Mom's Kitchen, located in Auburn, CA is just like the name implies, as this family owned and operated restaurant serves "comfort food," just like mom used to serve at home. It's also dedicated to mothers from all over Auburn, and greater Placer County, as the walls and shelves of the spacious dining room are decorated with countless photos of local moms, from many gold country generations... As you enter the restaurant, you'll be greeted by a white board with the daily specials. You'll no doubt be impressed at the photos of many generations of local moms... there must be a couple hundred photos of moms decorating the restaurant. The dining room is large, with high tables around the walls, and lower tables in the center. Each table is set with an array of condiments, including two flavors of Tabasco sauce, ketchup, mustard, salt, pepper, jam and dispenser of maple syrup. Mom's is serious about breakfast! Most of the walls are painted a cheery white with red trim, and are decorated with hundreds of photos of local moms, going back several generations. The restaurant truly lives up to it's name. From the "Breakfast" section of the menu, I went with "Classic Breakfast," with hash browns and sourdough toast as my sides of choice. If you're not in the mood for hash browns, you can order country potatoes, and instead or toast, you can choose between grits or pancakes. How many restaurants in Auburn offer grits on their breakfast menu? I ordered my eggs fried sunnyside up, and they arrived perfectly, as per my order. The slab of hash brown potatoes was cooked to a perfect, medium golden brown on the outside, with the perfect amount of "crunch" for some of the outer layers. Inside, the potatoes were a perfect, tender, chewy white, just the way hash browns are meant to be. The two slices of sourdough toast were toasted perfectly, with melted butter covering each slice, which makes for a superior piece of toast. This breakfast was very simple, on the light side, but it was just what I had in mind for this Thursday morning, as I was in the mood for a light breakfast, and my "Classic Breakfast" was simply perfect. The portion size was perfect, the price was right, and the food was truly delicious. Add it all up, and you'll enjoy an amazing breakfast at Mom's Kitchen! I've been a regular here for a few years now since I work so close by, the food here is fantastic, the service is top notch, and the atmosphere of the restaurant is endearing. The menu might not have as many options as a place like Denny's or Applebees, but it blows their quality out of the water. Off the road and across from a car repair shop is an unassuming breakfast & lunch joint. A round, red sign has "Mom's Kitchen: Breakfast & Lunch" in white facing the road on its brick wall. Inside is an expansive white walled - lined with bright red trim - where a variety of mom photos hang. It's a peculiar sight to be watched by so many motherly smiles and stares, but that's part of its theme. The cashier sits to the back left where the kitchen can be seen through the order-up window to its left. Seating is all to the right of the entrance. Short red-checkerboard topped tables are placed in the center of the grey floor while some taller tables line the windows. We were greeted with a smile by a employee who did triple duty as the main bus-person, waiter for every table, and who'd occasionally man the cashier. A laminated menu held all sorts of All-American dishes like scrambles, benedicts, pancakes 'n' waffles, and sandwiches for lunch. The potato pancakes seemed interesting. What came was a large plate occupied mostly by two large hash-brown-esque potato pancakes, a bowl of fruit, and two saucers - one with sour cream, one with salsa. By itself it had a nice, subtle, savory, potato-y flavor mellowed by egg and I believe some cheese. Add some of the sour cream and mild salsa, and you got a good start to the day sans the usual pancake or bacon. Not quite a latka but still quite delicious on its own accord. A nice thing to note was the quality of the fruit salad. Tangerines, apples, and bananas all put together but thankfully without the slime found some places. Overall, it's a pretty good place to nab a bit of comfort food housed in a peculiarly themed place with armed with friendly staff. For the price, it stands as one of Auburn's better options. I was getting my car done at auto n smog and i saw moms kitchen and decided to go there while I waited. Literally the most comforting experience ever, it was JUST LIKE when I was younger!! It's such a special and personal experience. As it should be. My meal was delicious, service was excellent, perfect experience. You can't go in here expecting it to be like other diners/restaurants where it's impersonal and short, it's a family kind of experience! To the people leaving reviews about "being touched". The guy you're referring to has always been like that. Like I stated before, it's a personal and family type experience. If you feel violated with a hand on your shoulder- go touch some fkn grass. Grow up. Stop victimizing yourself every chance you get and try to be an adult. People in 2022 are little babies. I don't know how you function in normal life if a hand on your upper back/shoulder sends you into a spiral. These 2 recent reviews on here of the girls flipping out are insane. The owner touched me then kicked me out when I told him to stop. The owner comes over to me checking on my order, as he does so he runs his hand up and down my arm/front of shoulder/where it meets my upper chest, rubbing it. I don't know exactly how long but my partner said at least a couple seconds. I'm super uncomfortable, so I tell him firmly "please don't touch me." He looks at me like I did something wrong. My partner then says "it makes her uncomfortable." I'm left thinking that this person is definitely going to spit in my food, and still feel super uncomfortable and violated. I give him my order again and he walks away. My partner asks, "Are you ok?" I respond, "No." A few seconds later the owner turns back, pointing at both of us in a menacing manner, and yells something along the lines of "you can leave". My partner and I were pretty stunned, and the guys restates "You, get out! Now!" He repeated himself maybe one more time. I'm shocked that after what he did he had the audacity to kick us out (not that I wanted to stay at this point anyway). I was still stunned and angry as we stood up to comply and admittedly didn't have full presence of mind, and as we exit, I yelled at him. I wish I could have actually had the mental capacity to figure out what I should have said. Some people noticed what was going on but it happened so quickly that no one at my table was really aware of what happened. I wish I had called him out in front of everyone. I would have said, "You touched me, I told you not to, and you have the audacity to kick me out!" What kind of person does that? If he did it to me, how many others has he done it to that didn't feel they could say anything? I know it's hard to do anything in those situations but please stand up for yourself. Don't let this guy and people like him get away with it. I wish I had enough to press charges because I would have in a heartbeat. read more

I can't speak to the quality of the food. The coffee was not great black but that's a side note. After ordering, the server came over to clarify something and placed his hand on my partner's shoulder, rubbed it (for longer than might even questionably be acceptable) in a way which made her uncomfortable, and she told him firmly "please don't touch me." We were told to "get out!" when my partner asked the staff not to touch her. EDIT: I just got an email from Yelp HQ which starts like this: "We're writing to let you know about one or more complaints we've heard about your review of Mom's Kitchen...." So it sounds like one of the people managing the digital piecemeal presence of Mom's Kitchen not only kicked us out, but also doesn't want us to speak out about how we were treated. Par for the course I suppose. I'm going to add as many corroborating details as I can. Yelp HQ knows from my location that I was in the parking lot of Mom's Kitchen when I left the review. We were in a party of 9 unless I missed one. Two other members of our party left with my partner and I. I ordered coffee, but was disappointed so I let my friend drink it (he's less picky than I am; and I acknowledge that I'm picky). I generally don't go out of my way to leave negative reviews because I know the effect it can have and I know there's already a bias. My partner will be the first to tell you I'm likely to leave a good tip even on a mediocre service because I like supporting small/local businesses. This experience was REALLY that upsetting. I can't ever recall being yelled at by who I think was the business owner, and I've never been kicked out of a restaurant before. I stopped recently for breakfast. When I walked up to the front door I noticed that the front window was really dirty and I could not see through it. When I touched the door handle to open the door it was sticky and I instantly wanted to wash my hands. I went in anyway and stood in the entry waiting to be seated. It must be the owner who greets you, runs the kitchen, serves your food, buses your table, and rings you up at the end. Nicest guy in the history of nice guys. Best service you could ever ask for. How's the food you ask. Have a salad and ask for the homemade ranch dressing. Amazing! And have whatever is on special. Today I had the Gyro and homemade potato salad. Weird combination? It was my first day at my new job today and my car was in repairs so I took public transportation. I was walking and came across Mom's Kitchen around 9am. I was greeted and seated immediately as I walked in. I got served my coffee and glanced at the menu. I pleasantly surprised that they have an early bird menu which was exactly what I needed. I ordered eggs, sausage, hashbrowns and toast. The food was delicious and the portions were not too much food nor too little that I finished my whole meal. The ambiance and decor definitely gave me a family friendly feeling. I felt like I was at my grandma's house for breakfast. It really helped my anxiety on my first day at work because both the customers and staff were so friendly. I will definitely continue to support this business! read more

It is hard for me to say this but I'm not sure if it was the fact that we were the only people of color (Latin and Asian) or if the guy just didn't care. Just a couple days before eating here, we ate at a franchise breakfast 'house' and the food was so bland and the pancakes - chemical. Not at Mom's kitchen!!! The pancakes were fluffy, sweet and tastes homemade like when I was little! I could have eaten a 5 stack...but I digress. They actually cook the bacon to your preference too!
