I was so happy when an Indian grocery moved into Gateway. This place has been here for awhile now, and I probably come in once or twice every couple of months for both hot food and spices. My friend and her son came over last night to make Rasam, so we were off to shop! Let's start with the hot food. It's great and there's usually 2-3 veggie curry options along with the usual chicken tikka, butter and both regular and garlic naan. Reasonable price at $12 an entree w/rice and it's a full clam shell of food. Al la cart, is I believe a bit more pricy if going by plastic container. But is still less spendy than a restaurant. So if you need some good to-go, this is the place. Oh, and free chai tea at the counter while you shop! The "sit down" space that I've seen, Is a hit or miss as I've seen it both open and full of boxes for storage, so maybe they just open it at certain times of the year, I wouldn't count on it. The grocery side is amazing, has everything you could possibly need, except the fresh veggies in the front can get quite picked over if you don't go early. Not so pro-tip, but there's more veggies in the back area, like curry leaves and fresh herbs. Great frozen section with about a million naan and samosa selections and ready to eat food. Spice prices here cannot be beat, I can usually get out of here with everything for my spice box, for about 15-20 bucks and lasts forever. Check out the small cart by then cash register, if you don't need a pound of cumin, lol, as they also now sell small qualities for a few dollars or less. Which if you don't plan to make Indian food everyday, is fantastic! The store is pretty packed to the ceiling, so be prepared to browse around and do some hunting--if looking for chutney or other jarred items, the end caps can kinda hide them. But, if you need it, it's there. They have a small parking lot right before the door, so make a hard right. Otherwise, it's the street and with the busy liquor store and bar, and the semi-new (last few years), street changes, there are less spots and it can be little--well stressful with all the Gateway traffic. Totally check this little spot out, love supporting these local folks, brining a taste of India to the neighborhood. read more

Food smells great and offerings in buffet are extensive, just for Take Out. After spending $1000+ on saris, the wife of the owner was really rude when I wanted to try on a necklace set to go with the several saris I'd just purchased. She told me that I can only try on the necklace if I could guarantee that I was going to purchase it. How can I know if I would like to purchase a necklace set without trying on the necklace? Zero flavor on any of the dishes we ordered. The butter chicken honestly was so bland, flavorless. The chicken was also beyond dry. We got another chicken dish and the chicken also had no flavor & was drier than a bone. Like chicken jerky. We were so disappointed!! read more

Wow! I was so lucky to be in this neighborhood today and find Namaste Bazaar. From reading previous Yelp reviews I knew they had groceries but I had no idea what a fun experience this was going to be. They had an entire section of Indian suits, jewelry and slippers. The store space is shared 50/50 with a company selling beautiful clothing and foods from Tonga. It is very clean, open, and spacious. I met a few owners and employees who were so friendly and welcoming. But the absolute highlight was to see the cooking/dining area. I ordered my lunch and sat down to eat. I was in heaven! There is nothing like authentic, homemade food from women who share a kitchen space together :) I hope no one was looking while I was eating because my face was ridiculous, it said it all, lol! I take the time to drive out to this location from Milwaukie When I need authentic East Indian ingredients. It's sort of off the beaten path. They also carry some ingredients for West African foods. The isles are small but full of unique items. The cold case at the front has a variety of beverages. Come with a list of specifics, load up and go home with cool snacks. read more

Interesting store. I have been in a few times. I have been tempted to try some of the food but after seeing this today I am not sure I want to come back. I was parking my car in their side lot. They were unloading food from a truck and then putting the food directly on the sidewalk. Please see the attached picture for proof. This place seems much smaller now compared to the posted photos from a year ago. They do carry a limited selection of Indian grocery items along with some clothing and accessories. But the real reason for coming here is the restaurant area. It serves some pretty good Indian food. The gravy in my navratan Korma was tasty. There is a small seating area. For a grocery store that makes fresh food the quality of the food is very good. We had the chicken vindaloo very spicy which was very flavorful and aromatic. The lamb vindaloo was also nice. I didn't have to drive to Beaverton or further out to find some Indian spices and ingredients that I needed to make my Korma curry dish. They had everything that I needed, I got fresh curry leaves that make a big difference in terms of flavor. I found some Indian blogs online that I follow of some lovely people from India showcasing their delicious recipes online. I also got some mango pulp from their freezer to make mango lassis. There were a bunch of ingredients that your local grocer won't have, but thankfully Namaste carried everything I needed. The food looked pretty tasty, but seeing as I was there just for grocery items, I didn't have a chance to taste the food, but I would definitely try it the next time I am on that side of town! read more

Tikka Masala is a go-to of mine. (I know, I'm basic). The food was underwhelming. The masala didn't have a great flavor... it didn't really have much flavor. The large chunks of chicken was tender enough, but dry. The garlic naan was soggy and under baked. Perhaps it was just an off day, and I might give them another chance if the stars align. Great deal for the money! I got two veggie sides, butter chicken, rice, and a mango lassi for $11. Food is not made to order so it will arrive at your table in five minutes or less. If you are looking for a really quick meal then this is the place for you. In fact the server described their food as "fast food". It definitely is that. The highlight of my meal was the butter chicken (very tender and juicy), rice (perfectly cooked with pomegranate kernels sprinkled on top), and the mango lassi. I took a star off because this is the most bland Indian food that I've ever had! I didn't see any sauces on the counter next to the self-serve plastic forks and napkins or I would have used it because other than the cilantro and raw onions sprinkled on top the food was almost tasteless. Also it was a little weird that there was no music or any other sound except for the server playing on her phone two tables away from me as I ate.... Another grubhub delivery. Man, was I hungry when I ordered from this place. One chole, one paneer, aloo kulcha, paratha, and samosa combo. I am majorly pissed because of the amount of food coloring used in the gravies. The chole was primarily a weird red-maroonish color and the paneer stained my fingers yellow. I am indian and know how indian spices and food coloring differ in staining. This was all food coloring. Seriously, definitely should skip this place. read more

Definitely a hidden gem in Portland! After exploring all the famous and delicious food destinations, a mere tourist like me would've never expected to end up here. Actually, we wound up here by accident after visiting Multnomah Falls and needed a late lunch at 3pm. Don't let the environment fool you. It's in an open section of a small Indian grocery store, where at first glance everything looks pretty cheap or run-down. But the lady at the counter was really nice and greeted us when we entered (there was almost no one here, since it was mid-afternoon). The menu has a good selection, and everything is vegetarian. Mehran got the TIKKI CHAAT, which is probably the closest representation of meat...or what I meant to say is that it's just as good as meat. The spices are really well blended and the protein texture is spot-on. Sherry got the VEGETARIAN DELIGHT with 3 different sauces/curries. Our favorite was the one with peas/potatoes, chickpeas was a safe choice, least favorite was the daal. I ordered the SAMOSA CHAAT and that was the best samosa I ever had. It had a flaky crunchiness and good filling-to-shell ratio. Both the Tikki and Samosa Chaat included a ton of ingredients - protein, chutney, other things I don't recognize - there was so much going on but it was so good. The portions are really generous and the dishes are ~$7. Such a great deal! Also, I recommend ordering a MANGO LASSI. It's by far the best I've ever had (and only $2)! read more

This is the best $6 lunch I've had in a long time, and probably the best Indian food I've ever eaten. I like Bollywood Theater, for example, but this is so much better at half the price. I am the only person eating lunch in here right now. I feel like this is a great undiscovered place. If it were closer in, I think the line would be around the block. I was staying at a nearby hotel and the desk clerk recommended this for Indian food. I chose to ignore the other reviews and try it out. I regret it. The "spinach" lamb was awful. I assumed it was Saag lamb, but it wasn't. The spinach didn't resemble any saag I've had. The meat didn't taste like lamb. The paneer pakora was okay, but I've never had it before so who knows if it was actually paneer pakora. The garlic naan was awful. How do you screw up naan? It was inedible. I live somewhere you have to drive 60 miles for Indian food, this was over 100 miles and I was so disappointed. If it weren't for the cute toddler I would rate this one star. read more

So after coming on the bus from Multnomah Falls, there was some commotion on the MAX so the line was shut down. We decided we were too hungry to wait for a bus to get us to downtown so we decided to eat near the station instead. And that's how we ended up here. I'm so glad we did! I was very skeptical that the food wasn't going to be good because I've had some stellar Indian food in my time. This place really hit the spot! We got the aloo tiki and chole bhature. Often the bhature tends to be too oily but here it was just right and the chutneys for the aloo tiki were spot on. Also the owner was super friendly and accommodating. Frankly, we're so happy to have an Indian market in NE Portland that they probably could have overcharged us and called us ignorant yuppies and we would have smiled. Instead, they were friendly and very helpful -- and very obviously a family business! They saved their yelling for each other. Namaste Bazaar is 1/2 Indian street food deli, and 1/2 Indian market. The market is medium-sized, consisting of four aisles of groceries and a back wall of freezer cases. Like most isolated ethnic markets, most of their stock are items which are dried, canned, or frozen. They carry little produce: really just a handful of herbs, and a strange selection of low-quality produce sold "by the bag" dirt-cheap. On the other hand, if you need to buy 5lbs of fresh ginger, this is where to get it. Here's what the market has lots of: * dals (legumes) and grains in bags from 2lbs to 10lbs, three different brands and probably 13 different kinds * basmati and other Indian rice in bags up to 50lbs, maybe 20 different brands * "masalas" (spice mixes) for every Indian dish you ever heard of, and then some * enough different chutneys in jars to induce option paralysis * an entire aisle of Indian snack foods in bags * a half-aisle of Indian cosmetics and soap * tons of frozen foods, including complete foods like kati pouches, ingredients like pre-made vada and idly, and breads of various sorts One of the few things which was surprisingly scant was raw spices. Anyway, the shelves weren't quite full, and I suspect that as the business matures (they've been open less than a month) they'll fill them up with more goods. The deli is basically Mumbai street food as far as I can tell. It's entirely vegetarian, and consists of around 12 different options, many of them fried. The deep-fried spiced cheese (Paneer Pakoda) was especially good, as was the Tika Chaat (fried potato patties covered in chick pea curry and "salad"). And the chai, as is proper, is free. So we got two big bags of groceries, and enough take-out for the two of us to make pigs of ourselves, and paid $77. So this is a great place to come if you want filling spicy food on a budget. The curries are pretty authentic and taste good but the biryani is horrible! Bordering on unpalatable, the biryani was grossly under-seasoned and was anything but a 'lamb biryani'. Who puts barely-cooked chopped tomatoes and onions in a biryani? Seriously??...might as well throw in some lettuce, cucumber, white sauce and call it 'Indo-Mediterranean Lamb over Rice'. This place is so LEGIT! Though there's no shortage of Thai/Japanese restaurants in Portland, I've been on the hunt for affordable, delicious Indian food. Well, I definitely found it. This place has an amazing array of traditional Indian dishes on their menu- it took what felt like forever to choose what I wanted. I went with my go-to dishes, Lamb Biryani and vegetable samosas. The lamb was so tender and delicious, the seasoning of the dish was fantastic, and the take-out portion was very generous. I made three meals out of it! The filling of the samosas was so incredibly flavorful with the perfect amount of heat, a slow subtle burn on your tongue. My partner ordered a chicken curry dish and it was also seasoned well with tender, generous pieces of chicken. We topped things off with their garlic naan, which was thin and perfectly seasoned. This small business is worth your dime. Next time we will eat at the shop (it has a small seating area). Overall, a really impressive place! Note: If you order the Lamb Biryani, watch out for the occasional clove or peppercorn. Their presence wasn't annoying, honestly just a testament to their dedication to flavor. Also, I noticed that a couple of folks based basically their entire negative 1 star reviews on a dirty bathroom. For real? I was born in India at the time Bombay the city was called. I grew up on the awesome curry and more that was their way of cooking. I just love it. This restraunt made me feel right at home again. If you haven't tried Indian food then you really should go here and experience the cooking. The owners and staff that work there are wonderful , there to serve you. I came in, ordered, went to use the bathroom and walked out. I didn't even want to ask for a refund. The plate looked just like the bathroom toilet. Both toilets were filthy with bodily waste as was the walls. Nothing was wiped down or dusted or had been in a while. Just looking at the plate was terrible. It consisted of a heap of plain rice and 4 chicken chunks in a flat gravy. I don't know where everyone else's pictures came from but it is not what I was presented with. I have come here to grocery shop when we first moved in the neighborhood and found everything so easily to make tikki masala. It's my first time trying out their deli and it is so yummy! I tried their butter chicken and it was delicious. Huge portion of curry and rice for only $7. My friend and I shared and only ate half and are both so full. 1st time going in here after changing companies to a business in the area. Happened to Yelp for a good lunch spot and this place came up. I happen to love Indian food so it was a natural choice. I went in and I think they could tell it was my 1st trip in. So the sweet girl behind the food counter asked me "is this your 1st time here?"
