30 years ago, I ate at a Mongolian Grill on Broadway that was amazing! It was in a different location close to GM Place, but I see this place relocated in the past couple years. Not sure if it's the same place, owner or family, but decided to check it out. Food was decent, didn't live up to the memory of my original visit, but it was better than most Chinese meals I've had lately. The Grill had limited items, but they made up for it with sauces. I don't think I've ever seen so many sauces on a Mongolian grill. Unfortunately, we were behind a family that didn't understand how the grill worked. Being experienced, I just know what sauces make the flavor I like, but this place has a map on the wall that explains about a dozen flavor profiles, for example, if you want Sweet and Sour, you follow the guide to combine 6 sauces, it tells you which sauces and how much of each sauce to replicate the flavor. This entire family of adults, just couldn't figure it out, even after having it explained to them. I hot and sour was hot and tasty and my plate ended up delicious. My only issue was the price. All you can eat lunch was like $17, but it appears it jumped to $30. In short, they dropped the lunch price and only have a dinner price all day. Most grills are about half for lunch and lunch typically does not include seafood. I don't think I noticed any seafood, but since I don't like it, I wasn't looking. Service was really slow, took 10 minutes to get our soup and rice, our server also appears to be bad with English, when didn't help the slow service. We enjoyed our food, but at the price, it just wasn't the deal it should have been. I'd love to come back, but will not because I'd rather make multiple trips with smaller bowls than make a single large bowl due to pricing structure. Pricing is why this 4 star meal didn't earn a higher rating. read more

I liked the idea that you can put whatever you want in the bowl, however much you want. I was taken back at the small size of the bowl. One of the reviewers mentioned how you can fit 3 meals if you do it right but at least for me I barely fit one meal. I think it really is about the techniques to stacking the ingredients. They also have lots of variety of sauces and a big sauce chart on the wall that you can follow if you want. With the $15 dinner one bowl option, it comes with a small bowl of rice (pretty small bowl and the scoop was small), a little salty miso soup or sweet and sour soup, biscuits, and cream puffs. Despite the small misses here and there, overall the food was pretty good and I was full by the end of it. Would go again! read more

The food here was definitely tasty, if not a bit oily (because it is a BBQ). What the name doesn't say is that there is a pivotal point of the restaurant, in which time is of the essence--there is only one grill. Not only that, but it's a flat grill, where the chefs perform awesome feats with two wooden sticks and toss your food onto the grill, cook it, and amazingly toss it back into a bowl. Now it sounds amazing, but as you would expect from this set-up, you need to wait in line to have your food cooked for you. So after you decide on what course you want, and get a bowl and stuff it with the meat, veggies, and noodles that you want, you'll have to wait for about 10 minutes (depending on the line). My issue was that the seats were quite tightly cramped, and we have to leave our stuff at the table. Not only that, but the single washrooms were always in use. Oh and we got a complementary bowl of rice and some flaky pastry, which were both good. The service was friendly, and decor was all right, and the lunch AYCE menu was decently priced (about $15), so I would say it was a good deal. I might come here again with my friends (and remember to put some kimchi or pineapple on my stuff after it's been cooked because I kept forgetting). read more

I used to visit Great Wall all the time when I went to UBC. It was easy to get to by bus and heck, I was poor. It was the best meal I could get for the price and I was actually full after. Don't worry if someone in your group is a vegetarian. You create your own bowl so you always get what you want. Also, don't worry about picking big bowl, small bowl or all you can eat. You pay at the end. So if you thought you could do all you can eat but only end up having a small bowl they only charge you for 1 small bowl. Very reasonable people. One peeve of mine though is when places don't have fountain drinks. So no free refills. Get your pop by the can. Their decor is a bit outdated but they tried to keep the place renovated. They don't exactly open "late" so hit them up around 6pm is good. They can get really packed for dinner. Free parking out back but limited. Metered parking out front. read more

This place, in my opinion is the most underrated restaurant in Vancouver. I am an hour away from this location(not Denman) and yet I come here regularly. It blew me away and I've introduced quite a few people now and they are all regulars now. The great thing about the dinner menu is that if you are careful enough, you can get two meals out of it. I usually fill it in a way to take almost half with me for lunch next day. And yes you can take the rest with you unlike the Denman location. That's almost 7$ a meal. Can't beat that. Aside from the meat/noodle/veggies/sauces bowl they will bring you a Mongolian pastry with soup(miso, hotspicy which I get) and you can get a bowl of rice as well and they end it with a nice cream puff. My fiance and I don't eat a lot so asked the Jr server if we can split one dish (a la cart) and she said OK. 80% finished our meal, a Sr server came over irritable and abrasive targeting us saying we cannot share and we should pay more. I said we didn't know the policy and I said that it's an internal problem and should be handled perhaps by training the staff better to avoid ordering issues amongst guests. Usually I go to the Great Wall Mongolian BBQ that was on Denman in downtown. However, yelp reviews said that the place was closed... so I came here. I called ahead to ask about the price before dinner and I'm pretty sure the lady on the phone told me it's $13.99 for all you can eat. So I took my group here. Upon entering, it looks exactly the same as the one on Denman, but when I looked at the price it was actually $15.99 per bowl and for all you can eat it was $20.99 (For dinner). Since we already sat down, we decided to just stay. The food was good, it's exactly the same as the one on Denman. They do have a better system here, where you leave your bowl, take a number and go sit down so you don't have to stand and wait for your food to be cooked. They offer you a bowl of rice, some appetizers, a biscuit type of item and also a soup. You're able to go back for as many round as you can eat since it's all you can eat. Which is great! The service from the only server there was great too!! I just wish the price was cheaper ... like $13.99 on Denman.. since they literally serve the exact same items!! read more

I've been going to Mongo's (as it's now called) for about seven years now and while I am a fan of it, I should be honest and say that a more realistic rating would be three, three and a half stars. I'm just biased on the 4:20 front. AYCE is amazing if you're eyes are a little more blood shot than normal, otherwise you end up wasting a tonne of food with the left overs. I remember they used to have this deal where you couldn't take doggy bags with your left overs out with you, I don't know if that's still the case but if you become a more regular customer there then they sometimes bend the rules for you. Personally I think it's kind of silly to just throw out all that extra food but hey, to each their own right. The service is great, again, I've been going there forever so the manager/head waitress is always really sweet and friendly. The new soup they're putting out with the meals is kind of weird now, I remember it used to be hot and sour soup, which was EPIC, but alas those days are gone. Either way, I'll still gladly eat it. Since I drastically cut down on my toking I'm not here as often, but the point is that I still do go in. The bottom line is basically that if you feel like smoking with some friends and being gluttonous, this is the place to do it. read more

This would be the third time I tried out Mongolian BBQ, and I am glad I did. We were a group of about 12 people who went for dinner around 7 pm on a cold January night. The interesting thing about a Mongolian BBQ is that you can choose your own ingredients (meats, vegetables, noodles, sauces), and there's a cook at a large grill who cooks them for you. Not only is this great for people who have dietary restrictions, but it is also fun to mix and match ingredients and try out a bunch of varieties. I had previously been to the downtown branch of the same franchise, and was slightly disappointed with the location and interior of that place. But, the W Broadway branch was a cut above on both accounts. Although the price of the AYCE at this branch is $2-3 more than the one in downtown, the ingredients here looked fresher, the waiters were pleasant and served with a smile, and the cook on the grill was super efficient with the huge number of orders coming up his way. One of the ladies serving us was even kind enough to give me an extra serving of the dessert (picture attached) they were offering with dinner specials and AYCE. Apart from the grilled food, they serve a bowl of soup, a bowl of rice, a mildly sweet bread covered with sesame seeds, and a "puff" for dessert. Definitely recommended. Tips: 1) If you love eating as much as I do, then go for the AYCE option instead of the dinner special one. The dinner special($13) allows just one bowl, whereas, for an extra 3 bucks, the AYCE offers unlimited servings. :) 2) In case you have never done mongolian bbq before, the meat, once cooked does shrink up. So, you might want to slightly compress the contents of the bowl with a spoon from time to time while filling your bowl to the brim. 3) Sometimes, when there are long lineups, it just makes sense to have multiple bowls lined up at the grill, to avoid having delays between two bowls. 4) In case you go for AYCE, it might make sense to have a mix of all kinds of meat in your first bowl. That way you would get a good idea about what would be the ideal choice of meat for the second and onward bowls. 5) If you opted for the AYCE but could not have more than one bowl, no problem - you pay only at the end, so if you ate one bowl, you pay for only one. 6) Lunch AYCE is slilghtly cheaper. read more

Go in, grab a bowl and go down the line. First, pick your meat. It's all sliced nice and thin. Beef, chicken, pork or lamb. Add as much as you want. Then add your noodles and veggies. Broccolli, mudhrooms, spinach, celery, whatever you want. Now you make your own sauce. They have a guide posted there for different favours. I always get the tall guy with the afro to make mine and it is awesome every time. Leave your bowl at the end of the line and they will cook it and bring it to your table. Sometimes they have pineapple and snap peas at the end too that you can add before or after it's cooked. The place looks kind of old and dumpy but the food is awesome. The staff is super friendly and I always have a great time when I go. All you can eat for about $12 but they will charge you an extra $3 if you leave lots on your plate, which is fair. This Mongolian grill is the stuff of my childhood. I remember being very small (second grade?!) and pummeling meat into my little bowl in an attempt to get more food for my money's worth (my family only ever went for lunch, and never for the all-you-can-eat option.) It was always dirt-cheap and delicious, and I'd always get excited for a trip to the Mongolian grill the way kids in commercials get excited for a place like Swiss Chalet. Unfortunately, Great Wall has changed owners several times since I was in the second grade. It's either this owner switch-up, or my palate becoming more refined, but the food just seems to have been tasting worse over the years. The all-you-can-eat does offer that delightful option of eating just chicken and pineapple, if you're so inclined. The service was attentive but quiet. The restaurant is clean -- in fact I see the cook cleaning up the grease here when I walk by nightly. He's even squeegeeing the mirror behind the grill. I appreciate that thoroughness. The worst BBQ All You Can Eat restaurant which I had with my family. There is not any taste of lamb or beef after cooking, you feeling is having sawdust. This restaurant provides small raw freeze shrimp as a material for BBQ cooking. Unfortunately, each small bowl shrimp (ABOUT 5 SMALL SHRIMS IN ALL) needs to pay extra THREE DOLLARS. But, the "3 dollars for each bowl shrimp" is mentioned by a very special way, they only have a 1 centimeter wide 5 centimeters long paper slip which is pasted on the top of glass canopy above the food area that is much higher than your eye sight range. This restaurant has about 15 tables. My family had lunch in this restaurant from 11 to 12 o'clock on Saturday noon. However, there were only TWO table's customers, 8 persons in total. What a delightful restaurant-went with a party of 8 and enjoyed a delicious meal with plenty of fresh veggies and an assortment of meats. The sauces can be combined to create new taste experiences. The rice was served in a small side dish, perfect for me to scoop small spoonfulls into the teriyaki sauce as I ate. Dessert came as mini cream puffs, chilled nicely, adding a perfect finish. Dinner was not rushed; the staff were friendly and pro-actively attentive. All in all it was an enjoyable time spent sharing food and conversation with family. This is the first time I'd ever been to Mongolian BBQ, but we came in on a Wednesday at about 3pm looking for a quick meal before heading to work. The restaurant was about 1/3 full when we came in. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was that it was very humid, it didn't help that it was quite warm out today too. It looked like an old Chinese diner, the atmosphere wasn't the best, but I wasn't expecting much from what it looked like from the outside. A lady greeted us at the door and directed us to a booth, it seemed like a half quick service half table service restaurant as we had table settings and she asked for our drink order but since we had to go up to grab our own food, I wouldn't call it a full table service restaurant. It was $11.95 for you to fill a bowl with whatever you'd like from the buffet style counter, and the cook would grill it for you on this huge skillet, it was surprisingly quite good, the flavours were all there and all the food available looked really fresh. I would frequent the other 'mongolian' type restaurant on main street, but that location upped it's AYCE menu to $15 so I thought that I would revisit this location which would be the same price. I've forgotten that this has way better quality ingredients. Better sauces, better cuts of meat and better veggies. This one even has chinese mushrooms. Everything was great flavoured and the quality is on par with other trendier places such as Noodle Box which I think is a bit of a hipster ripoff. If you're looking for a cheaper AYCE option, for lunch it's $13 which is still reasonably priced. As a plus they leave a pitcher of water at your table.
