She started picking it off but then ended up eating all the cheese anyway, so it must have been good! Just not expected. I got the Birria tacos. They were good, but not the best I've ever had. The portions are good for the price. The meat is all well cooked. My biggest complaint is that the menu is unclear and a little chaotic. There are pictures for things that aren't on the menu, and when I asked for clarification, the cashier seemed confused. For example, there is a picture of quesabirilla tacos, but the only options on the menu were quesadilla birria or birria tacos. I tried to ask how to order the quesabirilla tacos, but I just for birria tacos. Maybe the others don't exist. The cashier wasn't super interested in helping and it's super awkward to sit and read the giant menu while he's staring at you, so maybe read it ahead of time and know what you are getting. Haha. Don't expect normal Mexican food. It's different, but fun! That's the appeal. But also important to know before showing up.

Like most Mexican restaurants, they start you off with chips and salsa. The salsa itself was pretty good and had a kick to it that kind of surprised us. I ordered the shrimp tacos, and they were good, but I felt like they were missing something, so I ended up adding the salsa from the chips onto the tacos. The rice and beans unfortunately lacked flavor, and I honestly couldn't finish them. My husband ordered the chicken enchiladas, but they accidentally brought him a tamale and chile relleno instead. I wanted to say something, but he just wanted to let it go and eat it anyway. The tamale was pretty good, and he didn't mind the chile relleno either. Overall, not a terrible experience, just not somewhere I'd personally rush back to.

The chicken street taco was underwhelming. The chicken was a bit bland. The dark meat was definitely dark meat. Ordered aqua fresca. Was disappointed that he pointed me in the direction of the fountain. Not homemade. The salsa bar is small, only six items with three sauces. No pico de gallo. No pico de gallo. Huh. Service was fine. Fun dinosaur themed decor. 5* = A top favorite. Mind-blowing good. I will definitely return and I will go out of my way to go here. Worth every dime of my money. 4* = Outstanding. Top-tier. Some elements not quite as good as it gets, but it still is worthy of my regular business. 3* = Good experience. I might do repeat business if it is convenient, the only option, the only one in its category, or on a whim, but would not be among the first thing to come to mind. Would definitely recommend you trying it to get your own take on it. 2* = Not so good. Would not recommend at all. Waste of money. 1* = How are they still in business? Stay away at all costs!

So simple, yet so good, as tacos should be! Their food here is very straight forward - Mexican and tasty, no extra bells and whistles. I bought about 10 tacos on Tuesday, since they have a Taco Tuesday deal. Some meats don't apply to the deal, like tripe, but that's okay. It was worth the few extra bucks. For tacos, I got asada, pollo, cabeza, tripe, al pastor, and lengua. Their service is good, quick enough, and the works are kind. I will say, there might be a slight language barrier (Spanish vs. English) but nothing to worry about. This location is quite big, lots of tables! Inside of this location, there is also a dessert/drink spot. I love the protein options they have here. I sometimes just order by the pound with their Spanish red rice and call it a good night! They also have a salsa bar with all the toppings you can want on a taco. I'll always be returning to Don Joaquin!
