As was my experience the first time around, the staff was extremely friendly and helpful, the prices reasonable and the atmosphere comfortable. Buying glasses is a huge decision - it's like if you had to choose a shirt to wear EVERY DAY. I never felt rushed, and the sales people helped me find something that I liked. My first time with Moscot, I bought a pair of Miklis for about $400 - a bit on the pricey side (but cheap for Mikli). This time I went with the Yale, one of the nerdy Sol Moscot timeless original designs - and only set me back $180. Get a pair of the Moscot originals and you'll be in good company - Johnny Depp, Glenn Close, and other celebs wear them - but more importantly, they identify you as a real New Yorker. read more

I have been going to this place for over three years now. I am very loyal if I love everything about a place, and this is a good as it gets. Dr. Butler is as great as the reviews suggest, and everyone at this location has always been friendly and easy going. When I first needed glasses I walked into a lot of different optical places. I couldn't BELIEVE how snobby many of them were. I chose Moscot based on their reputation for fashionable frame styles without the pretentious sales staff. When I met Dr. Butler and he wowed me with his charm, I was about ready to legally marry this place. I'll never forget the first time I chose frames. I can be a picky nightmare if someone is impatient, and the guy behind the counter didn't flinch while I tried on a ridiculous number of frames. It is possible he surmised that I was shooting for a world record of eyeglass frame rotation. He remained friendly and calm as if it was normal for a girl to methodically try frames on for an agonizing amount of time. I wouldn't go here if I didn't love it, but an added bonus for me, is to support this old New York family business. I first moved to Manhattan in 1986, and I slowly watched so many of my favorite "only in NY" businesses" disappear. Don't even get me started about Zito's Bread in the West Village. Love, love LOVE this place. They customer service style is relaxed and attentive but not "I have to make my commission" smothering. Just remember, their policy is to let you browse uninterrupted (so don't get bent out of shape because they haven't pounced on you like some places). This place has the feel of a small town business (where everyone knows everyone) and yet it is very modern in design. I don't have contacts but I thought it was a plus that you can order your refills (replacements?) from their online website. They accept VSP which is how I ended up here in the first place, and I will never go anywhere else. Reminder: if you are the type that demands immediate attention, then you need to walk up to the counter and specifically ask for help, otherwise you will be waiting. Added benefit: This place is super accessible (but not ADA compliant - steps The 14th Street subway stop is right at the corner! After emailing with Julie, I came to the store and she found frames that were the exact size of my broken glasses, popped the lenses into the new frames, and VIOLA! New glasses. They were somewhat helpful, so I'm giving them one more star than they deserve. I have had nothing but problems with the $1200 pair of glasses with progressive lenses that they talked me into. Special frames that are not supposed to become unaligned (very important with progressive lenses). And the highest quality progressive lenses (a big upcharge from my insurance). These glasses were never right. Moscot would continually adjust them, but they were just never right. The fact that they needed adjusting so frequently should have been my first clue -- the ultra-expensive frames they sold me were supposed not to ever need adjustment. And the fact that even at their best, the glasses were never right should have been a second clue. After a year of this, I went down the street to another optical shop, who took a look and found out that I had been given the cheap, generic progressive lenses. The other store sold me a pair of glasses with the best-quality progressive lenses and a sturdy frame -- what an amazing difference. Oh, and my out-of-pocket cost was only $180, or $300 less than the "top-of-the-line" pair Moscot talked me into the previous year. read more

STOP!! DO NOT SHOP HERE!! THEY DO NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR WORK!! Large selection - yes. Fashionable - yes. Expensive - yes. But pray you don't have a problem. I bought a pair of frames which were promised for delivery xx days later. OK, so they were 2-3 weeks late...I can live with that. Then today the frames broke; the hinge came apart. Not just a loose screw,but the metal on the hinge actually broke. When I went to have it fixed....the cost was on me. Seems my frames were not "Moscot" frames, but by another manufacturer and that manufacturer's warranty had run out. How was I supposed to know they were not "Moscot" frames when I bought them? You've got me? How was I supposed to know Moscot would not back up the products they sell? Dunno? I got some gobbledygook about how the frames weren't defective since they broke outside of the warranty period and somehow that must have been my fault. They would be happy to replace them at full cost to me. I understand that rendering quality service and backing up the products a merchant sells are rapidly becoming unknown qualities, esp. here in NYC. I don't like it - but I understand it is happening. Forgive the rant....but find a small mom-and-pop optician that maybe - just maybe - still gets what service to the customers who make or break their business is all about. read more

Ooohhh Sol, **sigh**. You're not the first man to let me down, but I admit this one especially hurts. I've been a loyal to you for over 15 years and have always loved our relationship. Sure there have been some bumps along the way - the woman who was the long time counter person in the exam room (office manager?/reservationist/customer service rep?) left a while back and service went from exceptional to average. But I was willing to overlook it. Until my last visit. The break came when I brought in a pair of frames I bought at Moscot 6-7 years ago for an updated set of lenses. It took 2 weeks before they called - again, I am standing by my man Sol in spite of the slow turn around. When I picked them up they told me it was $480 for the lenses. OK. (deep breath) I know its expensive here. But I have always been lucky enough to have vision insurance to chip away at a bit of the cost. I pulled the insurance card and with out even batting an eye or offering an apology, the woman told me they no longer accept insurance. Now after taking my insurance for 15 years, don't you think that is a change you might want to share Sol? And to add insult to injury she just sets the glasses on the counter. I'm like... "ummm, I rode my bike down here, can I get a case for that?" so she hands me a plastic clam shell that looks like something you would fill with cole slaw at the bodega salad bar. Now I get it. I bought the frames from SM a few years back, but for 480 bucks I kind of expect the staff to act like they want my expensive glasses to make it home safely (and maybe get a swank case for them at the same time). I walked in and there were a couple folks being helped for adjustments and not one of the multiple guys working there even acknowledged my existence by saying hello or I'll be with you as soon as possible. I looked around a little (still with no acknowledgement) and all the frames looked trendy but not good quality. I didn't realize they only have their own brand, so there's very little selection, they look cheap and they can't even say hi?! Don't deserve my hard-earned cash or yours! read more

I've been wearing Moscot for years and a big part of the reason is the amazing customer service. I was recently in NYC for a few days and took some frames to the Union Square store for a lens update--I was only in town for 6 days so I needed a quick turn around. Moscot had my glasses done on schedule but the prescription in one pair was problematic. I returned to SF and contacted Justin in customer service. He had me send the glasses back to NY and took care of everything without hitch. I received the glasses with new lenses in short order and of course, they're perfect! Thanks, Justin & Moscot. I never felt rushed to make a selection and now I have a beautiful pair of Frankies in Olive/Tortoise. I also saw the optometrist Dr. Courtney Case (she's now at the Orchard St. location). She fitted me with multi-focal contact lenses which actually correct my vision. I've seen several doctors for multi-focal contacts and they've never gotten it right. I'll be back! read more

I looked everywhere in lower Manhattan for new frames and finally found the perfect pair here. I'm very happy with them, and the cost was decent. Good range of prices and styles, especially thinner frames for smaller faces. Good customer service, friendly staff, etc. They accepted my insurance for the prescription, but not frames or lenses. Misleading, but not their fault -- my insurance company lists them as a provider for all services. Since they're out-of-network, one man said they were willing to "help out" to match insurance coverage, but the employee who rang them up said they just take off a standard $50 no matter what. They were affordable enough, so whatever. I'm curious to hear what people think about General Vision (for lenses) down the street: if they've had any long-term problems, etc. read more

Insanely great (with apologies to Steve Jobs) eye care and eye wear. I swear!! I've been coming to Moscot for over a decade now, on a tip from my law firm's weekend word processing coordinator and superstar. The frames are CANONICAL New York style, and in recent years the expansion of materials (from original acetates to current titaniums) and shapes has been nothing short of staggering. I still have my original, clear Nebb frames (x2), and just picked up a sparkling new pair of Gelt Dark Tortoise frames, with clip-ons, naturally! But BEYOND the good look, there are two deeper values at play here. First and foremost, this firm is about EYE CARE. I read for a living (well, I write and speak, too, but...). Sharpness of vision is integral to my sense of my own capabilities. The refractions I have had at Moscot have been consistently excellent -- from both Dr. Butler in earlier times to Dr. Rogerson now. It is SOOOOO important to take your time with your prescription, and mine is a difficult (progressive, astigmatism-correcting) combination. In addition, as others have noted, the retina imaging that is done at Moscot is a key differentiator. Do this diagnostic test. You'll be glad you did. Secondly, the non-medical part of the operation is about CUSTOMER SERVICE. Moscot is a very popular retail establishment. As such, in times of peak demand (most Saturday afternoons!) it will be hit or miss for you unless you are easily satisfied or just plain lucky. The eyeglass fitting staff is VERY GOOD at 14th Street. They will steer you away from frames that cannot be fitted to your face functionally and flatteringly. But if you choose a "statement" frame that will be difficult to mold to your facial features, then get ready to spend some time with these professionals as they try to do their best. Also, my phone calls to customer service that have gone to voicemail have always drawn responses within MINUTES. Enough said. Satisfied customer. Thousands of dollars spent. I went to Moscot since I was in need of an optometrist near my job and saw the great reviews. My experience has been 100% positive. The entire staff is courteous and professional, from those at the front desk, to the doctors to the staff that helps you find the right frames. I hate picking out eyeglass frames b/c I rarely find any that fit my face... The rep in the frames department pulled a bunch of pairs that she thought would suit me, and we narrowed it down to the right pair as I tried them on. This was a quick process but I was confident that she was giving me an honest opinion and good advice. Moscot has a good selection of frames, ranging from conservative and classic to trendy. After I accidentally broke my frames, the staff at Moscot were helpful in ordering a new pair and giving me a loaner set while I waited for mine to arrive. The staff is nice and friendly and that is what keeps me going back hoping things will change but I have never had an order for glasses or contacts filled without multiple calls, unexplained delays, and much frustration. Don't know what it is but it's always taken weeks and much prodding to finally get something ordered. I have given up and am going to try lenscrafters, who were very efficient and helpful when I had to have a small repair done. A million times more reliable and timely. I like that it's such a part of NY and would to support it but it's just too hard to get anything done on time. read more

The 2 pairs of Moscot frames I own, Hesh in black and Yale in grey, are great. The Lower East Side location is a real throwback to the old days, but I have made my purchases at the Chelsea store, which has a bright new modern feel. The experienced sales people have always taken their time helping me find the right pair of frames that meet my fashion needs. There are not any heavy sales tactics, just friendly assistance. I felt I could try every pair of frames on in the store without annoying the salesman (Jay helped me most recently). Finding the right pair of frames has always been a challenge, but I Moscot has the best selection of frames for my taste. I have been wearing glasses for 18 years and have never been happier than I am with my Moscots. Every time I go in to get my frames adjusted the staff is just as helpful as when I made my initial purchases. Thanks guys! read more

I was in for an eye exam and so after I asked them to tighten up my frames on the glasses I had bought there before. Well, the guy chips my lenses, says sorry and then asks me for $50 for a new lens. I should have walked out. He tells me he's doing me a favor because he gave me 50% off the regular charge, and, Oh yes, I should have known there was a risk in having him tighten the frames. I have purchased a pair of Mykita frames many years ago and I have returned to Moscot several times over the years to update my prescription. Moscot no longer carries Mykita frames so I didn't expect to receive a full overhaul and replacement of one of the broken temples completely free of charge!
