My boyfriend and I went Saturday afternoon after 2 and it was perfect timing. Not a long wait at all to order but all the tables were taken but we were able to snag one up as people left. I ordered the 3 piece chicken tender and fries box. Deliciously cooked chicken and I'm not big on spicy or seasoning so I did get my chicken southern style and no seasoning on my fries. The chicken was super fresh, moist and hot! The fries were crisp to perfection! Literally cannot wait to come back here!!! We found this place on Yelp, and omg, I'm so glad we did. We LOVE hot chicken and just moved to the Phoenix area. We came in around noon on a Saturday, and the restaurant was fairly busy. We ordered on the kiosk, which was a little confusing for first-timers, especially with the long line behind us. But it was certainly a convenient way to order. We waited awhile for our food, but we didn't mind because the employees were all working hard. It's a very positive environment - fun music and employees dancing while they worked! We decided to eat in my car in order to be able to appropriately distance from others. Holy cannoli the food is sooooo good! I decided on the chicken tenders, mainly because I wanted the fries on the side instead of ordering an additional side with the sandwich (also less messy to eat tenders!). I got a heat level 2, and it was a little hot without being nose-running spicy. The fries had a nice seasoning on them as well. The sauce was so yummy too! Great place to get your hands on some large fried chicken sandwiches. They come in a southern style way in which there is coleslaw and pickle. You can also have it removed if you don't like these two. There are multiple spice levels to choose from and if you are like me who don't like spicy food you can have it southern style which basically is just salt on top your chicken. It comes nicely wrapped in two layers of paper and is boxed ready to go. There are several small high top tables for you to eat your food on if you don't want to take it to go. Hot damn! Hands down the best chicken sandwich. All other establishments need to apply. Tables, counters, and floors were clean. There were two ordering kiosks at the counter that were easy to use. Decor is contemporary, bold, clean, with mugshots of celebrities all over the walls. Soda fountain area was clean and well stocked. Trash can was not overflowing. Restaurant temperature was just right and the clientele was very diverse in age and color, mostly groups of three or more. Steady flow of customers. No parking lot as this is a downtown location, so you'll need to find a nearby parking garage or meter. Staff was friendly and confident and had a sense of urgency. Staff clothing was casual and well kept. Food ordered all had great presentation, was at the perfect temperature, and perfect texture. All food came in carryout containers which was well appreciated. Chicken sandwich was phenomenal, juicy, crispy breading, bursting with flavor, perfectly spicy, and made even better with the slaw and pickles. Sandwich buns were tasty and soft. You can choose how spicy you want the patty; I chose "hot". Hands down the best chicken sandwich. I can't think of anyway it could be better. Collard greens were so flavorful, I could eat a gallon. I've only been here once because it's downtown and parking wasn't very convenient, there is a parking garage not too far, maybe a 5 minute walk but you of course have to pay or you have to pay to park at the meters nearby, which would be cheaper than a garage if there are any meters available .. but I would recommend going if you are already in the area for other reasons. They offer Hot Chicken (in 5 flavors of different heat levels) as a sandwich, or Belgian Waffle Sandwich or Tenders with fries. They don't offer chicken on the bone here. You order at the counter on a computer screen and pick up your order yourself when your name is called. The atmosphere is very energetic with LOUD music. The decor is sort of industrial-modern-gangster style (you will see why when you are there). We split a sandwich (extra hot) a waffle sandwich (what da cluck) and the macaroni with sweet corn bread. The extra hot chicken sandwich was a GOOD Tasty sandwich. The chicken was slightly overcooked so it was a little dry. Don't get me wrong it was a tasty sandwich but the chicken wasn't developed with a lot of flavors like Hattie's is. Same chicken in the waffle sandwich......slightly overcooked...a little dry and not the most flavorful chicken. The waffle was tasty but it was cooked less than I'm used too. We tried the what da cluck on this one. It was nose running hot but I thought the extra hot was more delicious than the what da cluck.....What da cluck had a warm spice in it that was unusual....... The macaroni with sweet cornbread was a taste sensation I never had before. It was macaroni and cheese that had a sweet-salty thing going on. I thought the flavors of it were very good especially with the pops of fresh herbs. But the pasta was cooked more than I'm used too. Other things you might want to know. There is no parking. You have to park in a parking garage that cost $4.00 an hour or take the light rail. If you tip when you order the smallest tip you can easily choose is 18%. (I think that's a lot because nobody takes your order or delivers your food. You are tipping the kitchen. I almost never say a thing about prices......but $14.00 for a chicken sandwich w/o sides is high in my opinion. Staff was nice and friendly. We were asked how the food was. The sandwich is pretty large and the chicken is topped with pickles and slaw. The chicken has decent flavor but is more a dry spice rub and needs the liquid from the slaw. The sides were also good - id skip the fries and potato salad, but the Mac and cheese was tasty (corn bread topping was delicious), and the collard greens were also on point. We also had a milkshake, which was thick and creamy, and a moon pie as well which was huge. I have now visited Monroe's Hot Chicken in Downtown Phoenix and Tempe. They were both amazing. Great service, atmosphere, music, and food. I tried several items but my favorites were the spicy chicken sandwich and crinkle fries. I love when restaurants incorporate Hot Cheetos to their meals so I had to try it on the Mac and Cheese. I wasn't a big fan of it but it was still fun to try. For the chicken, there are different heat levels. I tried the "hot" level but it wasn't spicy enough for me so I tried the "what du cluck!" chicken tenders which were actually spicy. Next time, I will try the "extra hot" level. It might be the right amount of spiciness. If it's your first time, I still recommend starting with the "hot" level so you can know if it's best to go up or down from there. I have not tried the desserts shakes that that they offer but that will be on my list the next time that I visit. If you are visiting the downtown location, you will most likely have to pay for meter parking. In tempe, there is plenty of visitor parking in a garage. My wife got the strip box medium and we split the fries. My sandwich was amazing!! The dry rub was super tasty. The slice level was perfect, the chicken was super hot temperature wise so you j ew it was fresh. I mean I had to wait between bites for it to cook off unless I wanted to burn my mouth, but it's better than cold food! The extra strip was good. Again it was almost too hot temperature wise, not spice to eat. I'm glad I went medium on my main mean so I could eat it comfortably. If you like spice this is the place! The fries are amazing. The seasoning isn't over powering, but definitely adds a different flavor. I loved every bit of this and want to come back again and again. For the last couple years I've enjoyed visiting the Monroe's Hot Chicken location in Phoenix. Now a new location has opened in Tempe. Living in East Valley, the new location is a much shorter drive. The restaurant is a chicken shop that features hot spicy chicken in the tradition of Nashville hot chicken- dry spicy flavor added to deep fried chicken (not sauce based). The chicken is excellent and spiced to your request. The staff has many of the same team as from the original Phoenix location, so the food is consistent and flavorful. The space is laid out a bit more compact, but actually has more seating due to better spacing for patrons amid the Covid-19 environment we live in. Overall I am delighted at the opening of this new location better suited to serve the East Valley with Monroe's hot chicken. read more
