We have been passing this place for a few years and finally decided to stop in for a bite. So glad we did. The wife had the Aransas Bay club and I had one of the specials which was 3 redfish tacos. Although the wait for my food was long (an hour or more), it was during the dinner rush after all, but the food was very reasonably priced and my Holiday melt or whatever it was called was certainly worth the wait. The fries were made just how I like them and the waitress was very polite. The fish made out of bottle caps on the walls are a nice touch too. We came to Rockport on vacation and decided to try Pop's after a recommendation from our realtor. She and her husband raved about Pop's burgers and who doesn't love a good burger? Pop's Tavern and Cafe is much too classy a name for this place. Took nearly 2 hours to get in and out of this non-busy "establishment".Couldn't get a second beer or a glass of water if we were standing there on fire. Owner's mother is an old ogress bar fly that chastises patrons for approaching the bar to request a drink after they've patiently waited nearly an hour. I suppose this is because serving others would mean a delay in filling her glass of wine. Watched a family seated at the table next to us get up and walk out as they waited for their drinks for nearly 30 mins. Perhaps the key to good service at this place is to be a local. Small town bar and grill, if you can't handle cigarette smoke you should probably order ahead and get To-go, b it worth it. Food was kick azz, southern staples done right. To make the place a 5 star you have to have good staff, and let me tell you, this Karen chick at the bar was also kick azz. My only regret is only tipping 30%, she deserved more. So if you do read this and stop in there, give her an extra couple dollars for me please. I would myself but i live many hours away. I was with my fiancé in Rockport, TX for the weekend of July 4th. We found a restaurant that had decent reviews, so we decided to give it a try. We walked inside to what appeared to be a bar, with some tables to eat at. I was good with this because I did need a cold beer. We sat down in anticipation of a waitress to serve us some cold water and cold beer. Like the ketchup commercial we waited, and waited, and waited some more. Finally, a waitress showed up to take our drink order. After ordering two beers we waited again for them to show up. Once the beers showed up, it was off to the races for the waitress, and we did not see her for some time. She finally arrived back to take our order. By the time our order had arrived, we had already watched one couple wait 15 minutes at a table and leave because of no service. Now I will say the food was good, not great, but good. We sat and ate with empty beers and no water. I had the jalapeno burger with fresh Jalapenos. I was at the end of my burger and was pretty parched. I took a bite, and the bread became stuck in my throat, and I could not drink anything to get it down. My fiancé got up and went to the bar for some water. She stood and waited, and finally attempted to get the attention of our waitress, with no luck. This lady sitting at the bar looked up at my fiancé and stated, "why don't you give them a break, they are busy you know". My sweetheart of a fiancé kindly told her that we have been patient, and that we have waited almost twenty minutes for our waitress to show up, and that I was almost choking over not having any liquids to wash my burger down. This lady rudely replied in a loud obnoxious manner, "He's choking". The lady did get up and get us a glass of water. We then continued to wait for the ticket. Another waitress, which was very nice explained to us that the waitress we had just started that night. Well to me that is not an excuse, it's a management issue. I also told her that I did not appreciate how the older lady who obviously had her hydration covered with her glasses of wine in front of her treated my fiancé. The waitress advised me that this was the owner's mother and continued to apologize for her actions. I paid the bill and we left. Now to be fair, the food was pretty good. The service was not. The mother of the owner should keep her mouth shut and only comment when she actually knows the totality of the circumstances. If the mother knew that we have been patiently waiting for this waitress instead of leaving this establishment for the many more that are in the area, she probably would have not said what she did. This was not a good experience at this restaurant, which was not crowded at all. If you don't mind waiting an hour or so for your food and drinks, then go for it! Just watch out for the landshark at the bar!!! read more

Went to Pop's for lunch on a Sunday. We almost left due to the smoking, but we were able to move to the back where it wasn't as noticeable. Had a new waitress who was awesome! Cold beer, really really good burgers and fresh hot onion rings! Just what we were looking for! We also had a starter of fried calamari that was hot and tasty with fresh hot marinara. Liked the general atmosphere, but no taps.. service was just so-so. My "chicken fried fish fillet" was a paper thin catfish.. identical to the "fried catfish basket" my friend got. Only reason it got two stars is because my other friends burger was pretty good. So.. if you want a burger and a bottle of beer, good stop. And if they ask... "Do you want salt"... I would say no. Excellent bar food! Found this gem last year and come here at least once a week. Oysters, when in season, are the best in town, burgers are great and Philly cheese is wonderful! I'm not sure what the Hayden dude's problem is but it's obvious he's one of those people who hate the world. About the ONLY thing he said that was right is that Pop's does allow smoking so yes, sometimes it does get smoky but they roll up the doors and put the fans on. They have super good burgers. I've been here at least 10 times and have never had a bad experience. My son loves their catfish basket and my daughter loves the curly fries. They have straight fries too. The onion rings are home made and delicious. They have bottle beer and smoking is still allowed inside. During the day it's kid friendly. We go with our 6 and 8 year old. It's a nice hidden gem on Sundays when most Rockport Restaurants are closed. read more

What a Disaster! Travis' review is entirely accurate. Since there is no place to grab lunch for the drive back from Rockport, we decided to grab a couple of burgers for the road. In order to expedite the process, I paid for the order while they were "cooking it". $18.50, and gave her $20... OK fine. After 20 minutes of choking from the smoke, I. Asked about the status of the order. She said that it had not even been started, and it would be another 10-15 minutes. We decided that the DQ in Tivoli would be better than this insanity, and tried to cancel the order. Obviously, she only gave me the $18.50 back. They do allow smoking inside, which I know is not everyone's cup of tea, but it's Rockport so you can't really be too choosy with the places you go. My boyfriend and I went a few weeks ago on a really busy evening and had Ross as our server/bartender. He never missed a beat; always making sure to keep the beer and food coming. He really made it a fun night out for us. The only reason I'm taking a star off is just because the chair I had to sit in originally had some obvious sweat stains and that was just gross! I was very glad with Pop's, and the family enjoyed it as well. They waiter was alone, but he was funny and very kind. The service was great especially with just one server. They get food and drinks out very quick, and all of the food was also cooked to perfection. I had the Lamar Burger with Onion Rings, and they were very good. I can say I used to eat here a lot when I was younger and the burgers are a must. I recommend this to others that are visiting in the area. #1 Its a local place #2 smoking is allowed I used to live down the street from Pop's and Sunday through Thursday it's a place that the local's call home. It's a great place to watch the game. The jukebox plays loud, the pool tables are always ready. During the warmer months the place is opened up to let the breeze in. The food is good especially with a cold beer. read more
