It's 3/27/2023. I've given this policy lots of time before commenting on it. Why do we still have to wait for an employee to open the door for us? COVID is long gone, no one is wearing masks, but this policy remains. All I can think of is that it's some sort of anti-homeless-people initiative or some other way to keep "unsavory" people out of the store. They still are the best place for the best ethanol-containing beverages and it's their store, they can do whatever they want, I just have no idea why they are adding additional friction to the shopping experience. One other thing: no more chilled cans of wine, you'll have to go to Brown Jug for that now. Why? I have no idea. Canned wine probably has 10X the demand as Sake and...that ethanol containing beverage has a massive cooler dedicated to it. read more

My son is turning 21 this week and we are having a sushi party to celebrate. We thought it would be fun to have a saké tasting in honor of coming of age as well. I follow Bodega's Insta and took note they happened to be having sake themed specials this week. Kismet! I don't know a lot about saké, so I explained my plans to the gentleman behind the counter and he kindly assisted me. He offered some suggestions and provided lots of information about saké without being overbearing. I like this little liquor and wine store. I have been coming here for years off and on and have been surprised by the knowledgeable staff. I 1st stopped in when a buddy of mine was fishing for unique bourbons and called me with a find! It was the 125Th Anniversary Bottle of Four Roses. He knew I loved the brand of Small Batch. I picked up 2 pricy bottles around $100/ea. Most expensive bourbon I had ever bought. It was amazing and when I ran out of one bottle and half the next drinking it sparingly over a year I called them to get myself another bottle. They had only brought 6 into the state. I had gotten 2 of the only 6 In the state and they were gone. DRATS! Online if you could find one they were going for $500/ea. Liquid Gold Bourbon! I have 2 shots left and saving it! Most recently my wife's Dr. said an alternative and healthier choice of wines are called 'Dry Farm Wines' what the heck is that. So being a usual goer to Brown Jug I asked their wine guru does he have any of these heart heathy 'Dry Farm Wines' he said never heard of them. So La Bodega came to mind! I inquired and they immediately knew what Dry Farm Wines were. Dry Farm Wines are non irrigation water fed grapes. In other words in California and basically the US farmers water their grape vines with well or piped in water. In Europe basically the entire EU all wines are Dry Farmed. The grapes grow with nature's rains only. So with that knowledge I produced a list of wines I had researched with 90 rating plus wines Dry Farmed and they ordered 2 of them for us. While there I bought 6 other Dry Farm Wines per their suggestions all wines chosen were excellent. One in particular stuck out as a favorite a French Malbec. They have the excellent knowledge and will order what you desire! When the wines came in they called and said my 6 bottles were ready for pickup. I swung by while running errands in the area! Vitus - easily my favorite Hefeweizen and possibly my favorite beer ever. And La Bodega is the only place I know ALWAYS to have it. La Bodega also has so many amazing other beers to try and everything in their store can be bought as single beers which makes sampling especially easy. When I was in there a week or two I found a Belching Beaver brew. On this visit, I couldn't find it. I asked the front desk guy and he promptly looked it up and told me I could find it at their other store up the road. (Which was awesome because I had read that the brew was discontinued at the brewery) Excellent customer service. Friendly staff. All the beers in the store are marked to be bought individually. The best selection of craft beer in Anchorage. Also one of the most unique liquor stores I've ever shopped at. Most liquor stores have a craft beer area where they provide selections for you to build your own 6-pack. Not La Bodega, at La Bodega almost the entire damn store is open to your build your own 6-pack selection. Literally just start grabbing out of cases, and breaking down 6 pack rings because pretty much nothing is off limits. Want to try something new, but don't know if you will like it? Come to La Bodega, and you can buy a single can or bottle of beer! Literally there is no other place like this store. This store has a curated selection of craft beer from across the US, wine, and liquor including an excellent sake selection. You can tell that the staff here puts a lot of time and effort into the selections that they sell. If you are in any way interested in craft beer, or wine, or even liquor this place to go. Anchorage is full of rather plain strip malls and signage that takes some effort to pay attention. In our recent situation, having wine in our hotel room (the nearby Embassy Suites) was a must for Gayle, and I had already noticed that La Bodega was the closest opportunity. That opportunity included running across Benson from the Midtown Mall against off-and-on traffic. But like they say - Happy Wife - Happy Life. La Bodega is a nice store for adult beverages, but maybe with a heavier wine and beer emphasis. The selection was very good both in and out of the refrigerator, and it was clear that the folks here knew their product. If I actually lived here or visited more often, I'd doing a deeper dive here. read more

BEST liquor store in town. I moved to Alaska in May and was slightly worried by extravagant taste in wine would go unfulfilled by standard grocery store wine selections. However I was directed to la bodega and I have visited weekly since. Not only do they have the most unique and amazing selection but prices are reasonable AND staff is knowledgeable. They provide amazing suggestions and direction when you aren't entirely sure of what you're looking for. They have opened my mind to some great vineyards I have since become huge fans of as well as some unique wines I now am required to fly home to my mom when I visit. This location of La Bodega is on Benson in the same strip mall as Wild Scoops, and Indigo Tea Lounge. They are out of the way from where I live and I know coming to La Bodega, I'll likely spend more than I would, at any of my local liquor stores. Despite this, I like to visit when I want something out of the ordinary. La Bodega has a great selection of craft beer, wine, and sake. Their employees are knowledgeable and helpful. Everything is individually priced so you can literally try 1 can or 1 bottle if that's all that speaks to you. You can also mix and match a 6pack I believe. This visit, I picked a Banana Bread beer while my spouse chose a few packs of Denali Spirits spritzer and mule flavors. We weren't surprised La Bodega was out of the blueberry mojito flavor, as it is a very popular item. FYI --La Bodega has strict COVID-19 policies in place. In an effort to control the amount of people inside, they are keeping their doors locked, until they open the door and invite you in. We were standing outside 5-8min before entering. Once inside, masks are required and they are strict about the way masks are worn. Everyone lined up to use La Bodega's hand sanitizer before shopping. La Bodega is a place I used to enjoy taking my time in. This visit, I felt rushed and/or pressure to pick something, anything, seeing a line of people waiting right outside the door. I've been in here twice now and wish I could live here! (Or at least next door) Such an awesome selection of local beers, with the option of purchasing individual cans from packs. With so many crazy craft beers out there, it's great to have the option of buying just one individual beer. The people that work there are super cool and nice, and you can tell that they enjoy helping you make your selections. I love that they curate their liquors as well. I was impressed they had a good selection of scotch, some of my favorites (glenfiddich, tomatin). Nice selection of vodka and sake, haven't checked out their wine section yet. Admittedly, I've been very selective about the places I have visited since things changed drastically in March. I have not eaten at a restaurant since then and have really limited store visits to a minimum. I've been to a few establishments that have done a pretty neutral job conforming to new ways of doing business. I didn't love or hate my visit, changes seemed adequate but maybe not that intuitive, I didn't feel overly uncomfortable, etc. On the other hand, I also have been to a few places that really sucked, and made me question whether I will ever be back. I mention all this to highlight how happy I was visiting La Bodega recently. I think they've adapted superbly. My biggest compliment is that they provide plenty of information to the consumer about the process they have created for safe shopping. There are posters at the door and around the interior, the employees explain things in a friendly and clear manner when you enter, and everything seems to be in place to keep the consumers and employees safe and healthy. This small wine, beer, and liquor store is tucked away in a shopping center off of busy Benson Blvd. I found the beer selection to be excellent (with many local breweries represented) and well priced, the liquor selection to be small but inspired and fairly priced, and the wine section to be meh. They offer a growler bar with a good variety of beers. Growler fills ain't cheap here but most of the beers are from out of state. The staff is very attentive and seem to enjoy providing recommendations to customers who aren't sure what they want. Good music playing in the store as well. read more

They're friendly and knowledgeable about their products so they will gladly help you find what you're looking for and/or offer recommendations. In the back by the beer coolers there's some shelves with staff's photos and favorite drinks which is a nice personal touch. I love the layout of the store. It's clean, organized, and just overall nice to browse. Everything is clearly labeled, complete with details about alcohol level, flavor notes, and state or country of origin. The flavor descriptions are very helpful if you're not familiar with all of the beer, wine, and liquor jargon. They have some beer and wines I haven't seen at any other liquor stores in town so their selection, while relatively small, is unique. This is the best place I have found thus far in Anchorage for good Belgian beers. I really like La Bodega, but for some reason when it was in the old cramped crappy location in the Uni Mall I went much more often. What I like about this place is that you can mix and match the brews and make your own sampler pack. What I like even more about this place is that it's locally owned and has a location for jug filling. I don't know if you can sit and sip, but I like the fact that you can fill your growler at more locations than just the breweries now. Was it Brown Jug Warehouse that started that trend? Shaddout. This last time I came in I wanted to get one of those small bottles of white wine for a cream sauce for dinner and just left with the brew. This place doesn't have those small bottles for sale like Fred's etc... I did feel slightly put out by the chick at one of the registers that looked at me then looked away while I was walking towards the registers, pointedly ignoring me. Knowledgable but pretentious. They act like they are doing you a favor allowing you to shop there. They have adopted what I can only describe as a "nazi-like" attitude about Covid. They do not allow you to simply come in as the door is locked, require masks (even when they did not previously have to), sanitize hands on entry and do not allow you to touch the bottles. There is absolutely no reason to take it to this level. Having a retail store is 100% about making your customers lives easier, and not more difficult, by providing a service or product. In this case, they should be providing both. The customer is NOT always right, but the customer is ALWAYS the customer and their $$ allow you to survive. Lived in Alaska a while and this was my first time into La Bodega. Super gorgeous store with an amazing selection of wine, beer, vodka, whisky.. they even had lemoncello! I went for wine... Every wine store has their method... By type (merlot, cab, ect), by brand (alphabetical), here it's by region and I really loved that! It got me both curious and out of my comfort zone. I left with wines from South Africa, Chili, and New Zealand... As well as with some Californian made Lemoncello that looks so delicious my mouth is watering for it. It's rare to find a store that will go through the hassle and permit that option. Beer selection is awesome; there are lots of ciders as well. One of the best selections in town, definitely. Decent prices, and usually a good amount of sales. Whiskey/scotch selection is decent, nice spread of wines, very good beer selection, including a good rotating draft selection for growlers and such. They even have a decent selection of meads. I love meads. My blood sugar does not, though. The staff is always friendly and helpful, but never pushy or clingy. The brown jug on Old Seward is their only competition close by for volume and selection, and sometimes has slightly lower prices, but La Bodega has a much higher chance of having obscure options in Stock, and I'd rather support the smaller business anyway. Their staff is great for recommendations and helpful knowledge, and have always genuineness admitted when they didn't have answers to my questions, which I always appreciate. I was getting pretty nervous about the poor alcohol selection in Alaska until I found this treasure trove. Hurray for good spread of options from here and the lower 48. read more

While this might be the best stop for good beer in Anchorage, it just isn't as great as everyone makes it out to be. Some things just are as they are; and not only can't, but shouldn't, be explained. And this is where I find myself, attempting to delve into my own sub-conscious. Asking for answers to questions that shouldn't be questioned. Except by those who seek self torment. When did Miller Lite no longer become good enough? Can we get back to that? It's a much more economical alternative to drinking 12 ounces at $3.95 per. It also packs and carries more efficiently than the lopsided bulging situation that occurs when you try and put cans and bottles in the same 6-pack carry sleeve. Have you ever made eye to eye contact with a stranger while awkwardly carrying a non-organic 6-pack under your non dominant arm? It's very uncomfortable. Their eyes plead with you, "Why did you feel the need to violate the structural integrity of that mold of cardboard? Not to mention it's recycled and could implode at any moment! Why not at least carry it in your dominant arm so you can more confidently walk with it to your vehicle?" Why did I, as if there was no more natural action, purchase that vacuum sealed, double walled with space marshmallow between, aluminum growler? Because it will keep my beer cold for it's 2.7 mile trek home? Because it's 2016 and you never know what could happen? Or is it because it incorporates an ultra-clever seal mechanism that utilizes leverage and tension in such a way that the creator should be considered for an esteemed prize within the physics community? It jams my thumbnail in a painful way every time I open it. But it's the kind of pain that forces you to appreciate its genius rather than dwell on the momentary discomfort. All Hale La Bodega! Providers of brew for refined tastes. I love trying new beers and this place is the best spot in town to get individual attention with good advice. La Bodega puts a lot of effort into stocking a huge variety of beer from all over the world. The best thing is that you can mix and match your six pack so you get six different IPA's from six different breweries and make a night of it. The beer of the month club also gives customers a chance to receive some obscure and hard to obtain beers on a monthly basis as a subscription. Wine selection is great too. I could get the same wine at Brown Jug for about the same price but its the highly experienced staff who draw me back to the store. They have tried pretty much everything in stock and almost always give me great recommendations for food pairings or my moods. Other products of note: lambics, ciders, meads, cysers, sake, and although the liquor selection is small, there are some unique products like Rouge's various gins.
