For those unfamiliar, Compass Coffee is like the local version of Starbucks. Out of all the local coffee shops, it's home to the most locations across the D.C. area. Started by two veterans, Compass has weathered some bumpy roads over the last few years with leadership, splits, and unions. That said, this location is quite large. Ironically, it's close to a Starbucks in Spring Valley in Northwest D.C. Walk inside and order a pastry or one of their many coffees. Their almond butter latte is among my favorites. The actual space is large with plenty of seats from tables, booth seating, to high top tables. There are plenty of outlets and strong free WiFi. Restrooms are in the very back. read more

I religiously patronize the Spring Valley Compass Coffee every morning. I mean EVERY morning! ...and it's by far NOT the closest coffee shop from my home! Of course, I've tried the 4 others that are closer and on the way. But the atmosphere at others? lacking. My 4-shot-extra-dry-almond-milk-macchiato? Meh.. at the other places. But I think it's the people and community that really tip the scales. As soon as the Com-Coff door is ajar, Morgan (one of Compass Coffee's finest) or any of the other baristas greet me by name. Other regular customers I meet there have identical sentiments. The staff is efficient, quick and work with grace; and sometimes with a bit of wit ... even despite recent the occasion(s) when there less a barista or two. :) read more

The service was good. I ordered ahead on the app a pumpkin bread with icing to go. This location is huge and busy! Best to order in advance and pick up. It took 15 minutes from order placed to order completion. The staff were friendly. I'd come back, especially with all the ample seating and free Wifi. Love the backstory and military founding, routinely fantastic coffee. They have a granola and yogurt food item I like too.

Holy hell this place is a horrendous scam and terrible in every conceivable way. Some of the staff seem alright but my god the rest is an absolute horror. Comically overpriced goods, lack of transparency (no way to see the full menu), shady practices (no receipts and exact cash only or upcharged, shielded from signal with a public wifi that requires accepting spyware) - the interior isn't horrible but nothing great either. You wouldn't get into a kidnappers van just because it looks "okay". Used to like Compass as a brand but wow have they gone to the dark side. Avoid like the plague. Hopefully they improve things or go out of business so something better can take the place. read more

This cafe is the best hangout place on this side of town. It's even better when you can find a table and chair! I got here right at 10am for my daily cappuccino and the service was awesome as usual, but finding a place to sit and chill wasn't so easy. This place is huge compared to some of their other places in the city, but still its usually jam packed led in the mornings. Soon enough though I found a spot at the cafe bar and proceeded to open my laptop and check emails. It's really chill here, and everyone here is super nice. On days when it's not so hot and humid, it's also fun to take a seat outside. They also make a kicking expresso, and their regular coffee is also good. read more

My favorite coffee and my favorite coffee shop, especially when nearby American University is in session, with lots of AU grad and undergrad students drinking coffee and studying. Everyone who works here is friendly, and it's a great place sit with your laptop for an hour or two. Cozy seats around the fireplace! On weekends it feels a bit different. Lots of little kids in soccer uniforms. And goldendoodles. Many, many doodles in Spring Valley. But a great coffee shop anyhow! read more

This is my second visit to this Compass Coffee. Honestly I was already very much looking forward to make this stop. It is very convenient for me that they stay open until 6 pm as I have much writing to do after work. The open area inside is very spacious for a coffee shop and there is plenty of seating. Other patrons seem to be taking advantage of the ambience and thus they are taking time reading or using their laptops while delicious coffee is enjoyed. I did not have to wait long in line after stepping in. The young woman who took my order for an iced quad breve mocha was very kind and polite and professional. The coffee is very good here and I also see that they offer a nice selection of pastries. The restrooms are clean as well! I'll be coming back for certain. read more

Although Starbucks is only 2 doors down and may have a bigger selection of coffee drinks and pastry items, I much prefer Compass Coffee because of friendly service and good selection of seating spaces. I don't have a very complicated name -- at least in my opinion-- but I've had my name mispronounced or misspelled all my life. Just with the effort of having my coffee cup with the correct spelling of my name alone sold me. And the staff was so friendly and polite about it!!!!!! The decaf iced mocha cold brew was delicious. It had just the right amount of sweetness and the bitterness of chocolate and coffee perfectly complimented each other. I just wish it didn't have such an odd gritty aftertaste but otherwise the drink was made just right. I also appreciated how the cup wasn't mostly ice. The Almond Butter Latte is a must have! I have never been able to drink any coffee without any sweetener - until I met the Almond Butter Latte at Compass. So. Good!! I also enjoy the cold brews and matcha latte but the almond butter latte is in a class of its own. The baristas and staff are so friendly, so warm and always entertain my requests for drink referrals. The shop itself is large with plenty of seating, clean bathrooms and plenty of parking out front. I caught up with a friend for two hours one Friday morning, and this hip, bright, tasty coffee shop was buzzing the whole time. We could barely find a seat around 10:15am. (The spot was less than half full by about 11:30/noon.) A lot of thought has gone into the space. I always appreciate a spot that has many different seating options, like very comfy seating in the back, a kids area, a few tables, high top chairs at a bar, and lower tables toward the front. (I wish the stools in the front were a little more comfy, though.) The people working here all seemed very cool, chill. They chatted but maintained efficiency in handling the bursts of customers. The coffee was good! I got a smooth latte with skim milk, and it was on point and made quickly. I look forward to my next opportunity to come by. read more

Honestly pretty disappointed in Compass Coffee. For how popular and well known they are, I was not impressed with the coffee here. I got the Cherry Blossom Cold Brew, which considering it's advertised as a cold brew, had minimal, if any coffee in it. It also definitely does not look like the advertised photos. If I wanted strawberry milk, I would have gotten this drink. My partner got the honey lavender latte and it was, again, minimal coffee and overly sugared. The shop is also very loud on weekends and not conducive to studying if that's what you're going for. However, decor was great and there was plenty seating and many outlets. Overall, great socializing spot, but if you want good coffee, look elsewhere. read more

The coffee is delicious and a little bit expensive. I was there at closing time as a thunder storm rolled in. They shepherded the former customers out to cling to the face of the building under a small overhang. Rain blustered around punctuated by the occasional lightening burst. While rain worked it's way into my shoes, I could see the employees inside polishing the counters. We often get a glimpse of each other character when we are drawn off script. The employees of Compass Coffee did not cause the rain storm, they merely watched as their customers got soaked waiting for summer storm to abate. read more

This is an awesome location of Compass Coffee and very convenient to get to. Parking is a pain in front of the store but the coffee experience is worth the pain! I like the quality of beans sold at Compass Coffee and we do stop by for a drink every time I am here to pickup beans. My go to drink is the nitro cold brew and my wife gets the cappuccino. Both drinks are generally made perfectly and worth the trip! They have done a good job managing traffic with social distancing enforcements. Staff is friendly and always willing to help! read more

On Friday, Nov. 3, I ordered a delicious cappuccino at the Compass Coffee while visiting the AU campus on Mass Ave. in DC. I do not use credit cards for small purchases, so I paid cash for my $5.94 cup of coffee (granted that the price of coffee anywhere is ridiculous but that is not the point). The pleasant cashier informed me that he had no cash to return the $.06 I was owed. While $0.06 is not going to break me, it is the principle that Compass Coffee just stole my money. There is no reason that businesses in the U.S. should not honor cash transactions. What about all the folks who can't qualify for credit cards (granted, they may not be drinking $6 cups of coffee but, yet, again, this is not the point)? I regret that I now have to find a competitor who handles cash transactions and may, unfortunately, serve less tasty coffee. read more

I was a faithful Compass customer until recently, when I saw their quality in general go downhill. They don't answer emails, and they hire unimpressive and sometimes unprofessional or rude people. I often went to this location, but yesterday, around 3:30 PM, I was served by someone who answered my question about pastry availability (I had asked if they still had ham & cheese croissants) with "whatever's in the window is what we have". Gee, thanks, but I can't see/know what's in your window. Also, answering customer questions is literally your job. She also didn't know the caffeine content of a certain drink (I was trying a new one compared to my regular drink, so I didn't know), and, when pressed for an answer (I'm pregnant, so caffeine content is very important to know), she acted inconvenienced and said "well, I mean, I guess I could ESTIMATE"...You don't know what you're selling? Also, FYI to management, neon-green nails and cheap yoga pants are not a good look for your baristas in this location. The other barista was equally unimpressive and uninterested in helping. She slapped my coffee on the counter and walked away. None of them gave me a smile or welcomed me to the shop, as baristas had done in the past. I have been frequenting this location for around 1.5 years now and there's many reasons I keep coming back: excellent service, great coffee, and an ideal study environment. My favorite drink (which was sadly discontinued because it was seasonal) was the Cherry Blossom Latte! It was the best drink I have EVER HAD. I hope it will come back next spring. For now, I settled with the fall Maple Latte and the regular Nutella Mocha Latte. My only faults with this location is the increased pricing and the music choice. The smallest latte is now around $6.15 after the summer 2022 price increase. The music choice is also a bit abrasive at times and not the best for studying or chatting but that is just personal preference. Either way, I will continue being a loyal Compass Customer! Gone down. Great space especially at non-peak hours. But a woman this morning with unsanitary hair, not tied, but long, handling food items is a no. I will not even mention the attitude with no smile, hello, or eye contact. I felt she was disgusted by her job and even more me as a customer. Another customer requested from another employee Whole Milk kettle to be refilled, after hand it to her, it took about 5-7 min to hand a new one to a line of customers waiting. Part of the new strip of stores along Mass Ave in Spring Valley, Compass Coffee brings a long-overdue coffee shop with ample seating to the Spring Valley neighborhood. The pluses: a nice selection of well-prepared coffees, including some nice dark roasts and lattes. I love that they have a well-stocked play space for the little ones! The minuses: I don't find the space to be all that inviting, with too much seating crammed into too small a space. Seek out the table in the far back corner (by the bathrooms) for a little more quiet and the natural light from the windows. The baked goods? Not so much on my several visits, tossing most of my very dry coffee cake into the bin this morning. The staff? Efficient but not particularly welcoming. Is it worth stopping by for some strong coffee while in the neighborhood? Sure. Is it worth making a special trip for? Probably not. read more
