Who could complain or worry about a thing when roaming rows of olive and pomegranate trees? I appreciate Rhumb Line's selective for drought tolerant crops, and their organic methods. Even in the winter when the lavender isn't in bloom and the vines are dormant, the farm is gorgeous. Every aspect of the settling and experience is carefully selected and detailed. When the cafe was closed we made our own meals in the well appointed kitchen in the suite! They make all kinds of culinary, home, and body care products with plants from their farm. I felt lucky to enjoy them. Stellar experience.

The huts may conjure up a rustic vision in your mind, but you will be more than happily surprised by the thoughtfully designed and beautifully and artfully decorated Quonset Huts. Each of the two huts as two bedrooms and two baths, two small refrigerators, microwaves, toaster ovens and gas grills. Each unit is equipped with music and there is a fun fire pit with seating for seven between the huts. The owners live on property down the road and to say that they are delightful and kind is an understatement! We will definitely be back for another relaxing trip to their farm...hopefully when the lavender is in full bloom!

We booked this park so we could be close to visit Tombstone, AZ. When we arrived, it was as if we…read morehad entered a different world. As we drove toward Dragoon, all of a sudden the scenery shifted to one of a bouldered landscape. Each rock as if it had been picked up by a giant and then gently balanced on top of another. It was surreal and reminded us of a movie set from Lost in Space. Come to find out, it was the site of a filming of the 1957 movie "3:10 to Yuma." This is a Dude Ranch with several amenities. We chose a site with water and electric only, but there are other sites with full hook-ups. There is a pristine "COLD" water pool and a full restaurant and bar that is open only during peak seasons. There is free WiFi, bunkhouse "motel" rooms, casitas and cottages as well. To call this place "other-worldly" would be close, but it was absolutely magical. So dark at night, you could actually see the Milky Way and peer into a universe far far away. Luminaries such as President John F. Kennedy, General John J. Pershing, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans and others have visited and stayed at this unique location. Our only wish was that we had more than just an overnighted. We'd definitely like to return.

What a treasure! When I called ahead to book a camp spot for the RV, I was welcomed by Mona, the heartbeat of the Triangle T! Gracious, full of character and charm, with amazing stamina and energy. I'll let you ask her age when you get here! The next day - within a very short time of our arrival, we were made to feel like family - not only by Mona but every member of the staff we encountered. Growing up in the 1950s, it was all about Cowboys and Indians. Roy Rogers, the Lone Ranger, Gene Autry, John Wayne...names that greeted us on the small signposts along the entry road. The signature boulder landscape was absolutely remarkable - creating the kind of ambiance that Disney works hard to recreate! Had I been here before? You bet - every time I went to a Saturday Matinee at the Avenue Theatre in Edmonton, Alberta Canada, I was here! Had I died at an early age, I am sure this is what heaven would have looked like - compete with horses - led down a well-worn trail by a grizzled old wrangler - a man of few words - only spoke when necessary! We opted for dinner in the Rock Saloon - while the rest of the world seems to be able to steak or eat ribs for dinner, at my advanced age, I am resigned to chicken or fish. This had to be the best almond-crusted chicken breast to which I'd ever taken a fork. Like other guests, we were forwarned to let Mona know earlier in the day - should we plan to dine at the Rock Saloon. Over dinner, we were joined by another guest and Kevin, the local mechanical wizard that kept everything running around the ranch. He too had come to the place months before and was shocked to find this 'well-kept secret'. Mostly he is there because he likes to be there - not an uncommon thread amongst the staff at the Triangle T! Linda Kelly, the owner of the place is easily one of the ranch's greatest fans! She truly has her heart and soul in the place. A 'stand-out' member of the cast is Thomas - a gangly 'roustabout' who manages the 'ranchy issues' like road maintenance, mending fences, etc., etc. Points to the rattlesnake band on his well-worn cowboy hat and exclaims....."Yup - killed him m'self with a knife, skinned him out, turned him into dinner one night, and made a hat band outta him!" You really can't make this stuff up folks! If you and your family are looking for somewhere to be, this place is steeped in early history as the wintering place of Cochise and the Chirichua Apaches, later history as the kind of guest ranch that would attract the likes of the Vanderbilts, the Rockefellers, and the Kennedys. During WW2, it was a top-secret detainment camp for the Japanese diplomats and spies that engineered the attack on Pearl Harbor, 7 December 1941 - the day that still lives in infamy! Following the war, due to its unique natural beauty, it became a haven for Hollywood Westerns and hosted many of the legendary actors of the silver screen including Roy Rogers & Dale Evans, Gene Autry, Rex Allen, John Wayne, The Lone Ranger & Tonto, Glenn Ford, Ronald Ragan and later Gene Hackman! Today, it is being restored by a group of dedicated people who host several events throughout the year - and provide a fabulous experience to anyone who might be looking for a halfway point between Las Cruces and Tucson!

All hotels in Benson AZ (on the I-10 exit to Tombstone) were booked. We were so disappointed, it was 9 or 9:30 and we were ready for a break. It's a pretty sparse area, hotel-wise, and we were too far ahead of Tucson (about an hour) to turn back. I googled hotels within 30 miles and found a few in Willcox. Rose's is advertised as a 1950's style motel upgraded to modern standards. If you enjoy small business lodging rather than national brands, this is the place for you. We just needed a place for the night and his place seemed homey and welcoming. So I called, and they had 1 room left. We took it! Glad we did. It wasn't necessarily less expensive than a national brand, but the room was very clean and upgraded with a laminate floor and fresh light blue decor including painted walls, welcoming artwork and modern curtains -- kind of a nautical motif. The bathroom featured a tile shower (lots of hot water!), new sink/toilet, clean towels. Microwave/fridge, but no coffeemaker (that's OK, we aren't coffee people). The staff was friendly and helpful; they did not have a free breakfast like many of the national brands, but they did offer us bottled water. Rose's Motel is not visible from I-10; you have to drive thru town to find it. Granted it put us an hour away from Tombstone but we didn't mind that. We were just glad to have a nice, quiet, cozy, comfy place to stay. Wish we could have stayed longer. If we're in the area again we will definitely seek this place out!

The restaurant while a bit high especially on drinks was so good! The things in the KOA store were a little higher than Walmart but most are. The internet was around 75Mb/30Mb and extremely stable even at the back side of the park. On our stay the next time on the way back the young girl got us a little better spot closer to the laundry and showers for our trouble the first time with the water. However, I kept waking up with the distinct thought that I'd likely be murdered. You see, after I got here around 11:30 at night, I just paid up front and went into the room. The bedroom itself wasn't too bad, though everything looked stained. The bed had a Santa Claus pillow on it in late February The bathroom had sort of an African tribal theme, with animal print shower curtains and floor pads. There were at least two dead (huge) New Orleans-style cockroaches on the bathroom floor. But the kicker was the bathroom window actually would not close, and I was basically exposed to anyone walking behind (it was the ground floor) that wanted to hop into the bathroom. So when I went to sleep, I just sort of piled all of the extra furniture in the room against the bathroom door. Now that I stayed there once and didn't die, I'd probably do it again, but for the train noise.

This place has been the site of numerous movies and is an active location for westerns even now....with 5 westerns on tap to come and film in the near future. If you love antiques you will absolutely adore The Gulch. And Jay can tell you the history of each and every piece. He's got several antique cars, old mining equipment and lots of movie memorabilia. And you can take all the time you want to take photographs and just relax in the beautiful high desert. There are no horses to ride here....no food or drinks for sale....just good old fashion visiting and hanging out on a real movie set. (There IS some root beer to drink if you get real thirsty.) Jay's father was John Wayne's security guard and even Jay himself has been featured in a few movies...including one with John Wayne. Part of his tour is telling you about these famous stars he has met and worked with. That's a real treat. Gammons Gulch is open September through May from 9 to 4. From June to August, you need to call and let him know you're coming. He might be in Benson at the Walmart. And it does get pretty hot here in the summer. That's why Jay suggests calling no matter what day you plan on coming. If you love movies and western towns, put Gammons Gulch on your "to visit" list.
