Located in a less bustling part of Chinatown, this was a very convenient place to get my contact lens exam. Be sure to bring a picture of your current contact cases or old prescription, as the optometrist needs that information before he can write the prescription. Otherwise you'll have to pay extra for the contact lens fitting if this is your first time getting contacts. The contact lens exam was a breeze. Had the standard "stare at this hot air balloon" machine then was brought into the exam room where I read letters and numbers off the wall with the glasses machine. Then put in a pair of trial lenses to confirm I could still see the numbers/letters on the wall. After paying, I was on my way! The whole thing was super quick and I'll keep this place in mind for my future contact lens needs. read more

I came here because it started to be hard to see faraway things clearly. Prior to going here, I've never been to the eye doctor because my vision was good, based on school eye exams. Fast forward 10 years later I felt I may need glasses. It was easy to get an appointment, I walked at the end of the day and they were able to schedule one the next day for me. You can also make an appointment by phone. The eye doctor was fantastic - he answered all of my questions thoroughly, didn't rush me, and it turns out that I've become a little near-sighted and have a slight astigmatism in one of my eyes. He was really patient in answering all my questions and didn't try to up sell me on anything. I will say that normally I don't like to go to any type of doctor, because usually they are not helpful, and are always rushing to get me out the door without educating me on my concerns. But this was not the case. I would gladly come here again in the future. The doctor seemed to genuinely care about his patients. The front desk manager was also great, and the carry a broad selection of glasses, including designer brands. They ensured me that if there are any issues with my glasses to come back and they can help fix. I selected the pair I wanted and it was finished a couple days later. I highly recommend this place. The staff is knowledgeable, the customer service is good, and the services are speedy. read more

I came here almost a year ago and I know I'm kinda giving this review kinda late but whatever. My experience here was terrible.I felt judge by my opinion by a young man when I was picking out my glasses. I was deciding on which glasses I want and I saw this really nice one with blue frames and I really liked it. Although I'm only 23 years old I still think there my style and I really liked it. The thing was that a guy recommended these purple framed glasses which really isn't my style, I told them that they looked kinda young and not my fit. He just continues to talk to me for 20 mins about why I should buy those glasses instead [cause the purple ones cost more] Then finally he gave up and let me pick my style, then he decided all the sudden to charged me $100 more bec of some reason that I really didn't understand. So I ended up paying an extra $100 which was fine by me and when they told me that was glasses were "ready" i went to pick them up. He also told me that I should be careful with the glasses. The only competent individual in this establishment is the eye doctor who seems to maintain a level of professionalism but unfortunately the front store staff have an arrogant and dismissive attitude. I understand we're in Chinatown and haggling for a deal is common but not in a place of business where insurance is covering the cost. One particular employee by the name of Z, is by far the worst and deceptive sales rep. After my eye exam as opposed to explaining my coverage that my carrier will provide without hesitation attempting to have me pay out of pocket. Stay away from this place!!!!! This place is very clean and organized, the staff are polite as well. They had 2 boxes of frames to choose from under my mom's insurance. My gripe is that I've had to come twice now in 1 week since picking up her glasses because each plastic nose pad has fallen off, first one, then the other. I hadn't had this problem before at her other optical place (which went out of business), so I'm a bit disappointed that the glasses aren't the best quality. read more

Terrible experinence.I bought glasses from this store,then I come back to adjust the frame cause it keep slipping.A young guy took my glasses and started to do it without taking the lenses out from the frame,then when he finished job, I find out it's blurry when I put my glasses on.I asked them,at first they said it's because the glass was not clean so they kept wash it nuntill they find out it's broken inside the lens. The next thing was they blame it on my glasses is old and said the young guy wasn't touching the lense to prove that's not their fault. I swear to god the lense is clear before I came in the store, and I kept told them hope they can give me a reson I can accepted.But no,they just two receptionists take a look random then told me it's my fault. 4/5 stars because my encounter with the business was maybe 10 minutes tops. Backstory: I stopped by a LensCrafters in the financial district yesterday and asked if they would tightened my Burberry glasses for me because it was falling off my face and I had to constantly push it up. The lady there gave me a disclaimer that it was at my own risk and maybe I should go somewhere that had a license because they don't have a license... I had no idea what she was talking about. She said I need to find a place with optometrist license... regardless, she kept looking down at whatever it was that she was doing and I didn't feel as though she wanted to service my glasses. So I left. After walking around Chinatown today, I randomly stopped in Universal Optical to see if they could tighten the same pair of Burberry glasses. The lady said no problem and asked me to take a seat. I waited briefly as the guy was finishing up with another customer. I sat down and explained why I needed the arms tightened. He immediately popped out the lenses and got to work (which gave me a minor heart attack because the glasses were pretty pricey) but he was a pro. He pretty much reshaped the arms so that they fit my face better. After checking to make sure that nothing was lopsided or crooked, I asked him how much I owe him. He told me don't worry about it and if I had any problems, I could always go back. HOW AWESOME IS THAT! Not only did they have good customer service but they also had an awesome selection of designer frames and I would definitely go back for my future pair of glasses. read more

Got my new frame and lenses and new lenses for my old frame in less than an hour. Eye exam to picking out frames and coming back to get the frame adjusted was super efficient and thorough. All 100 of my questions were answered with patience Thanks everyone who helped me (did not get their names) but everyone was helpful. Doc explained what astigmatism was to me like on r/explainlikeimfive he knows his stuff! The staff is fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese, Fuijianese and English. They are out of the free tote that's included with the check in. I wished I checked in before I paid- $10 that coulda bought me some bakery goodies ugh. After several places told me they were unable to repair my brand new tom ford glasses, I was recommended to try universal optical. The staff was extremely helpful and welcoming from the start. About 30 minutes later, my glasses were repaired and refitted. When I asked how much I owe, they told me there would be no charge and that they were happy to help! Went in today for the first time to get an eye exam and a pair of lenses for glasses I bought recently. The good: Customer service was very good; the guy who helped me in particular was very accommodating and I was able to haggle with him to get a discount (he was able to communicate w/ me in English which was a plus) He waived the $15 eye exam fee for me (Most optical stores would have charged some kind of eye exam fee if you were just getting lenses and not the frames) I ended up paying $75 for lenses, which is probably a lot cheaper than American optical stores, but is the standard rate for regular cut, anti glare lenses for people w/ slightly poor vision (if you have very bad vision, you're going to end up paying over $100). The eye doctor seemed knowledgeable and carefully took his time to examine my eyes, definitely a lot longer than eye doctors at other Chinese optical stores. The exam was very thorough and probably took a good 20 minutes; other places usually take 5-10 minutes at least in my experience. This store is definitely a lot better in terms of price and customer service compared to its other store Flushing Optical, which has gone down the drain in recent years; they don't give much of a discount nor are they as customer oriented. So why the 2 stars for Universal Optical? Well, I just got my brand new, pricey glasses a few days ago and there were absolutely no scratches on the frame; it was in perfect condition. After I got my lenses at Universal Optical, my glasses came back with several scratches on the legs of the frame, including one very, very noticeable one. I had a feeling they might not have been that careful w/ it since the lenses were done in less than an hour. I guess this is what I get for buying lenses in Chinatown. So if you decide to go to Universal Optical, please enter at your own risk if you have expensive frames you want lenses for or if you are planning on buying expensive frames at the store itself. In the end, your frames might be returned to you scratched. read more

Great customer service, the sales lady was friendly very helpful in helping me find the perfect frames. And they have a pretty wide selection of frames to choose from. I love my new glasses! The previous optical store I went to couldn't adjust my glasses to fit my face so they kept sliding off. But at Universal Optical, they were able to adjust the temple just right so my glasses stay on without sliding off every 5 minutes. I would definitely go back for my next pair of glasses! read more
