Stopped into Big Bacon's while visiting Arizona and I'm glad I did. This was my first time trying them out, and everything I ordered hit. I got the fried chicken wings with green beans and mac, and the whole plate was delicious and super filling. The wings were seasoned well, the mac was creamy, and the green beans had great flavor. But I had to give three stars due to wait time and customer service. when you place an order at 1:00pm and told it will be ready in 45 mins and you are waiting an additional 65 mins after your time that's insane. So two hours for 4 entrees. Cannot give a quote on when the food will be ready. The young lady working the front was sweet but I cannot return based on that alone. It's a really small place but it's cute! There were 10 of us who were in desperate need of some soul food so we decided to give this place a try! They were very nice but they were out of several items. They were out of greens lobster tails, and the seafood rice. I was a little disappointed because I really wanted the fried lobster tail and the greens. I ordered the catfish and it was not that good. Hence the four stars. They fried the fish very hard to the point where it was dry. Also I don't like only cornmeal for a breading. I think it needed a little flour in there. But even if it was just the corn meal. It was fried too hard and it dried out the fish. The shrimp were very good and the mac & cheese was on point. They do not serve alcohol so it's BYOB. We ran down the street to the CVS and got some beer and coolers. Parking might be a problem, so be prepared to park in the alley. Overall, we all enjoyed ourselves and everyone else enjoyed their meals. I just did not care for my catfish. Met some friends here on a Saturday afternoon. There is really no available parking lot so you have to park in the alley or on the side street. Dining area is small but we were able to get a table for four upon arrival. There is a wait for the food since it is cooked to order which is fine, The temperature inside was very warm and made it a little uncomfortable. They have you pay after you order your food which was different for a dine restaurant. The food is served in Styrofoam containers in preparation for needing to take any leftovers. The only recommendation for this would be to line the containers with parchment paper for the fried food items. My friend had a hole iburned n her container of fried catfish that was hot. The container my sister had was also melting from her fried chicken wings and my container had imprints of the fried shrimp I had ordered. The fried shrimp were good, but I was disappointed in the portion and size The shrimp were not what I expected from what I saw on their website. There were 8 shrimp and they come with two sides. As a fellow former Chicagoan, I came in hoping for the flavors I grew up with. Unfortunately, Big Bacons missed the mark for me. They do get a point for cooking to order, which I appreciate. I ordered the fried chicken wings with double mac and cheese as my sides. But let's talk about those wings... Every Chicagoan knows fried chicken wings = whole wings. What I got were party wings, and while I'll own that I should've asked to confirm, I did check Yelp photos beforehand and saw at least one showing whole wings. That wasn't the worst part, though. The wings looked like they were those pre-breaded and pre-frozen, and the breading was way too heavy. It was also either the heavy breading or they were jumbo-sized. Either way, I didn't enjoy them, I couldn't even eat them. Now for the bright spot: the mac and cheese was creamy, cheesy, and comforting, this side dish actually reminded me of home. This was the worst experience I've ever had going to a restaurant. It was a mom and pop restaurant whom recently opened. The my parents worked in the kitchen and the children worked doing the waitressing, taking orders. The young man was very nice and very friendly, asked if we wanted to go outside since the restaurant was packed. We asked were there misters outside, he said no. So, we opted to sit inside where he took our order. We came to the resturant because my daughter said the food was good. She had her food to go and thought that is why the wait was long. The first downfall was we were taken back because we had to pay up front. Then we were told the total was $187, I repeated three times did you say, 1 8 7 and he confirmed yes. After looking at receipt, the total was only $100.87--what a big difference. The sign said the food would be prepared fresh when ordered and the waiter confirmed. So, we figured the wait would be worth it. I've gone to other restaurants and the wait time was 30-35 minutes the food was nice and hot. So, no big deal on that. Second problem: after being there for probably a hour and a 1/2, we get the food and I was taken back because the food was brought in Styrofoam to go boxes. So, I was wondering where the plates were after a long wait we should have been eating on a real plate. Was my assumption. Third problem: after waiting an hour and a 1/2, I expected my food to be hot. The only thing that was hot was the catfish. It was hot and it was good, but the macaroni and cheese, the sweet potatoes were not hot. The Green Beans were hot. The waiter asked if we wanted to heated, we said no. Fourth and Final reason to not return: there was a couple who sat next to us, was saying they wanted to support blacked owned restaurants is reason they came. Asked our experience, my daughter told of hers the day before (above). After their food arrived we asked how their food was. And the the young lady was not happy with any of the food or its taste (wondered how you could mess up broccoli. She said salmon and garlic mashed potatoes not good). I believed she asked for butter, in hopes to make the food taste a little better. The waitress came out and told her that because she Ordered the butter There was nothing she can do, that she shouldn't have put it on potatoes. The waitress was rude and disrespectful and we were taken back. All of sudden the cook came out saying the same thing and said the butter was for the lobster ordered and she made the food salty and there she can do. Very rude and disrespectful, almost attacking the woman. Didn't come out to say; May I help you, can we take anything off bill, nothing. We were sitting there and was so taken back by the lack of respect, lack of customer service with the daughter and the cook to the customers next to us. So,we were packing up to go because we hadn't seen enough and the guest at other table and decided we were not coming back to resturant. The waitress speaking louding yelling to the guest/woman next to us behind the bar. They got up and was walking out the door. The final problem that I won't go back or recommend resturant. The cook/mother came from the kitchen screaming at the top of her lungs saying you don't holler at my daughter, just beat it, just beat it, just beat it, (and mind you the guest were already going out the door). Then the daughter came from around the bar and started arguing yelling at the lady while the cook/mom was yelling at guest while stepping towards guest. Finally, the other cook came out and put hand on cook and beckon her to back off. After that the cook apologized to us twice while cleaning table as if it wasn't their fault this got out of hand. I'm just thankful right now that no guns or anything was pulled out; that's how heated the owner I'm assuming the cook and the daughter were towards the guest while other guest were in restaurant because she didn't like the food. After I took food home and warmed it up, it was good. Never to return. The wait, the disrespect, and lack of professionalism, and then confrontation with guest; I would not recommend or go back. The place could have a go if they were professional, polite, Cut wait time down, be able to take criticism, offer an alternative if food wasn't right, not charge for food ahead of time for it doesn't allow for flexibility if a guest changed their mind. I travel to Chicago primarily for the food. I didn't have high hopes for this place because I find that when I visit a restaurant that the cook/chef is from another city that's known for their food, they don't represent well for their city when they open a restaurant here in the valley. That's NOT the case with this place. The food was freshly made, well seasoned, and delicious. Now for the part I dislike saying, but must be candid about in hopes that this will help them improve. They are primarily a take out restaurant that offers seating. That means you can dine in, but your food will be served in take out containers with plasticware. This also applies to the beverages (note: you can request a glass to pour your beverage into). The building is small, but clean and street parking is available in the neighborhood. This is a family owned and operated restaurant so you will need patience and grace. It took approximately an hour and 15 minutes for us to receive 5 meals. That is an inordinate amount of time when you have a 10 year old kid waiting to eat. The restaurant didn't seem busy (there was 3 other patrons waiting for food 2 of which arrived after us), but they could have been preparing to go orders too. All I request is that you establish the expectations of wait time because I would not have brought a hungry kid to this establishment (I would have visited with just adults). I arrived an hour after they opened and when we started to place our order we were informed they were out of greens. The cabbage was delicious tasting but a meager portion. The candied yams was made well - not too sweet but very balanced and good portion size. The lollipop lamb chops were seasoned well. I wish there was more rice served with them. The fried chicken wings and fried catfish were fried well and also seasoned well. The fries were too salty even for the 10 year old that likes fast food fries. My uncle had the mac and cheese and said it was delicious (it had the cheese pull appeal). Overall I would return again, but I would order online and pickup to go.
