This hotel was... A unique experience on a few levels. I think the word quirky fits it well! I showed up a little early, about 2pm on a Saturday since check in was listed at 3pm. I figured I would check if my room was available, nonetheless. It wasn't, but oddly... They gave me the keys to the room and then told me they would call. At 3:30pm, I hadn't received a call so I walked in to check and they it was ready! Later I told by locals that most places in Port Townsend won't let you in a room prior to check-in time whether the room is open or not! The room itself was great. The view was spectacular, it came with a gas fireplace, full kitchen, even a little loft bed in one part of the hotel. I say in one part because this was definitely big enough to be called a suite. Even the deck overlooking the water was big. It had a full size picnic table along with a porch swing. The affordances were dated, a little worn, so if you are expecting historic five star remodeled to the original state when it was new - this is not it. If you are thinking historic, clean, and a little time worn with character, this is for you. Just don't get their before check-in!

WE loved this place. We stayed in the large room on the 3rd floor. I think it was 15. It had a full deck and kitchen. There was a very large bathroom with a clawfoot bathtub. There wasn't any place to put our suitcases unless we wanted to put them in the bathroom closet which is very large. They could use a few of those suit case holders and a small shelf in the bathroom for makeup. The view was amazing. Everyone that stayed in the hotel was friendly as well as the folks that worked there. Mary helped us with destination guidelines many times in person and on the phone. There are A LOT of stairs here, in the entire town. It was so much fun. We will be back. We couldn't turn the heater or fireplace on and only had a few blankets so we were a bit cold. We didn't see any ghosts but I'm sure those floors can talk.

Stairs leading up to the rooms. I love the feel of this place!

We had such a pleasant experience staying here. We unfortunately were arriving a bit later at night and the hotel was very accommodating. The room (suite 21) itself provided so much space, was quaint and quiet, and everything we were looking for. The history of the hotel was enough to get me to stay, but i'll be returning for the lovely staff, setting, and perfect location. Would recommend!

A classic 19th century hotel with lots of stairs. Five of the rooms share two hall baths, but the rest have private bathrooms. Our bathroom had a modern tub and toilet. The sink is original with TWO faucets for hot and cold water. The sink which is in the main room is a reminder to how much smaller people were back in the 19th century! I am 5'9" tall and the sink is thigh high on me! But hey, you stay in a classic building with all the charm of it's original design.....it's fun! The rooms have incredibly high ceilings and ceiling fans. The upstairs lobbies are an atrium lit with big skylights. The second floor lobby hosts a coffee room where you can heat up food and fix yourself a morning coffee. The bed in our room was comfortable and the room kept nice and warm although the weather was incredibly cold and windy outside. A guest needs to have sturdy knees to navigate the stairs, especially if you're staying on the third floor. But it's worth it. The rates are reasonable and you get to stay in a bit of Port Townsend history. This place used to be a bit "wild" in the not too distant past. A prior reviewer mentions the bar on the main floor. The bar is gone and a quieter retail establishment is moving into the former bar's space. The wi-fi was a bit slow and I wasn't able to upload my photos to Facebook. Gotta wait till I get home.... If you want to stay on the water, experience some history this is the place to stay!

Before I say anything else, I want to say, I love this place! I have stayed here several times in several different rooms and l have always had the same unique, cool, calm, pleasant experience. Oh, and architecture!!! Astounding. It's so quiet, but still on the main "Water Street". We arrived Thursday for my daughter's father's birthday. They had a 20% off coupon online that they happily honored verbally when checking-in. They allowed us to check in early and were extremely friendly. All of the rooms are different at this hotel and you can look at their website and pick the room you want, which is just super cool. It was built over 100 years ago and has the same, beautiful charm it has always had. We opted to stay in room 9, $48 before tax with a shared bathroom with four other rooms. What a great price! This was never a big deal (the shared bathroom) and everyone was super clean and cordial. The room had two queen-size beds, a sink and 2 mirrors, two dressers, a TV, and windows surrounding the room. They also had great WiFi and cable TV. The beds were quite cozy and the room itself was very large. We came during winter time, so keep in mind, if you're coming during this time, a lot of things are closed, it's cold and very windy, and if places are open, they close early, like 5 or 6 p.m.. That said, there are a lot of really cool little shops there. It's just a fun town. I will post the restaurants we dropped in to. In the morning, coffee and tea were available. So, all in all, a great experience. We will definitely stay here again. Maybe during the spring time next time, but definitely check out the online coupons! (FYI. There are a lot of stairs, so if that is an issue, I would talk to the front desk about if there are accommodations). Thanks excellent staff!

We stayed in room 6. It's an old Victorian house with a number of antique artifacts including instruments, guns, books, etc. There is no elevator - you have to climb the stairs to get to your room or downstairs to the billiards table & guest fridge. The innkeeper is extremely sweet. She welcomed us in and explained about the house. At 9am (prompt), she serves breakfast, which was a delight! It was a full 3 course meal - everything home-made (or from a local bakery). Honestly, the breakfast here was better than our dinner at a restaurant the night before! Our room was very cute - it looked like the inside of a doll house. For my husband, who is a tall man (6'2), he felt a bit claustrophobic because the ceiling comes inwards. But for my 5' self, I didn't mind. Everything was clean and had a nice presentation. They even had home-made cookies waiting! We really enjoyed our stay, and it was nice to have a sit down breakfast with the other guests and chat together. There's also a sweet doggo named Ursa who you may see putter around. For a nice weekend away from the city, this is a very cozy quaint place to stay.

Loved this place!…read more I'm giving 4 stars, but in reality, it is 4.5. Location: The location is great. You're located downtown and can walk to any shop or eatery in the area. The Digs: There's no attendant, so you need to book in advance with the lovely manager, Marilou. She really cares about the hotels she manages and truly wants your stay to be a memorable one. Upon arrival you will get codes for both the building and your room. Speaking of the room, when you enter, you are greeted by music playing on the radio and a few lights on. A nice, simple touch, especially after a long day of traveling. The old hotel is super clean and cozy, yet modern. It almost feels like you're staying at a friends house. This is definitely a gem in Port Townsend and I would not hesitate to stay here again. The minor "constructive criticisms" that I have are to give a good corner scrubbing along the baseboards in the bathroom and to keep the soap and shampoo fairly full to give the "illusion" that your guests are the first ones to stay there.

[Note: no extra plush blankets provided, but the in-room heater was good]. Reviews of the water front motels in Port Townsend mentioned bed bugs which scared me and led me to book here. You should think about staying at Mansera Castle if you like character and history because the building has a palpable sense of olden times built into the architecture, the creaky stairs, the narrower door frames, and the oldest working elevator in the state (it's a bit like a freight elevator with brocade dressing). However, the lack of accessible entryway (a flight of steep stairs to get inside) and an antique elevator that is only operable by hotel staff should warn off people with limited mobility, injuries etc. I used the wonderful WiFi for a night of iPad entertainment while toasty under the covers. It was a fun experience for a night, but it might have been louder had the hotel been full. Nearing Christmas, the hotel staff had decorated the erstwhile Victorian-era wealthy resident's home parlor. This was rather charming to see and definitely not replicable in a sterile, modern hotel chain. This vast building was subsequently used as a Jesuit boarding house for decades. The hotel amenities are barebones relative to a modern hotel chain where you might expect a writing desk fitted with desk lamps, and numerous outlets, etc. My room came with TV, refrigerator, a coffee machine and insufficient wall outlets. Even the internal phone system was non existent. Downstairs lobby has coffee in the morning. No breakfast included in the price. The whole historical immersion experience is unique however.
