Here are the pros:
This restaurant is inexpensive and the food is ok- only about as good as a stir fry I could make at home. That said, it's much easier to walk into Mongo Bongo than shop, lug home groceries, prepare my own meal, and then clean up. (I'm lazy).
Here are the cons:
The soup didn't have much flavour, and the sauces used on the stir fries were watery and under-seasoned. (I could do that part much better at home).
The day that my friend and I ate lunch at Mongo Bongo the dining room area needed cleaning. Many walls and other surfaces had been splattered with oil/sauce/who knows. I get really turned off my meal when the environment is dirty, so I ended up taking most of my meal home in a to-go container.
The single wait staff working the floor had more customers than one person should have to handle, but managed to be efficient and effective anyway.
Unfortunately the other two staff members visible to us were not as professional as the wait staff.
The guy doing the actual grilling of the food seemed underwhelmed and unhappy to be working while he was at work.
The young lady refilling the buffet where customers choose their food items seemed to have very little clue what she was doing, kept dropping items on the floor, was grumbling to herself, and took a weirdly long time to fill a container with broccoli florets. She seemed to be counting them as she loaded them in, then appeared to lose track of the number loaded, and would start over. She was not dressed appropriately for food service, and at first my friend and I thought she was a very annoying customer who was fiddling with all the food. There were several people lined up waiting to add food to their plates, she caused something of a log jam.
Here are some suggestions for improvement:
-improve the sauces and/or provide *lots* of sriracha
-clean the dining room thoroughly
- keep the raw food buffets tidy and organized
- have enough wait staff scheduled to work busy periods if at all possible
- refill the raw food buffets behind the scenes
- keep clueless, angry, or otherwise inhospitable staff members out of sight (or provide them with enough training so they can present themselves as food service professionals)
I recommend Mongo Bongo to you if:
- you want to eat an inexpensive but HUGE meal
- you don't care about how clean and tidy the restaurant is
- you are very picky or have dietary restrictions (you pick out exactly which foods you want, which makes it easy to avoid things you can't, won't or shouldn't eat) read more
