They have New York Times Washington Post stunning array of periodicals available on an almost archival basis if you want them it's here plus they have used books and occasionally a little dog. Amazing!! So glad I found this place online. I live on the west coast and was looking for a copy of the previous day's Washington Post (no newsstands near me stock it, I called them all) so I finally called The Newsroom on a long shot and the man was so friendly and helpful, set up an eBay listing for it and texted me the link to complete purchase! So many people these days just want to brush off any requests that mean extra work for them, so it's always really appreciated when someone is willing to go above and beyond to help you out. The Newsroom is THE place to buy newspapers and magazines in Washington, DC. The store is massive and well stocked with current and recent titles. There is a wide selection, including materials from the local DMV area as well as selections from around the U.S. and the world. Not only is this a great shop for buying papers and magazines, but the owner is incredibly kind and thoughtful. When I started a new job recently and told him about it, he was so excited and bought me a magazine to celebrate the occasion. I don't have a lot of family in the area, so his kind action absolutely made my day. It felt like getting a hug from my mom! I have never been in the store as my husband and I live in Texas, but we have had numerous interactions with the owner, Stephan. The world is a better place with small dedicated business people like Stephan. He serves the Community by preserving the printed pages of foreign and domestic newspapers and magazines. Without people like him the large corporations would be dictating everything we read, see, drink and think. Ours is a love story with the printed word. My husband archives actual articles from "in the moment reporting" to maintain documentation of current events so as to guard against the future, when Corporations will surely rewrite history to their own advantage, as Orwell predicts in his book, 1984. The Newsroom takes customer service to a new level! My boss asked me if I could access a specific article about our company on NYTimes.com. It wasn't possible with my "buck-a-week" subscription. I asked around but nobody had the 2.5 week old edition we were looking for. Then someone said "try that newspaper store at S and 18th." A quick google later, they answered the phone and said YES! My boss (and his boss... and HIS BOSS!) were so pleased. He went dashing over, but we had provided the wrong date. "No problem. We have the next day, too." Then they called back because they found more and offered to deliver? We are in the media business, so we think we've found our new favorite newstand going forward. They were great! read more

This place sells souvenirs from Washington D.C., including shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, etc. As you walk in, the place looks like a convenience store, where they sell coffee and some convenience store stuff, but as you look around, you notice a shelf full of Washington D.C. trinkets. From shot glasses to key chains to plates. In the back of the store are shelves of T-shirts, sweatshirts and jackets with Washington D.C. interests emblazoned on them. The clothing is separated in different qualities and are priced according to that quality. There were shirts priced 4 for $20, etc. Although convenient, the street vendors located downtown had better priced merchandise for the same quality of clothing, so all I actually purchased from this place were shot glasses. The worker was an Asian guy who seemed, when he wanted to, not to understand much English. Wasn't very helpful or friendly. Good thing about this place was they opened early and stayed open until fairly late into the day. Right down the road from my hotel, so rushing to buy souvenirs was not on this trip, baby! All in all, average rating for this place due to the prices and the "friendliness" of the employee. read more

Someone gave The Newsroom one star because they thought it was closed??? That's not a Yelp review, folks. That's just thinking out loud. So I am giving The Newsroom four stars to balance out the crazies. It's a perfectly good magazine shop that used to have more reading materials but fell victim to iBooks and Nooks, etc., like every other bookstore. That said, it still has foreign language bits and bobs upstairs and greeting cards. And there's free wifi. And, if you've got family or friends from out of town, there are touristy cards and t-shirts, etc. By the way, the staff there have always been nice to me -- so weigh that against the one-star guy who thinks they're rude. "Say Hello to Bilingual Books!" says the poster by the register at The Newsroom. Say hello to hundreds of different foreign-language newspapers and exotic French fashion magazines. Say hello to empanadas, scones, and other vaguely international baked goods, warming in a glass pastry case. The newsroom is also a cafe. I was originally attracted to this shop by the Tin-Tin children's books in the front window--particularly the Tin-Tin episode called "The Shooting Star", which features a hilarious cover, with Tin-tin and his dog gaping at was is unmistakably a gigantic polka dot psychedellic mushroom, sprouting on a beach. This particular copy was faded by the over-exposure to the sun, having sat in the store window, and so I asked for a discount. No dice--it was still $17.95. Upstairs, I found the same book, in perfect condition, only in Spanish: "La Estrella Misteriosa"...I will hold out for a good English copy. Overall, this place has a pretty weird feel to it...how do they stay in business? The upstairs "internet cafe" is merely a couple of business desks and a display of French maps, in a bare, carpeted room...at least is has a lot of sunlight and a view of Connecticutt ave...but you'd think they could find a better use for this space. read more

When nursing fantasies about living in a foreign city become too much, I sometimes wander in here and thumb through the decent (although not excellent) selection of international magazines. French-language publications seem to get the best representation, although they're often months out of date (with no visible price reduction, which always strikes me as a bit odd). They have all the tourist goods but also a decent selection of foreign papers and obscure magazines to cater to almost any artsy fartsy taste. This Newsroom is a go-to place for foreign magazines. They still have one of the better selections of foreign newspapers in town, although those are getting harder to come by since papers just aren't distributing as widely as they used to. Still, you can get LeMonde, Le Figaro, Guardian Weekly, Arabic-language newspapers and others. On request they will print out any paper of your choice from a list of about 400 foreign newspapers. It has a great magazine selection in all major categories, domestic and international. Everything is well-kept and well-organized and the service is great. It's also a deli and a gift shop with tourist trinkets and T-shirts. read more

Awful! Avoid at all costs! I'd give it 0 stars if I could. I went in looking for a magazine that had put out three different covers. They didn't have the one I wanted, and the clerk was annoyed that I asked if they had the others. There was a big stack of the magazine still wrapped in the shipping plastic and he refused to open it to check. He also was skeptical that the magazine actually had different covers. Isn't that a fairly common thing for a magazine to do, and, as someone who works at a newsstand, shouldn't he be familiar with the practice? And why would I just wander into a newsstand asking for random covers that don't exist? I've bought magazines there before, but whenever I go in they're beyond rude. I've spent money there! I don't treat it like a library, spending time reading and not purchasing. It's a shame because they otherwise have a good selection of magazines that can be hard to find at a bookstore, and newsstands are kind of a dying breed anyway. People are buying magazines less and less, choosing instead to read them online. Knowing this, and considering a big section of the store is devoted to magazines, one would think they would be a little more accommodating to people looking to spend money. Maybe they're making enough from their overpriced sandwiches and tacky DC souvenirs to justify their attitude. At any rate, I will never shop there again. read more
