We stopped by this simple but wonderful place for lunch after our visit to Mono Lake during this Labor Day weekend. Our kids loved the burgers, chicken fries and the frosties, and were overjoyed by the outdoor seating.... a lunch with a view of the birds and squirrels. Overpriced for what you get. It's a cute place and obviously a local favorite given the crowd at lunchtime when we stopped by. Our intent was to have a quick stop - we just wanted to get a quick bite to eat before continuing down the road and hoped this place would be faster than the sit down BBQ joint across the street. We were wrong. They are NOT fast here. We received our food, eventually - and to be honest, I had expected a lot more. If you pay $5 for tater tots as a "side", I expect REALLY GOOD tater tots. I came here with my sis and her family during my recent visit to the the Sierras. I really enjoyed my salted caramel shake - one of the best shakes I've had in a while. Great ice cream, good location. It's right along 395 going through to Yosemite, Mono Lake (hence the name), or the Eastern Sierras. Downside, the wait for the food can take up to 20 minutes. They really shouldn't send one order out all together (ice cream and food), while everyone else who just orders ice cream gets theirs right away. read more

After reading rave reviews about Mono Cone we had to stop on our way to Mammoth Lakes from Yosemite NP. The place was packed! First stop was the bathroom. It was clean and fresh. We then walked up to the outside window and had to decide what to eat. I quickly picked the guacamole burger and my hubby selected the pepper jack burger and fries. The food arrived shortly and was very appealing. The burgers were steaming hot and the generous condiments were crisp and cold. The sesame seed burger was fresh too. There were tons of fries and they were cooked to perfection. After scarfing down our lunch we had to try the ice cream. We each got a small cone and Hubble's was dipped in chocolate for a $1 more. These soft serve treats hit the spot and we even enjoyed a short walk to see beautiful Mono Lake after our meal. We will definitely return! read more

Quite simply, the best... I LOVE MONO CONE! Their Bacon Cheeseburgers are amazing! Their french fries are delicious! Their shakes and malts are out of this world!!! While I admit that their business hours are not the most convenient, as indicated by the line of people waiting to place their orders, they really don't have to be. Was only able to try a Coffee Shake and a Vanilla Ice Cream Cone. Both were very good! The ice cream was very smooth and creamy and had an excellent vanilla taste (instead of just tasting like straight sugar). The shake had right amount of bitterness from the coffee and sweetness from the vanilla. This was the first place I ever had chili cheese fries. They're a little piece of Heaven and no one makes them as good. I haven't been able to have their food in years as we now do our fishing in late October/early November to avoid parents with kids and rude photographers. But we went this June after attending the memorial service for a friend in Walker. So of course we had to have their food. Mom loved their turkey burger best of all. I had the chili cheese fries each time. And of course we all had to have Mono Cones. The owner, who was taking the orders, was incredibly sweet despite how busy and stressful things were. Especially that first visit because the high schoolers from Mammoth had come down and it took a great deal of time to get to the window. It can't be easy working in a small building in that heat when you're being descended on by a slew of teens. I only wish they would be open in October, or think about doing room service for people in Murphy's across the street. Been going here since I was still pooping my pants. Never been disappointed. Ordered just about everything on the menu and you can't go wrong with anything. Lines can get super long and that makes the wait for your food a little on the long side. I really like this place. I've been twice. The first time I got ice cream and it hit the spot. The second time I got a special: the Bacon BBQ Bleu Cheeseburger. It was pretty good. It was a bit too rich for me between the amount of BBQ sauce and the bleu cheese so I will try something else next time, but I felt it was still tasty. There were a few onion rings, a few pieces of bacon and a TON of BBQ sauce and bleu cheese. Places usually skimp on these things. The menu is HUGE. There is something for everyone and everything looks so good. Be sure to read the menu carefully. It is very easy to confuse ice cream flavors with shake flavors. There are some exotic shake flavors as well like banana, peanut butter etc. A lot of places make their shakes with ice cream so they are usually interchangeable. There are a ton of shake flavors so I am not sure what they use to flavor them, but it must not be ice cream. I'll have to try a shake next time. The only ice cream flavors are vanilla, chocolate, and I believe one other, but strawberry is not the third one. Only -1 because of the price vs. the size of the burger, the lack of combos, and no strawberry ice cream. None of those is a reason for me not to return. There is a nice sitting area in the back and it is steps away from the "World Famous Upside-Down House". Lee Vining is one of those towns that people usually just drive right through, but there is so much to explore and take in here. read more

Oh how I wish I could give this place negative stars! We stopped for lunch on our way through town and ordered a hot dog and mac & cheese bites for our kids. The hot dog came smothered in mustard, relish, and onions and the mac & cheese bites were spicy because there were jalapeños in them! So, of course, our kids didn't touch their food. So when we left I went up to the window to NICELY tell them that they should probably warn customers that the mac & cheese bites are spicy and they should probably make sure customers don't mind having their hot dogs smothered in condiments. The girl at the window got ridiculously confrontational even going so far as to insult my "picky" kids and then the manager came out and was equally as nasty to me! Absolutely awful customer service! I don't know if it's soo delicious because of it's food or because it takes 40 min to drive there from mammoth and the whole time you're thinking about how good it's going to be. Burgers, fries and a drink is what i usually get. Can be kinda pricey and there's no combo meal so you have to buy everything seperately. Bench seating in the back is nice on a sunny day. Very scenic drive on the 395 to get to this place and it's worth it if you're looking for a mellow afternoon trip to get out of mammoth. Take the june loop if you have the time too. There are awesome rock water falls in the spring. Only problem is figuring out who is going to drive their car there from mammoth at 450 a gallon. read more

Excellent small and independent shake / burger stand near Mono Lake. We were coming back from Bodie and stopped for a quick lunch. They were temporarily out of slushies (because they just sold a bunch and the next batch was being made), so we tried a peanut butter milk shake in addition to some burgers and onion rings. Can't say anything bad about it--the burgers were delicious and the shake was spot on. Cash only though, probably the only thing to watch out for if you're road tripping. read more

After a fantastic day trip to Bodie Ghost Town... (yes, you should go... it's worth the drive)... we were ready for something quick and easy. We chose Mono Cone because, well... ice cream and the fact that we had read about a grassy seating area and needed a spot we could rest and unwind with our dog. BUT-the sign on the patio said "No Dogs Allowed." :( We looked at each other like what now.... And I went for a walk with the dog while the others waited for food. Just steps away behind Mono Cone I stumbled upon a little museum and an upside down house... don't miss this picture op! But beyond that is a park where you can take your ice cream, lunch and dog and chill out and enjoy it all. No worries... it's really close by... go adventure! Kids liked the cheeseburgers. Hubby said the cheese on his philly cheesesteak was funky but the meat and onions were tasty. My turkey burger was salty but nice that the option was available.
