Three of us went into Mom's Kitchen this am. We were hoping the food would make up for the lack of ambiance. After we got our drinks and placed our order I noticed the waiter was wearing booties. They were the type of booties that service people like the cable repairman, wears into your home to not track in dirt. I shared with him that we wouldn't be eating there. He asked why and I shared it was because he was wearing booties. He shared that was how he cleaned his concrete floor.. We offered to pay for the drinks and he said no. I got to Mick's Skillet and the potatoes looked like frozen from a bag and tasted like it. The mushrooms looked and tasted like from a jar or can not fresh. The potatoes were not cooked long enough. Even my water was bad it tasted like it came out of the hose. to top everything off the waitress completely ignored us she walked by us several times before I finally had to tell her we were ready to order. When are restaurants going to learn that fresh ingredients are cheaper in taste better. I knew we were in trouble when the menu had homemade whited out with liquid paper on the corn beef and hash you know that's going to come straight out of a can. Food was mediocre at best. Had the micks skillet my potatoes where undercooked. The mushrooms looked and tasted like they where canned. Food was bland and unseasoned. Sure there's Katrinas, and maybe a few other places, but generally speaking, the situation is pretty grim. the thing is, there's more to a great brekky than an unbroken hollandaise. One of the awesome parts about a proper breakfast, is when it is served with personality. Let that work as a segway for me to talk about my new favorite breakfast place... Mom's kitchen. Firstly, the food is very well made. Is this whole foods? No, there is grease involved. But, it is clearly made with love and a real desire to please the customer. IE: they care. Secondly, the waiter, perhaps he's the owner? Has to be one of the coolest, most down to earth dudes around. Was in with my mom today and he had us both in stitches, I cannot tell you how much his kind, friendly, fatherly attitude made a difference in our day. we've had mornings where we wanted breakfast and just didnt know where in town to go... now we do, and we will be back. First time going here, it looks empty they really need more tabls or something in there . Saw all ot the tables have napkins stuffed under them and covered with possibly from mopping and leaving them there to balance the tables. I tried this called mothers sink or something its a skillet. The potatoes were not fully cooked and only one side of the patatie looked as if it ever touched the grilled same with my pancakes , they grill tomatoes for this which come out very soggy . So i sent it back and they brought me a new one and clearly they put frozen potatoes into a fryer so the outside is brown and the inside is not cooked yet again , i will never go back here and they gave that whole " i have never had this happen before " but clearly it has from reading these other posts . I have upgraded this review now that I have eaten there a few times. The service: chronically understaffed but most of the time they manage okay and are pretty nice about everything. They are also helpful in picking out something for you if you aren't quite sure. Water, coffee, and drinks are refilled quickly on a typical basis though sometimes it takes a bit. The food: most of it's pretty greasy... but it's homemade greasy goodness! There really isn't much on the menu that one would consider health food but they aren't trying to be a health food joint. The atmosphere: Well... it's not great but it's not terrible. They do tend to play a lot of John Tesh radio which I can tolerate (not enjoy) but may be offensive to some. I'm not a church goer but my friend, who is, said she prefers to get her Jesus on Sunday morning at church rather than over the radio while she's eating breakfast. Anyway, I eat here may be once every month or so. I usually get something to go. Also, apparently the grits are really good if you like grits. I don't but a friend I took her really likes grits (she's from the south) and says they are amazing! ***The review grade is pending actually getting to eat there*** First impressions count big for me, especially for a new place that has just opened. And so far I'm tremendously disappointed. I love little local eateries, especially ones that serve good old-fashioned "American" food. They are just more fun and I feel better supporting something locally owned. This place has been getting ready for a while and I eagerly anticipated its opening because it's in an area of town where there is literally nowhere else to eat. They are only open for breakfast and lunch so it would be hard for me to get there since I'm a late riser. But one day I miraculously was able to go. I grabbed my friend and we checked it out, not really knowing their exact hours of operation. We pulled in anticipating a closed sign but were delighted to read open. We see the hours posted as open until 3pm. It was a little before 3 but we tried it anyway, since most places I have been to their closing time is actually when they stop taking in new people. Figured we didn't have anything to loose. We walked inside and place is empty except for employees. We take a quick look around. Old black and white photos on the wall and red and white checked table clothes five it a bit of a homey feel. But I can't quite shake the feeling that someone set up a bunch of picnic tables in an old cell phone store. Or that it was country picnic day at the retirement home. It just felt... a bit institutional. We stood there for a couple of minutes as a couple of employees talked to a gentleman (we thought he was a patron, turned out he was another employee). No one said hi, or looked at us, or acknowledged us. Soon this fellow left and the lady behind the counter said they had just closed as they only serve breakfast and lunch. Okay. I get that they were getting ready to close. And if she had acknowledged us when we walked in and said "Hey guys! Sorry we just closed but please come back again!" I would have been thrilled and had a pleasant impression. I get that, I really really do. For this place to succeed it is going to need to develop a very loyal and reliable local following. It isn't near any of the tourist attractions and does not have much curb appeal. For it to survive it is going to have to be by word of mouth alone. I would think the owners of the place would be a bit more proactive about engendering goodwill. I will go back for a couple reasons. One, I still want to support the local guy when I can. Two, good food can make up for a bad attitude. Three, maybe I just caught them on a bad day at a bad time. read more

Great food from the most friendly (and hard working) owner who personally takes your orders and keeps filling your coffee cup for as long as you want to sit and talk or just look at the hundreds of pictures of moms that decorate every available wall space. All the breakfast dishes are delicious and this is a place that will stuff even my bottomless brother Paul. You can't find a better early bird breakfast for $3.99 anywhere. The buttermilk pancakes are light and oh,so good (coming from someone who never orders pancakes!). And they serve up a great gyros at lunch time. Yes, the owner is Greek and he serves up quantity and quality with gusto! Highly recommend for locals and those traveling through Auburn. VERY easy on and off freeway. Friday December 07, 2018 My wife I had just left the DMV in Auburn, CA. We got up real early to be in line to be in and out. All we had time for that morning was Starbucks coffee. Ann Sarah and I were starving for a good breakfast, since we are not from Auburn, we did not know where to go and as we left the DMV and proceeded down Nevada St. Low and behold there was 'MOMS KITCHEN' . The best decision my wife and I ever made As soon as we walked in the front door, Mick the owner, greeted you as if you were a family member invited to his home. You could feel the warmth immediately. He asked both of us after being seated at a table, what we would like to drink. Ann said water and I said coffee. He said he had just brewed a fresh pot, and boy was I so fortunate, that was the best tasting coffee I have ever had even surpassed Starbucks. For breakfast I ordered 2 eggs over medium, real potato hash browns, (good sized portion) that were nice and crispy, and to die for linguica and 2 nice and fluffy pancakes. Alone with all the trimmings took half the table. My wife ordered 2 eggs, over easy, sausage and hash browns with toast, a standard breakfast but she really enjoyed it. She said it was the best breakfast she had in a long time. And the food was cooked perfectly. Moms Kitchen is named adequately. It reminds me of a time that use to be. Great home style cooking, adequate portions at a price so reasonable, you would think it was from days of the past. I asked Mick for a menu to go and he gave me a restaurant menu. And I was finished with my many cups of fresh brewed coffee, I read the menu from front and back. I was so impressed with the variety of items for breakfast, and sandwiches, hamburgers and salads. I can't wait to go back and order the Ruben grilled pastrami , with grilled onions, sauerkraut and swiss cheese on grilled rye bread. I would have sent it all back but it was close to closing and I had no time (& no patience) to deal with it. Mick and Dana have a good thing... or had, going.
