I don't judge books by their covers, but this one opened like a bad draft that had never been edited. I will start by stating that I am not usually a fan of Indian food, but I did not object to indulge in some Indian cuisine on this specific evening. My father and I entered the chaotic massing of a building and noticed a muggy, hot, and unpleasant atmosphere. Unlike most restaurants I've been to, there was no aroma of freshly cooked food or food in general, which had surprised us at first. Upon walking up stairs to be seated we were greeted by a lady, although the restaurant did have a single customer she did not seem very talkative or intrigued by our visit. I'm not someone who expects perfect service, but some level of hospitality would have made the experience more comfortable. Once seated, I noticed that all the tables were clean, but too clean and prepared, which lead me under the impression that no one had visited all day and quite frankly I would not be surprised. When seated, the only staff member gently threw down our menus along with a statement that their prices were not updated on said menus, and we would need to see online due to the pandemic. Time does fly, yet it's important to note that the pandemic functional ended 4 years ago, and no QR code or alternative menu was provided. When asked about water, she mentioned iced water or tap water, my father made the slight mistake of saying "water is fine" and not specifying that water without ice would have been best, but then our server in a unnecessarily sharp manner proceeded to explain the difference between ice water and tap water in the manner you would speak to a child when your upset and trying to make them learn a lesson. In shock to this rude interaction my father sat there without response and the lady left. My father and I proceeded to leave after this questionable behavior. As someone who has the luxury of eating out, I will say that this service did not seem usual to me. Today, I did not only leave with an empty stomach, but a weird feeling of the rudeness and judgement from the lady that spoke to my father like he was unable to understand simple instructions. Growing up in Portland, I've been taught that if a restaurant doesn't have customers there is probably a reason, I was willing to discard my initial judgement of this restaurant, but after the horrible customer service I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone besides my worst enemy in any way shape or form. Nothing against the restaurant, any other staff, or people who enjoy this restaurant (if any) but sadly this was my experience today! read more

The ingredients are simply low quality.. no hate at all. I wanted to love it AND this place has obviously done something right. the nice woman who rang me out has been in that spot for over 30 years. Wanted to love it so so bad I got the most basic order: Butter chicken. The chicken is essentially canned chicken breast.. the butter sauce is thick and paler than I've ever seen and so creamy that it tastes like a mayo base... the only thing that made it sufferable was the texture and taste of the garlic naan.... though even the garlic that's generously spread on top is minced canned garlic. I know good ingredients are expensive but it's simply not worth serving people this kind of food. As soon as my stomach stopped hurting from the hunger of a very long day of being minimally sustained, i couldn't even bear to eat it any more of it. Ordered take out here a couple months ago I got the grilled tikka chicken breast. The chicken was a precooked. You can tell when chicken is just reheated. It was disgusting. Harder and drier than a rock. Restaurants like this shouldn't be allowed to function when they charged $20 for an entree of already cooked old chicken that gets reheated. Disgusting. Small, pleasant restaurant offering a nice lunch buffet, under ten dollars, with several tasty offerings. The Oregonian's recent ranked list of the best Indian buffets from Portland to Hillsboro got it right by listing India Grill in the top five. During our most recent visit what we enjoyed most was the navratan korma (nine-gem curry) and the excellent tandoori chicken. The other buffet items lean toward vegetarian options and were all very good. My partner was pleased that the buffet also offers a rarity at most buffets -- papadum. Good food, nice atmosphere, certainly worth a visit given the buffet's overall quality and relatively inexpensive price. read more

Two very frustrated looking people told us they had been waiting for over 45 minutes. We decided to leave. Then, on a recent Saturday night, we attempted to dine here. There was a sign on the door stating, "take out only." The door was unlocked, so we went upstairs to see an empty dining room and no one there. WTF?? Came on a quiet night. We were the only table in the house. The restaurant was clean and the servers were on top of it. Given that we were the only table, this would have been disappointing if I said otherwise. I haven't had a whole lot of experience with Indian food so I can't say how great it is in comparison to other places. Tried the chicken pakora which may sound ignorant when I say it but was very much like chicken nuggets. Also had the vegetable samosa, panera pakora, chicken tikka masala, and India thaali. The India thaali was quite overwhelming with everything that came out. The food chicken tikka masala was very flavorful. I've only had meat samosas and to my dismay they had ran out that day so I tried the vegetable samosa. It was significantly different from the other meat ones that I had tried. I am a fan of it and could see myself eating everything we had ordered again besides the chicken pakora. Everything was delicious and a new experience for me. I fairly enjoyed the food and want to venture out and try other places. read more

Used to be my go-to Indian spot in Portland (and I even moved just a few blocks aways) but the quality has gone way Downhill and prices raised way too high. Samosas are now 1/2 the size of the old ones so all dough, no filling, same price or probably more expensive. Many dishes like Palak Paneer were reformulated a few years back to be watered down or something, not sure what they did but all I know is they don't fill you up anymore, taste much worse, and cost several dollars more. The color went from dark green to light green so obviously diluted with tons of milk or cream which is a no-no in authentic Indian food. Prices literally went up several dollars per dish simultaneously with the quality going down. If the prices had just gone up I would have understood but lowering the quality was inexcusable. With something like a samosa, when you make it smaller, you change the ratio of Doug to filling and therefor ruin the finished product... Gross. So to give you an idea of how much less I like this place with the changes in the past few years, it's so close that I can literally smell the food cooking at my house sometimes, but I prefer to go to Hello India on Hawthorne (which has the most bizarre and unfriendly staff in the world but at least the food is good!). I've ordered take-out twice since the changes in the last 4 years just HOPING that they might have changed chefs and fixed the problems but alas, no :( read more

The owner lacks basic courtesy and I am surprised to see him in the services industry. I was visiting from the East Coast. The website / google update did not talk about being only takeout. We had planned to dine in. The owner does not mention anywhere that the restaurant is on the second level. Neither did he let me know the fact that I needed to come upstairs to get the takeout. When I was waiting in the foyer/ balcony where I met him, he started a verbal assault on me for not coming to pick up the food. There was no way to know from the outside that it was upstairs and it's not clearly visible from outside. All that was to be seen was a kitchen. I took my food from him only bcuz it was late and we were hungry and tired. If it was earlier in the evening, I would have given him my piece of mind and walked to another restaurant. Food ordinary. Amazing place. By far this is the best Indian/Pakistani Restaurant in town. It was my first time. I was greeted nicely and the owners / servers were extremely engaging and prompt. I have ordered Chicken Tandoori & Biryani. These 2 items are usually the key items and you can rank any indian restaurant based on these items. Biryani was just amazing, they have used the right kind of rice and it was very delicious. right off the first bite you will taste the combination of all the spices. Chicken tandoori was done right, not dry at all and had perfect color of barbq. It was just a perfect meal. There is another thing, the NAAN which was amazing. i have never had a naan like that in Portland not even California. It was perfect, fluffy and crispy, cooked at the right temperature. I used to love this place, and it reminded me of my grandma's cooking. I knew Manjit more than the average customer. I thought she was very sweet and personable. I loved the food. today on March 13 I ordered the same thing I always get. I ordered it through DoorDash and it looked completely different and tasted completely different. It tasted like cream with turmeric in it. It was so gross and not edible. Even the rice was overcooked and just tasted different. I was so disappointed because I knew how good this place used to be. It made me wonder did somebody else by the restaurant with somebody else there cooking? I don't know what happened. This used to be my go to Indian restaurant but now I'm scared. There was a time when I wasn't so fond of India Grill; mishaps in both food and service kept me pessimistic and paranoid about all future visits. That of course, was several years ago but instead of lamenting another poorly rated review, I gave them another chance recently and was pleasantly surprised that things seem to be on the up and up. First off, there are actual greetings. Not by just a hostess but by a lineup of eager servers. They were cordial and efficient, which was not the case the first time around. They refilled the waters, did a swapping of the plates, and the bathrooms were clean. I was already in a happy place. Then the food hit me (again). Samosas were a tad dry, the naan was a tad too chewy for my tastes, and the traditional chicken curry was just bland to the bone. Not much to report on the lamb rogan josh, which was equally unmemorable. There was a group wide consensus in the disappointment of the mixed grill, which included shrimp, chicken, and seekh kebabs. All were lacking quality flavor, to which we felt defeated. There were some standouts however, and dishes certainly worth mentioning. First off, the sag paneer was creamy and hearty. Chunks of paneer cheese bathing in a soft, fluffy pillows of spinach is always best accompanied by rice and a voracious appetite. The rasmalai is always a welcome treat in Indian desert land, which was in the paneer realm of creamy and just sweet enough to notice. Returns are to be merited and the prices are still so reasonable after all of these years. $8.95 buffets that include any semblance of meat is a rarity for Indian buffets nowadays, but I'm hoping India Grill continues to make improvements in all facets. read more

Well, this is unfortunate. I've ordered from India Grill several times before and it's always been good. However, tonight was different. We ordered samosas and they were overcooked. The bottoms were almost burnt. Also, when the delivery bag was packed, whoever packed it shoved everything in which resulted in the top of one of the plastic containers cracking and leaking one of our entrees all over the bottom of the bag which resulted in the bag almost falling apart and spilling our dinner everywhere. As our previous experiences with India Grill have been good ones, I am willing to give this place another try. Hopefully, this was just a one time thing and they will be better. I'm giving 3 stars due to previous orders without issue. Would give 5 if not for tonight. read more

I want to give this one star, but it's not like the food was inedible - it just wasn't really worth eating, you know? Especially compared to other indian places around the city. The location is really nice - I always like business that have adapted spaces that were previous residential. But the food just wasn't any good - it was either salty or bland, dry, a little over-cooked... just not tasty at all. Totally disappointing, since this is the closest indian place to my house, and I'd be willing to put up with a bit of not-so-good food for the convenience factor, but allow me to continue harping on the fact that the food was just not worth it. I have been here so many times, and I always love it. I often get the chicken tikka masala, which is well seasoned here, which is not bland, not too creamy and a ripe tomato flavor. I've had this dish almost everywhere I've traveled, like Dubai or London, and this is truly a good sauce. But, I ordered the Chicken Cheera. It is a green spice base. I went with a mild level of spicieness to try it without any heat. Great flavors and a good alternative. The onion kulcha as a bread instead of the usual naan and it was a good accompaniment to the chicken cheera. I dipped it in the tikka masala sauces my dining buddy got, and it was great. A fresh green spice flavor. Once again, I am really pleased with the quality of the food and the friendly service. I will definitely return again, Update: Mango Mousse Cake is divine! read more

We have gone to this place for years. It's so hard to find good Indian on the east side. Sometimes it's been very good. It has always been hit or miss, but today was the last straw. Never again. The guy taking our phone order just said, "Hello?" when I called. Then he told me I had to call back five minutes later. They couldn't make naan today, and the palak paneer was inedible it tasted so bad. The samosas had an incredibly salty crust, and the malai kofta was a runny, milky mess. I give it two stars instead of one in appreciation for the good meals we've had there in the past. We will never go back. read more

Absolutely the best Indian food in the Portland area. I consider myself well versed on the other Indian restaurants in the city, and I can definitely say that there is no comparison. The ambiance is perfect, and the price matched with the quality is almost too good to be true.
