No cover charge on First Friday Pub Runs if you are dressed up in the theme of the month. Not sure about other nights of the week or month. Good service and not outrageously priced drinks for being down town ($5 per beer). But at times, it can be hard to get a drink. You get one free hug when you check-in on Yelp, LOL. Every time I come to San Antonio and stay near the Riverwalk I make sure to stop by Moses Rose's Hideout. My favorite part about coming here is the hookah! We've been here a few times already and always enjoy having a drink and smoking hookah! The music sometimes is hit or miss: the DJ will play current hits and slip in some early 2000s hits so one second you're jamming and the next you're brought back to those early middle school day. Their drinks are okay, not bad but also not great - not necessarily the place I'd come to for only drinks. We also enjoy setting the hookah up by the pool table and playing a couple of games. There's often people playing or waiting to play so you might have to wait a bit before you get the chance to play. I have not tried the food here yet so I will make no comment on that. read more

We love Moses; that's why we came back. Sadly they have changed up and limited their menu which was a total bummer. Atmosphere is still great, I understand they have changed it to more of a 'club' for dancing now. The overall service is still great. They also offer Hookah, I don't smoke it personally but my BF does and he thought it was fair for the price but not good. Now, mind you he did a lot of research years ago when he smoked it regularly and bought all of the right stuff. He said the tobacco used is an off brand, was packed too tightly and they don't use ceramic bowls, probably to keep costs down. So the flavor was very bland and not a good smoking experience. Not sure we will go back though because we are all about the food when choosing restaurants during our travels. read more

We chose this place for proximity. As it was half a block away from the Gibbs. When we entered, we were met with a plain room, housing nothing but a mechanical horse and a closet. A few posters including one of the naked cowboy, and a cheeky flap suggesting one should peek under. (I did) we never noticed the button one should push to gain access to the secret bar. So we started to leave. Suddenly the wall / panel opened up to reveal the bar behind. Once inside I noticed the security camera and TV showing everyone in the bar what goes on in the seemingly pointless room. (Now THATS hilarious). The service was great. Moses Rose's Hideout was right down the road from my hotel so I decided to go grab my whiskey and a bite to eat. I was sold right at the front door. It's a hidden door that you need to push the button to open (I wi). The bar is very spacious. High ceilings, plenty of table seating and a huge bar. There's also an outdoor area that you can bring your food and drink to for smoking. I ordered spicy BBQ wings to go and a side of mac and cheese. I'm not usually a bbq sauce fan but the sauce was pretty fantastic! The wings had perfectly crispy skin and lots of meat on the bones. Mac and cheese was great too. This place has a sense of an authentic saloon style environment. The entrance into the bar is pretty humorous as you have to open a "don't peek" box to get in ... I love the uniqueness in that! Our bartender was amazing, funny, attentive and knowledgeable about other places to go to in the area! Drinks were on point and cool decor! We were visiting the Alamo and were looking for a place to eat. We found this place on Yelp and luckily it was within walking distance from the Alamo (pretty much across the street). We did find that the entrance doesn't face the street, but is found on the side of the building (we accidentally walked into a back room at first). The place has a nice bar and a bunch of long tables found throughout the floor. We were greeted right away and found that we could sit anywhere. The place is fairly open, clean and simple. They have different types of burgers and sides on the menu (with a variety of different drinks). Our server was funny and very attentive. We had our drinks filled and had our food brought in a decent amount of time. The food that we had (different types of burgers and fries) was pretty good. We received fairly large portions and everything was filling. I would recommend stopping by if you want some good food and good service. read more

Moses Rose's is one of the primary stops for First Friday in San Antonio. If you're not aware of First Friday think a bunch of people running around in costumes bar to bar in honor of the monthly theme. If you check it out during FF you can expect a bunch of rowdy people collaborating and passing back drinks in order to head to the next bar. One of the fun perks of this joint is how you have to hula hoop in the front room in order to get in. Plain & Simple... hula hoop and you don't have to pay an entry fee. Not sure about everyone but I love to penny pinch if possible. There is one thing to consider; however, everyone I mean EVERYONE sees you hula hooping inside the bar on screens. It's a great ice breaker and an even better chance to laugh at your friends when it's their first time checking it out. For those of us who get the drunken munchies or have late night craving then Moses Rose's is your spot. The kitchen is open till 1am! Drinks are cheap and karaoke and music is solid. read more

I won't ruin the surprise for you. But Moses Rose's has a cleverly-designed entrance. It fooled my friends and me, but I hope it doesn't fool you! I ordered the beef brisket sandwich for $7.50 and it was the best thing I had during my stay in San Antonio, TX. The beef was very tender and well marinated. Beware, it's a messy sandwich so probably not a good item to order on a first date. Unless, you're like me and you're not concerned with impressing people. :) They have a full bar, but didn't have very many red wines in stock. The waiter said it was due to the large crowd of college students who were visiting for spring break. Our food took at least 30 minutes to come out and we had to wait about 30 minutes to place our order. Pretty ridiculous, but our waiter apologized profusely for the poor service. We was the only person running the whole place. It's located close to the Alamo and the Riverwalk so it's a convenient place to eat if you're in the area. Mose's Roses is indeed a true "Hideout." We were in SATX and did a Yelp search for BBQ and the joint popped up. So glad we found it...only if we could have found out how to get in the front door! No, it's actually pretty easy (just press the button) but more than a little creepy. Think haunted house without any scary decor (see pic). Just an empty room. Door creaks open and we enter and find, to our surprise, a fairly large space full of tables, a long bar, and live music playing. Cool. When we walked in we could definitely smell BBQ smoking somewhere nearby, albeit the furnishings reads more bar than Q. There's a pool table, darts, and a few videos games. Oh, and when you check-in on Yelp, be sure to redeem your "Free Hug." ;-) Two seats at the end of the bar. Excellent service by both the gal and guy (Boone). Ordered a couple of cold ones and pursued the menu. Decent selection and excellent prices, especially for the uber touristy Alamo area of downtown. First thing I noticed was the menu states they "smoke their meats for 16 hours." Boone informed us everything on the menu (except the queso, which is easy to make so odd) is scratch made. Decided to go for the Brisket Tacos and the San Jose burger for the hubby. Brisket tacos: BBQ sauce dressed diced meat served in flour tortilla with pico and quac. Decent. San Jose burger: OMGreat burger!!! One of the best I've ever had. Seriously - top 5! I'm so glad I asked for one of the last couple of bites before my husband wolfed it down. Huge juicy patty, cooked perfectly with a slightly crunchy sear. Topped with brisket, cheddar, and BBQ sauce served on a fluffy roll. Want more please?! RECOMMEND. Side of Fried Tator Salad: Not sure about this one. Tasty little square potato fried hash browns with hunks of congealed cheese and a few other unrecognizable ingredients. Interesting. Happy hour is from 4-7 and 11-1am 7 days a week. A few extra cheap ($2.50-$3.50) bites to choose from (wings, nachos, fried pickles, etc.) and some $$ off of drinks. Moses has a decent selection of Texas beers and Fredericksburg wines - keepin' it local - love it! Overall: What a cool hangout! Laid back. Not just tourists - locals frequent too - met some really friendly people. Can't say much about the rest of the menu, but if you have any doubt get the SAN JOSE! Fantastic bar service. Boone seems to know all off SA, so he's a great person to get info from. He sent us to a few local bars down on St. Mary's and to the Japanese Tea Garden (in my 100 visits to SATX never heard of it; must see; seperate review). Oh, and be sure to keep your eye on the TVs that show live time surveillance from the entry. Too funny! Scared people, confused people, some people just give up and walk out. First night in San Antonio so we needed a late night dinner place. Found this next to our hotel and decided to check it out. It's a game to get in! See if you can figure out how to get in!! I had a good time riding on the horse. (Btw, you're on camera and everyone can see you. No pressure). Atmosphere: Dive Texas bar/restaurant. It looks like it has live music at some point since there was a stage set up. It's got a pool table and darts in the back. Plenty of bike parking as well. It's a pretty big place, lots of seating areas, a long bar, and lots of TVs all around. It can get pretty loud in here-at one point they started blasting the music so I couldn't even hear my mom that was sitting across the table. Also, maybe because of the kitchen, it started smoking in the place while we were there. Like BBQ smoke, not cigarette smoke. But the place got foggy from the smoke and smelled like smoke towards the end of our stay. Food: We got the special burger that was on sale that day ($5 for a burger is a fantastic deal). Great tasting burger too - it was cooked to perfection and the flavors were tasty and juicy. I decided not to get a side of fries to be healthy. Mom got the chicken wings - cooked two ways - one buffalo and the other lemon pepper. Both were good. Water - For some reason, the water (I assume tap) tasted really really realllly bad here. It was a really bad after taste. I guess it's not a problem if you order an actual drink but I was unable to drink the water with my meal. That was a big turn off. The place is very "barsy", which is a word I made up myself. It is a bars bar. They take the seats from the actual bar at night and it becomes a dance area with music. The bathrooms are clean. It can get pretty crowded later in the night. They have drink specials, a plus. The staff is really extra friendly. I had a great experience with them. This is where we had dinner our first night in San Antonio for Yelp Spring Break. We were HUNGRY since we'd been drinking with no food and I looked for burgers on Yelp in walking distance and Moses Rose's popped up. The first part is finding the right way to get in! Reminded me of Vin de Syrah in San Diego, although that is where the comparison ended. RIGHT. THERE. I'll leave the rest to you. Once in, we grabbed a table and since it was the middle of the week and not too late, it was pretty empty. This place is super casual, kinda divey, just the way I like it. There are TVs all over so you can keep up on the sporting world. We both ordered burgers and I needed a painkiller to go along with that! Mmmm... the painkiller was YUM! The burgers arrived, I was starving and my burger was perfectly delicious. I seriously kept thinking about going back the whole time we were in San Antonio, but I needed to try as much as possible so did not make it back. We were served by two different people, both super friendly and attentive. i can see this place probably gets fun when it's busy and I understand its part of First Friday which we did not participate in. Hubs and I stopped in here for drinks. I walked in and was confused. I seen a free horsy ride so I hopped on and gave it a go. I was buzzed already so I enjoyed myself. But seriously how do I get in?! I opened one door and a statue was there. Scared the mess out of me. I finally seen a press here for service button and a door opened up. The folks at the bar started clapping. I looked up to see that room being live fed on a few of the TV's. I was so embarrassed!! It was all fun no biggie. We sat at the bar, was greeted immediately, was told the specials and I went with the $4 house strawberry Rita. It was surprisingly strong! I enjoyed a couple of those as hubs liked the house whiskey cokes. He said it was poured strong. I even got to redeem my free hug for checking in hahaa! Watching folks be confused about that door and not knowing they were on camera was a blast. San Antonio, Texas: Nice surprise here, didn't look like much from the street view, but once we walked in it was clear that this joint had some great atmosphere, all Texan here. Quaint little dive bar right just off of the River Walk. We came for lunch mid week, the place was quite and it took a bit to get our food. Been here several times now. Friendly staff members here. Great live music. Even if it is not the best act, they always have fun. Open late, until two in the morning. The kitchen is open until one. Not to give that much away, but the entrance is the best thing ever. I always have fun showing my friends the place. One of these days I need to be inside when I tell my friends to meet me. The inside decorations are always great. Aside from festive, they are funny. Have had the burgers which come on the most delicious buns. I especially like the sweet buns. Have had the fries with gravy and cheese, the Fry's by themselves, the Texas size nachos, the brisket Po Boy, the chicken burgers, the Alamo Burger, the wings, the fried pickles. All delicious. I will say that there's supposedly award-winning brisket is not that good. We went for dinner not the bar necessarily--The burgers were large, the buns were great, the meat was seasoned and cooked well, the brisket was quite tasty. The fries cost extra, but not too much, and they were very tasty as well. I wouldn't get them unless you can eat a bunch. I ate most, but didn't finish them myself. Inside was darker (it's a bar) but it was a neat place and I would highly recommend. The only thing I found a little disappointing was that they didn't have draft beer. Great food and wonderful servers. My husband had the travis burger and I had the lemon pepper wings. The burger was well done, which he prefers, and was still very juicy and seasoned very well! My wings were traditional and amazing. They were cooked properly with the seasonings instead of just having it thrown on like other places. I had the San Antonio Tea and Red, White, and Rosé to drink - both really good. My husband had the mule and Lynchburg lemonade, both REALLY good. They used the right lemonade for the Lynchburg. My only suggest is to refill the water more, but I'm a thirsty gal. I cannot wait to go back and show my friends! read more

Double Bummer! Having been (many times) before and knowing bar food usually takes a hot second to make, went here on a lunch break. Big mistake. Our ONE fried chicken Sammy with fries took FOREVER before it arrived, and by the time it did, had to take it to-go, because I no longer had time to eat it. Mind you, the place wasn't busy, us and a lone ranger next to us had ordered food. That's only two meals that needed to be made. Guy next to us looked pissed too, guess he had also been waiting a while. Our poor bartender/server had to go back to check for our meal at three separate trips and came back empty handed each time. He tried to excuse the kitchen by saying they were also receiving deliveries at the same time (and apparently have a hard time multi-tasking) I'd almost believe him too, had we not seen the cook come and fart around at the bar on multiple occasions. Went walking looking for a BBQ place and came across Moses Rose's. The place was empty, and the entrance is laid out a bit like an adult bookstore or something. We went in anyway, and sat down to look at menus. This place was "divey", which I don't mind at all. Unfortunately the menu basically consisted of sandwiches. We were hoping for some serious Texas BBQ. Nope. Not tonight. I ordered a BBQ sandwich with some kind of meat that was indistinguishable from 1000 other sandwiches I've eaten. I also ordered a side of fried potato salad, which I thought was a GREAT idea! IN theory it actually is a great idea, in execution here it was not. It actually was still a little cold, and not nearly crisp enough. I'm going to try to make it at home myself sometime. I'm pretty confused about the closing and opening of The MoRo on Yelp. I don't get it, regardless it gives me an opportunity to renew my opinion and review on the place. The location has been around for a little over a year now. There's a new kitchen staff and serves Bunz burgers and sandwiches. The food is still great, its just more grease, cheese and carbs. I miss the Brussels sprouts! The other thing that's constantly been an issue is the crowd control. During the week, its great. Cool crowd, nice bands, pretty smooth. The weekends after 9 pm is like the military sent out a memo to all the minors that said the MoRo does not ID, which causes an overwhelming frenzy at the bar, then makes you wait in line and that you should hurry up to flood that establishment every Friday and Saturday night and drive all the regulars away. That's what happened to us. Its happened on several occasions since these kids have caught on. Then there are only maybe 4 staff members serving up this huge facility. Its amazing. I would not be surprised when they get fined for lack of Ids being checked and selling to minors. Until they get some security or you like waiting in long drunken lines keep away on the weekends. read more

I'm digging this place for having only been there once. Interested setup at the door, kinda speakeasy-ish which will lead you to question what will happen if I push that button. Inside, this place really opens up tables galore, a very long bar, garage door style countertops. Which I wondered if you sit there an smoke since the smoke will go outside....but I don't think so. They had a texas worthy beer selection and nice selective liqour section (well at least the scotch.) They serve munchies and actual entrees. We stuck with the venison chili cheese fries since my stomach had made a deal with my liver and they agreed on giving me more alcohol as long as I ate. Back to the fries, they did it right... it was covered in chili and cheese and there was plenty of meat. Hooray! The fries were still crispy, double Hooray! Also, they have someone jamming out every night of the week, except open mic night...which I'm sure someone will do a rendition of a some song. I browsed their website and it seems they have nice mix of music acts from Ska to Country. So, this is a must stop on the downtown SA bar scene. read more

I couldn't decide between 3 and 4 stars. To be fair, we visited on New Years Day and it was early in the day so the place was dead. I don't feel like we had the true "Moses Rose's' experience. And there was some creepy guy at the bar that was begging for food or money from us and that was very uncomfortable. But neither of these things are the fault of the establishment. Let's move on to the food and the service. Both were great. I had the pulled pork on the recommendation of the bartender and it was very tasty. It was on the sweet side, and there was no advertised coleslaw (must have been out) but the best part was the bun, perfectly toasted and very much able to stand up to the pulled pork (I hate soggy buns that self destruct). I also had the fried potato salad. It was different - tasty with the little bits of bacon. My husband had one of the hot dogs and it was a good size dog. He had one of the local beers on tap and liked it as well. If/when I find myself in San Antonio again I would def go back. And I hope it's as easy to get in next time as it was this time (no embarrassing experience here). read more

The place I'm in is Moses Rose Hideout, a spacious spot belied by it's tiny entrance. Going for the brisket sandwich and the brisket quesadilla. This is before the steakhouse, so I'm keeping it light. Food came, and here's the thing, if I had been three beers and a few shots, I'm sure they'd have been great. But my sandwich had three pieces of meat and the quesadilla was thin. Sandwich meat was dry, so I guess I got tourist trapped. But the drink prices (that I couldn't drink on account of this stupid bet) were good. $3.50 for a well drink. A $20 tab for some mediocre food? Yeah sure, but the company was good around the bar and I guess it'd be a good spot to tie a good one on. I'll give it 3 stars.
