After flying 2,000 miles from San Diego, CA to Anchorage, AK, I made it a point to stop here the day of my arrival. Moose's Tooth has been a pizzeria that I have been to years. Even after I moved on from the "Last Frontier State" to sunny California, this restaurant has a unique taste to their pizzas and memorable brews on draft that make me coming back for more, no matter the time and distance it takes to get there.
My whole family came in to dine, and I was hungry! Flying from SD, connecting at Seattle, and finally arriving to AK takes a toll on the stomach. Those mini-pretzels and cookie biscuits the flight attendants give to you just don't make you feel full. On a Thursday evening, the wait was not too long (30 mins.), You could get a pint of beer while you wait, I recommend their rapple combination. This is a raspberry wheat and hard apple ale mix, which is awesomely not too sweet and light. Sometimes you want to just skip the pizza and grab a growler from them. Prices are reasonable considering it is Alaska.
Seated, we started with some appetizers/salads. Their ceasar salad is loaded with cheese, and you can sundried tomatoes, blackened chicken breast, or salmon for extra. Salads here are stacked, so you won't leave hungry for sure. If you are watching your calories, simply ask for the cheese/dressings on the side. The salad itself was fresh tasting, and the chicken was moist and juicy. Salmon dip with toasted bread tasted thick and not too salty. There was no fishy taste with the dip, which is impressive considering salmon is not the mildest fish in the world.
Well the main event is of course the pizzas, right? Out of our party of 10, 2 large pizzas should do the trick and then some. We had some leftovers for sure. Heads up, you can request for wheat crust up to a medium size, and you can half your pizzas with 2 different flavors. I want to note that their pizzas come pre-sliced in sixths, almost the size of Costco's slices. Diner beware :) Chicken bacon ranch, Santa's Little Helper, Avalanche, and spicy thai chicken pizza were the choices. The wait for the pizzas is about 45 mins, but patience my young padawans as the wait is well worth it.
The spicy thai chicken comes with roasted chicken, red onions, bean sprouts, carrot threads, cilantro, mozzarella, provolone, and peanut sauce. It tasted sweet and tangy, the same as it was years ago. The chicken/bacon/ranch pizza is with parsley, roma tomatoes, red onions, cheddar, mozzarella, and provolone. This is my favorite flavor and most indulgent from the entire menu. They are not stingy with the bacon and glistening cheeses on the pie made shed tears of joy as I munched on that pizza slice.
It is hard to eat quietly while eating the Avalanche. Its pepperoni, blackened chicken, bacon, red onions, parsley, cheddar, mozzarella, provolone, and barbeque sauce makes me want to sing praises of delicious food notes and a big grinning smile. The culinary impression and impact that this slice gave me such a hard hitting shot to the brain. It is as if my brain sustained a bacon/pepperoni flavor avalanche.
We can't forget about the Santa's Little Helper! Showcasing some pepperoni, blackened chicken, grilled steak, bacon, red peppers, cilantro, mozzarella, provolone, and marinara, Santa definitely has a big appetite! The steak on the pizza is the winner among the toppings. At this point, I am about to hit the pizza coma. If you frequently eat these pizzas, you will definitely get a Santa belly hahaha. But oh boy did I feel jolly after!
Service was decent, and there was a lot of staff help to take care of us. Last time I was here was a few years, and I am glad they have not changed. I think I have recieved my Moose's Tooth fix for the next few years as well. There is a reason why they are always busy no matter the day. They do pizza well, and the local craft brew helps complement the dining experience. If you are visiting Anchorage, try this place out. I really think you will like it.
