This place is so stinking cute! We went here for Father's Day unexpectedly because the restaurant we drive to town for lost power due to lightning. I'm sad for them but happy to have gone here instead. Eclectic charm is the best way to describe the place. The staff were friendly and greeted us and the service was great throughout our visit. We went for Sunday brunch which had such a fun menu. I wanted to try the potatoes with duck fat which didn't come with my meal but they offered substitutes before I even asked! I was part of a group of five and we all got very different main meals. The chef and/or owner? brought our starters which was fried green tomatoes that were the star of the meal. Actually, I think it was the blue cheese and bacon that did it. The combination of tangy, smoky, tart, and creamy crunch was perfect. Plus, the acid from the green tomatoes cut through the ranch. For my main I had the fried oysters with the above mentioned duck fat potatoes. Others had eggs Benedict, omelettes, and fried shrimp. There were zero complaints. If I could score less I would. This establishment claims to be a tiki lounge ( which is a bar)/slash restaurant. On April 18th 2026 around 5/6pm, myself and my boyfriend entered Cheryl's- we were greeted by a Caucasian woman . Who was VERY rude. We Asked if we could sit at the bar, she immediately asked if we were going to eat. I said "maybe just a drink" (wasn't sure on the menu at that point- would need to look at the menu while I have a "tiki" drink was my plan ). We then were asked to leave (very rudely) because she claimed we can't get service unless we are eating too. Verbatim she said " this is a restaurant not a bar". I have never been treated with such prejudice rude behavior as she looked me over and made that statement. I didn't even feel the need to explain that I talked my boyfriend into taking me there to have a Tiki drink at Cheryl's TIKI lounge before we decided on where to eat dinner. We were considering eating at Cheryl's once looking at the menu - at least an appetizer with our drink. But since we were greeted with such rudeness and prejudice- I just said okay and walked out. It's quite possible if you are brown in ethnicity, that you will get treated bad at Cheryl's. On first impression- it's small and looks dirty. Staff are rude. Bad decor and it's not a tiki lounge. I suggest they change the name. I will be sharing this on social media as well. So we ended up going to Moondog for dinner.. much better place and very friendly staff and the food was yummy. read more

Food good. Wine list had a decent selection of Napa wines at a reasonable markup. They fixed our one problem. Nice environment -- like a homey pub that makes real ("fine") food. I liked the music. They stayed open late and didn't rush us out. A real restaurant. And the best red meat I had in a Texas. Five stars. A happy place. Visiting from Galveston. Saw reviews on Yelp and wanted to try them out. Came in for brunch August 16, 2020 at 11am with 2 locals (who had never been here before either) Today, Cheryl has friend volunteers helping her because she has no staff. She had a lawyer and an accountant serving us!!! (They did great) We all had eggs benedict...2 classics and 1 fried oyster...we cleaned our plates. We all had mimosas and bloody Mary's...tasty SUPPORT LOCAL SMALL BUSINESS COVID practices in place with staff (except the owner, Cheryl didn't wear a mask...oops!) They even had one homemade sanitizer bottle on the table that you could keep. read more

Very interesting that the only 5 stars for this establishment are 'patrons' who have very, very few reviews. The word is that Cheryl asks friends to post favorable reviews to boost Yelp ratings, and it would appear to be true based on our experience. The service last week was borderline insulting, unless you were 'in-the-know'. We were greeted with lackluster enthusiasm. Sat quickly but received not much attention following. When we did get attention, we asked several menu related questions. Our server was interrupted and left. Decided to take our hard earned money elsewhere. read more

We just celebrated our 38th wedding anniversary at Cheryl's By the Bay. I was overwhelmed with the love and joy we felt when we entered the restaurant. Cheryl personally made sure the flowers my husband had ordered were on the table waiting for us along with champagne. Cheryl, Kendra and Ernie made our night magical. Ok let me preface this review by the experience I had within I visited with my partner. We were greeted promptly and sat at a very nice table. The staff was extremely nice and the food was delicious. Their French omelette is fantastic as are the potatoes fried in duck fat. My partner had the French toast that was also really good. So my experience here was perfect and based on that alone would give it 5 stars. Would I go back...well the answer is no. Based not only reviews I've read on Yelp but also after discussions with other local business people, I can't support a business that discriminates in any fashion. Turning people away because they want to wear a mask is so wrong especially when you read that many of those people had conditions where Covid could really put them at risk. I suppose a business has a right to refuse service to anyone, bust we also have voices to protest. read more

The shrimp and grits were flawless! We came here because we wanted something different. In the three years we've been together, we haunt the usual places if I'm not cooking. I am so glad we happened to go by. I read the reviews prior and the one-star folks made me lol. Obviously she doesn't need your good reviews because she has a loyal local following. Go in and behave and you'll be treated well. She was so nice to us, as was our lovely server. However, we did not enter acting pretentious and like we should be treated better than everyone else. If you are a party of 2-4 on a Thursday, Cheryl's will be a fantastic and memorable experience you will savor. When you bring back 20 of your friends on Saturday, you will second guess your decision. Cheryl's has a unique menu and ambiance... no one will mistake it for a chain or any other restaurant. I love the appetizer menu. Chorizo cheese things are pan-fried chorizo quesadillas and the bacon wrapped dates in a white sauce over rice is something angels eat. I guarantee you will find a wide variety of dishes you have never seen at any other restaurant. It's just not a place to take a crowd... on a weekend. It's plenty spacious, but it's run with minimum staff. Often times it's just Cheryl herself and the chef. Sometimes she has one or maybe two additional staff. The sign above the front door warns you before you even walk in. Heed it. It's her truth. If you do go with your sig other on a Wednesday or Thursday, I'll guarantee it's one of the most memorable restaurant experiences anywhere. read more

Hate to leave a bad review for a small business but our experience was that bad. My husband and I stopped in based off the recommendation of a local. We wished we would have read the yelp reviews first, all the 1 star reviews are true. We stood awkwardly waiting to be acknowledged for a table for quite some time, followed by terrible service. Preference and service is catered to locals. Locals who sat next to us got their food before us although we ordered about 10 minutes before them. The food is mediocre at best. Good food and nothing beyond that. Great hostess and server. Unfortunately, the spinich side dish was gritty. We let the server know so the kitchen was aware but she opted to escalate it. I'm guessing the person in charge was the one who came to our table and asked "So, what seems to be the problem?" while staring into the distance. So we explained to her that there was grit in the spinach--nothing more nothing less. Her response to this was that we should let her know how to avoid the problem and so she could also learn for her benefit, while still not making eye contact. She then proceeded to tell us that "it was probably because the spinach has....." she paused and didn't finish her sentence. Then she proceeded to offer a substitute (which we appreciated but it wasn't necessary like we'd let her and the server know already). Two takeaways: the kitchen staff may not be as careful as one expected to prep and whomever this person was didn't care. But, back to the food. The burger was good. The cheesy grits with shrimp mediocre. Not a bad food experience but certainly not worth of all the praise this restaurant gets. read more
