A very nice place to stay for a quick getaway in Port Townsend, with a full 3 course home-made breakfast! My husband booked our stay here for a quaint Valentine's day getaway. We stayed in room 6. It's an old Victorian house with a number of antique artifacts including instruments, guns, books, etc. There is no elevator - you have to climb the stairs to get to your room or downstairs to the billiards table & guest fridge. The innkeeper is extremely sweet. She welcomed us in and explained about the house. At 9am (prompt), she serves breakfast, which was a delight! It was a full 3 course meal - everything home-made (or from a local bakery). Honestly, the breakfast here was better than our dinner at a restaurant the night before! Our room was very cute - it looked like the inside of a doll house. For my husband, who is a tall man (6'2), he felt a bit claustrophobic because the ceiling comes inwards. But for my 5' self, I didn't mind. Everything was clean and had a nice presentation. They even had home-made cookies waiting! We really enjoyed our stay, and it was nice to have a sit down breakfast with the other guests and chat together. There's also a sweet doggo named Ursa who you may see putter around. For a nice weekend away from the city, this is a very cozy quaint place to stay. read more

We recently stayed at the Old Consulte Inn as part of our vacation. I just received an email from them asking if there was anything they could have done to improve our stay. Well, the answer to that is "nothing." Absolutely nothing. They were incredible! From the personal greeting from Nathan and Cindy, to the period consumes, to the home-made cookies in the afternoon, to the architecture of the Inn, to the decor of the room, to the fragrance-free bath soap, to the use of non-disposables, to to the very comfortable bed, to the absolutely amazing three-course breakfast and the conversation around the table, to the espresso machine and on and on. A very comfortable bed with a lovely view of the water. The house is a true Victorian built in 1889 and furnished authentically with much love and care. The innkeepers' collections of instruments, weapons, and a bit of steampunk paraphernalia adds much personality and fun. Not only is the house decorated in period appropriate fashion, it is designed for comfort of the guests - something that others sometimes forget! This is a unique place. If you like antiques, you'll love this place- it is filled with amazing things collected by both the current and several sets of previous owners. Our room (#1) was huge, with a very comfortable queen bed, and the bathroom was also spacious. The two breakfasts we had were both delicious, with some unusual versions of some of the dishes. The rooms have a French press for making coffee; if you make coffee in the afternoon, and will want coffee before breakfast, you should call the innkeeper to get more coffee. As we were on the road after we left, we got a call that a lost earring was found in the bathroom. They express shipped it to us and we got it back 2 days later. read more

The Old Consulate is not your average B&B., it is an experience into the Victorian age, a taste of living history or rather imagining what it would be like. The beautifully maintained Victorian home for Cindy and Nathan's B&B is resplendent with top notch period furnishings. They themselves maintain the Victorian illusion by wearing simple clothing that harkens to that time. At the time of our visit they were in the process of revitalizing the grounds with a true Victorian garden. Walking up a few steps to the wrap around porch, one enters the vestibule which has a sitting area, fireplace and display cabinet featuring antique items like mens top hats and unusual stringed instruments, such as the hurdy-gurdy and cittern. The livingroom includes a 1930s piano, which another guest was playing 1900's era music on as we entered...what a treat upon arrival! There is also a harp, should one be inclined. On the first floor there is also a library where the coffe and tea is available 24/7, and the dining room with a view of the water. The second and third floors are for the guest rooms. There seems to be a wide variety of room choices. Do keep in mind that when Victorian homes were built bathrooms were not part of their original plans, so in subsequent years they were shoe horned in. Expect them to be small. Not much room to place your stuff. In the basement they have a pool table and sitting area for playing board games. We stayed three nights while exploring the area. The three-course breakfasts are gourmet, and served promptly at nine o'clock. Our room was on the third floor, front of the house. Air circulation in these older homes aren't what we are used to, so it was stuffy in there and our window was always open. The website warns of the court house clock bell going off hourly. If you are a light sleeper there are earplugs provided should that help. If you think this could be an issue for you, probably a room facing the water would be better as they are in the opposite side of the house from the court house clock bell. We enjoyed our stay. This place! I was recently here for a wedding and had a fantastic time. There is something for everyone whether it's sitting outside on the porch, reading in a corner, playing pool downstairs, playing the piano, or just relaxing. The view of the harbor is great, especially if you catch a rainbow--there was a full double rainbow during our visit--and deer run around the neighborhood. The owners are wonderful. I highly recommend this beautiful, well maintained Victorian B&B. The Old Consulate Inn is a historic home in excellent condition. The owners Cindy and Nathan, both Victorian enthusiasts, are highly professional innkeepers. They think of everything, including ear plugs for those disturbed by the courthouse clock nearby. This place is amazing. The staff were very welcoming & personable, always dressed in Victorian-period service livery. The billiard & game room in the basement was a great place to wind down from our day of adventuring. I can not even believe how lovely our room was. The wi-fi was handy and the signal was strong in our room, as well as around the property. The Master Suite was nearly too grand & large for the 3 of us, but the claw foot tub was a really nice touch. Breakfast was divine, served in 3 courses. Delightful place for a romantic getaway! Visited here with the bf for a quick Port Townsend trip, and were welcomed by name at the front door. Cindy took my order for breakfast since I had dietary needs, and the bf loved their coffee machine and "cookie corner." The place has a lovely view of the water and was easy to find. I took a good soak in the clawfoot bathtub and their local lavender soaps were very soothing. Boyfriend wanted to look at all the museums, I just wanted to stay in and relax my whole time here! I mean, there were even Nerf guns in the game room downstairs. We felt like kids, again! read more

I just returned from a lovely weekend at the Old Consulate Inn, and could not have better things to say. Every room was beautiful, unique, and oh so cozy, making for the perfect city escape. Cindy and Nathan were so accommodating and sweet, and the breakfast was absolutely amazing. The inn is in beautiful condition, and looks out over the gorgeous Port Townsend Lighthouse and Puget Sound. We stayed in the honeymoon sweet, which includes an amazing room in the Victorian turret of the building, so that when the sun is out you have perfect light all surrounding you. This suite could not be more relaxing. The claw foot tub was also incredible. This is now easily my favorite place to stay in Port Towsend! read more

This old Victorian house was built in 1889 and housed the German Consul from 1908 to 1911. It's now a state landmark and a hotel. I've stayed here twice since 1990. It's a neat old house with rickety floors and stairways and a cozy feeling. They serve an excellent breakfast in the mornings as well. The rooms are all well-decorated, maybe a little too much actually, but they're charming and comfortable. Most of the rooms have Puget Sound views out the windows. One great thing about this B&B is that my dad and his parents lived in it when it was an apartment building in the mid 1940s when my dad was an infant. They lived on the spacious third floor which is now divided up into different rooms. My dad gets all teary-eyed when he goes back there. My grandfather was stationed at nearby Fort Worden. The owners have been running the hotel for several years and love doing what they're doing. I highly suggest a stay here. It's worth the expense. read more

This is the ultimate Victorian home experience... this inn was build in 1889 the same year as the Eiffel Tower! The host and servers were dressed in 1800's attire and the room we stayed in had the cutest decor and wallpaper. I was in awe when one of the other guests (quite older than me) stated that this is the best of the best Bed and Breakfast and one of her favorites. Since it was my first time, I could not be more happy to experience it. They serve a "3course breakfast" and have an espresso machine for tea and coffee. Lots of great books, boardgames, a monopoly table, pool table, grand piano, harp, and multiple reading areas are available and I wish we stayed longer to "lounge" and absorb all the fine details. My husband and I recently stayed here for our anniversary weekend. I have to say this was the best B&B I have ever been to. It felt like we stepped back into time. The building grounds were beautiful and the rooms and decor were stunning. The library was one of our favorite places to relax; in the comfy, overstuffed leather chairs. The game room downstairs had a beautiful billiard table and the glass top deluxe Monopoly table was so much fun. We stayed in the tower suite, which was beautiful. The bed was so comfortable and the sheets were wonderfully soft. Our window looked out onto the water and across the way we saw deer grazing in the meadow. Truly picturesque. Vegans, welcome! I can't really add much to all the wonderful reviews of this gorgeous place and its friendly hosts, except to say that we were thoroughly delighted by everything it had to offer. The house was perfectly Victorian, and also perfectly comfortable with modern conveniences. The hosts were friendly and conversational, but non-intrusive. The location was wonderful for walking into downtown Port Townsend, close to the Co-op grocery store and other amenities. One of the best things, which set it apart for us, was the perfect willingness to create a fully vegan, three-course breakfast for me and my husband. Sitting down at the table with all the other guests, we never felt left out as each course we received corresponded with the "normal" course, and was thoughtfully presented and very delicious. The Old Consulate Inn is a very nice, historical Victorian, B&B. We drove here from Seattle for Labor Day weekend. When we arrived, we were so taken back by the amazing house, we walked around the outside. The garden was beautiful, the view was amazing and there was a gazebo in the back. We went inside and was greeted by the innkeeper. He explained the history of the house. They had menus of the nicest restaurants in Port Toqnsend, on the table. It was a beautiful house with so much character. We took our bags to our room. The room was nicely decorated and extremely clean with free wifi too. We had a great dinner close by that night and the next morning we went down to the dining room for breakfast which is served promptly at 9am. Breakfast was fantastic as well as their coffee which you can make yourself at anytime but is served to you at breakfast. The presentation of the food was excellent. The platonic ideal of a Bed and Breakfast, and one of the best in the Northwest! Feel like Longfellow as you stare broodily out over the idyllic lighthouse and roiling seas! Cozy up to a tome of ancient mysteries as you nurse the complimentary espresso machine! The town is as unforgettable as Lovecraft's Insmouth, but instead of creepy fish people, it has quaint shops, museums, delicious food and A+ beer. My girlfriend and I came here for a weekend getaway and highly recommend the tower room, which will fulfill the dreams of anyone who's ever wanted to live in a castle. Downstairs there is a recently re-surfaced pool table (YES!) and plenty of books and board games. You will have entertainment aplenty, dear yelpsters! On the subject of food -- breakfasts were decadent to the max. I worried I would foie gras myself, but thankfully, the available walks are all stunning and will leave you feeling like some sort of Thoreau-ian ubermensch. Did I mention they leave handmade truffles in a little basket on your door? I am not a frilly person and certainly don't own any doilies or tea sets. This is a Victorian Bed and Breakfast and I just decided I would go for it, flowered wall paper and all. The place really is beautiful; it gets the mix right. This is not a sparse modern house, it is full of period furniture and old books and lots of lace. But you get also get really clean rooms with comfortable beds, a nice hot shower and 5 star service. It was endearing to wake in the morning, come down stairs to get a cup of coffee and chat with the other guests that had the same idea. I played billiards whilst drinking cognac. I listened to another guest play the harp and piano in the conservatory. I knitted on the porch swing that overlooks the bay. I got my B&B on! And it was fabulous for this big city gal. Nathan and Cindy, the new owners are lovely. I wish I were rich enough to pay Cindy to make my every meal. I have few regrets, but requesting only a half order of the Eggs Benedict is up there. I looked so forlorn, my husband gave me his last bite. Love this place! read more

For what it is, it was nice. We stayed in the dog friendly room, which was really tiny, and the bed...really squeaky (and this is without any romantic notions!), it was also...not that comfortable! My shoulder is sore from sleeping on that creaky old bed. The bathroom is nice-sized with an old claw foot tub and they must have an excellent water heater! I took a hot bath. The fact that we could bring our dog was really wonderful, and they had very thoughtful touches throughout the house, including ear plugs, in case you didn't like the sound of the bell from the courthouse across the street, and a little box full of dog stuff in our room. Dogs are not allowed in common areas, and not allowed to be left alone in the room, which I have found this to be pretty standard. Our poor little dog spent equal times out in the car, as he did in our tiny room. If you are interested in history, and love old houses, and don't mind the awkward breakfast with strangers (also pretty standard) I would say this would be an excellent fit for you! The currently owners are new , they've been doing this for a year and a half or so, I found the male in-keeper to be a bit awkward, not sure if this is his calling! Also, I'm not sure if this is standard, but after we got back from breakfast, we walked up to our room to grab our stuff, and the bedroom door was ajar. The housekeeper was in there, stripping our bed at 10am (check out is 11am). Correct me, if I'm wrong, but isn't the checkout/check in difference so all of the housekeeping stuff can happen in those in-between, hours? Not when our stuff is still in our room? She looked surprised when we walked in, and then the inn-keeper also looked surprised when he knocked on the door shortly after, looking for his housekeeper. (Probably to warn her we were no longer at the breakfast table?) Long story short: My husband and I decided we don't like people enough to ever stay in a B&B again, this one was charming, and awkward. read more

I had a 3-day mid-week stay at The Old Consulate Inn and really, really enjoyed it. It is a wonderful old house in a very central location. The rooms were all unique and beautiful. I, personally, stayed in the Tower Room (#5). It has an extremely comfortable king bed (I was pleasantly surprised at just how comfortable it was), a small bathroom, and a glorious sitting room (in the tower) with a 270-degree view of Port Townsend and the surrounding waters. The weather cooperated, so I had abundant sunshine in my cozy little crow's nest. Even though I was on the 3rd floor, it was fun walking through the house to get downstairs. I felt like I was in an Agatha Christie mystery. Cindy and Nathan appear to be the perfect "Innkeepers". They clearly enjoy the house and their roles there. Full of knowledge and enthusiasm, I felt very warmly welcomed. The food served for breakfast each day was excellent - and abundant! Nathan and Cindy Barnett were great hosts, and the breakfast was to die for. The other guests were also a lot of fun to talk to over the meal. I was driving by Port Townsend after a visit to La Push and decided on the spur of the moment to stay over. I happened ton the Old Consulate and was charmed by its exterior. The interior was even more appealing, and the stay turned out to be far better than I had imagined. Owner Cindy greeted me at the front door and showed me around. The common areas on the first floor feature ample seating, a piano and guitar, and a comfortable library with a wonderful collection of books to page through. Each suite has a unique character, the larger ones graced by elegant decor and sweeping water views. I chose in the cozy rose room and found its bed and pillows to be superior, its furnishings generous; its heat set by the guest; its position protected by the hourly chime of the carillon; and its bath enhanced by a huge claw-foot tub. It was as comfortable as a destination spa. I decided to stay an extra day. The most unexpected and amazing aspect of Cindy and Mathan's convivial hospitality was the breakfast. Having had mostly breads, eggs, and muffins at B & B's, I never expected that chef Cindy would be able to create a gluten-free breakfast that I would be able to eat, but she put together a fantastic, healthy vegan breakfast that suited perfectly (a better menu than Miraval Spa, and that is saying a lot :)! I especially enjoyed the location. The Inn is a short walk from both uptown and downtown shops and restaurants that feature local art of national significance (like Gallery 9); extraordinary wild-caught salmon from the Cape Cleare (available at the Silverwater Cafe, the food co-op, and other places), and unique shops (the Wandering Angus and Writer's Workshoppe were personal favorites). The owners have a gentle and good-natured dog. I must admit that I am ordinarily wary of dogs, and do not enjoy their company, but this dog was an exception--very sweet and content to lie quietly nearby. Also, the noise of the landmark carillon can apparently be difficult for some guests, so the proprietors provide earplugs.) I often have difficulty sleeping, but had no difficulty at all in the rose room. The rooms are not cheap, but the quality of the Inn more than justifies the premium. In sum, I can't wait to go back and stay in the Inn again! read more

A beautiful Red Victorian at the top of a hill, overlooking Port Townsend and the Sound. The host/cook was extremely cordial and well-versed in the history of the inn and the area, even the eclectic lighthouse across the street. The basement has a great billiard table, darts, and games. Be prepared to eat the biggest breakfast of your life with the most courses you've ever seen. Here's a list of one of our breakfasts: yogurt parfaits with mandarin oranges and mint, Belgian waffles with strawberries and cream, grilled polish sausage, poach eggs with Hollandaise sauce, spiced applesauce, and lemon pound cake with rum sauce. Seriously, be prepared to stuff your face! There were deer outside our window the second morning in park across the way. There is also a hot tub and lovely grounds with porch swings to laze about in. This inn has a wrap around porch so when the weather is nice, it would be a great place to read, journal, meditate, chat with your loved one, etc. read more

My husband and I had the true pleasure of staying at the Old Consulate Inn on April 13, 2013. I had found there website by somewhat of an accident and thought the home was lovely in the pictures. Since we were spending a week in the area, I decided we should drive over for a day and check out the town and stay in the Tower Suite. We hadn't originally planned to visit Port Townsend, but who could resist such a charming place? It turned out to be one of the best accidents of my life! I have never met two people who poured more of there heart into what they do. Every detail, every experience was perfect. When we arrived, (an hour late due to my own negligence, as usual) we were greeted with smiles, warmth and fresh baked cookies! Knowing we had driven from Victoria B.C. to La Push and back to Port Townsend in one day, they immediately helped us with our luggage, accommodated our late arrival with ease and offered us rest in the sitting room with a lovely tea and coffee selection. Intrigued by the house, we asked Cindy and Nathan about the town and home, and they told us stories and answered all our questions without hesitation. What an amazing history! Cindy and Nathan even dressed in period style clothing from the late 1890's and early 1900's to give you the whole experience. We stayed in the Tower Suite, which has a king size bed, old claw foot tub, and a lovely separate sitting room with windows all around for the most beautiful views of the town! They turned down our beds and gave fresh chocolate truffles, and my husband and I sat in the sitting room and looked out over the bay until the sun went down. The best part of the room.....the SOAP!!!! They use Townsend Bay Soap Company products....a product I was unaware even existed until this moment. It is homemade bath/body products made right there in Port Townsend and was the perfect touch! I bought some the next day, and have since ordered enough for my home and all my families home here in Texas. They also have a full billiard room down in the basement and it's a must!! If you don't have time to play pool or a game of Monopoly on the vintage table, at least do down and check it out. It's like it's straight out of a book or something. The breakfast was incredible!! Fresh fruit, fresh squeezed OJ and coffee, followed by eggs benedict that was to die for, and then they finished with a homemade bread pudding that melts in your mouth! We sat around the large dining table with the other guests and had an amazing time.
