Chicago Magazine's February 2013 issue left me wondering who they paid to review the Top Ten Best Places to Grub. A word of advice: don't listen to this guy (girl?)!! Clearly the writer points out that the business is "two steps above a hole in the wall;" but what I don't understand is whether or not there is something I might be missing in my perception of this popular label for downtrodden bars and/or pubs.
When someone uses the expression "hole in the wall," it usually comes across as an affectionate way of describing a place that has either drinks or food which stand separate from the service or the atmosphere. This means that the food or drinks are excellent. Moodys has terrible service and terrible food. One thing about this place: it is hardly a hole in the wall. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with open fireplaces. There is plenty of seating, and the overall appearance of the restaurant is very clean and cozy. I even remember one of my friends taking me to this beer garden over the summer. Chicago Magazine was right. Paired with the way they use the lighting, the tree-lined patio definitely fools any urban cowboy into thinking that they are in the middle of a forest, and happened upon Peter Pan's secret rainbow gathering.
I didn't really browse yelp reviews with a fine-toothed comb, but I did glance at a few things. I saw the ratings and that someone liked their onion rings. I even saw that their burgers were something to try. I ordered both.
Hello! Worst food ever! It's not that if you eat anything from here, that you feel it will make you sick. It's more like I would rather sneak into a high school that serves hot lunches, and grub down. I'd get the same quality of food; but I'd feel pretty frigging awesome if I could actually pass as a high school student. The bun on my hamburger was borderline stale, and definitely dry. If the meat was any good at all, there was so much bun that I could barely taste the meat. My burger came with fries, which I like to dip in ranch. The fries tasted like they were cut from fresh potatoes, but absolutely drowned in grease, and soggy on the inside. It made me regret cheating on my diet. Whatever vendor they use for ranch dressing, it almost made me puke. It was too thick and sour. I would have been happier dipping my fries into blue cheese dressing.
Yelpers were definitely talking about the onion rings. They proclaimed that they were the best in Chicago. Really? Where else have these people ate that they have to compare it to? Gross! The breading was too thick and crunchy. It was like eating crab legs along with the outer shell. The breading had absolutely no flavor at all. It even seemed a little over cooked. I couldn't tell if it was just the style of breading, or if it was left in the fryer too long. It was probably both.
Last, the service was sub par. Although our waitress was very sweet, she was overwhelmed once the pub got busy. I don't think that was her fault. I do believe her ability as a server fell off for me when we first placed our order. People had yet to arrive and fill the seats. I ordered onion rings with my dinner and she forgot to place the order with the cook. I recognize that she is probably a student and working part time. Still, I did not receive my food and there was no motion to discount my bill in any way. I wasn't rude to her; and I didn't ask for a discount either. I also blame the manager of Moodys. Once the place got busy, I saw no other servers come in to help her cover the tables. I realize we are a failing economy, but as a consumer, Mr. Moodys, I'm watching you! I would never work for you either. Shame on you for being a slave driver. I have been in her shoes.
I'd like to be able to close my review with something positive, which would make everyone want to check this place out for the atmosphere alone. Unfortunately, their beer selection is also limited. Without fries, burger, or onion rings, what's left to snack on while you drink and run your mouth with friends? Better yet, what are you going to drink? I had a couple glasses of Pinto Grigio. It was decent, but at a pub, I'm really looking for a tall glass of bourgeoisie frothenslosh! Go once, but I don't think you'll bother to come back. read more
