Delicious Taiwanese sausage with sticky rice 大腸包小腸; very authentic 鐵板牛排 steak on a sizzling plate; tried their hot pot 小火鍋 for the first time which is nice on a cold evening. They offer Taiwanese popcorn chicken with basil leaves, 鹽酥雞, very good. Various bento boxes such as 滷肉飯, all very authentic. Food was good; ambiance was homey as usual. But the service (a sole waitress) was not welcoming. She just wanted to get us out of here. No smile either. Many items are already out (they probably do not restock, seeing that they are wrapping up anyway). Location is of course off the grid with no real public transportation. We got some takeout as well; beautifully packaged and presented takeout bento boxes (see my photo). For dining in, the bento box is also beautifully presented. However, for whatever reason, popcorn chicken and appetizers all came in paper boxes rather than on plates even for dining in. That takes a bit of the special feeling away. read more

How does this place not have better reviews? The food was delicious! My friend and I got dinner here a couple Mondays ago, and I was shocked that we were the only diners while we were there. To be fair, Momo's Cafe is a bit out of the way and hard to get to (for us, we have to drive through Georgetown on M Street), but it's worth it! TAIWANESE POPCORN CHICKEN - 8.95 The chicken was salted and peppered perfectly, crispy but not overly so. The chicken itself was juicy and tender. This really hit on a rainy day, and I could hardly focus on the conversation with my friend because I was pre-occupied eating the chicken. I could not ask for a better Taiwanese popcorn chicken. BRAISED PORK BENTO - 11.50 This bento came with a lot of food, where 25% of it was braised pork over white rice. There were some sides like sauteed napa cabbage, a bit of pickled vegetables, steamed corn, and an odd assortment of Chinese sausage, fried tofu, and half a tea egg. Everything was good. The braised pork was fatty and juicy, and the sauce was a bit milder than I'd expect, but still flavorful. The sides were all homey and not too over-the-top, which was what I wanted. The corn was cooked with butter and clearly came from a can, but it hit home because that's how my grandma used to cook for me. So I'm not sure if anyone else would like the corn this way, but I did for nostalgia reasons. Also, the prices are actually reasonable?? Everything went without a hitch, and in hindsight, it was in no small part thanks to the staff, especially the one at front of house. It was clearly right after a lunch rush when we came here for the first time in a while, and all of the tables were either occupied or had yet to be cleared and cleaned. The front staff quickly cleaned a table near the front door and we sat down to find out that not only do you scan a QR code to look at, but order from, the menu. I thought it was efficient of them. Without further human interaction, we ordered and received two braised pork bento, and the staff even brought out cups of water without us having to ask. I'm usually wary of bento boxes but they really impressed me this time. The pork was juicy and one of the best renditions we've ever had, and the other elements were carefully prepared and at had at least some level of warmth to them. The marinated egg and fried tofu were worthy of gasps, the sweet corn was a nice touch, and the single slice of sausage was a treat. I just wish we had double the amount of... well, everything. Payment can also be completed using the app/browser used for ordering, but I didn't have access to Google pay. Still, the staff helped us pay at the register without trouble. Nice to have a Taiwanese street food place, but I found the spicy pot to be packed with sodium and what seemed like processed meats, spices and additives, and the veggie miso ramen was lacking in flavor and the noodles weren't very chewy or springy. The best item here was the popcorn chicken which was crispy and tender. The bento had a good mix. It's a hole of the wall. On hot days the A/C is somewhat weak. May be better for takeout. There aren't many Taiwanese restaurants in the area, so when we heard of this one, we had to try it out! This mom and pop shop is serving up some great comfort food. The popcorn chicken was crispy and juicy and has a great seasoning. The bento boxes were also really tasty as if your mom made them. The shaved snow ice was alright, but made for a cool picture. Parking was a bit hard to find, but luckily we found some street parking not too far away. Stepped into this small, cute cafe and we were warmly greeted by the staff. Placed our order and waited not more than 10 min before our food arrived at our table. We ordered the bento box and a side of popcorn chicken. All of it was delicious. We drove all the way from Virginia to have their tea pot dessert, however we were sadly disappointed. Besides not having the dry ice effect that they showed off on social Media, it is also a lot smaller than advertised. Furthermore, they used cheap take out plastic bowls instead of the cold- retaining metal bowls, which defeat the purpose of a refreshing, cool dessert. To add salt to the wound the server didn't seem happy to be there. We also tried the braised pork bento, braised beef bento, and the popcorn chicken bento... all of which were just mediocre. The popcorn chicken was half scorching hot on top which is expected, but the other half on the bottom was cold. Black pepper sauce pork Bento box was mid. The spicy braised beef noodle soup was seasoned well, but toppings were lacking, considering I requested for extra. Closer to 4.5 than a 4. Growing up in LA there were a TON of these places around so when we came to Mimi's Cafe for lunch it felt like a blast to the past. They have very standard Taiwanese bento boxes which were done very well. Portion sizes are comfortable and every single component of the dish is properly seasoned. Will definitely be back to try out other bentos and there skillet entree. The popcorn chicken was perfect. The black pepper chicken and braised pork were super flavor and we walked away from the meal extremely content. Only complaint (which I feel like you can complain about most places these days) is the higher than expected price. What an underwhelming experience. Wife wanted to try it, so I gave in since we live in the neighborhood. Wife ordered a pork broth pot. For the amount they charge you think they will give you a little more meat. Flavor was fine, nothing special. He asked my wife if she wanted the flame under the pot. She said yes. A few minutes later we asked the server to turn off the flame because the broth was dissipating too quickly and he remarked, "but you wanted the flame." Like seriously? I ordered a spicy beef noodle soup. When the order came out, he gave me the non-spicy version. Told me to just add hot oil, and his attitude hinted a bit that it was my fault. As an avid fan of Taiwanese beef noodle soup, I know that the spicy version has a different seasoning mixture, not just "add oil". He didn't seem to care, so I just decide to try it. First of all, there was so little broth in the soup. Within a few spoonfuls, it was just noodles. The few slices of beef they gave me was so dry and overcooked, that I barely ate any of it. It was almost as it was frozen then reheated it for the customer. The sour radish that normally gets served with beef noodle soup was freaking sweet! Might as well been relish for a hot dog. The noodles itself? Felt like it came from a pack of well cooked packaged dry shin ramen from an Asian grocery store. Worst of all when we got the check, it stated "spicy beef broth"! At least edit the check after indirectly hinting that I order incorrectly. I understand that this wasn't a full service restaurant, but there was not one instance he asked if everything was ok, even when he saw the all left over food as he handed us our check and when he came back for the payment. The popcorn chicken was a bit of a saving grace, but by that time, I was already so disappointed with everything that we just took it home. Awful service with mediocre food that is overpriced for the quantity and quality of food. Just goto Rockville or Bethesda if you want decent Taiwanese food. I felt like I was robbed when I left. I got the spicy momo dumpling soup-- "Jhal " (spelling?) The dumplings were absolutely delicious in flavor, texture, and density. The flavor of the soup broth was complex, picant, and wholesome. The soup would be IDEAL for a cold winter day or comforting when you're feeling under the weather. I was not a fan of the texture of the all the tiny minced up bits in the soup, which occurred to me as unpleasantly gritty - BUT that might just be my personal texture quirk (picky due to unpleasant associations). This one dish by itself was more than enough for a solid meal, it filled me up quite a bit even though I was extremely hungry and I am a big man! I've been to Taiwan twice, and I can say that the food here is authentic. My friends and I dined at Momo's Cafe for Sunday night dinner. I had the Braised Minced Pork on Rice. The pork was savory and seasoned perfectly. The egg complemented the pork, and the rice tied it all together. I also tried my friend's popcorn chicken, which was exceedingly good - better than KFC in fact! Despite the stellar food, the service here is incredibly slow. There was only one person in the front manning the register, handling orders, and making the drinks. He was very hard working and thorough, it was just that the restaurant is short-staffed. This meant that when we first ordered drinks, it took around 25 minutes for us to get our drinks. WAY TOO SLOW! By the time a seat became available, we had already waited 45 minutes. I've got to let you know that I've got a crush on you... If this were a game of cards, the hand that Momo's dealt me would have been a Royal Crush. From the moment my eyes locked on their beautiful drinks and delicate desserts, I knew a visit was a necessity in the near future. The Oreo Cookie crumbles sat atop and once I broke the service with my SHOVEL SPOON (yes, another highlight) it was evident how nicely the crisp crumbles complimented the mildly sweet milk tea. I actually really loved it. Also, everything is so cute here. From the patio seating with IG worthy back drop, to the little accents in the shop, I loved it all. Plus, the young woman that helped me decide what to order was so incredibly nice (and was not at all judgmental about simultaneously indecisive and excited I was!) Even though I don't live terribly close, I'm going to make sure I work Momo's into my rotation whenever I'm on Georgetown or driving through The Palisades.
