Located in the Hawthorne Asylum, Thai Thantwan offers the most delicious Tom Kha I've had. This is the second time I come and place the same order. I wish I could bring it home with me, but I'm going to have to finish it here. The steaming hot soup is rich and flavorful and packed with tofu, mushrooms, lemongrass (I think), tomatoes, and coconut. The vegetable egg rolls are hot and crispy and full tasty as well. Perfect combination of savory and refreshing. Medium spicy was pretty spicy.. However the larb gai, although medium spicy was barely spicy at all. It seemed a little dry and bland. Definitely needed some more sauce/dressing. It was pork? Sitting on a bed of cabbage. Egg rolls were your typically egg rolls with sweet and sour sauce on the side. I wanted to try their mango sticky rice but they were out. Thai iced tea was good! It would get again.. but I'm usually not a huge fan since it's too sweet for me. We love a good Thai food truck! My husband and I have been here several times and the food is so delicious and comforting that we keep coming back! This place is nestled in the Hawthorne Asylum Food Truck pod, which is great for a quick bite to eat or to hangout with friends. We love this food pod setup. Great variety of food, gas fire pit/dining area, lots of tables in the shade, beer and wine and great decor. This was our first time at Thai Thantawan. The woman at the counter was attentive and helpful. I ordered the veggie vegetable egg rolls, Pad Ka Prao - with beef and the Pad see ew - w/ chicken. Because I was sharing with my daughters, I asked for nothing spicy. We were given a beeper which went off after about 15 minutes. We took our food to one of the shaded tables and opened everything up. It was hot and we had to wait a bit to fully dig in. The egg roles were really good and flavorful. The sauce that came with it was a great accompaniment. The pad ka prao was good and the vegetables were great. The beef was tender and the sauce had good flavor. The Pad see ew w/ chicken was really good. The noodles were great and chicken very tender. The portions were big and we had leftovers. I would definitely come back if in the area. read more

It was a wet June Sunday and my friend and I just got done screaming our little heads off at the Portland Pride Parade. I was cold and hungry and needed something warm, filling, delicious, and comforting immediately. When I saw Thai Thantawan out of the collection of food trucks available I internally screamed "Yes! Pad See Ew". Pad See Ew is always a reliable choice when you are too hungry to make complicated food decisions. Their Pad See Ew was excellent and was exactly what my body needed. I did get a little adventurous and ordered a Thai Green Tea which I have never had before. It had the wonderful creamy texture of a standard Thai tea but with a subtle Matcha flavor. Ordered vegetarian spring rolls from here among many things from a variety of food trucks. I absolutely love thai food and it is probably my favorite cuisine so it doesn't take too much to please me when it comes to thai! We were not fans of these spring rolls. They came out to $5 which was reasonable, but the flavors were so bland that we couldn't even finish half of them! The tofu was really mushy and the peanut sauce was so thick that the roll couldn't pick it up. Will not be ordering these again if I return, but maybe would consider trying something else on the menu given the positive reviews here from other yelpers :) Giving 3 stars because of the great price point and friendly service! read more

We had a great dinner with friends at the Hawthorne Asylum food trucks. After looking around at the selection of carts I chose to eat at Thai Thantawan. Their service was friendly and prompt despite being fairly busy. The pineapple fried rice with tofu was super yummy. But, unfortunately, it had a few stray bits of chicken in it. I spotted them before I dug in, so it wasn't a huge deal. I'd just be vigilant if you order anything vegetarian from here. read more

She handed me my change I put it in my pocket I came home and noticed that she only gave me half of a $5 bill and $1 bill. When she was taking out of the register she had to see that. We got the pad Thai chicken, the fresh spring rolls and the Thai rolls. The pad Thai was dry, like it had no sauce on it. It was like eating really stuck together noodles with no flavor. The fresh spring rolls were not fresh. Dry as a rock on the ends and the lettuce was already brown inside. One of the rolls had little black specks all over it, I'm not sure what it was but I didn't eat it because of the foreign stuff on the food. The Thai rolls were half warm and half soggy, mostly just mush on the inside. We couldn't eat half the food it was so unappealing and we probably only ate what we did because we were starving read more

The mango sticky rice was literally just a glob of rice plopped into a container with coconut milk poured on top and mango thrown in as an afterthought. I got the Thai fried rice with fried tofu and I can't say it was my favorite. The dish had a slightly off aftertaste on some bites and not much flavor. I recommend getting a higher spice level to add to the flavor. However not tasting amazing, the portion was very large, especially considering the $11 price tag. I ordered the shrimp wonton soup on a cold rainy day. It was out in five minutes, it cost $12, and it was worth every single penny. It was the best broth with sautéed garlic and ginger. The first time I ate here a couple months ago it was some of the best Thai food I've had in the city. I went there tonight and was very disappointed with my drunken noodle and the Tom kha. The soup was too thin and was very salty. My noodles were over cooked, strangely sweet, and lacking the heat I got last time. I ordered extra spicy both times. The service here makes me not want to come here anymore. It's progressively gotten worse over the last 7 months or so. Never been charged extra for certain things that they charge for now. They always get my order wrong even though I get curry and Thai tea. They always eat the curry wrong and I always get Thai tea light ice, they don't understand and still give me a lot of ice. It's simple little things that sometimes go a long way with the customers, especially when there's an abundance of Thai food around here to choose from.
