Dinner Plate(Veggie Thali and Curry Chicken)
    Anthony Y.

Fast and delicious street food! Located at Portland Saturday Market, Kathmandu Cafe is located in the long line of food stands. I decided to get Nepal food at around 11am with only a few people ahead of me. There were so many different things that I wanted to true at this Food Stand, but I ended up getting the 7 dollar Nepali Style Dinner plate. You order it as veggie thali or chicken curry(chicken vindaloo). The owner was extremely nice and let me do half veggies and half curry! The combo plate comes with: Rice, lentils, a cold salad, and a main course (veggies or curry). For seven dollars, you definitely get your meals worth. It was a good amount of food for the price. The rice, lentils, and cold salad are generic. If you have ever had them, they'll taste exactly as you expected it to. Kathmandu cafe doesn't do anything special with these items, but there really is no need to. The veggies and curry itself were good. The chicken vindaloo wasn't spicy as I expected it to be, but there was a good flavor to it. The chicken was also very soft and didn't feel dry at all, which is awesome. The veggie thali (Nepali spiced vegetables) was also solid. The best part of the thali to me was that the seasoning didn't overpower the vegetables. For this thali, I enjoyed how there was seasoning and spices to the vegetables but you could still taste each vegetable easily. Overall, for the price I paid and the quality of the meal, this is definitely a good value compared to the rest of Portland Saturday Market.Kathmandu Cafe deserves more attention.

It would be a good choice for kids who are picky eaters though and just want some noodles. I've seen the momo and it looks great. People seem to like it a lot too, so I'll order that next time I'm willing to try something new. I've always loved momo, just haven't had it from this particular cart and the last several times I tried a new food cart, it didn't go very well.. But the staff are super nice so I want to support their business if possible. Just a heads up if you have a sensitive stomach or are sensitive to fat content - if you get their chai tea with coconut milk, they don't use the kind meant for drinking like you get from a cafe (the kind of coconut milk in a carton). They use canned coconut milk, like you use for cooking, curries, etc., This does make for a creamier and more coconutty drink, but it overwhelmed the chai flavour and gave me a stomach ache most likely due to the high fat content. I'm just not used to drinking 24g fat in one sitting (believe me if I could, I would!). If I'd known they were using canned coconut milk for the dairy alternative, I don't think I would have ordered it. I'm sure the regular chai tea with dairy milk is delicious though, as what I could get out of the spice flavour seemed tasty. I'll update my review next time.

I'm always amazed this store is still in business as I rarely see anyone shopping there and I have stopped in the 42nd Street Station many times a year for the past 20 years. The small store is packed with clothing, accessories, books, cards and even candy, which seems random! The skirts, pants and tunics are made in different parts of the Himalayas and are loose fitting, some adorned with sequins. I like their cards, most printed on rice paper. According to their website, the store was established to support artists from the Himalayas and to provide those that are also interested in contributing to the 'Save the Artisan's Skill Project( SASP), a permanent place of access. Their website explains their products and mission: We carry handmade crafts from Himalayan Region including Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Ladak and Tibet. Some of our items are produced under the women's development project; some are from industrial development project located in Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kantipur, Kirtipur in Nepal and some are self employees as domestic leisure works. We also carry publications from Snow Lion, New York; Dharma Center,Shambala, California; Amber Lotus and Graphic Art Center publishing; Oregon; including books, calendars, greeting / post cards, note books, Paubha / thanka paintings (scroll) and rice paper prints and many more relating to Himalayan region.

I had walked by this spot a few times but had not run in for a bite until my friend said he loved getting momo here! And of course, we couldn't pass up on getting some chai either. He had dropped by a few times and had chatted with the owners as well so I let him order to his hearts content and just stayed around for the culinary ride. We got the dhal bhat, lentil soup, and veggie momo to share and he grabbed some chicken momo to go. All of the food tasty wholesome, hearty, and made with care. Definitely worth the price and effort. The chai was also boiling hot and perfectly sweet without being too much. Fyi they also have soy and oat chai if you prefer to have something non-dairy! All in all this is a cute spot, may be a biiit less ideal on rainy or really cold days, but hey the chai can help you warm up! Parking in the area is street parking and can be difficult during peak hours, but otherwise not too bad. Prices are fair for the quality so get out there and support a local business!
