My fiancé and I returned about 5 years after our first visit in Summer 2019 to find the House under the stewardship of Natalie and Dave, and our experience was just as lovely as the first time! The food was absolutely exquisite. We ate breakfast beside the sea both mornings and Natalie did a wonderful job serving us. She was so friendly and thoughtful around our dietary needs. We felt very cared for and the environment was so serene. Dave even offered to wash our car after it got some bird dung on it! This is by far the best beach house B&B. Right on the beach to hear the surf and gulls. Classic, clean, and wonderfully restored. Authentic windows,big baseboards, excellent charm in doors too. That is just the beginning. Step inside! We booked this lovely home last minute as a four day getaway. Greeted by the owner's family we felt instantly at home. A quiet warmth with fireplaces, candles, easy chairs, a cribbage board, and a full coffee tea bar in the main room. Out the sliding door is a full covered porch and comfy chairs to watch the tides roll in or out. Very protected by the wind. Humming birds dance on the side. Wood deck chiefs and a swing on the lawn. We chose the Lighthouse room with king size bed. Amazing mattress, window view of the beach and lighthouse of Walden Park. Nicely decorated in nautical beach old time and up dated treasures. Window open to hear the surf. Steam heat is amazing warmth. beautiful room with a sitting room and full bath. If you need to take an extra person there is an extra room connecting with bed. We did not need this room, but nice if we bring a few with us. This is the one you want to check on first. If the website is not working with the WiFi (rain and storms happen in PNW). Then give them a call. Dave answered all our questions and booked us in. This is after one year of covid 19 and this place is clean and staff genuinely kind and responsible. We will come again. The sunsets are surrounding on walks from beach house to downtown port Townsend. We came in rain and still had a fabulous time. Beach house does not have a TV but doe totally relaxation who really needs one. WiFi and electric for cell phone is in place. We ditched it all to enjoy the simple time of a beautiful beach house on a walkable beach and close to marina. We will come again!! read more

The best experience you could ever have in Port Townsend is right here at the Commander's Beach House. All the rooms are exquisite, however, I stayed in the lighthouse suite. This suite is equipped with a king size bed, a sitting area and bathroom. They really paid attention to detail in every part of the house, but the lighthouse suite has a beautiful, intricate sea horse dresser that adds the perfect touch to the room. Oh, and the bed was super comfy, you just drift to sleep as soon as you lay down. Such a beautiful and unique room, the views also cannot be beat. From hearing the waves crash through the night to an amazing homemade breakfast while feeling the ocean breeze on your face, a stay here is highly recommended. Natalie and David are literally the hosts with the most. They make sure every guest has a wonderful, unique stay. They are knowledgeable about things to do around town, as far as sightseeing and great recommendations on places to eat near by. The house is very conveniently located to shopping, dining and the beach. I highly recommend visiting the Commander's Beach House, you will feel right at home, but with fantastic views of the beach. Jim and Gail have been wonderful hosts until three years ago when they sold it to their son and daughter-in-law. No worries, they do a great job and Jim and Gail still live in PT. Firstly, Jim and Gail have a beautiful home, in a perfect location (5 minute walk to the town), with parking to the side of the house. When I arrived in the evening, Jim greeted me at the door, showed me my room and got me all checked in. He advised that I would be sharing the bathroom with him and Gail (I knew upon booking that it would be a shared bathroom). I asked what times they normally use the bathroom, and he let me know usually in the early morning. This was in no way an issue for me and it all worked perfectly. The bedroom (Sunflower room) was very clean and comfortable. The next morning I would be taking a trip early, so they were able to accommodate me for breakfast earlier than the 9am time, which I really appreciated from them. The breakfast on both mornings was made fresh, with fresh fruits and egg dishes. As the house is located right on the beach, I was able to take advantage of short strolls along the beach front, or just lounge in their garden. I also found the other guests very respectful and except for the breakfast preparation downstairs, this b&b was very quiet. Overall, Jim and Gail are very friendly hosts, able to give loads of suggestions for restaurants, and keep their home in amazing shape. I will definitely stay here again when I return to Port Townsend. read more

3.5 Stars Staying at the Commander's I realized I am not a BnB person. The house is very nice but cram packed with trinkets everywhere. There are so many pillows it's difficult to sit on the couch. The guest rooms are packed with so much decor that there is little room for the guest or luggage. The breakfast was lovingly prepared, very homey. Bathroom was clean, Trader Joe's shampoo. Growing up in New England, this place took me right back there. Beach themed decor throughout, casual and comfortable. Spent allot of time relaxing on the large covered porch listening to the waves and enjoying the view. Inn keepers were relaxed and friendly. Very clean and quiet rooms. I really enjoyed my stay with Gail and Jim at Commanders! The property is a beautiful historic home in excellent condition with lovely grounds and an attractive, comfortable interior. It's right on the beach and you can fall asleep to the sound of the waves and walk along the beach, or hang out in one of their many chairs or the outdoor swing (my fave). I watched a seal in the bay and saw hummingbirds, a heron, and endless seagulls. Their dog is darling and the other guests were good company. I was traveling alone and wasn't sure a bed and breakfast was the right choice - they're usually considered romantic getaways. But I didn't feel out of place and enjoyed my "me" time. The breakfasts were delicious and they did a nice job of accommodating my food allergies. All in all 100% recommend. read more

My wife and I stayed three nights this week, and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The hosts, Gayle and Jim, were friendly and personable, available to chat with or offer recommendations, but not at all intrusive. They took great care of us, and were very kind on learning it was my wife's birthday. The location is beautiful, with views right out to the beach and shipping channel. We could listen to the surf with our window open at night! It's also an easy walk to historic downtown (maybe a quarter mile), or there are several other restaurants much closer. Our room was charming and clean, and the bed very comfortable. We spent part of one day lounging; we brought a laptop to stream Netflix and were very cozy. Breakfast was yummy. The standout was orange cranberry French toast the first morning. Be advised, the food leans toward healthy / low fat options (turkey bacon, chicken sausage, lots of fruits and veggies). It was all delicious, but if you're looking for a farmhouse-style B&B you might be disappointed. (We weren't.) We would absolutely recommend the Commander's Beach House. We are locals and really enjoyed the opportunity to "get away" in our own backyard; it would also be a great spot for visitors to Port Townsend. (You can rent the whole house, too, for a full family vacation - I think that'd be a blast!) All in all an easy 5 star review. : -) read more

I am not normally a B&B type. I prefer the anonymity of a hotel and often feel uncomfortable staying in someone's "front room". But in this instance, my fears and concerns were assuaged. The Commander's Beach House is a quiet retreat situated past the harbour in Port Townsend. Our room was on the ground floor and only about 30 feet from the coastline. The owners Gail and Jim were welcoming but knew when to leave us alone and simply let us enjoy the place. I asked for a vegan breakfast on their online booking form and to be honest, was not really expecting anything apart from coffee, but Gail cooked my wife and I a great breakfast, vegan for me, with ham and an egg for her! Quiet, no seagulls zooming about, coating my car with their "output" (see The Palace review!), friendly yet sensitive hosts, comfortable, cosy and somewhere I'd visit again. This was our first B&B experience ever, but it was one of the most unique and comfortable experiences away from home ever. We will definitely come back again now we've broken that B&B barrier down! I think my boyfriend and I normally like to keep it anonymous, but we decided to go to The Strange Brew Fest in Port Townsend the day before the festival started and were finding that EVERYTHING in this tiny Victorian town was booked! Until we tried one more time by booking at The Commander's Beach House. Even last minute, we felt the prices were reasonable, especially compared to some of the other Victorian-esque B&B's in the area. We stayed here for the first time and it was okay, but not great. Our room was nice, one window had a view of the water but the other overlooked the next-door RV park. The owners were nice but not really friendly, at least not with us. They seemed friendlier with the older demographic. Also we requested no pork with breakfast and the first morning they seem to have forgot as there was bacon in the eggs. The second morning they must have remembered because we were given a substitute for the ham. Finally, there was a small worm on my knife at breakfast. Didn't want to make a big deal, so just gave it to the guy and he took it away but still. Probably won't go back. read more

We booked at the last minute, so not sure what we would be getting. This was my gfs first bed and breakfast. ( shes 41 and sheltered..story there Lol). We had a great time here. Jim and Gail could not have been more hospitable. The location is fantastic! The dining room views are through the porch doors across the garden back yard to the beach and Whidbey Island beyond. Literally on the beach, there are nice seating areas on the porch, in the garden yard, and on the beach. The brunches served by Jim and Gail were beautifully presented and tasty. When our return flight was cancelled after Harvey, we had two additional nights. We immediately decided to return to the Commander's Inn. We stayed in the Sunflower, and the Island View rooms. This was the third time we have stayed at the Commanders Beach House and we have loved every visit. This time was just after I had completed the Seventy 48 - arriving in Port Townsend via kayak, having started in Tacoma 40 hours earlier. Gail and Jim were gracious hosts, as always - when I asked if it was ok to spread out some wet clothes in the back yard to dry, Gail went one step further and actually washed and dried my soggy kayak clothes! Thanks again, Gail. The room was lovely and comfortable, breakfast was terrific. My wife and I walked along the shore (low tide) in the morning to Fort Worden and saw the bald eagle that we see every time we walk there. Plus, we love that Gail and Jim are such a part of the community - when I got up to see the 5 AM start of the R2AK, they were already there and then several guests/friends all gathered at the B&B for 6 AM coffee and fellowship afterwards. All said, it already feels like a second home now, and there is no question that we would stay here next time we are in the area. read more

My husband and I visited Port Townsend for my birthday weekend, and he booked this fantastic B&B for two nights. The Commander's Beach House is right on the water and within walking distance to restaurants, cute boutique shops, and theaters. During low tide, my husband was able to walk on the beach just steps from the house, all the way to the light house and back, 5 miles round trip! Gail and Jim were warm and friendly, and what amazing breakfasts they cooked for us each morning! Their house is charming and clean, the atmosphere so relaxing. I was gifted by my dear friend with a two night stay at The Commander's Beach House. I can't imagine a more wonderful spot. The setting is beautiful, inside and out. My friend and I enjoyed excellent breakfasts on the porch facing the water and mountains. The house is elegant and interesting, but also very relaxed and comfortable.
