Dumplings

While waiting for my food from another vendor in the cart pod, I decided to order some dumplings from here as I see the person making them. The dumplings were pretty good and cooked perfectly. I also ordered a black sesame rice Krispy treat and that was surprisingly good as well.

It's Dumpling Week in Portlandia and I've been working my way through the city. What a lovely surprise to find one of my favorite Portland foodies at the helm of Jamie's Handmade Dumplings, a foodcart in the Rose City Food Park on NE Sandy in Hollywood. Jamie is the former owner of one of my favorite hot pot restaurants in the Jade District, and now here she is making dumplings! What joy! Visitors will find Jamie's food truck in the rear, NE corner of the pod. She has a very straightforward menu consisting of Chinese pork or vegetarian dumplings, several versions of fried rice, and her world famous chrysanthemum tea! Her signature dumplings are featured in this year's Dumpling Week. They're made with seasoned pork, Chinese chives and fresh ginger, and sealed in handmade wrappers, then shallow-fried to a crispy, golden finish. This dish pairs nicely with the other dumplings being offered throughout the city. Jamie is a delight! She's warm and friendly, greets her customers with a great big smile, and always goes the extra mile to make sure everyone is happy. I'm really happy to discover she's embarked upon this latest chapter in her career, and will continue serving hungry customers her delicious food. If you haven't been already, be sure to check out Jamie's Handmade Dumplings!

So happy to have came across Jamie's dumplings! I ordered half order of the meat dumplings, which is six pieces for eight dollars. It also came with the side of the screen are cucumbers. The sauce is so amazing, which is black vinegar, chili, oil, and sauce sauce. It is really good! One of the best dumplings I've had. The owner Jamie was so nice and sweet!

Amazing Dumplings and Fried Rice! My Partner and I love dumplings. These have been the best we have had in Portland. The fried rice was also amazing, with the vegetables being super well cooked, and blending with the rest of the dish tastefully. You have to check this out!

I cannot think of a single thing that would have improved my luncheon experience…read more I was greeted immediately and invited to sit anywhere I ordered a $15 lunch special: Sichuan Crispy Fish that came with a mound of steamed rice and an exquisite spring roll -- crispy and packed with flavor My best decision was to upgrade for $2 for a cup of the best hot and sour soup EVER Please overlook the neighborhood and take a shot at some genuine Sichuan food Note --the crispy fish was really spicy, so don't ask for more spice The portion was so generous that I would have hade the leftover boxed, but I was staying at a hotel, so sadly had to say goodbye to at least a third if not a half of what they served me Also there were only two other tables occupied when I got there at opening time (11:00am) but it was clear they also do a brisk take out business If you want the real deal in great Chinese food, don't pass this one up if you are in downtown!

Highly recommend! The Twice Cooked Pork is a must-order! Tender slices of pork, plenty of leek, and a subtle fermented soybean flavor. The Chili Oil Pork Wontons were another favorite. The bright vinegar and chili oil sauce is flavorful and not spicy, and the pork filling is tender and well-seasoned. The Dan Dan Noodles had that classic Sichuan flavor with a light sauce that coated the noodles well. The noodles were a little softer than I prefer, and I wish there were a few more toppings, but I'd still order them again.

I've had Xin Ding Dumpling House bookmarked for over a year, so I was excited to finally cross it…read moreoff my list while visiting family. Since we had our dog with us, we ordered everything to go and enjoyed it back at our hotel just down the street. Just a heads up if you're planning the same, there wasn't any outdoor dining available. Being from the SF Bay Area, one of the first things we looked for was Har Gow and Siu Mai, but they weren't labeled the way we're used to. After asking, we found out the Crystal Shrimp Dumplings are their Har Gow, and the Shrimp Siu Mai contains pork, which was exactly what we were looking for. We ordered two of each. We also ordered two Beef Chow Fun, Combination Fried Rice, Eggplant with Minced Pork, Sweet & Sour Spare Ribs, and three pear sodas. The dim sum absolutely hit the spot. The Har Gow and Siu Mai were well seasoned, nicely prepared, and exactly what we had been craving. The Beef Chow Fun was another winner. We were glad we ordered two because we found ourselves reaching for it more than the fried rice. The Eggplant with Minced Pork was also delicious. The eggplant was cooked perfectly -- tender without becoming mushy -- and the seasoning was right on point. I'm also glad we changed our order from the House Special Spare Ribs to the Sweet & Sour Spare Ribs. Unlike many versions, these weren't battered and fried, so the pork maintained a great texture while still being coated in a flavorful sweet and sour sauce. One unexpected favorite was the pear soda. It's made with Asian pear, so the flavor is much lighter and more refreshing than the sweeter pear sodas we're used to. The only hiccup? They're bottled with a traditional cap, and since we were staying in a hotel, we quickly realized we didn't have a bottle opener. Let's just say we got a little creative. One thing I really appreciated was that the staff noticed our large takeout order and packed it thoughtfully. They included six extra takeout containers, plenty of forks, chopsticks, and napkins, which ended up being incredibly helpful since we were eating in a hotel room with no paper plates or utensils. It's a small gesture, but one that definitely didn't go unnoticed. Overall, we were really happy with our meal. This place lived up to being on my bookmark list for over a year, and I'd happily come back the next time we're staying in downtown Portland.

We stopped by Northern Flavors to satisfy a serious craving for some comforting, flavorful dishes,…read moreand they delivered on some great flavors! The service was good and the staff was attentive during our visit. Here is a breakdown of what we ordered: Hand-Ripped Youpoo Noodle: The absolute star of the meal. The wide, hand-ripped noodles had the perfect chewy texture you look for. They were tossed in a deeply savory, slightly spicy chili oil sauce and topped with a generous amount of perfectly seasoned minced beef and fresh bok choy. It was incredibly satisfying and a must-order. Popcorn Chicken: This was a bit of a letdown. While it looked golden brown and came with a sweet chili dipping sauce, it was not special at all and lacked any unique flavor or punch compared to the other dishes. Spicy Chili Oil Wontons: These were packed with flavor! The wonton wrappers were delicate, and the filling was juicy. They were swimming in a robust, aromatic chili oil that had a nice kick and a touch of vinegar sharpness. Why 4 stars instead of 5? While the noodles and wontons were excellent and the service was good, the atmosphere was a bit uncomfortable. The restaurant was completely empty when we went, but it was super cold inside because the window was wide open. Between the chilly draft and the fairly generic popcorn chicken, it misses out on a full 5 stars.
