A bit of a delayed review (just haven't had time to post this) but Momo House was at the Jade District Night Market. I ordered their Choli Curry Plate which was a chickpea curry with two vegetarian momo's. It also came with a sauce not pictured. I also got a mango lassi also not pictured. Food came out quickly and staff were very nice. The chickpea curry was delicious but there was a lot of rice. I wish there was more curry to mix it with the rice. Pretty good dumplings (momos), likely not made in house, the sort you get from a frozen pack, large and very uniform and quite doughy. Because of the cold weather we went for the momo soup (good broth) and the choli puri, which was a couple pieces of flatbread and garbanzo beans in a thinnish tomato sauce. Our order was in person, at the food cart, carry out. What drops the review down to three stars is that when we were asked if we wanted a receipt and we said yes, we got a receipt through text that listed an additional charge of nearly a dollar (3%) by Square. Makes no sense since our order had nothing to do with Square. Since we gave a healthy tip, the extra charge wasn't the sort of thing to make us look forward to future visits to Momo House. It was our first time trying Tibetan / Nepalese cuisine, so we were super excited. However, both the dishes that we ordered, Choli Puri and Choli Somosa, were underwhelming. Choli Puri: The bread had good texture - fried on the outside and chewy on the inside. It reminded us of a fluffy, fried tortilla. Choli Somosa: The somosas were bland and forgettable. Both dishes came with beans, yogurt sauce, and green sauce. The beans were bland, which was really disappointing because they looked delicious. Loved this place so much! I came down from Seattle because I was missing Tibetan food. The owners are very kind and everything is made so well. We ordered the Beef moms (steamed and pan fried), pork chow mein, chole puri, and mango lassi's. A new friend (and his dog) had the chicken chili and was super happy with the taste and portion size. I got bold and had the Momo soup. Think Chinese dumpling soup, but better. Authentic tibetan flavors in a clear broth with veggies on top. Add the hot sauce for extra flavor. The dumplings are a little doughy but that's the style. The friendly and efficient proprietress suggested I try one of every kind: pork, beef, chicken, cheese and veggie. Great option. This is a difficult dish to master, but the spice and overall flavor were on point, and the portion was ample. Unfortunately, their were a couple of big rock hard pits (maybe olive) in the mix. I'm not a fan of chicken drumsticks in rice dishes as its very difficult to eat them by hand without a big mess. And you exert too much effort trying to scrape the rice off the chicken when eating with utensils. It's 5* for yum hot samosa and cilantro garlic chutney. For veggie momos 5*. I tried the steamed momo option. It comes with cilantro garlic chutney and red hot chutney and side salad. It was the perfect a blend. The momo's outer layer was so soft and it had a melting taste. I just gobbled them in no time. Everything was very fresh and delicious. I'm obsessed with dumplings. Always have been. Years ago I had some decent momos in LA, but wasn't hugely impressed. For me, there's only one way to assess a dumpling: put it in your mouth without sauce. If it needs sauce to taste good, it's not a great dumpling. And so I followed the routine with Momo House's Pork and Beef pan-fried dumplings (I'm also a sucker for potstickers). I can't remember ever eating a more deeply flavorful dumpling on its own. Don't get me wrong: the sauce is great (especially the green one). But it's NOT necessary. Can you make that statement about, say, Din Tai Fung? No way. It's all about assembling your own personal accompaniments. But all of their actual dumplings are on the bland side. This was my second visit. Every bit as impressive as the first. This time I added in the pork chili with fried rice. Another hit. This isn't chili as in Mexican. This is sliced pork in lightly spicy seasoning with veggies (I'm guessing the lovely folks who run the place would be happy to crank up the heat if you asked). Beautifully flavored. And the fried rice is just spectacular: fragrant and just a touch sweet. One small warning: The large beef dumplings aren't like soup dumplings, but they have a bit more liquid inside. I say large because they're right on the edge of too big for a single bit. With my first, I tried to bite it in half. Drippings sprayed all over the place. You've been warned.
