I hired Montclair Movers to move us out of our one bedroom apartment to a single family home about 15 minutes away. After providing Elijah with a list of our furniture, I was given a really reasonable estimate and was told the job would take three hours, with an hour (the minimum) for travel. We awarded them the job because of that, and because these were allegedly local movers. The day of the move, our crew arrived right on time, and up until that point, our conversations with Elijah had been seamless -- why I'm giving two stars instead of one. However, when they arrived, they told me the job would definitely be at least two hours over the estimate, so an additional ~$325. When I argued that we had an hour for travel time, and that that should cover a portion of the overage, I was told that the crew had been dispatched all the way from Brooklyn and that the travel charge was also covering their travel to our apartment -- which didn't make any sense, seeing as the company is based in Montclair, and I was moving out of Bloomfield. I was annoyed, and in a bind, because I obviously had no other option than to pay them the overages. To their credit, the crew worked as quickly as they could on a very hot day. And, when the job was over (it ended up taking about 5 hours total, including the travel from the apartment to our home) we tipped all three members of the crew $40 a piece. The head guy then asked my husband if he could "pitch in a little more" because it was a big job. Embarrassed, annoyed, and out of cash -- seeing as the job had already gone over budget -- my mother in law gave them an extra $10 a piece. They were clearly still unhappy, stormed off, and after they left, we realized they had thrown piles of garbage from the move (packing tape, plastic covers, etc.) all over our new front lawn, empty water bottles we had given them, and other cans and trash from inside their truck. I immediately called Eli to complain, who apologized profusely for their behavior and said he would be firing the crew. I said I wanted to be reimbursed for tipping them at all, and Eli told me that while he "couldn't do that" he would send me a $50 Visa gift card. Surprise surprise, we never got it. I highly recommend you use a different moving company, even if the job is quoted more up front, because arguing about estimate costs and dealing with bad attitudes and trash all over our lawn was not worth the headache on an already (naturally) stressful day. read more

The movers were great. The owner however is not. The estimate he gave meant nothing. It does not include travel, gas, any supplies-- nothing !!!! And they charge you for the drive TO your starting location ! We ended up paying $500 MORE than his BS estimate. Once we got our final cost, we had a much cheaper rate that included EVERYTHING from two other companies. This guy is a rip off. He nickels and dimes for literally everything. Do yourself a favor and do not use him. His service was a huge disappointment on moving day for us. The movers were very nice and relatively quick. But they did take a longer route to the new location. I left with them and it took me 30 mins less-- I refused to pay their BS amount for that. Hired Montclair Movers to move a large couch with chaise lounge down three flights of stairs to the basement and move a bed in the basement up to the attic level. This was not an easy job. Honestly I felt sorry for these guys having to move that couch especially. Eli and Roy came and made quick work of this job. They disassembled, moved, and reassembled the large couch (very tricky!) perfectly as well as the bed. Not the cheapest in town, but the work was SUPER quality and this was certainly a "you get what you pay for" situation. Plus Eli waived some additional fees which was much appreciated. Great job by these guys--would hire again. read more

Owner Elijah quoted a price not only did the price change once they got to my apt but he sent another moving company!!!! Who does that without letting his clients know??? My family had a cross country move that, as anyone knows comes in second most stressful thing in the world beat only by planning a wedding hehe I called at least 10 companies and had in-home estimates which that alone is so time consuming. I found these guys and they were close to my home in Jersey so I had them come out. The inhome estimate went smoothly and over all the representitive was courteous and professional. But the real reason for the review is the move itself. We had an appointment scheduled for Saturday morning at 9. The guys showed up a little early and can I say they just had the best morning attitude. (I am a morning person myself so I can appreciate the chiperness) They were funny and even helped me pack up some remaining boxes that I was rushing to finish. They wrapped everything in blankets and over all a very smooth process. When they left I got a feeling that I didnt think I would have when I started the process of finding movers and that was truly peace of mind. I even got an update phone call to tell us our things were arriving the next day. The guys who unloaded were different from the first group but just as nice and made sure I was happy with the placement of everything. Elijah (I hope I spelled that right) was hilarious and directed the guys and kept them moving quickly. You can tell they all have a great relationship. Moving is so nerve wrecking moving out of state can make anyone go crazy. These guys made this move a pleasure and took so much stress off of my shoulders. They came 3 hours later then scheduled, put a huge hole in my wall, had my belongings all over a main street where cars were driving by and almost running all of it over. Do not use this company. Our company is based out of Montclair and hired these guys to help with a move into a local storage unit. They came off as willing to help, and dealt with somewhat of short notice, however they were very unprofessional, and extremely underprepared. The manger was incompetent and unable to communicate effectively. He took a look at some of the belongings being moved early in the day, and waited until the last possible minute to communicate that he and his "team" were not NEARLY capable of completing this task. This was the case from management down to the individual employees. The move started late. They did not have any equipment (dolly, pallet jack, lifts, etc)! The employees were complaining about lack of notice from their boss regarding the amount of labor the move entailed. They debated leaving the job site to get food (I stayed on site so they would not), were bickering with one another, and overall not professional movers. It was very obvious they were not working as a "team," and after speaking with one of the employees on site, he made me aware that they in fact were not a "team" yet random guys thrown together with the exception of a couple steady employees. They were not stacking things properly, I had to intervene at one point and ended up doing physical labor myself. Our facility reeked like cigarette smoke at the end of the day. I highly do not recommend ever using this service provided by Montclair movers.There were a multitude of problems during my interaction with this business.The day before, we get a text message saying Montclair Movers was only able to gather 4 movers instead of 9.Since there was only 4 workers for a 9 man job, the workers were doing this move all day, and we were charged a further rate BEYOND THE FIXED rate we agreed upon. Furthermore, these movers dropped a box that was filled with expensive china sets and plates , all are broken. The fridge was dented along with an internal container being cracked and needed to be replaced,There were multiple items that were included into the contract that still to this day remain the older home. My main problem with this company was the fact that the workers broke my expensive main storm door.We immediately took picture and texted the manager asking to be reimbursed,and he responds with saying that " $1per pound "that was broken.This is absolutely ridiculous claim to take and shows a lack of compassion to their customers and a complete lack of responsibility as a service We currently disputing this claim and have even filed a report against this company to police dept. and going to file a civil. Please don" t make the same mistake i did and find any other moving company read more

I want to relate an exceptionally TERRIBLE experience with Montclair Movers. Roughly a month ago, I contracted with them to do a move between two houses in Livingston. They sent half the capacity (3 men 1 truck instead of 6 men 2 trucks), took TWICE AS LONG, caused IMMENSE DAMAGE, took my Grand Piano away and kept it for 2 days, lost or stole a black duffel bag with valuable items. Eventually, the move cost me more than what was quoted in the contract, but the damages cost me even more, but the aggravation was the worst. You might think that this is par for the course for a typical move. But wait there is more! The sales rep who quoted and contracted me and the moving scheduler abused each other and also abused me using ethnic terms. After the move was complete, the sales rep apologized profusely but did nothing to settle the damages after promising to me for several weeks that they will be looked at. Now the sales rep tells me that the firm has gone BANKRUPT and that he is with a different firm. I DO NOT wish this extremely harrowing experience on even my worst enemies. I took and provided the firm with pictures of the damages I took contemporaneously, but nothing changed. I am going ahead and filing a claim in the legal system But before then, I want to WARN everyone to NOT DO ANY BUSINESS with Montclair Movers unless you are suicidal. I have text message evidence of their personnel abusing each other and accusing them of FRAUD and performing the move WITHOUT INSURANCE. Please contact me BEFORE you contemplate doing ANY business with Montclair Movers or their business owners. There was a similar post from a West Orange customer a few weeks ago, but that seems to have disappeared now. So, this level of poor service is the norm and not the exception for this firm. read more
