It was a true pleasure hosting my out of town relatives at Mott 32 to enjoy some of the finest Cantonese cuisine in Vancouver for a birthday celebration. The restaurant absolutely lived up to its reputation; the food and service were both exceptional, making for a truly memorable evening. We pre-ordered the Applewood roasted Peking Duck a day in advance and opted for the second course by adding duck fried rice. Along with two additional dishes and a soup, the four of us were incredibly full, we even had enough duck left over to take home! Since I brought a 4-inch birthday cake, we skipped dessert, but we were pleasantly surprised when the restaurant generously provided complimentary Longevity Peaches (Shoutao) for the occasion. The only minor inconvenience was the valet parking ($21). Due to ongoing lobby renovations, I had to drive to the back for both drop-off and pick-up, which felt a bit redundant for a valet service. I hope the hotel completes the work soon so guests can once again enjoy curbside drop off service. Overall, Mott 32 is a top-notch establishment with great ambiance. Every bite was thoughtful, refined, and unforgettable, setting a new standard I didn't even realize I was missing. The ambiance alone is worth the visit. It reminded me of Dishoom--moody, elegant, and immersive, striking that perfect balance between old-world charm and modern sophistication. It feels special without ever feeling stuffy. What an incredible dining experience. We were in town for a conference and decided to splurge for dinner, and Mott 32 was an absolute treat. The sweet and sour ibérico pork XLBs were the standout dish for the night! Incredibly flavorful. But honestly, everything we had to eat was simply excellent. A beautiful and interestingly decorated restaurant. Even a trip to the restroom is an exotic experience. The shrimp har gow and spring rolls with prawn were absolutely perfect prepared! Delicious! Also the kitchen was amiable in do a vegetable substitution on our beef stir fry. Most unfortunate however, was the Signature Lobstet Ma Po Tofu. A nice presentation but the love stopped there. At a whopping $85 it didn't have more than 2-3 ounces or less of lobster, claws aside. The Ma Po flavor was bland and listless. If you go, get a reservation in advance and reserve the Duck. I also highly recommend the Abalone and the Frog Leg appetizers. Our server was Michelle and she did an outstanding job making sure we had everything we needed and never went without. Our Sommelier this time was Robert and he selected a wonderful Syrah from Australia. It paired perfect with the duck. Everything from start to finish was excellent! We will be back! Mott 32 was voted the best Chinese restaurant in Vancouver, and it lived up to expectations. The ambience and the service of the restaurant was truly spectacular and in very welcoming. The restaurant was incredibly busy that night, but the weight staff took their time and recommended some great food options. The general T'so is the best I've ever had and the crab fried rice was unique and very flavorful. The place was half full, it was not as busy as I thought it would be. We ordered the phoenix tea, Peking duck, Siu Mai, BBQ pork bun and a Thai mango dessert roll. However, I wasn't impressed with the duck, I'd say it's solid but far from what I'd expect it would be for Michelin star restaurant. The best part of the thin wrap. Mott 32 is a high end Chinese restaurant that's definitely on the pricey side, but after our first meal, it definitely proved its worth. Although my friends recommended the place for dim sum, we had other plans so we ended up there for dinner. They did have a handful of dim sum items, and we started off with xiao long bao's filled with hot and sour soup which were amazing. The cucumbers with pomelo is was another great starter which took two ingredients normally not served together. $78 for char siu is a bit pricey but it was also the best char siu I have had outside of Asia. The lobster mapo was flavorful with just a little heat and with a generous amount of lobster meat. The only dish that was a little underwhelming was their take on general tso - maybe it wasn't greasy enough haha. Desserts are not to be missed and our almond and chocolate xiao long bao were XLB in shape only, with the dessert being solid. Mott 32 also has a great drink list and we tried cocktails, wine and sake. The hanami (Canadian Club Rye / Bombay Gin / Umeshu / Yuzu / Shiso / Ginger Beer / Chrysanthemum) sounds like it has a lot going on but the end result is very well balanced. The wine list is extensive and the wines by the glass option has perhaps the widest range in pricing I have seen with some very nice albeit pricey options. I loved the soup dumplings and the jellyfish. The shrimp dumplings and the pork belly was excellent as well. The duck was the star of the show and while it wasn't as good as some of the versions I've had in Hong Kong and China, it was one of the best I've had in North America. So, it's been a great week here in Vancouver, and Yelp! has been super helpful, as always - we simply could not leave without trying one of the most well-known Chinese cuisine establishments worldwide. So, we booked a table tonight and strolled there from the Convention Center - took about 10-15 minutes. We were welcomed and seated in a nice 2-person table with a view of the kitchen, central dining area, and bar. Our waitstaff were polite and prompt. Grey was our main server, and he really helped us choose our items carefully - their menu is amazing, and it is EASY to over-order. He helped us trim things down to some very special dishes: -Whole crispy abalone (umami for daaaaaaays... amazing! - Hot and sour Ibérico pork soup dumplings - King prawns with black pepper, soy, green onion, and garlic - Black garlic and shrimp fried rice Everything came out perfectly seasoned and at a nice, leisurely pace. The cocktails were tasty, and the ambience was comfortable - I definitely appreciated them keeping the music levels low, so we could enjoy our conversation together. So we came for the duck. This was no ordinary duck. This was a duck you ordered ahead of time but by the time we arrived, it was expertl roasted. And then carved up table side with such precision. It was a lot for two people. You're better off with 3-4. But still we had plenty of duck. We also ordered soup dumplings. These were some of my favorite soup dumplings because they were filled with a hit and sour soup. So different. Plus they were presented on wood trays that avoided them getting burst when you lifted them up. And do not miss the soy sauce ice cream!! It's like salted caramel but just better. I am giving this restaurant a 4 star because of the extremely attentive service. This includes the ambiance of the restaurant, however the restaurant is quite dark, my personal preference would be the restaurant should have abit more light to see what you are eating. As for the food, we were not impressed, there are better Chinese restaurant with great food. We had the Peking duck, instead of slicing it in front of you, they brought it to another table to sliced. I did not like the pancake that comes with it, was very sticky despite being separated by paper. It was challenging to fold up your Peking Duck slices. For a whole duck, there weren't too many slices, they separated parts of the slices & gives you a small plate of just dark skin that is accompanied by sugar. The 2nd course of the Peking Duck was fried rice, its "wok hei" was good however we barely found any duck meat in the fried rice... frankly we felt that we got short changed on the Pekíng Duck. We had the smoked black cod, nice presentation however the cod was too sweet for my liking, it was coated in a syrupy sauce, a pity as you could not savour the smokiness of the cod. The veggies we ordered was ok. The food was not stellar & definitely below my expectation for the price of the food. To be fair, I always thought that "hey this is Vancouver, why would we ever have dim sum here when you have Richmond", right? Wrong. Mott 32 is well renowned around the globe but this one just did such an outstanding job. Although it wasn't very busy, the service was nevertheless impeccable and their attention to detail was spot on. This is not the place to try to get the most bang out of your buck. We came here for dinner to celebrate our anniversary tonight. It was pricey and we knew from looking at the menu before booking the reservation but decided to splurge for the occasion. It is very opulent inside but the seatings are also very comfortable. The decor is reminiscent of what I saw in pictures, movies and TV of Shanghai society before the war. We had a whole Peking duck between the 2 of us and it was carved right next to us. 8 pieces of thinly sliced crispy skin were served as an amuse-bouche. The majority of the rest of the bird was carved and sliced with warm flour crepes. The crepes were perfect with a slight chew to them. We had a fried rice add-on made with whatever meat left carved down to the bones. I would dare say it was the best fried rice I've ever had. The mix of puffed rice in the mix gives a perfect crunch to every bite. We also had asparagus with crab meat in an egg white sauce as a vegetable dish to round out our dinner. In retrospect, it wasn't really necessary because the portions of our dishes were rather generous. However, it was deciduous. The asparagus was fresh and crunchy and the crab meat dressing was sweet with seafood freshness. Service was extremely friendly and attentive. I've come here twice at this point and each time have left super happy with Mott 32. Their most famous item is the peking duck (must be reserved ahead of time). They bring someone out to carve the duck for you, and it includes a plate of crispy duck skin (should be dipped in sugar), two plates of duck meat, pancake crepes to roll the duck meat, cucumber, green onion, and hoisin/sesame sauce. Please get the duck fried rice as a second course if you order the peking duck -- they add some sort of crunchy topping as well as asparagus that makes it pretty unique. I've also tried a couple other items like the pork belly roll and the crispy triple-cooked black angus short rib. I was expecting the pork belly roll to be like a beef pancake roll but this is literally pork belly rolled with cucumber, spring onion, and garlic). Still delicious though, and whatever sauce they put it in is sweet yet savory at the same time. We were recommended the short rib by the server but did not think it was very good. Stopped by for a weekday lunch with a friend; we had reservations but the place was pretty empty around noon when we arrived. The interior seems pretty big (not sure if it's just the layout that makes it seem very spacious) and generally very elegantly decorated. The service was very kind, prompt, and attentive, from start to finish. The two of us ordered a bunch of smaller dishes from the dim sum / lunch menu to share: The prawn hargow was SO good - as soon as it arrived you could smell that iconic, authentic fragrant dim sum steam coming out. Each piece was so yummy and had lots of juicy filling (and prawns super delicious). The spare ribs were not bad, they were a little on the blander side unfortunately but I did like that they were boneless haha. Me and my lazy eating,,, We tried to order the crispy BBQ pork buns but were told that they were already out for the day :( How they ran out by 12:30pm ish is beyond me, it was really quite disappointing. We ordered the beef buns instead, which thankfully were also really delicious. The crust was really light and flaky, and the filling was fantastic. Savoury, flavourful beef paired with not too much pepper, and I also loved the onions. The chilli oil dumplings (紅油抄手) was surprisingly good; we were a bit sceptical at first since it's not traditionally a part of Cantonese/dim sum cuisine. The fillings were really big and savoury, and the chilli oil smelled so good that we wanted to dip everything in it. And it was actually spicy! Always a treat to find that outside of Asia Finally we had the egg tarts - SO. GOOD. The crust was so soft and delicate - you could see the dozens of layers after layer. The filling was also amazing - not too sweet, perfectly soft/liquidy on the inside, and was a wonderful dessert for our meal. We also got the mango paradise and the jasmine cooler which were both quite delightful, I loved the jasmine one in particular. Overall, it was definitely on the pricier side, coming out to around $60-70 each for this; I'm not convinced that the quality/amount of food was worthwhile at this price to come again (maybe it would have been better with a larger group)? We had an order of seafood hot and sour soup which the waitress offered to split it into two bowls so we can both had a taste. The presentation of the soup dumplings was wonderful. Although I don't log my dreams or remember them, I suspect this meal--alongside an episode of GOT where I was the purported protagonist-- was featured. The General Tso chicken was cooked perfect with the perfect size of chicken chunks and perfect batter and cooked just right. The sauce was velvety smooth with the perfect amount of seasoning and the ensconced chicken was moist and delicious. I know what you're thinking....the chicken and broccoli couldn't have been special. Well, ok, maybe you're right....but the chicken was prepared with intention, and the right size, chunk shapes, and seasoning while the broccoli was cooked just right without sag, sog or hard crunch. Sauce (on side) was best ever. The fried rice was delectable and seasoned just right and the portion and proportion of ingredients was generous and just right respectively. Bacon and cucumber rolls were very special--not the largest portion but for what it lacked in that realm it made up for in terms of unique taste. Not meaning to come across hackneyed or cause a rolling of the eyes-- the Chow Fun was fun to eat and throughly enjoyable. I have made this before-- the quick and easy way and the long and sophisticated way--it was clear that they took the latter approach. There were layers of taste the amalgamated to create a fresh, cheery, and enjoyable main course. Service was dutifully attentive and professional. They made us feel special. They checked in repeatedly and often and even explained how items were prepared and consumption suggestions (e.g. soup dumpling scooped and gullet). To be frank, I felt like I was a king--not in the obnoxious authoritarian sort of way but in the way they treated us. This place had great reviews so we thought we would give it a try. We made reservations and asked for a quiet out of traffic spot. However, we were seated in a terrible spot. There was nonstop traffic where we sat. Immediately behind my wife's chair was a door that the staff kept coming in and out of. For the prices at this place there should not be a bad seat in the house. The food was ok. But for the price it is not worth it. My job enables my wife and I to travel around the world. Mott32 Vancouver is always my favorite dim sum place in Vancouver. It is definitely one of the most expensive restaurants, but every bite will worth it. We ordered cha siu bao, siu mai with quail egg, miso cod dumpling, sweet and sour xiao lun bao, and chocolate oolong tea xiao lun bao. The bao is very crispy, and cha siu is very soft and juicy inside the bao. Siu mai is very special because there is a soft boil quail egg inside the siu mai. There are no other restaurants that have sweet and sour dumpling and miso black cod dumpling. They are all special.
