We were introduced to Monarch Prime & Bar through a Yelp Event, but this was our first visit for a full meal service. The restaurant is in the Hotel Deco on Harney St and I guess that is the main entrance to the restaurant. Since Yelp has the address as 316 S 15th St we came in through the side entrance on 15th St.
The restaurant is on two levels, half is on street level and then there is a sunken dining area that has cozy booths around the edges. It décor is romantic, dimly lit, color scheme is black, gold and red and with music playing in the background, making it a perfect place for date night. I can't think of another steakhouse that I have been to that has such a fantastic atmosphere.
I took Lois there for Valentine's Day and they were serving a four-course pre-fix menu. We got there at 6:30PM and were greeted by a friendly hostess and were seated immediately on the street level looking out onto 15Th Street. There is enough space between the tables, so you don't feel cramped nor do you get the impression that your eavesdropping on your neighbors or vice versa.
The waiter who was friendly and knowledgeable came and took our order for the first three courses, we ordered desert later. While we were waiting for the first course to be delivered, they brought over a couple of Macaroons, explaining that they are complementary, and that they are always available on a table in the lower dining room. They were a nice touch and tasted good too.
For our first course we had Ghislane which consisted beets, arugula, raspberry, and black walnuts covered in a Ghislane sauce. It was a delicious way to start off the meal. The Ghislane was paired with a very nice Zinfandel wine. (It would have been an added convenience if they had shown the wine pairings on the men.)
For our second course, we chose the Wedge which was a wedge of lettuce with lamb bacon, tomato confit, egg yolk, dill, and croutons. The Wedge was paired with a Neyers 304 Sonoma Chardonnay 2016.
For Lois's main course, she ordered the Striped Bass consisting of striped bass, fume blanc, fingerling potatoes, smoked salt, and charred rutabaga. This was the first time that she has had Striped Bass, she's a true Midwesterner, meat and potatoes., but the fish worked better with her diet. She loved it. I ordered the Scallops consisting of scallops, garganelli, lemon, arrabiata, and broccolini. The scallops were cooked to perfection. This course was paired with Vinabade Albarino Rias Baixas wine.
For desert we had Strawberry Shortcake. It was paired with a port wine. I also added a Jameson and coffee. It was the perfect way to end a perfect evening.
The service was outstanding. Each course was delivered on time, not too early nor too late. They checked on whether we were satisfied with each course and made sure our water was always full.
I think Monarch Prime & Bar is in a class all by itself. I know of no other steakhouse in Omaha that delivers the experience that you get at this restaurant. For a romantic evening, this is one of the best places in town.
I'm looking forward to trying their 45-day-aged Prime Rib. read more
