oatmeal bar, yum. Any combination of bagel and cream cheese were great. The blueberry cream cheese was not to sweet, the everything bagel had so much flavor, and the Asiago had a nice crunch on top. You can't go wrong with anything here! I usually don't write reviews but I couldn't help after my morning experience. After an early morning hike at Acadia National Park my family arrived at Mount Dessert Bakery. After reading dozens upon dozens of amazing reviews I was excited to try their coffee and food. 7am we arrived as they opened. The inside of the storefront was closed and a takeout/order window was open. Very quickly a line started forming. With the line barely moving people slowly began dropping out and walking away. Again, eager to try their "raved upon" food I proceeded to wait. 7:30am I was up to order and was told they did not have Iced coffee, the focaccia bread for their sandwiches (so I subbed for a bagel) or any pastries besides muffins. In total my order came out to be 3 small coffees and 4 bagels at the price of $30. Waiting in the September cold outside more and more people began leaving. Many customers received incomplete orders which they then had to wait on the side for to be fixed. Some customers were waiting in line for 30+ minutes (at least) for orders they had called ahead for. Once 8am hit I received my 3 coffees but not the 4 bagels. After about 5 minutes my sister proceeded to meet me (wondering where I was this whole time) and asked if our food order was ready. Especially since a few people that were behind us got their food orders. A young women assured us that she would go check up on the order in back and let us know after asking us to remind her exactly what was in each bagel. We then waited till 8:30am for her to come back and let us know that they couldn't seem to find our order in their receipts. She then asked if we preferred to wait for them to "manually" put our order in (with pen and paper) or take a refund. After waiting a total of an HOUR and a HALF, although hungry, we restored to the refund. The same women directed us to go back to the young man that took out order and ask for the refund. He then proceeded to pull up the RECEIPT with our order that was apparently lost?? He used it to see how much each item was and then says "ok just refund for the bagels". So basically instead of refunding the full 30 dollars with the 3 small coffees on the house, they handed us back a 20 dollar bill without a single care. To which I ask - Should you not give a full refund if we waited a whole ADDITIONAL 30 minutes for something we never got? I don't know where these good reviews are coming from but I know we wasted 2 hours waiting for a BAGEL that we didn't even get. I wish I had spent that time hiking and stopped by a Dunkin' Donuts instead. These people have no clue what they're doing and lack basic customer service skills and common courtesy. Future customers: Next time don't believe everything you read and READ THE ROOM. We should have left as soon as we saw others complaining and walking away. This is your business, learn to treat people right. read more

ALSO, they had two Game of Thrones mugs!!! Yup, I took the one that said says "Mother of Dragons" - Coffee was just fine - Chocolate pumpkin cake was more than fine - We bought a Maine blueberry pie to go and I went home cut up a giant piece and put vanilla ice cream on that ish and really. We wanted a quick breakfast to grab and go so we could get out to Acadia for hiking. We had an everything BLT bagel and an everything bagel with peanut butter. The bagels we very good and fresh. We really enjoyed them The only challenge was the grab and go. We waited about 20+ minutes in line before we ordered and about another 15-20 minutes to get our food. I was here today at around 12:45. I ended up ordering an iced mocha, cheese bagel with cream cheese, double chocolate banana bread, and a piece of blueberry cheesecake. The cheese bagel and cheesecake were outstanding and I highly recommend them both. (Seriously get a piece of a cheesecake.) The iced mocha was pretty weak as far as the taste of espresso goes and the banana bread was a bit dry. Pass on those. I was being assisted by a very sweet cashier and appreciated her customer service. However, the barista on bar with green hair could use some training in her tone/customer service. When I asked a question (my first and only!) about what kind of frosting was on a cupcake (to the cashier not the barista btw) the barista yelled from behind the counter "IF IT'S ON THE SAME PLATE THEN IT'S THE SAME FLAVOR. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS IT'S COVERED IN GANACHE." You would I had asked 100 questions by this point with how she responded. Ultimately, it was her attitude that prevented me from ordering more as I no longer felt comfortable asking simple questions. read more

Absolutely wonderful! We picked up pastries here a few times during our stay and loved everything. HIGHLY recommend the cinnamon roll and hazelnut croissant! The blueberry coffee cake and scones were also excellent as was the double chocolate banana bread. Also, THE MIXED BERRY PIE!!!! Breakfast sandwiches were solid and made on tasty bagels. Oh, and the FOCACCIA!! So freaking amazing. Basically just get everything. The week we came up was also my birthday and my people surprised me with a cake from here (chocolate hazelnut) and it was AHHHHMAZING!!! Pastries are good but we had poor service. We ordered 2 drip coffees, a tea, and a mocha, and two pastries, and the woman , who took our order, did not give us our pastries. When we got our mocha, we politely asked if we were going to get our pastries and the woman stared at me as if I hadn't just ordered with her two minutes ago. Once I calmly explained we were waiting for our pastries that we never got, then she begrudgingly gave us our pastries. I wouldn't write this review except for the fact, she waited on two other people after me, who also ordered pastries, and she was wrapped them theirs immediately. I don't know if I wasn't being helped because we were clearly tourists or if we were Asian. Either way, the experience left a sour taste and I won't come back. read more

There are only two places I've ever actually really enjoyed a scone at - one in the collegetown i used to go to, and now here. I had the raspberry scone and it was so LIGHT and flakey, also not overly sweet, almost like a buttery and flakey biscuit...which is so different from the usual puck-like scones I've had everywhere else. I also ordered the butterbeer latte, less sweet, and that with the scone was the best way to fuel for the Precipice Trail later that day.
