Disgusting Kitchen Standards & An Absolute Joke of a "Discount" Let me start by saying our waitress was awesome. She was attentive, polite, and this 1-star review has absolutely nothing to do with her. This is entirely on management and the kitchen staff. We came in as a party of four and ordered appetizers. As soon as they hit the table, we pulled out two long hairs--one in each appetizer--right in front of our waitress. She was visibly startled and asked what she could do. Trying to be understanding guests, we told her not to worry, and she apologized and said she'd speak to the Back of House. When the main courses arrived, the food was okay, though it seriously lacked flavor and desperately needed salt. But the real insult came when the bill arrived. Since we had actual hair served in our food, we politely asked our waitress if a discount could be applied. She apologized, mentioned she hadn't been sure how to handle it initially, and went to speak to the manager. After a long wait, she came back with a "discounted" bill. The original total was $179 and change. The manager's grand gesture of a discount brought it down to $173 and change. But here is the absolute kicker: because we paid with a card, they tacked on debit card fees that brought the final total right back up to $179. Where the hell is the actual discount? In this day and age, almost no one carries cash. Sneaking in extra card fees to completely wipe out a "complimentary" discount for serving us hair is cheap, manipulative, and terrible business. If you're going to charge card fees, embed them in the food prices like a reputable establishment. Between whoever is cooking in the back without a hairnet and a management team that thinks a net-zero "discount" fixes serving unsanitary food, we will absolutely never be back. Step up your hygiene and your management standards. read more

There are plenty of seating options on the patio where they also have opened bar area. The restaurant can accommodate many guests inside too. Food and drinks: Good selection of seafood dishes. I opted for wild caught salmon. The fish was cooked and seasoned well. We also chose sandwich with crab which was equally tasty. They offer great variety of cocktails. We arrived after a different restaurant had an over 3 hour wait. They sat us in an outdoor covered patio area. It was cute & quaint. The table next to us then told us they already ordered their food & drink yet neither came. We started not feeling great until our server came and assured us she would not forget our table. Location is right on the water. Sit outside if you can for the great view. They have funny stools. They had a fun drink menu. Dog friendly patio. There were a few local cats hanging around asking for food. They didn't mess with us or our dog. Kept seagulls away. Very chill place. Including the service. lol. This was an amazing experience. The service was spot on , recommended off the menu items which were off the chart ! I had calamari , crab cakes ( best this Cajun has had outside of Louisiana) We ( My niece & I ) had burgers I had black & blue OMG niece had the Amy burger simply perfect moist perfect medium cook. Love this place. Looking for a fun place to go eat, drink and check out the sea this is your place. The food is yummy, the beer is always cold, it's huge so you can almost always get a place to sit and the mixed drinks are great. I've haven't yet visited when there is live music but I've heard it can be quite a party. Can't wait to try that out. We ordered the fried flounder sandwich, the blackened redfish and a grilled redfish and everything we ate was amazing. Highly recommend the catch of the day. Will definitely be back soon. read more

I sure learned my lesson here to really believe the Yelp reviews...but figuring everyone deserves a chance we stopped by Moondog to form our own opinions. They were, unfortunately, not good. As mentioned, service was s-l-o-w. Being at the beach, this isn't typically an issue as you are there for the ambiance and a cold drink right? That is, unless the cold drink takes 15 minutes to arrive and...isn't cold. We also asked our server what was in the Texas Mule that makes it "Texas" and he replied "I actually have no idea." Dear reader, it is a regular mule with Tito's vodka. Still holding onto hope, we placed our orders and wondered if we would be eating it for lunch, or dinner by the time it showed up. The food arrived and we dove in, starving enough to eat (almost) anything. Off the bat, the loaded baked potato which I was assured came with sour cream and butter was lacking on both. Thus, dry, I asked our server for some condiments twice before he brought them out and I was nearly done. The ketchup he promised never arrived. The sandwich was ok, but nothing to write home about, as was the soft shell crab. For the amount of time it took to come out, I was so hoping for some intense elbow grease homemade dishes - but they were unfortunately very obviously either pre-prepared and frozen items and things that took nearly zero effort to throw together. A pretty big dissapointment compared to all the other places I have tried in Rockport, which is a shame because the location and environment are the kind that would make you want to hang around for a few hours (as long as it was by choice). read more

Stray cats, terrible service, and a mandatory tip they wouldn't honor I had high hopes for Moondog Seaside Eatery, based on Google Maps (I know, my bad!), but this was one of the worst dining experiences I've had. Health and safety: Several stray cats were freely roaming in and around the dining tables and eating leftovers during active food service. This isn't a charming beach-town quirk -- it's a violation of basic food safety standards. Animals (aside from service animals or leashed dogs in designated outdoor patio areas) aren't permitted in food establishments under Texas health code, for good reason. Service: We waited for 80 minutes for our food (nothing like a Michelin style masterpiece, but simple fish and chips and mac and cheese they typically serve). When it finally arrived, part of our order was missing. The waiter initially blamed us for the mistake -- until she checked her own notes and saw we'd ordered correctly all along. No apology, just moved on. Food: Honestly not good, and not worth the wait or the price regardlesss of everything else that went wrong. The mandatory tip: Our party was 6+, so a 20% tip was automatically added -- no matter how bad the service was. When we asked about removing or reducing it given the hour-long wait and order mix-up, we were told no. A manager (or someone who represented themselves as one) said it's actually up to the individual server whether to enforce the 20%, despite it being printed on the menu as a flat policy. So apparently the "mandatory" tip is mandatory unless your server feels like waiving it -- which makes no sense and felt like a bait-and-switch. Between the animals roaming the dining room, the service issues, and a tip policy that isn't actually enforced the way it's advertised, I can't recommend this place. read more

Finally made it to Moondogs and it did NOT disappoint. The food was fantastic across the board. The boiled shrimp were perfectly cooked--tender, flavorful, and not overdone at all (which is rare). The shrimp quesadillas were also a hit, with the perfect balance of shrimp to cheese so every bite actually had both. And the crawfish queso? Easily some of the best I've had--rich, flavorful, and hard to stop eating. Definitely a spot I'll be coming back to. Server was friendly and attentive. read more

We found this place to be quite enjoyable. We were looking for a place where we could eat and look out at the water. We were seated pretty quickly. The eating area was nice. The decorations were what you would expect at such a place, fishing/dock type decor. The food was pretty good and decently tasty. None of it will win a contest but because of the whole package, we were more than pleased and would definitely return. We had a little adventure that it started raining during our meal, causing all outside diners to become inside diners and quite quickly. Seated pretty quickly, tried to order the oysters on the half shell was told by the waitress that the waters to still to warm for them and they were not serving them. Huh? First time I heard that down here. Tried to order the gumbo and was told they didn't not have that either, but was told the brisket soup was good which it was. Had the shrimp tacos and they were pretty good size and filled me up. This place seems to be hit or miss looking at the reviews. So if you want to roll the dice, well give it a try. We sat and watched the waiter talking with the bar tender and not bringing our drinks. After another ten minutes of this we left and told the waitress to cancel our order. We come to the coast yearly for Labor Day, and stumbled upon moondog last year. The grilled shrimp plate is the absolute best tasting shrimp I've ever had. My husband got the catch of the day, grouper, and cleaned his plate. On top of everything, they had a green apple White Claw, which I've never seen before and was a really fun surprise. Our server, Sheila, was wonderful and had great insight on the menu. Not the mention sitting on the covered porch on a beautiful coastal day. Warm June evening but the steady breeze on the covered patio made it pleasant. We did not order any drinks from the bar, stayed with iced tea and soft drinks. Catch of the day was grouper, I asked for it blackened with asparagus. Two in our group had the very fresh grilled jumbo shrimp; another had chicken nachos.
