Stayed here for 4 nights in April visiting family. Lots to like but visitors also need to be prepared for a few things. Other reviews are correct: great location, lots of old charm, nice staff, great lobby and brunch, comfortable beds. All 5 stars. But I think for price point, this hotel is not value for money. Rooms are a bit dated with old carpets (according to my wife, ours smelled). Small bathroom with not enough shelf space. Room has no place to hang or put clothing so we had our stuff sprawled all over the place. The hotel needs some upgrades to charge what they charge. 3 stars. One annoyance: The hotel staff tried to presell / upsell overnight parking at $20 when there was plenty (plenty!!) of free parking a block away (and according to my family, parking enforcement is pretty lax).Why do that? 1 star. We chose to stay here for our 6 year anniversary. It was perfect for us. Old style rooms with beautiful antique decor and a lounge downstairs for drinks. My daughter had her wedding here in the back garden. The staff were amazing. The weather looked iffy, so they were willing to move us indoors at no extra charge. We ended up with beautiful weather, so it wasn't necessary. We booked catering with them and were very pleased with the quality and presentation of the food. If there is a downside to the Bishop Hotel, it's the lack of an elevator. Lots of stairs to the 2nd & 3rd floors, but this is an old building, so that's to be expected. Charming, clean, comfortable rooms (some allow dogs) and pleasant, helpful staff. I'll be back. read more

We loved our weekend in Port Townsend! What a charming little maritime moment. Reservations for 11/15 for 2 nights. Had an emergency with my pup on 11/12. Cancelled from the vet emergency 1 hour an 18 min past time, they kept my entire 2 night charges. Thanks for understanding. Favorite place to stay in Port Townsend. Conveniently located in downtown and steps to uptown makes this hotel great for walking the town. The lobby and bottle shop offer amazing wines and foods for hanging out. There is a beautiful garden behind the hotel to enjoy and even live music (will have to come back for music). The rooms are very cute and have nice amenities such as new comfy beds, L'Occitane shampoo, conditioner, soap etc. Red and White wine to choose from in the mini bar of rooms at a great price of $30 / bottle. We had the white and it was super good especially for the price. We enjoyed morning coffee in the lobby as well which was brewed for us by one of the hands on owners Eric. He was so kind and helpful for recommendations to places to shop and eat. Can't wait to stay at our favorite PT hotel again. read more

I was immediately struck by the beautiful and friendly lobby/reception area. Light, airy, very spacious and super stylish... a very welcoming atmosphere. So well done in a classic historic building. The staff throughout the hotel were very professional, friendly and extremely helpful. They always greeted with kind smiles. A true example of fine hospitality. The location of The Bishop is great, we walked everywhere! The room was very spacious, super clean, lovely linens and well equipped with all essentials and fantastic windows! We opened the windows in the evening to feel the breeze and it was so quiet & lovely. You must check in, head downstairs to the bottle shop for some wine & snacks (my fave was the buckwheat crackers & salmon dip, all made from scratch in house!) If lived in town I would bring my laptop and order a cappuccino and hang in the bottle shop. I have no hesitation in recommending The Bishop to anyone visiting Port Townsend. Will be back to this place soon. This Bishop was a really perfect place to stay. The room was very clean and SO cozy and inviting with the fireplace! The bed was unbelievably comfortable and it was so quiet. Saturday night Jazz was divine, paired with the Douglas Fir Negroni we felt transported to a different time. V at the front desk provided thoughtful recommendations for food and was a delight to work with!! Thank you for your help. A great experience! I came for Thursday night jazz and had a lovely time. There's a large parking lot for easy parking. The bar is also the lobby for the hotel. The vibe is immaculate- beautiful, clean, character. Many types of seating including high tops, small tables, couches. No larger tables. Ordered a glass of sauv blanc (highly recommend), the cheese board which comes with 3 cheeses, crackers, almonds, and a rhubarb(?) jam, and also a chocolate croissant which you MUST get. We had a great long weekend in Port Townsend at the Bishop hotel. Our room was clean and comfortable, very nice beds and excellent service. They have a delightful lobby restaurant that is warm and inviting. We enjoyed music both Friday and Saturday afternoons! Then went on to enjoy dinner in town. Everything is easy to walk to, fun shops and antiques! The new manager was awesome, there was mix up and she took care of everything! Great people! We will be back! read more

The Bishop made a great long weekend even better! All the staff we interacted with were professional, caring and helpful with recommendations. The boutique, coffee, pastries and wine are all top notch and very fairly priced. The location is perfect, has ample dedicated parking spaces and has an awesome backyard courtyard with several fire pits. Lastly, we stayed in #25 which is well appointed, great mattresses, pillows and linens. We also used the pull out sofa which also had a VERY comfortable mattress, plenty or pillows, and comfy blankets...nice surprise! The pullout is normally an afterthought. Highly recommend The Bishop and will hopefully get to stay there again as Port Townsend is really a special community with loads of activities in the area. This historical hotel gets it!!! Returning to the city after a two-night stay at the Bishop and cannot say enough good things about my experience. When I checked in I was greeted by the owners who made me feel right at home. I arrived later in the evening (in February) so was tickled to find a small fireplace already lit in my room for a toasty and cozy first impression. Nice touch. It's one block away from the main drag of town, which I found to be the perfect balance of access and privacy. They also had a sign in the lobby greeting the doggos that were currently staying there, which was adorable/hilarious, but also good to know that they are pooch-friendly for future visits. We had a lovely 1 night stay at the Bishop Victorian! Although I was secretly hoping for a ghost encounter that never happened the entire time, it was still a great experience. The antique decor was extremely quaint and the staff was very friendly. They hand you real keys that were sanitized and in a zip-lock back so we felt assured everything was clean and safe. You're also right downtown and walking distance to everything Port Townsend has to offer. Take a trip back in time and visit the Bishop Victorian! read more

The location of the hotel is right downtown. Many restaurants and shops located nearby. King room (3rd floor) was very large. Bed was OK. King room had full kitchen setup. Funky old building with lots of character. Room was fairly dated. Shower faucet was broken (they "haven't had time to fix it"). Hot water is limited - shower fast. Skip paying for breakfast - you just get to select items from a bunch of processed foods. No A/C, but windows did the trick on our stay. No elevator, very steep and long stairs to get to the rooms. This place sucks! AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE!! It smells like dust, sweat and mildew. This carpet is hella old and is probably the culprit. No elevator just stairs. I stay on the second level. I should have been two flights of stairs but these are unusually steep and narrow steps. The furniture is old outdated and worn. The bed is very hard and uncomfortable. The windows do not have screens just two cut screens propped against the window?! The kitchenette is cool if you are really planning on cooking but otherwise useless. Why do I have to pay for $10 for parking in a gravel covered parking lot?! This should be free!!! I'm a guest paying $200 /night !!! This isn't New York !! Now let's talk about these walls!!! They should be sheets because they are HELLA THIN!!! Imagine hearing your neighbor having sex next!! Moaning and o my goodness COULD BE CLEARY HEARD!! Sound as they were in the same room. Was here 2nd week of June 2023 and the experience was great. The staff are friendly and helpful. The owner (yes, the owner) helped us get our bags up the two long flights of stairs to our rooms (all accommodations are two room suites). The rooms were nicely outfitted. The hotel itself is very cute - well-maintained in Vintage style, with modern touches for comfort. The bottle shop on the ground floor has a fantastic selection and the garden out back is absolutely lovely. All that said, the 5 stars are mainly for their service. We had a family vacation planned and had a serious family emergency interrupt our stay. Through a number of difficult plan changes and back-and-forth needs for lodging, the staff went above and beyond to help us and make sure we were still taken care of. Charming, cozy with thoughtful touches. The small suite hit the spot for a grown-up night away from the kids. I adore the look of the hotel and the high ceilings. (This hotel seems to be what McMenamins wants to be.) Had a sumptuous dinner at Alchemy (2 doors down) and enjoyed the final bit of our dinner wine (using the lovely wine glasses) in front of the warm fire. Loved the comfy sofa and separate living area. Also warmed up on the cold night in a hot shower and spread the nice smelling lotion! We hope to be back. read more

Loved the historic nature of everything. Dark woods, heavy curtains, exposed brick, giant fireplace in the lobby. The suites were nice in that if someone was sleeping, you could be in the living room without disturbing them. The room, with most of its decor matched the design of the historic hotel, except that the kitchenettes have been updated. However, updated to the 70's. Would love the kitchens to somehow "downgrade" at least back to the 50's in cabinet construction. Breakfast delivered in a basket each morning is a nice touch. Awesome location to downtown. We watched the New Year's Fireworks right outside our window. There is no elevator, and the stairs up to the 2nd floor are LONG! So you better have good knees to stay here. read more

My family and I came to Port Townsend for two nights to have a break from the city. We wanted a mini vacation with things to do for the kids and restaurants/retail to choose from while staying in a hotel that would be comfortable for the family. The Bishop Hotel was perfect!! Our room had a small kitchenette, dining table, two bedrooms, large bathroom, and a living room with a fireplace, couch, TV, and siting chairs. It was so comfortable!!! First things first: this is a Victorian Hotel. Do not expect to see elevators and modern conveniences, a porter or super fast wi-fi. It is what it is. Get over it. Repeat- expect to carry your luggage up one flight of stairs, maybe two, and they're steep. However, every room is a suite with a small kitchen and fireplace or fireplace/heater, and they are clean. Secondly, the staff is friendly. Check in's have always been pleasant and they are full of local information. One time we asked about parking and the lady said "Don't worry, this town only has a budget for one police officer so park wherever and whenever. " Loved that. Third- the hotel is within walking distance to everything downtown. Park your car and leave it, unless you need to go uptown, which is great in and of itself. If you love Italian food, head up to Lanza's uptown. So if you decide to lower your expectations down a notch, and do not expect modern touches, you will be happy here. My wife and I have been coming here for years, we've brought friends, and it is a great little place to enjoy and use as your homebase while you explore PT and the area. The bottom line: it's clean, comfortable, local, they are friendly and their rates are pretty reasonable for the area. read more

Stayed at the Bishop Victorian while in town for the Port Townsend Film Festival. The location was perfect as it is just a block or so from the Rose Theatre and the sort of "heart" of the film festival. which made it easy to bop back to our room for a spell in-between movies and such. Our room included a separate living area with a fireplace and a kitchenette. Breakfast was delivered to our room each morning. It was pretty basic (bagels, cereal and the like), but enough to get the blood pumping and to get us going in the AM. Our only complaint was our room had only a double size bed which made things just a little too tight and cozy even though we like each other a lot. Next time, we'll be sure to book earlier and reserve a room with a queen size bed. Overall, this is a dandy little place with very friendly staff. We would definitely stay here again on a future trip to Port T. read more

We showed up late on a sunday without a res. The receptionist was nice and gave us a screaming deal for two nights on one of their nicest rooms. We got a two room suite with fire place and kitchenette and a view out the front. There were deer in the yard adjacent to the hotel. I have never thought that I needed to stay on a Victorian hotel, but now that I have I have to say that the experience was wonderful. Very comfortable, clean and not too over the top gaudy as I would have thought. Only wish there was more of a view. read more

Stayed here for three nights and loved it! It's a cozy little place with very nice decorations (okay, maybe a bit on the girly side... but nice). Staff is very kind. The cleaners leave you these little comment cards so you can communicate with them. Our room was equipped with two bedrooms, kitchenette, and a fireplace. It also had a DSL line in the room. They have coffee and tea available on a table on the third floor at all times. Good location: it's not on the 'main' street, it's just one block away--good walking distance from just about anything. Breakfast is brought to your door in the morning. I have a teeny tiny complaint about it: our yogurts and juice were delivered warm once. I think that's the only negative thing I can say about the whole experience. Loved it! Would come back again. read more

My family and I cannot say enough wonderful and fabulous things about this hotel. We wish we could have stayed longer! We stayed in I believe suite 16 with our two children a 6 year old and a 13 year old and they loved it as well. Hotel is clean, rooms stay warm, TV is good and beds are comfortable. The staff is fantastic! We had been stuck in horrible traffic, (took us an hour and a half just to go 20 miles) and we were exhausted by the time we arrived. They had choices of coffee, tea, hot chocolate and home made cider when we got there. My daughter was excited to pick a movie and some popcorn. The breakfast showing up in a basket was adorable, food was good enough and again staff was fantastic. The only minor con was the pull out couch mattress is not very comfortable, but the couch itself was. We would def. stay here again! Thank you for such a wonderful experience! read more

Check in was easy and hostess was very friendly and informative on the town and eateries. There are no rooms on the ground floor, nor an elevator or bellhop. The first floor is up 26 steep steps. The second floor is up another 18 steep steps. If you have luggage, hire a Sherpa. 44 steps up/ down is definitely a challenge. While the rooms are comfortable in the old fashioned way, the pet odor is very apparent and if you have any pet allergies, beware. Additionally, the walls are thin and you can revel in your neighbors conversations and snoring and the noise from the local seagulls is a morning wake up call. They do however, offer earplugs... We will choose a different location for our next trip to PT. read more

Wonderful gem of a Victorian-style hotel in the heart of downtown Port Townsend. We've now stayed here a number of times - 5 or 6 over the last few years. The location is wonderful - walking distance to all of the downtown shopping district as well as to Point Hudson... park the car in their private lot (permit required - get one on check-in) and leave the car - if you're even remotely agile walking, the entire town is just a stroll away. We've stayed in a number of rooms - most recently #17 and prior to that #16. Both are pet-friendly (I believe they have five rooms that are) so we can bring our little Shih-Tzu on our trips as well ("pet sitters" are available if you want to leave your gentle pet while going out to dinner). Room 16 has two bedrooms and a larger living area - very nice spacious room. They all have gas heating fireplaces that are very nice in the winter. The staff are generally wonderful - attentive, helpful, friendly. The room attendants are always friendly and prompt - offering to help carry bags down the 26 stairs from the second floor to the first.... yes, 26 stairs - no elevator (there is one room on the first floor that's accessible but that's it, unfortunately). The breakfast options are simple but in our experience, fresh and very nice - yogurt, bagels, cheerios, milk, juice, etc. - delivered in a very Victorian little basket at either 7:00 AM or 9:00 AM, your choice... no additional charge. In the wonderfully Victorian lobby there is always free coffee, tea, apples, cookies, and a comfy sofa seating area. Down the hall is a nice black & white photo gallery of Point Hudson, and a zillion DVD's to choose a movie for your room. And of course, free popcorn for the microwave in your room! Over 30 years, my wife and I have stayed in every hotel in this town - every one. The Palace, the Waterstreet, the Belmont, etc. etc. - and we consider the Bishop to be simply the best and fully deserving of 5 stars. But just to be fair so folks won't be disappointed - here's some things to be aware of: There is no elevator to the upper floors. You must climb 26 stairs (with your stuff) to the second floor, and they're kind of steep. There is only one "handicap accessible" room, on the first floor behind the lobby. The lighting in all four rooms we have experienced is not all that pleasant - no dimmers, no warm reading light while on the sofa with a book - it's pretty harsh lighting. There is no air-conditioning - in summer, the rooms get warm on hot nights but the windows open really well, with drop-in screens. You would do well to pack a small fan if you need a little extra cooling. The walls are in fact thin - you can sometimes hear laughter, snoring, conversation from other rooms - but this is typical of ALL old Victorian hotels. The lighting in the bathrooms isn't the greatest either (lights over sink but not the shower), and there aren't handle grips in the shower or anti-slip mats - with pretty high-sided tubs, you just need to be careful getting in and out of the shower. I ONLY point these things out for information purposes - IMO, they do not lower the rating of The Bishop - but for some folks, could be very important things to know and we merely want to make them known in our review, as they are things we noticed. But all in all, the Bishop is a full 5 stars and the best Victorian hotel in Port Townsend... 35 years of staying in the various hotels in PT we've seen them all many times. Dave & Anne read more
