We reserved the JFK building for my daughter and son-in-law's After-Wedding party in June 2023. Even with a few staff changes during the months we were arranging things with Fort Worden Hospitality, and a few reiterations, the staff was very accommodating and pleasant. On the day of the party, we arrived at the JFK to set up flowers and a photo booth, and the room looked splendid. The sitting and standing tables were nicely arranged with white tablecloths, the food tables off to the side, bar set up on the other side. Clean and pleasant. Our DJ had the perfect spot up on the stage with provided speakers and a table (with a table skirt) for his mixer, turntables, etc. For our afternoon reception, we picked hors d'oeuvres that were served at the perfect time, tasted delicious, and everyone loved Eddy the bartender! The standing tables were easy to move aside for dancing on the wood floor, and we did dance! I love the charm of this old building. It has been nicely restored inside with a soft green paint on the walls, new but historically appropriate light fixtures, modern bathroom fixtures...not overly done. The setting overlooks a large grassy field with an iconic madrone tree, and a view of Puget Sound beyond the Fort. Thank you FWH for a wonderful party!

**TRAVELING DURING COVID-19** PLEASE TRAVEL SAFELY, MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING, WEAR YOUR MASKS. We decided to end summer with a quick trip out to Fort Worden. We've never been to the peninsula, but the pictures looked promising. We chose to stay in the Bliss Vista cottage which is on its own private lot. Tons of privacy and beautiful views of the beach, Puget sound + both mountains (Baker & Rainier). Hikers do tend to pass through the yard, but it wasn't a not a ton of people & no one ever tried to peak thru the cottage or do anything sketchy, so that was nice. hehe Definitely distanced from others which is important during the pandemic. The cottage does not have AC so we packed our own fans which worked out well. We were traveling during the beginning of Sept so it cooled down quite nicely at night so we kept some of the windows open. Lots of breezes since we were on a bluff. The cottage has 1 bed which is not in a separate bedroom. It's towards the side/back of the living room. We packed another queen size airbed because there were 2 adults and 2 young kiddos. Space wasn't an issue. The cottage was very well maintained compared to another busy resort-type of hotel we recently stayed at. We are clean freaks so we brought our own cleaning equipment and wiped down all surfaces b/c kids tend to touch EVERYTHING. Shoes were kept on because let's be real, Americans (non asian) tend to wear their shoes inside the house *eye rolls* which makes for very dirty floors especially when they're carpeted. Sigh - why are shoes worn INSIDE the house??? Legit serious question for those who do this. Overall, the stay was nice and my family enjoyed themselves here. We did not do any dining out and brought all of our own food to cook. The cottage has a full kitchen. I did bring my own pan and pot. The kitchen has maybe 1-3 cooking pots/pans. There is no plastic wrap or aluminum foil. They do provide 1 bag of coffee and 3 packs of organic teas. No dishwasher so bring your own dishwashing gloves! Plenty of toilet paper for our 3 day stay (3 rolls). Plenty of hand towels provided which was much appreciated. We stayed from Sunday-Tuesday. Sunday was bumping and Monday + Tuesday was a ghost town. Most of the restaurants/eating places were not open in Fort WOrden. The grounds is pretty massive. We didn't do much exploring, but we did go down to the beaches and lighthouse (which is closed). Check out the photos for more views of the cottage. Booking at a cottage is probably your best bet unless your group is large. It's perfect for 4 people.

He offered to help me with my bags into the Zen Cabin. The wood stove warmed the cabin with its sparkling flames. He offered me some tea. I had seen pictures on the website- but lo and behold its real! Could it really be more beautiful in person? Yes it can! Erik has created a place that is warm, tasteful, uplifting, sensual, spiritual, comfortable and comforting. I stayed 3 nights. Zen River Retreat helped me to rest, recover from my hectic life---I was thankful for the quiet, the enchantment, the long soaks in the hot tub by the river. Days gave way to solid nights rest in the cozy comforts of a very nice bed's firm mattress. During my stay I was so happy to find the kitchen so well equipped; I had everything I needed to cook up my nourishments. Less than 2 hours from Seattle! I plan on going back in the every season to enjoy newly the place I love to call "my perfect getaway" to see nature's beauty unfurl along that delightful Lil' Quilcene River Erik likes to call The Zen River~~ He really did create a treasure for us to enjoy! Any photos you find online please realize are taken at creative angles to make you believe that you are about to frolic in the Elysian Fields for a weekend, when really you are down a 15' dirt driveway overlooking a glorified puddle of a pond, with the nosey owners 100' away. You will realize that this is no bargain after you check out and are pursued by the owners for "damages." Their chief rhetorical strategy is as follows, and I quote directly from email correspondence: 1. Overstate the extent and severity of the damage. (e.g.: "Hot tub trashed beyond recovery. Inside filter askew and light cover broken"). 2. Cite a preposterous figure for what repairs would "normally" cost. 3. Back off that figure slightly, while implying this is because they are such reasonable/kind people. It's classic, really. Please don't picture some Spring Break scene in the hot tub, with tequila-fueled games of chicken fought with pool noodles. We were two couples in our early- to-mid thirties who ended our soak by midnight each night. There is no way our collective grunginess could have clogged the system, nor do I think a "cracked light" = "trashed beyond recovery." Then they tried sticking us with a $15 charge for not putting the dishes away from the dish rack. They backed off. But they did try. And, finally, my favorite blanket statement of indemnity: "The stove WAS FUNCTIONING WHEN YOU WERE THERE AND UPON YOUR DEPARTURE, but because it had been bumped hard enough to move and displace the stove from its normal position it set the stove pipe and internal logs askew is not typical. WE REALIZE IT MAY NOT HAVE BEEN YOU directly that caused the displacement but it is why WHOEVER RENTS THE CABIN IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEMSELVES AND ANY GUESTS KNOWINGLY OR UNKNOWINGLY for any damage." Ask yourself: Do you really want to deal with these people? I rest my case.

We found…read moretheir brochure while eating at a local diner and asked if we could come by and look before booking a room. What a pleasant surprise. The owners were quiet nice and the cabin had everything we needed. The property.was beautiful and the cabin setting was quiet lovely looking out over the water. The weather was a little cool but it made the hot tub and fireplace a real treat each night. The cabin was neat and clean and the beds were wonderful. They have two cabins they rent and I hope to plan a family reunion for the summer of 2011. I think my grandkids will love this place with it's campfire pits, fishing pond and little boat. Over the last decade we have mostly stayed at hotels or B&B's but finding these furnished vacations rentals on our travels has made our vacation / road trips more peaceful and enjoyable. Two thumbs up for this little rental in the woods.

My group did a working retreat here, checking in September 30th, 2011…read more Although the paperwork agreed to said we could check in at 3:00 PM, Gina allowed our out of state group to check in much earlier. Thank you! The furniture was all on the newer side, in good shape and very comfortable. One thing somewhat missing from the photos are of the front and back of the property. If there were, you would notice the property is on a really steep hill and there are lots of stairs. From the street level leading to the house, there are perhaps 25 really steep stairs. It wasn't an issue for anyone in our group, but I can see some people with difficulty negotiating stairs having problems and would definitely not recommend this house for you. The stairs don't go away once inside. It is a 4 story house with stairs everywhere. The bedrooms were really hit and miss. All had some kind of flat screen tv inside which was a nice touch, however some were rather "unconventional". For example, one bedroom on the top floor was up against the roof line, losing headroom and made it difficult to walk in around the bed without crouching. But, let's face it... You aren't renting this house to stay in the bedrooms all day. Another thing I thought different from the pictures is the water... Again.. more stairs and a hill to go down, but the water is MUCH closer than the photos show. The hot tub was a wonderful getaway in the evenings when it was misting outside... Great to look out over the water and relax. We did notice a few nozzles on the hot tub were not working properly, but that was minor. The rear yard/ beach area seemed very private. I know there were houses nearby, but the tree lines, bushes etc made it seem very private! This house is spread over 4 levels... So although it is good sized, there wasn't one particular room our group of 12 people could all sit down in sofas together in... or even eat a meal together.... We managed to pull up a few kitchen table chairs to the main room and make due, and ate "buffet style" in two groups.... The kitchen table seats 8 and the sofas in the grand room seat 6 comfortably... so if you are looking for one huge room where everyone has a seat, this house kind of lacks there. I have pointed out the worst about this property... and it isn't that bad. I would go back here in a minute... In fact, we are thinking about a family trip next time we visit!
