I have been to Monuts several times and love the local feel of dining there. There aren't that many service interactions as a lot of it is serve yourself after you order at the counter. This most recent visit I was disappointed compared to past visits due to the extended wait time for our food even though it wasn't as busy as I've seen it in the past. The bagel sandwich I ordered also was quite small for the price point and the bagels were over toasted to the point it was unpleasant to eat. I love Monuts overall but can see it has some inconsistencies over across different visits.

We had not been here in a long time since whenever we're nearby the place is packed. Finally stopped in on a Saturday in March when it was not mobbed (maybe spring break at Duke?). We've gotten donuts and coffee in the past but this time got a quiche with a side salad and a cheesy kale scone. Both were delicious. It's fast casual so you order at the counter and they bring out your food. We also like that they pay good wages and have a little section with pantry items and merch. This has become a Durham institution and we wish them continued success.

    Turkish eggs and avocado sandwich

Turkish avocado eggs sandwich always slaps, but also got the lemon ginger curd pie and it was delish. The puff pastry crust was a little weird but the filling was so good that I didn't even mind! This place gets packed so I would recommend either ordering ahead or expecting a wait. Service is friendly and this is a no tip establishment. Ambiance is very cute!

Monuts is perfect for coffee, sweets, and lunch! I stopped here for an afternoon and sat outside on the picnic tables. The outdoor area is gorgeous and perfect to study or catch up with friends. The food and drinks were great! The staff was helpful and friendly. I was just visiting Durham but could definitely see myself coming here regularly if I was a local. Every person I met in Durham recommended Monuts and it did not disappoint!

Apple cider and chocolate peppermint donuts

We picked up donuts for breakfast for my daughter's birthday. I appreciate that they open at 7 so that we could get them before school. I loved the seasonal flavors of apple cider and chocolate peppermint. The donuts are the right balance of crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The biscuit sandwich took some time to get ready, but the biscuit was worth it - delicious and flaky. The seasonal coffees of eggnog and Christmas tree lattes were also tasty.

Omg what an amazing eggnog donut! Serious yums!! I thoroughly enjoyed all of my food as well as the chill atmosphere. The cashier took the extra step to ask if I wanted my focaccia heated, what a sweetie!

If you're in need of a sweet treat this place has got you covered! They've got donuts, muffins, cookies and even breakfast sandwiches. I'd recommend getting here 15-20min before they open because the line gets LONG!! There's plenty of seating inside but parking is definitely sparse so come early :).

I never would have guessed that I'd have the best bagel of my life during a spontaneous lunch trip but that is indeed what happened today at Monuts. There were a lot of menu options that sounded good but I couldn't decide what to get / panicked and ended up ordered a plain bagel with egg whites but it was A M A Z I N G!! The bagel had perfect taste and texture, I can only imagine how good their other varieties are. Bonus points for having delicious vegan cookies, almond milk, lots of indoor and outdoor seating, and the sweetest employees ever!! Already looking forward to coming back here.

Ordered donuts and the breakfast burrito and everything was absolutely amazing! I'm super picky about breakfast burritos and they nailed it! Didn't get a picture of it because I devoured it super quickly since it was so good lol.

I was very pleased with Monuts. Based on the name, for a long time had I assumed they served donuts. But they don't! (or at least not much). On a beautiful May morning the indoors was pretty packed but I saw signs about how to get to their outdoor garden (which is just around from the front door). I said I'll do that (and they text you to come pick up your order inside). Well the many picnic benches were a little damp, but it was quite lovely! And so was my interesting spicy egg bagel sandwich.

Monuts is an absolute gem in Old West Durham! The cafe is a perfect destination for breakfast, brunch, and lunch; and you can feel good supporting a local business that pays their employees a living wage! The food at Monuts is incredible with a focus on delicious baked goods, inventive sandwiches, and fantastic coffee drinks. Their menu changes on a seasonal and sometimes weekly basis, so it's easy to keep coming back to see what their current offerings are. In addition to sandwiches, you can also enjoy lunch items such as soup, salads, and quiche! Everything is made from scratch, in-house, no pre-made mixes here. if you're visiting on the weekend, come early and be prepared for the crowd, this place gets packed!

Received a dozen donuts as a gift at work and WOW they were delicious. The variability in flavors is truly unique and the donuts taste fresh.

    Ask the Community - Monuts

Are they open for dine in right now?

Not yet, you can order and wait inside for your food but the tables have messages of no seating until they feel it's safe enough.

    Do they have wifi?

    Yes

What kind of vegan baked goods items are offered?

They recently started having at least one vegan baked item Yesterday I had a delicious vegan chocolate chip cookie. Probably the best in town.

    Any vegan donuts yet?

I hope they can work on some soon! I had one that they made for the Bull City Vegan Challenge one year and it needed a lot of improvements.

    Can you study here?

It can get pretty loud in there during peak hours. If you can catch the place when it's not too busy I'd say it would be a nice place to sit and study.

I appreciate that they have an entire…read moresandwich designed as vegan (rather than simply a "vegan" version that removes cheese or uses fake meat). I've gotten three of their vegan bagel options, the vegan Kimchi Lox, the Lebanese Spicy Tofu, and the Vegan Bahn Mi. I think that the food isn't exceptional, but it's filling & again, they have some well done vegan options. The Lebanese Spicy Tofu was definitely the best of the three (but a big mess, beware!). The Vegan Bahn Mi (pictured) was good, but maybe a bit underseasoned. The vegan Kimchi Lox is of course also quite messy, but of course doesn't have any protein on it. In our experience, it's best to just order online, and then go pick it up at the time (due to the wait time). We will often get coffee at Liturgy or Foster, and then just walk over when it's time. It's inside Durham Food Hall, which is, unfortunately, always quite loud, but there are tables outside and a park nearby you can sit at if you'd prefer. Overall, one of the better vegan options in the food hall.

I got the chicken katsu: the chicken and the Togarashi sesame bagel itself were great; I think the sauce could be less sweet and more spicy. The hall seemed busy but my food was ready by the time I finished ordering a drink from another vendor. Very convenient spot with AC, seating, free wifi, and clean bathrooms to fuel up before my hike. If I ever come back to North Carolina, this is definitely on my list to revisit.

I ordered food from one vendor then a drink from another, then my food was ready to be picked up and my drink right after that. If I ever end up in North Carolina again, I'll likely be back--pretty much every vendor had food I wanted to try, and there's ample seating with free wifi and water. Love the zine vending machine, I didn't have time to visit a museum and this is such a cool way for tourists to learn about the area! Right around the corner there's a big hill park thing with a skate ramp, playground, and a little free library where I grabbed a book from a favorite series of mine! Only annoying thing is that you have to pay for parking, but that seems to be the situation for this whole area.

However this last visit we chose to eat from Ex-Voto and ordered the Carnitas Crunchwrap. It was totally delicious, worth the price ( it was huge) and my husband enjoyed his Carnitas Burrito that was equally good. However, in looking at the receipt after getting home, we noticed an added 10% living wage service charge that we did not notice at the restaurant, and no signage about this that we could see. We always tip well and thus left a tip of 25%, so in all, they received an extra 35%. It would be good to be informed about this up front, or better yet, that they are paid more to not need that extra charge. If we had been told, we may have adjusted our tip accordingly. Just a heads up to others, but definitely eat there!

We noted that servers were of a different caliber than in the past. Hopefully just the shift that we visited a Friday morning. Coffee good, not stellar. Bottom line of fun place to be and eat or enjoy socializing. Just the service and food did not keep up at least for this visit.
