This place is rundown and shabby and the staff are weird: tall sweaty guy hovering over you as you browse; creepy Italian guy watching you like the groundskeeper at a cemetery. I was not impressed by the sweaty giant's lack of product knowledge: claiming that two frames were the same although they were differently-named and plainly varied in size; not knowing that certain frames were numbered editions; etc. BAD ATTITUDE, POOR DEMEANOR. You are here to SELL, and you're not doing that if you're flinging your bodily fluids all over your clientele as you gaslight them. Go to VISIONARY OPTICS Chelsea instead. read more

One of my favorite stores EVER -- the staff are so smart and helpful; Dr. Wendy fully saved my eyes. Love the variety of frames as well. I left w a pair of sunnies (the Solal with red sides) and an optical pair, I think called the Anouk. I put it on and click, it was perfect. The thing is they are not just trying to sell you a pair of frames- they are aiming to find the right pair of frames for your face. April 2019: I've been making purchases here steadily for about 15 years. Always a great product, inconsistent service. About 8 years ago a male salesperson harassed me, including a creepy note to my home address. He's long gone. I got to work with an incredible woman for years, but she has moved on as well. I went in today excited about new frames, walked in the door, and it's all men. Buying frames is a pretty intimate experience for me, and I will only work with a woman. Especially given what happened back in 2010 here with that guy. I said hi and asked for a woman salesperson, and a man told me there are none. He started to tell me why I would like working with him, and I cut him off and said 'that's not going to work. Thank you, but could you please tell me what location I could go to to find a woman salesperson.' He told me that all the salespeople are men now! Unbelievable! In 2019. New York City. There are many many reasons a woman might not be able to work with a male salesperson on a purchase like this. And there isn't one Selima where I can go and work with a woman? Let me say this, I've never had a worse shopping experience than I had here. First, I do need to point out that there is only one particular associate I am having problem with. Other sales I talked to were nice. - The problem started when I went to the shop to adjust my newly bought frames with prescription. The actual technician was inside and never came out. This particular associate just hand my glasses in and ask him to adjust it. I would love to know how technicians can give great adjustments without looking at how the frame looks on the person. But silly me, not trying to cause any trouble, I went along with the associate. I tried the frame on a couple of times and sent it back a couple of times (because the associate was acting as a middle man and the technician may not even know what needs to be adjusted). After a couple of tries, I felt it was still not sitting right on my nose. I voiced my concerns with this associate, he looked very impatient and told me, the technician has tried his best to adjust, so I should be assured. When I left the shop, little did I know we were going into a pandemic. - I started to wore the new glasses on that day when I got home. It took me less than 10 mins to realize, yup you guessed it, the glasses do not fit. It slides down every 3 mins to the end of my nose, and I literally cannot wear it at all. When NYC entered phase 3 opening, I started to call them to schedule a time to possibly see someone to fix the frame. I called the shop, the same person picked up, he first told me I needed to email them to schedule an appointment, calling is not suffice to make an appointment. Very strange but I did it right away. No response. One week later, I called again. Still the same person, told me he is going to call me back, never heard back from them. I was so frustrated that I even started to call other locations to see if they have any technician who can adjust the frame for me. - Let me just say this, what would you feel if you spent $1000 on something that you need to use immediately, tried to fix it before the pandemic but failed, tried to call, email, left voice messages, and never get any kind of customer support? I don't even feel disappointed, I'm honestly just disgusted at how he can handle any customers like this. I know we are at a unprecedented time, and I'm not asking too much. When someone have such a disrespectful attitude and fail to get anything done, then we have a problem. I feel the need to point out the exact person I was dealing with, as all other associates I talked to were very nice. The hype is warranted. This place is gold. There are hundreds - maybe thousands - of eyeglasses stores in the city, which can be quite overwhelming for someone who doesn't do too well in the decision-making arena (i.e. me). After perusing Google a bit, I found a pretty substantial body of evidence recommending Selima. For good reason. I've never been completely comfortable with my glasses, but times are a-changin'. I can't get enough of my new pair, and I have this gem of a store to thank for it. So, I had my old pair of glasses for a good four or five years before finally treating myself to a new pair. After opting for Selima, I told myself I must find new glasses here, lest I start inviting too much choice into the mix. Selima has quite the impressive variety of frames but it's thankfully not overwhelming. It helps that the store itself has a charming, old-timey feel to it. The frames here are anything but dated, but the vibe is quite vintage - all of the decor is wooden and beautiful, just lovely. Going to give a huge shout out now to the wonderful sales associate, Lacey (sorry if I spelled your name wrong...if you're even reading this...), who is helpful, knowledgeable, personable, sweet, and way cooler than I could ever be. I showed her my current frames (I found it helpful to bring my old pair with me for comparison's sake) and told her I wanted something in the same family but that I'd like to be a bit more daring this time. The power was pretty much out of my hands at that point - she gave options that were very similar to my old pair, as well as ones that were riskier in one direction or another. About 30-45 minutes later, I settled on the pair that I'm currently wearing. It typically takes me an egregiously long time to choose a pair of glasses - I've spent hours in stores before - but this process went shockingly smoothly. Teamwork! Notes on what's in stock: -Selima carries their own frames as well as your more typical name brands (Tom Ford, etc.). I honestly like Selima's frames better, but that's just me. If you want the label (no judgment if you do), Oliver People's is in the neighborhood. But I fully endorse Selima. -While I'm not that well-versed in relative pricing of glasses, I'm confident in saying that Selima is a higher-end spot. As is the case with most eyewear stores, there's a good range of prices here - you certainly don't need to shell out 500 bucks if you want to stay on the conservative side. -Overall, I was quite impressed with the selection, style-wise. They've got plenty of your more standard frames, but you can find unique/funky/quirky/all of the above here too. They've got enough variety here that you can pretty well delineate what's in your comfort zone and what's not. After you choose a pair of frames, the rest is pretty standard. They take your measurements and your prescription and then you'll just need to wait for them to put lenses in. Once your frames are ready, more standard adjustments, and then...new glasses! read more

Manolo Blahnik girls perhaps think that I sound crazy. I would choose eyeglasses over Christian Louboutin shoes. That is how crazy I can be when I see cool glasses. I've read Selima Optique reviews on yelp and always wanted to try this place. I finally took my Mykita frame to this place today to get new lenses. It took only 20 min for them to get me new lenses for my frame. Not just that, I found this amazing vIntage Cazal eye glasses from 80's. The glasses certainly doesn't make my world look more beautiful than it already is but it did made my day. :) Their buying and selection were impressive. From Modern 'Cutler and Gross' , Mykita, Salt, Alain Mikli... to Viintage Duhill, vintage C.dior, vintage Cazal. Note: The staff were fantastic, helpful and so friendly. read more

I'm shocked to see any negative reviews for Selima Optique-- I had nothing but a wonderful experience here. I've been into probably every eyewear store in NYC in search of the perfect pair--you name it, big or small, I graced it--and S.O. was seriously the best in terms of style, price, and helpfulness. It seems like some people found the staff to be unfriendly because they didn't bombard you, but that's exactly what I hate about most eyewar stores-- they follow you around and get pushy and try to convince you to like something you may not feel inclinded toward. I found the staff at S.O. to be super friendly and helpful when I needed them, but they also gave me space and time to shop on my own and they weren't the least bit pushy. I LOVVVVE my new pair of frames, and I've gotten tons of compliments so far. I don't think they are expensive compared to any other eyewear stores (I'm speaking of designer frames), and I'm not supporting Luxottica, so I was extremely happy to find S.O. The selection is great, and for smaller people such as myself who don't want to wear massive frames, they have a nice collection of smaller/proportional frames that no other shops seemed to cater toward. Also, when I went to pick up my frames, they were so meticulous with getting the frame fit just perfect and really took their time to make me happy, even though they were just about to close. Had the best shopping experience with my sister recently at Selima Optique. We wandered in after going to another place for glasses. My sister had in mind what she wanted and described it to the attentive shop worker Lucas. At first it seemed like maybe they didn't have what she wanted but he was creative and brought her a pair of sunglasses without lenses. I entered this store without a single thought of buying anything and, lo and behold, walked out with a shiny new pair of sunglasses. I just love them to death! The salesperson (I forgot her name) was very sweet. She was helpful and she treated me like a VIP customer. She helped me look for the perfect pair of sunglasses and shared a lot of fun stories. We went here yesterday (June 1, 2013) with money to spend on a new pair of frames. We walked in to find two employees helping one customer. We said "hello" while entering the store and were flatly ignored by the employees (younger woman, middle-aged man). That was a little off-putting, but we decided to browse the selection anyway. After about 10 minutes the male employee begrudgingly comes over and let's us try on a pair of frames, says nothing, then puts the frames back and walks away. Shortly thereafter we left, but while walking out we said "thank you." BLANK STARES from the two employees. We left thinking "what the fuck?" Then we walked across the street and bought a new pair of glasses from Oliver Peoples, where at least the employees were happy to help us without giving an attitude. read more

I love this store - everyone that works here is really friendly and helpful. I must've taken up about 2 hours both times I was here before I decided on a pair of glasses and they were AOK with that. Great selection of eyewear: Cutler & Gross, LA Eyewords, Alain Mikli, etc. Also a ton of vintage eyewear: fun stuff from Cazal, Dunhill, etc. They also sell sunglasses. I think Selima's own line is pretty amazing - that was what I ultimately chose and it was nice because I got to meet Selima herself - head-to-toe eccentricity, very french, very smiley. Went there to get a vision exam to renew my driver's license. They put the hard sell on me implying my vision was bad and I was barely passing, trying to get me to buy glasses from them. I went to an actual eye doctor the next week, who ran a full battery of tests and said my vision is actually 20/20. Total scam. read more

In retrospect two stars is too harsh given that I would say the glasses themselves are 5 stars, I really do love them. Management at Selima brought it to my attention that the increase to $400 was an IT error, but the two prior increases weren't, including one that was put in place after a wait list had already began at an earlier price. I think they have great frames and employees who seem to care, there are just a few points that I had previously mentioned which I did not agree with, and those remain. But lets call it what it is, if you want great glasses, and you are willing to shell out the dough, you are going to get what you came for. I suspect as Selima grows they will become better at responding and coordinating with their IT department, which is really the only thing lacking, because the products definitely aren't. Selima, now that you guys have hit the jackpot by getting on-screen exposure (even if unintended), don't sacrifice your great attention to detail and quality in order to meet increased demand like so many others in the past have done!! read more

I had purchased two frames, prescription glasses and sunglasses. Upon consulting with Facial Index - a reliable eyeglass brand/store nearby, they said I was sold glasses where the nose ridge is way too large for my nose. As a result, my glasses slips down when I wear them, and my eye lashes hit the lenses. This shouldn't happen. Same with my sunglasses - they rest on my cheeks. Both pairs were meant for a larger nose ridge. Lesson learned: most eye glass boutiques are trying to sell you shape and color. The workers don't know or refuse to admit that the glasses won't fit you. They are trying to make money, and they don't want to lose customers. Nonetheless - the brand's glasses are still considered good. The service sucks. Being overly "helpful" with oohs and aaahs does nothing. read more

Big shoutout to the store manager, Angel, for always having his customers best interest in mind! I am so glad I decided to go with Selima for my beautiful new frames (that he helped pick out as well). I brought a pair of plastic glasses in here to have nose pads installed a couple of years ago and the process wasn't the greatest, although I am pleased with the outcome. First, I was told it would take less than a week and that they would call me when the glasses were completed. After a week and a half, they still hadn't called me, so I called them and was informed that they had run out of the plastic nosepads we had agreed upon, and would metal be ok? I had to go into the store again to check out the metal type and let them know if it would be ok. Then finally, 9 days later, they called me in to pick up my glasses. Installing the nosepads ended up costing me more than I had expected, as well. That being said, 2 years later, my glasses and their installed nosepads are still going strong. I'm very happy with their installation and they way they have held up and functioned. I wouldn't mind continuing to wear the same glasses/nose pads for a 3rd year and perhaps longer if I could. I most likely would come back to Selima if I had a new pair of glasses to add nose pads too, though not if I was in a rush and needed the glasses immediately. read more

I wanted new lenses for my glasses, my glasses cost me 2,500$ retail. I had pink lenses and I told them to match the color and tint. I pick up glasses and the lenses were brown, the lenses were cut flat, the frames were falling off my face, and they miraculously somehow managed to make them worse than when I had brought them in. I asked for my original frames back, and a refund, he took the glasses back and broke off the screw. Mans tried to tell me he understands why I'm upset, and gives a half ass apology. I demanded a refund for their incompetence and he told me he can't refund cause the frames are through someone else's. Worst experience ever. Fuck this place. And I love Larry who is spectacular and has welcomed me with open arms all three (3!) times I've been back to have them adjusted. So I'm a little picky? At Selima, they welcome the picky. FIVE DAYS! this is pretty much unheard of, especially when considering the strength and type of lenses I get. so when I said i was in LOVE before, i truly mean it now. I can't believe I walked in on a monday night, and they had everything done by friday morning, and all because I told them I was leaving for my parents house this weekend and wanted my glasses before then. and when I went to pick them up and get them adjusted they didn't mind at all that I sent the frames back to get adjusted 7-8 times. they were extremely patient with me, and gave me a kickin case to keep them it. i really can't see myself ever buying glasses somewhere else. read more

I have mixed feelings about Optique. Three stars for a wide selection of beautiful, high-end frames. However, I wasn't happy with my buying experience. I was given two quotes for 1.6 and 1.7 indexes. I decided to go with 1.6 to make glasses more affordable, however, ended up paying more. Unfortunately, I realized this after I left the store when I added up the cost of the frames and lenses together. When I turned back to the store, the salesperson explained that he gave me a different, more expensive brand of the lenses. I ended up paying extra for something I didn't need. When I picked up my eyeglasses the associate didn't take the time to check if they were adjusted properly, even though I suggested an adjustment. Eyeglasses were slipping off my nose by the time I got home. It is such a pity that a store that carries high-end frames lacks on customer service. read more

Wow! Was my first time at Selima. I had a great experience, and I love my new frames! Amanda was AMAZING! She really knew how to pick out glasses for both my face shape and prescription. I tend to forget that the glasses look different after the prescription lens go in, especially for someone like me with a heavy prescription.
