Checked out Mott 32 after a friend recommended it, and it's definitely a solid pick for upscale Chinese comfort food! The Lobster Mapo Tofu is a big crowd favorite for good reason. The lobster was fresh and bouncy, and while the meat portion was a little on the smaller side, the sauce was fantastic over carbs. The fish-fragrant eggplant claypot was cooked until tender and flavorful, though it's fairly standard if you eat at a lot of traditional Chinese spots. The real winner of the night was the soy sauce fried rice with shredded duck. Our server recommended it, and each grain of rice had a great chew and slight sweetness, spooning the mapo tofu and eggplant right on top was pure perfection. Mott 32 Vancouver was recently voted the best Chinese restaurant in Canada, and you'll get no argument from me. I certainly haven't been to better. First off, the place is stunning, not in an overdone or overly elaborate way, but with just the right touch of traditional and modern character. The menu is extensive both at dinner and especially at lunch, where there's even more dim sum available. We started with the hot and sour soup, which is extremely complex and flavorful. Then we shared the Peking duck salad and the Marinated Cucumber and Pomelo. It's hard to pick a favorite and not give both of them a perfect 10. The duck salad was perfectly balanced between dressing and the complex aged duck strips and lots of fresh greens, while the cucumber salad had complex flavors that had also seeped into the pomelo, which was not overwhelmingly citrusy. I think it's my favorite cucumber salad of all time. Those three dishes would certainly have been a meal, but we just wanted to try a few other things. We also shared the crab meat fried rice (a very generous serving), the chive dumplings, which were baked (an approach I had not seen before with dumplings), and the BBQ pork buns, which were also baked. They were all very good, but maybe not quite as good as our first three dishes. The BBQ pork buns were almost more like a dessert because of the sweet honey barbecue mixture. The wine list is extensive, with many international selections and some reasonably priced wines from BC. The Little Engine Chardonnay is particularly noteworthy. This is definitely upscale Chinese food which does not rest on it's laurels, but steps up every night. Walk in and you are greeted as if you were genuinely important. A broad smile welcomes you and the Hostee asks you to follow her to your table. Your nest is set up to receive any dish you preordered. Special plates and utensils are arranged aesthetically. The interior is richly appointed with expensive artistic touches. No sticky carpet or bare table with toothless crones shelling pea pods. This is a place for a special occasion. Birthday, Anniversary, or your first try on Asiandating.com. Do you have to dip into your Trust Fund? Maybe, if you're not careful but you can also dine like a King for a reasonable amount without sacrificing your Chinese culinary desires. The huge open kitchen is vibrant and busy. The scent of freshly made dishes subtly perfumes the dining room. The food we had was brilliant and measured up to the lovely decor. A soft rock loop urges you to eat to the beat without a thumping beat beating on your chest. And whatever they play it's better than a double CD of Guzheng tracks. The Bar: Mott 32 has a lot of alcohol. Signature slurps, spirits, an impressive Wine List plus an even more impressive Somm, Axelle. She knew exactly what went best with what. A bottle of Lake Breeze Pinot Blanc was bright and crisp and paired up as nicely as your third try on Asiandating. com. A small cup is set before each guest with a Terry Cloth nub. Hot water is poured into the cup and the little round knob of Terry Cloth expands into a bean stalk just like on one of your honeymoons. The Staff: It takes a village. Axelle flew by as needed to top off anyone who's glass needed a touch more. A special Peking Duck (which had to be preordered) Carver with his/her own set of surgical instruments required to carve a Duck clean in minutes. The Patchwork Quilt of Duck Slices were arranged in a lattice design with crispy skin in different presentation of equal squares on a separate platter. This all elevated the perfectly prepared Duck to a work of art. Fresh plates replaced the first set as soon as you chopstick the last bites past your lips. The Food: No weak links or missteps here. A blindfolded Chimp could poke at five dishes and create a magnificent meal. Do pre-order the Iberico Charred BBQ Pork which was amazing. Slightly sweet, juicy and Porky, it arrived in a dedicated carved wooden box with a carbon steel liner to retain the heat from the grill. There was not a speck of grease, gristle, or mystery chew. Crunchy charred bits, distantly smokey, were as tender as your fiancee who you met on Asiandating.com. As described above, the Peking Duck was presented whole and then carved tableside. Cleavered into equal slivers along with Julienne Scallions and Persian Cucumbers along with a theatrical offering of Hoisin Sauce with a tight swirl of Yuzo Cream in the middle of the cup like only a highly trained Barista can perfect. Do not duck this dish. Go all in with both hands and leave no slice behind. Black Cod came as a brick with charred points and served with Yuzu Sweet Mustard and Lemon. The effect was punctuation points of sweet and sour. It was almost easy to peel off large flakes of Cod and balance it from serving dish to plate to tongue. The Cod had been pre-sliced before serving it to assist you. Nice. Yes, General Tso's Chicken was/is fakey Chinese food. Created by Chef Peng Chang-kuei in 1955 in Taiwan. and made a ubiquitous dish in most Chinese restos everywhere by Chef T. T. Wang in 1972. This was the second best General Tso's Chicken, my version being the best if I Tsay Tso. Mott 32's General Tso's Chicken was wonderful. Spicy from the Whole Red Chilies, sweet from Palm Sugar and or Honey plus Orange Zest and Juice. Delicious to tsay the least. The Chicken was crispy and syrupy at the same time. It was a true pleasure hosting my out of town relatives at Mott 32 to enjoy some of the finest Cantonese cuisine in Vancouver for a birthday celebration. The restaurant absolutely lived up to its reputation; the food and service were both exceptional, making for a truly memorable evening. We pre-ordered the Applewood roasted Peking Duck a day in advance and opted for the second course by adding duck fried rice. Along with two additional dishes and a soup, the four of us were incredibly full, we even had enough duck left over to take home! Since I brought a 4-inch birthday cake, we skipped dessert, but we were pleasantly surprised when the restaurant generously provided complimentary Longevity Peaches (Shoutao) for the occasion. The only minor inconvenience was the valet parking ($21). Due to ongoing lobby renovations, I had to drive to the back for both drop-off and pick-up, which felt a bit redundant for a valet service. I hope the hotel completes the work soon so guests can once again enjoy curbside drop off service. Overall, Mott 32 is a top-notch establishment with great ambiance. We spent around 95 USD per person which included two appetizers, two soup, duck, duck fried rice, four drinks, and two dessert shared between four. The food is just ok - but for a very high price. We ordered veg fried rice, General Tso's chicken, sweet potato crusted prawns and veg fried rice. We had each dish delivered individually with fried rice coming last. After each dish we asked for rice - the server said they will expedite it but it came at the very end - pretty much after we had eaten all 3 dishes. This is just dumb. It doesn't matter what kind or level of restaurant you operate. Not serving rice or noodles when all the entrees are delivered is beyond not getting it. Don't go here. If you go, get a reservation in advance and reserve the Duck. I also highly recommend the Abalone and the Frog Leg appetizers. The restaurant was incredibly busy that night, but the weight staff took their time and recommended some great food options. So, it's been a great week here in Vancouver, and Yelp! has been super helpful, as always - we simply could not leave without trying one of the most well-known Chinese cuisine establishments worldwide. So, we booked a table tonight and strolled there from the Convention Center - took about 10-15 minutes. We were welcomed and seated in a nice 2-person table with a view of the kitchen, central dining area, and bar. Our waitstaff were polite and prompt. Grey was our main server, and he really helped us choose our items carefully - their menu is amazing, and it is EASY to over-order. He helped us trim things down to some very special dishes: -Whole crispy abalone (umami for daaaaaaays... amazing! - Hot and sour Ibérico pork soup dumplings - King prawns with black pepper, soy, green onion, and garlic - Black garlic and shrimp fried rice Everything came out perfectly seasoned and at a nice, leisurely pace. The cocktails were tasty, and the ambience was comfortable - I definitely appreciated them keeping the music levels low, so we could enjoy our conversation together. Mott 32 is a high end Chinese restaurant that's definitely on the pricey side, but after our first meal, it definitely proved its worth. Although my friends recommended the place for dim sum, we had other plans so we ended up there for dinner. They did have a handful of dim sum items, and we started off with xiao long bao's filled with hot and sour soup which were amazing. The cucumbers with pomelo is was another great starter which took two ingredients normally not served together. $78 for char siu is a bit pricey but it was also the best char siu I have had outside of Asia. The lobster mapo was flavorful with just a little heat and with a generous amount of lobster meat. The only dish that was a little underwhelming was their take on general tso - maybe it wasn't greasy enough haha. Desserts are not to be missed and our almond and chocolate xiao long bao were XLB in shape only, with the dessert being solid. Mott 32 also has a great drink list and we tried cocktails, wine and sake. The hanami (Canadian Club Rye / Bombay Gin / Umeshu / Yuzu / Shiso / Ginger Beer / Chrysanthemum) sounds like it has a lot going on but the end result is very well balanced. The wine list is extensive and the wines by the glass option has perhaps the widest range in pricing I have seen with some very nice albeit pricey options. So we came for the duck. This was no ordinary duck. This was a duck you ordered ahead of time but by the time we arrived, it was expertl roasted. And then carved up table side with such precision. It was a lot for two people. You're better off with 3-4. But still we had plenty of duck. We also ordered soup dumplings. These were some of my favorite soup dumplings because they were filled with a hit and sour soup. So different. Plus they were presented on wood trays that avoided them getting burst when you lifted them up. And do not miss the soy sauce ice cream!! It's like salted caramel but just better. To be fair, I always thought that "hey this is Vancouver, why would we ever have dim sum here when you have Richmond", right? Wrong. Mott 32 is well renowned around the globe but this one just did such an outstanding job. Although it wasn't very busy, the service was nevertheless impeccable and their attention to detail was spot on. This is not the place to try to get the most bang out of your buck. Instead, treat yourself to one of the best dim sum experiences I've had in Vancouver. My favorites were definitely the Rice rolls. We came here for dinner to celebrate our anniversary tonight. It was pricey and we knew from looking at the menu before booking the reservation but decided to splurge for the occasion. It is very opulent inside but the seatings are also very comfortable. The decor is reminiscent of what I saw in pictures, movies and TV of Shanghai society before the war. We had a whole Peking duck between the 2 of us and it was carved right next to us. 8 pieces of thinly sliced crispy skin were served as an amuse-bouche. The majority of the rest of the bird was carved and sliced with warm flour crepes. The crepes were perfect with a slight chew to them. We had a fried rice add-on made with whatever meat left carved down to the bones. I would dare say it was the best fried rice I've ever had. The mix of puffed rice in the mix gives a perfect crunch to every bite. We also had asparagus with crab meat in an egg white sauce as a vegetable dish to round out our dinner. In retrospect, it wasn't really necessary because the portions of our dishes were rather generous. However, it was deciduous. The asparagus was fresh and crunchy and the crab meat dressing was sweet with seafood freshness. Service was extremely friendly and attentive. I am giving this restaurant a 4 star because of the extremely attentive service. This includes the ambiance of the restaurant, however the restaurant is quite dark, my personal preference would be the restaurant should have abit more light to see what you are eating. As for the food, we were not impressed, there are better Chinese restaurant with great food. We had the Peking duck, instead of slicing it in front of you, they brought it to another table to sliced. I did not like the pancake that comes with it, was very sticky despite being separated by paper. It was challenging to fold up your Peking Duck slices. For a whole duck, there weren't too many slices, they separated parts of the slices & gives you a small plate of just dark skin that is accompanied by sugar. The 2nd course of the Peking Duck was fried rice, its "wok hei" was good however we barely found any duck meat in the fried rice... frankly we felt that we got short changed on the Pekíng Duck. We had the smoked black cod, nice presentation however the cod was too sweet for my liking, it was coated in a syrupy sauce, a pity as you could not savour the smokiness of the cod. I've come here twice at this point and each time have left super happy with Mott 32. Their most famous item is the peking duck (must be reserved ahead of time). They bring someone out to carve the duck for you, and it includes a plate of crispy duck skin (should be dipped in sugar), two plates of duck meat, pancake crepes to roll the duck meat, cucumber, green onion, and hoisin/sesame sauce. Please get the duck fried rice as a second course if you order the peking duck -- they add some sort of crunchy topping as well as asparagus that makes it pretty unique. I've also tried a couple other items like the pork belly roll and the crispy triple-cooked black angus short rib. I was expecting the pork belly roll to be like a beef pancake roll but this is literally pork belly rolled with cucumber, spring onion, and garlic). Still delicious though, and whatever sauce they put it in is sweet yet savory at the same time. We were recommended the short rib by the server but did not think it was very good. Stopped by for a weekday lunch with a friend; we had reservations but the place was pretty empty around noon when we arrived. The interior seems pretty big (not sure if it's just the layout that makes it seem very spacious) and generally very elegantly decorated. The service was very kind, prompt, and attentive, from start to finish. The two of us ordered a bunch of smaller dishes from the dim sum / lunch menu to share: The prawn hargow was SO good - as soon as it arrived you could smell that iconic, authentic fragrant dim sum steam coming out. Each piece was so yummy and had lots of juicy filling (and prawns super delicious). The spare ribs were not bad, they were a little on the blander side unfortunately but I did like that they were boneless haha. Me and my lazy eating,,, We tried to order the crispy BBQ pork buns but were told that they were already out for the day :( How they ran out by 12:30pm ish is beyond me, it was really quite disappointing. We ordered the beef buns instead, which thankfully were also really delicious. The crust was really light and flaky, and the filling was fantastic. Savoury, flavourful beef paired with not too much pepper, and I also loved the onions. The chilli oil dumplings (紅油抄手) was surprisingly good; we were a bit sceptical at first since it's not traditionally a part of Cantonese/dim sum cuisine. The fillings were really big and savoury, and the chilli oil smelled so good that we wanted to dip everything in it. And it was actually spicy! Always a treat to find that outside of Asia Finally we had the egg tarts - SO. GOOD. The crust was so soft and delicate - you could see the dozens of layers after layer. The filling was also amazing - not too sweet, perfectly soft/liquidy on the inside, and was a wonderful dessert for our meal. We also got the mango paradise and the jasmine cooler which were both quite delightful, I loved the jasmine one in particular. Overall, it was definitely on the pricier side, coming out to around $60-70 each for this; I'm not convinced that the quality/amount of food was worthwhile at this price to come again (maybe it would have been better with a larger group)? Impeccable service from start to finish. The waitstaff were attentive and knowledgeable. The food was exceptional, fresh, high quality ingredients. The duck was perfectly roasted, with crisp skins, and full of flavours. We love the (seasonal) mapo tofu and the duck fried rice. The smoked cod was a feast for the senses! It's not a traditional Chinese restaurant. It's a Chinese fusion restaurant. The wait staff was attentive, friendly, and professional. We had an order of seafood hot and sour soup which the waitress offered to split it into two bowls so we can both had a taste. The presentation of the soup dumplings was wonderful. The mixed seafood fried rice was plentiful and delicious; I'd get it again. The prawns of the General Tso prawns were juicy and tender. The wok kale flavor was a bit light. It had a great selections of desserts. We had soy sauce ice cream; you can actually taste the soy sauce which was interesting and good. The mango soup was great. read more

Hands THE MOST EXPENSIVE Chinese restaurant I've been to, but the decoration, service, and food explained why. When I first entered the door, I immediately noticed how upscale the restaurant was. Can we talk? This place makes Chinese food like it's nobodies business. Absolutely positively the best Chineese food I have had....ever. Hands down--send home the fans. Game over. I mean, seriously, I might come to Vancouver just to come here. The Peking duck was moist with perfectly crisped skin and each scrumptious bite drew me closer to a heavenly plane. Although I don't log my dreams or remember them, I suspect this meal--alongside an episode of GOT where I was the purported protagonist-- was featured. The General Tso chicken was cooked perfect with the perfect size of chicken chunks and perfect batter and cooked just right. The sauce was velvety smooth with the perfect amount of seasoning and the ensconced chicken was moist and delicious. I know what you're thinking....the chicken and broccoli couldn't have been special. Well, ok, maybe you're right....but the chicken was prepared with intention, and the right size, chunk shapes, and seasoning while the broccoli was cooked just right without sag, sog or hard crunch. Sauce (on side) was best ever. The fried rice was delectable and seasoned just right and the portion and proportion of ingredients was generous and just right respectively. Bacon and cucumber rolls were very special--not the largest portion but for what it lacked in that realm it made up for in terms of unique taste. Not meaning to come across hackneyed or cause a rolling of the eyes-- the Chow Fun was fun to eat and throughly enjoyable. I have made this before-- the quick and easy way and the long and sophisticated way--it was clear that they took the latter approach. There were layers of taste the amalgamated to create a fresh, cheery, and enjoyable main course. Service was dutifully attentive and professional. They made us feel special. They checked in repeatedly and often and even explained how items were prepared and consumption suggestions (e.g. soup dumpling scooped and gullet). To be frank, I felt like I was a king--not in the obnoxious authoritarian sort of way but in the way they treated us. The ambiance was classy, new-age, and high-end with the kitchen visible from tables. It supported the rest of the experience. I seldom give out scores of 5. I reserve that for impeccable places that I consider destination stops. Congratulations to the restaurant... and to those who make the wise choice to come here. read more
