Living in South Philly, everyone knows that Ba Le Bakery is the place to get banh mis. But, as good as they are, sometimes the quality is a little inconsistent. So, I like to check out other places that sell banh mis just to compare. Even though I have ordered from MoonNight several times, I've only ever ordered their banh mis haha. More specifically their lunch special. Their lunch special comes with 1 banh mi + 1 medium drink + 1 pudding for around $15. The restaurant is quite small with very limited seating so I usually prefer to order takeout and I don't prefer to take noodle soups to go. I like the toast on the baguette they use and I think the ratio of toppings to bread is perfect. Food and Drink Ordered: * worth trying - [Chicken Katsu Banh Mi]: I thought that the chicken katsu was a little dry. - [BBQ Chicken Banh Mi*]: The chicken is very juicy and has a good barbecued flavor. It was a pleasant surprise because I originally thought that BBQ chicken was going to mean chicken with BBQ sauce instead of barbequed chicken. - [Green Forest Sunset Tea*]: A subtly sweet raspberry tea with some raspberry pulp. It's very refreshing. - [Egg Pudding*]: I really liked the caramel flavoring of the syrup the pudding was in. It's a bit more firm than most puddings but still very tasty. Would I go back? : It depends. Ba Le Bakery still has a special place in my heart when it comes to banh mis but I do think that MoonNight makes a solid banh mi. Unfortunately, the options are a bit limited and the restaurant is located on a less busy part of East Passyunk Ave, so it's not as convenient to visit. read more

Nice quick little place with excellent service. One of the best Banh Mi I've had ever and definitely the best one on the east coast. The spring rolls were really nice and crispy. One of those satisfying crunch sounds as you bite in. We were curious about the cheese steaks buns. While it doesn't scream cheese steak to me, it is very good. The meat is so tender. We ordered MoonNights for takeout because they had a good variety of Asian food like both ramen, pho, and rice dishes. We wound up getting a Pho Tai Flank, Chicken Pho, Banh Mi, and spicy cucumber. The spicy cucumber (originally $7) was free with an order of over $35 on DoorDash. It had a bit amount of spice to it, but it could have been spicier and less vinegary (very acidic that it hurt). The pho broth was not flavorful, but came hot. It didn't have the pho broth richness to it, just tasted like a hot soup. I liked how intentional they packed the takeout containers. However, the soup and hoisin containers were oily. I think there was an average amount of steak and brisket in mine, with a bit of chewiness. There were two big pieces of grilled white chicken. I like that it came with jalapeños because it tried making up for the broth flavor. I had to add hoisin and sriracha for some flavor. I think for about $17, the pho was enough to fill you up. But for Philly, I'm sure there are better places for pho with similar prices. This place is conveniently located in South Philly though. I'd recommend it if you were craving something specific on the menu, like a big long banh mi or boba. It closes around 9pm, which is not too early, and was timely with the takeout. New Banh Mi and Vietnamese eats shack on East Passyunk! We're so excited to welcome MoonNight onto East Passyunk! Looking forward to trying out the Vietnamese entrees that are on the menu! As for what I ordered when I went, we got 2 of the lunch specials with BBQ Chicken Banh Mi, Lychee Tea, Green Forest Sunset Tea, Egg Pudding, and Taro Pudding. The BBQ Chicken Bahn Mi was phenomenal! The chicken really tasted like it came straight off a barbeque grill. It was such a pleasant taste, and the chicken was quite juicy. The Lychee Tea was good! It's Lychee flavor is a bit subtle but personally I thought it was still enjoyable and good to go alongside a Banh Mi. The Green Forest Sunset Tea was okay, I personally didn't like that the seeds were still in the drink, it gave an unpleasant mouth feel and crunch. It was a bit too sour for my taste. The mango jelly in both drinks though tasted amazing! It reminded me of those mango jelly lychee cups I used to eat in the plastic tubs growing up! The Egg Pudding was hands down the best way to end this meal! The flavors were so complex and tasted amazing. There's a bit of a caramelized taste from the liquid and a light coffee taste as well. The Egg Pudding itself wasn't overly sweet and tasted like a very solid Egg Pudding. The Taro Pudding tasted good. Very light Taro taste, but more like a powdered Taro taste. I'm not a huge fan of Taro, so I feel like I can't really comment on the quality of the Taro taste, but as someone who isn't a fan of Taro it tasted good. I'd definitely come back here again to try out the other items on their menu, or honestly just to grab another lunch special! read more

"Yummy" is the word that best describes this place, if you're asking my 2 year old. I stoped by MoonNight on a Friday evening with the wife and kids. When we arrived around 5, the place was empty. We walked right up to the counter and ordered some food. I got the brisket pho, my wife got ramen and we got some appetizers for the kids. They had the cheesesteak bao and spring rolls. We waited at our table for about 20 min. In that time, a bunch of people came in to pick up food and another couple came to dine in. When our food arrived, it was hot, had nice sized portions and looked really yummy. The kids snacked on the appetizers while my wife and I shared some of our pho & ramen with them. Everything was absolutely delicious. The pho was amazing, with a large amount of meat, a huge handful of noodles and super flavorful broth. As my 2 year old was eating his food, I continually served him some soup from my spoon. Every mouthful he ate, ended in him saying "yummy," and when you have the approval of a picky toddler, you've won the meal. After the meal we got a some dessert to try. We had a taro bubble tea, a chocolate macaron and a mung bean cake. We all loved all of our selections. Everything was fresh and "yummy!" Would I come back here? In a heartbeat! You should to! My friend and I got MoonNight takeout for a casual dinner and enjoyed it! We both got a Seitan Vegetarian Banh Mi which came with cucumber, pickled radish, mayo, jalapeno, and cilantro. Food was bad! My money was wasted here. The restaurant is super small and I think it was the owner, but he was eating loud in front of my table and it was just uncomfortable. The seats and table were also dirty. The toilet was clogged. Also, I'm assuming he's the owner but he was just staring at his staff while he was eating, which I thought was creepy. read more

This unassuming little place is actually quite fantastic. The young woman, who is usually working at the counter, could not be more friendly and welcoming. I've tried quite a few things on their menu and have enjoyed everything. The shrimp summer roll is absolutely delicious !!! The Banh Mi are obviously freshly made and the bread is crispy and fresh. I've tried this place twice now and was disappointed both times as I need a good solid lunch spot near me. The first time I had a BBQ pork banh mi, the bread was great but the meat had a strange flavor I couldn't quite put my finger on that was honestly pretty off putting and I didn't finish the sandwich. The Boba tea was delicious though. Just tried again for a second time, got the lunch special (Banh Mi, Vietnamese iced coffee, egg pudding). Wasn't thrilled with the price for lunch ($20 after tax and tip) when I can get an amazing Italian hoagie across the street from Mancuso's with a drink for $10. The coffee was delicious, but the sandwich once again disappointed. This time I tried the BBQ chicken and I just couldn't finish it the flavor on the meat was off putting in a strange way and I didn't finish the sandwich. I'm typing this out a few hours later and have pretty bad heartburn from it. The egg pudding was honestly baffling. It was served in a to go cup for like ketchup so a very small portion, had a strange watery sauce around the pudding itself. There was just no flavor there and just slurping wet firm flavorless pudding was gross. Overall hard to recommend when there's at least 3 or 4 other great lunch spots at a much lower price point within walking distance, but good drinks though and the other desserts look delicious but I have not tried. read more

Can't speak for the meat options, but the fruit teas and veggie options here are good! I've had the seitan banh mi and the veggie pho. I really enjoyed the banh mi, but the seitan could be a little bit more seasoned, as it relied on the fixings (jalapeño, cilantro, vegan mayo, etc.) for a lot of its flavor. I would still get it again when I'm in the area though. The veggie pho was also good! The broth is a tomato base. While it can't taste exactly like a beef broth, it's delicious in its own right. The noodles were cooked well and again the fixings were on point. The only comment for the pho is I wish it came with sriracha and a lime wedge (it does come with hoisin). Though I got it for take out so perhaps things are different with dine in. Overall, 4.5/5, would go again! read more
