I've been wanting to go to DesiPDX for a long time now. Heard about them after dining at Masala Lab multiple times before it shut down. With how good the food at Masala Lab was, I knew this place was not to be missed. Finally made it there a few days ago. Spoiler alert: they did not disappoint. My partner and I decided to get two dishes so that we could share two different flavors. We ordered the Masala Pulled Pork and the Butter Chicken 2.0. We got them as a plate, with the pickled veggies and salad. Both dishes were absolutely delicious, and the dressing on the salad was an unexpected yummy bonus. SO GOOD! Cute little cart in the back of the pod. I got the seasonal dhal, and it was fantastic and not too expensive. I always look for good flavor and seasoning in Indian food and they knocked it out of the park with their flavor and textures, especially in the side dishes. Wow! The blend of textures was great, the chutney was spicy and delicious, and the rice was perfect. The curry itself was yummy but could have taken some punchier flavors. I'm usually pretty skeptical of fusion cuisines but am a fan of the flavors here. I've tried the Lamb Kale Keema, Masala pulled pork, cardamom chai chicken and the goat curry and was a fan of all. U can taste a hint of Indian flavors but it's different w/ some new spices and garnished w/ some herbs, saffron rice & pickled onions for some color & flavor. I'd say the lamb Keema & goat curry were my favorites (goat curry is special this weekend only), goat tasted like it had some African flavors. The owner also had an Indian brunch spot that closed down recently but he said he would be bringing some of those dishes over to Desi. Located in the always bustling Mississippi pod. read more

Of the different Indian fusion I've had, this by far is the best one. Kalaunji keema and cardamom chicken are my favorites. The bowls come with side of pickled veggies which complement really well with the spices. It's located amongst other food carts in the area. And the parking there can be tricky. But the food is worth it. I wish they were open longer hours, and have more stock of different items on the menu, so that we can try more of their food. read more

I wanted to come here after seeing it on Somebody Feed Phil. I got a Veggie Thali Platter which was delicious. I get Indian food a lot and this was very unique compared to other Indian food I've had. This place was recommended by a friend. The past few years I have grown tired of ok East Indian food and usually don't choose it. The flavors at this food cart changed my outlook! The chai cardamom spiced wings were unique and well spiced and very flavorful. The tandoori chickpea tempeh had crunchy bits and a lovely mint raita that went with it. The kalonji kale keema plate (lamb and kale) was so delicious, one of the best meals I had on my trip to Portland. It was served over rice with their housemade assorted pickles. The textures and flavors of everything on the plate worked well together. The lamb was seasoned so well, but nothing was too rich or overpowered one another. I had been meaning to try this cart out for a while and even though I visit this food cart pod numerous times , I just couldn't ever get a chance to try them out until recently . At a busy location like this its hard to find a spot to sit sometimes and with curries and rice dishes as their prime focus you need a dedicated space to enjoy a proper meal . I felt that adding a few more appetizer or smaller meal options would be a good idea for conveniance and also because a lot of people want to try multiple things when they come to a food cart pod . Since I was sharing with friends -I got an order of the Chai Chicken which is made with drumsticks brined for 24 hours and then steamed in tea, deep-fried in rice bran oil, and coated in a coconut sugar-based tea glaze. The chicken was cooked very well - it was soft, juicy, and tasty. However, I personally could not taste the chai flavor at all and the marinade predominantly tasted sweeter like a mole. Tasty stuff! One of the carts in the Prost marketplace. I tried the Kale Keema with Lamb and it's pretty flavorful, plenty of ground lamb in the serving as well. The fried garlic added a nice crisp and nuttiness to the dish. You can opt for a smaller bowl or a bigger plate with sides for the entreés. Service was fast and easy. I got the butter chicken katsu bowl special and it was fantastic! The crunch of the breading on the edges of the chicken slices was delightful (and not something I get to experience often as a fully gluten free person) and the butter chicken sauce was dreamy. It had just the right amount of heat for me, and there was the perfect ratio of rice to chicken in the bowl. I'm so glad I got to try it. This was my first time visiting the cart, so I'm not sure how often the dish is an option. I highly recommend it if you get the opportunity to try it! read more

I only had one issue with this place which was that there were no posted hours that I could find. But I do want to say that once they opened I was very excited to order my food. You can't help but notice how colorful all the food is once you open the box. The orange pickled onions and turmeric mustard slaw were really yummy too. My wife was especially fond of the Kalonji Kale Keema. She thought the ground lamb and kale served over the rice was a great way to eat it. She also thought the flavors were really on point as well. I absolutely loved my Chicken Tikka Mole. Very tender bits of chicken thigh served in a deep rich mole sauce. I could have eaten a whole trough of it. Probably one of the BEST hidden gems in Portland! Everything is 100% gluten free and the chef is such a nice gentleman! I had to get a second plate to go cause the food was soooo good! The first thing I ordered was the cardamom chai chicken & my girlfriend ordered the lunch special butter chicken katsu. The flavors were so rich of spices for both and the green sauce to top it off is sooo refreshing and tasty! I liked this meal. The side sauces - cilantro serrano, tamarind date, and cranberry black cardamom - punched you in the mouth with flavor and I wish the dhal and thali platter had done so too. So if I had any critique to offer, it would be that I wish the flavors in the main dishes were a little stronger? The food is simply wonderful! I'm partial to the Kalonji Kale Keema Bowl which never disappoints. The ground lamb has the id texture and is perfectly seasoned. The portions are always generous. Last order they ran out of the fried chickpeas and offered to sub with the fried chaat masala potatoes. Will definitely include the potatoes on future orders! read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a while and was excited to finally check it out. I was feeling very indecisive and heard a voice through the chaos pronouncing keema is what's for dinner. The folks at the food truck were friendly, and the food came out pretty fast. The flavors were really rich and perfectly spiced from a spices standpoint. I probably wouldn't have minded a little more heat as a personal preference. I thought the dried cranberries in the rice was kind of odd, as I didn't think it needed much sweetness. The rice itself seemed really oily, but it could have been from the keema. Regardless, it was easy enough to pick out the cranberries. Tasty food overall, and I'm glad I tried them out. read more

If you are looking for traditional Indian food, you won't get it here. Desi pdx has some variety options that I haven't seen much in other Indian places. We tried Cardamom Chai chicken, kalonji kale keema (keema is made with lamb) and pulled pork masala. There are alacarte options and if you want to skip rice that's an option too. The chai cardamom chicken was like nothing I've tasted before. It was so obvious that it was marinated for 48 hours as stated, because the flavors were so vibrant. The worst Indian food I have ever eaten anywhere in the world!! I grew up on Indian food. This is awful. My food was expensive cold and the Tandoori tempeh really had no taste. They threw a bit of tempeh over some under cooked cold rice and threw some sauce over the top, it came with a side of Indian style cabbage that was slightly better than the tempeh. this is definitely not a place to try Indian food. I left my food mostly un eaten for $18 wasted my money. I told the server it was cold and had no flavour and he said " sorry , tough break" and went back to cooking. read more

The menu might look pretentious or inauthentic to some, but trust me, the flavors are spot on. The chutneys and pickles are to die for. They have an interesting menu with options for all kinds of dietary restrictions. I have tried their tempeh curry platter, and tempeh has never tasted better. The cascading chai was unbelievable. I spent a lot of time researching and planning my trip here specifically to try it out but ended up underwhelmed. The restaurant was in a pod with several other restaurants, and my son and friend got food at Fried Egg I'm In Love while I waited at least 20-30 minutes for Desi PDX to open. The guy who opened up seemed less enthusiastic about answering questions. I ordered the Methi Mirchi Shrimp, which was a dry preparation of the shrimp with rice. The shrimp itself was cooked well but had I known it was a dry dish, I would have tried something else. As an Indian, I tend to be a bit more discerning about food and think of my mom's home-cooked shrimp dishes that rivaled restaurants. read more

I would come here again! You know it's good when they season their rice. I got the Kalonji Kale Keema plate and it was sooo delicious and flavorful. The lamb is delicious and the vegetables are fresh. They top their lamb with fried chili and I would buy a jar to bring home. I recommend getting the plate instead of the bowl so you can enjoy the vegetable condiments (the bowl does not come with the condiments). The staff is friendly and kind too. The Chicken Tikka Mole was sold out when I came so I hope to try it. It seems like a popular dish. Really loved the cherries and spices. Portions were plentiful. Enough for four meals for us. We only wish they had Tandoori chicken in addition to the tempeh option! Personally, the tandoori tempeh curry lacked authentic tandoori flavors and spices, and the dhal was just okay. For $22, I was hoping that the food portion would be bigger as well. read more

We came here with the intention of getting Matt's BBQ but the wait was too long and they were beginning to run out of food so we decided to check out this place instead as the menu looked interesting. We got the sampler platter which include a small sample of everything they were serving that day which was nice - it was the last sampler platter of the day too , so we lucked out. The sampler platter included some pulled pork, shrimp, lamb, a tempeh, rice and other sauces. Either we were hungry or everything was delicious. The shrimp was especially my favorite. It was so full of flavor and cooked perfectly. I also love the green sauce they had, it has quite a kick in terms of spicy. The only critique I had was that I wish they had naan bread or some sort of bread to soak in all the sauces we had left. I really crave good Indian food in Portland. Desi pdx hits the spot. Not your regular butter chicken and paneer makhani. I have tried chai chicken, methi shrimp and chaat. All are BOMB.com.
