Roasted duck
Austin K.

Firstly, it indeed is only one person and cash only. I came here at 5:30 and there were already 3 other parties, and we didn't end up leaving until 8:30 or so. He comes to you and explains the entire menu, and leaves so that you can think about it. I did ask about the prices beforehand and they didn't exactly match up on the receipt but different only within $2 or so. He also added 20% tip but maybe because it was for 6 of us. Also, there's no tap water so you have to bring your own beverage or buy bottled water. The only other thing is that our eyes were stinging because our table was right in front of the kitchen and I got the worst of it to the point that my eyes were tearing up the entire dinner. We got the cauliflower ($15 - surprisingly flavorful dish that I would recommend) and lamb cheeks appetizer ($17 - tender and not gamey, although the taste was plainer than I expected). He also gave us hot pita breads which were so fluffy but can't tell if that comes with the appetizer and is regularly provided. For entrees, we got the branzini ($30 - my favorite perhaps, flavored well), the chicken tagine ($20 - I've had better elsewhere on this block of restaurants and the chicken was a bit dry), beef shank ($28 - very tender, cuts through cleanly), and roasted duck ($30 - it was on the drier side for me but others seem to like it). I enjoyed the atmosphere much and the idea of a one man shop but I don't think my eyes could handle another meal here. If there was more ventilation or perhaps seating further away, I'd consider coming back.

We had an interesting dinner here. My husband, sister and father treated my son to dinner here this past weekend to celebrate his 21st birthday. I've encouraged him to pick a cuisine that interests him and I do the leg work of finding a place that can execute it well so he has a good experience that's different every time. This time, though, I picked the cuisine and went with something along the lines of Middle Eastern. Because he's on campus in Long Island with a ton of work to complete, he just came for the night. I actually made reservations for an Egyptian spot down the block but we also had the baby in tow and the place we reserved was far too small for us to fit the stroller. The owner of that establishment directed us to Mombar, another Egyptian eatery, because the size would accommodate us and the owner, Mustafa, is family. Luckily, when we arrived, there was no wait. It's very small but they fit as many tables as possible in the space. There's an open kitchen and the decor and layout makes you feel as though you're dining in someone's home. Upon first impressions, it seems cluttered but I choose to see it as eclectic and authentic. We were able to squeeze out stroller in between tables but would have probably had a more difficult time had they been busier. This is not a place where y be grabbing a bite and running out. If you come here, be prepared to take your time, slow down and really enjoy your meal, company and the ambience. Mustafa is also the chef, host and server so it's expected that there will be somewhat of a wait while all of the tables are being served. Grub Rundown: Lamb Cheeks - so tender and not gamey, seasoned nicely and served with warm pita. A must have! Sahara Mix - Babaganoush, Hummus and Fool, served with warm pita and a heavy dose of olive oil. Great for sharing and tasty. Be-Sara - Fava Bean spread, served with warm pita and so very good. Lamb Shank Special - covered in spinach and served with your choice of couscous or rice (get the couscous) which has fruit cooked in. Flavorful and spiced well. I loved it and the portion is enough for two meals. Lamb Chops - these were only ok to me. My son ordered and I tasted. He enjoyed it better than I. Steak - hubby ordered this. It tasted really good and was serve with veggies. Whole Striped Bass - my dad ordered this and loved it. He finished the entire platter. Yes. Platter. The fish was prepared for him and deboned so all he had to do was put fork to mouth. Lamb Tagine - my sister had this entrée and enjoyed it very much as it was also served with couscous. The spice situation here is on point! All of the food was really good. We enjoyed everything. They have some items for the adventurous eater such as, rabbit, lamb brains, tongue and testicle, but we kept it pretty neutral. I love rabbit but I didn't want to try at an unknown restaurant and apparently, their duck is a hot ticket item because they were sold out by the time we arrived. While I don't think I'd venture out to dine here again just because of geography, it's certainly worth a visit. The owner was so amazingly attentive to each and every patron and there were even a few regulars that came in to dine. Those kinds of diners are always a sign that you've stumbled upon a good thing, a hidden gem.

Mombar is a gem. It's a one man show with no menus. I felt like I was walking into someone's home. Really unique experience - nothing else like it in NYC and the food was incredible. Had the hummus to start and lamb shank for my main and the lamb melted in my mouth

Cauliflower Salad

This was hands down one of the best meals I've ever had. It was my first time having Egyptian and I am so glad a friend brought me here. The place is homey and cozy and smells delicious upon walking in. The owner does everything himself and was truly amazing and very friendly. We ordered the cauliflower salad and lamb cheek appetizers as well as the whole white fish and lamb tagine as entrees. EVERYTHING was exquisite! The simplicity of the cauliflower salad, the perfect seasonings in the lamb cheek dish, the homecooked feel of everything was just *chefs kiss*! For dessert, my friend ordered an off the menu baklava which was just DIVINE! Not your typical baklava, but so so great and memorable. I will be adding Mombar to my list of favorite spots! Please support this business!

Liver Alexandria

Be prepared to feel transported to Cairo. Enjoy the ambiance as Uncle Mustafa chops onions and prepares your meal behind you. While there is no proper menu, he will read off the daily menu when you arrive. We started with Alexandrian style liver and hawawshi (meat in crispy bread). We then had kushari, beef shank and molokhiya (Egyptian green stew). The molokhiya could not have been more delicious and the beef was incredibly tender. What a lovely meal, with generous portions of food and love from Uncle Mustafa

Greeted by the server, then we walked over to the fish selection area and scouted what we wanted. Our server directed us to which item we will enjoy so we let him bless us with the best fish he had in mind. Started with their seafood soup, absolutely appetizing and excites the stomach before the main dishes. This one is a must have every time I visit. Comes with shrimps, squid, mussels or clams, onions, in a savory tomato broth. One order can be shared with the table, for 4 of us we ordered 2 because the boys were hungry, but I imagine 3-4 can share one order of soup. Additional appetizers were baba ghanoush, hummus and their crisp house salad with fresh pita. Mains were the sardines, lightly fried. Branizino butterflied with the garlic lemon sauce. Order of tajine with squids and shrimps. Everything was out of this world delicious. Highly recommend this place and I will be back again!

If it was not appetizing at all, plus a terrible smell. They should use just a wet cloth and cannot spray chemicals in the air when people eating so close:( sad Also service charge is 20procent in the bill.

Out of curiosity, I decided to try a place called Taste of Egypt--the colors and design of their signage pulled me right in. Two people at the counter greeted me with so much energy the moment I said hi. I asked about the mixed grill displayed on the menu posted on the clear glass wall, and one of them explained that it includes three different meats, plus rice and veggies--all grilled. The chicken, coated in an orange seasoning, was flavorful and very tender. The beef, on the other hand, was quite tough--definitely for people with strong, full sets of teeth (no pun intended). The third meat was a sausage-like lamb, with a gamey aftertaste that almost made me feel like I could smell the lamb as I ate it. The rice was well-cooked too. If you ask me whether it's worth the $20, I'd say it's a bit on the expensive side. At $15, I'd probably go back for it.

Steinway Street is no Zamalek and I expected a no-frills experience, but we were very underwhelmed by the food offerings. The feteer itself was filled with an artificial tasting blend of American and Cheddar cheese, and was extremely salty. There are some exquisite fries being served up at many establishments in this area, but the ones at Cairo Feteer tasted like a fast food variety. The koshary - usually one of my favorite items - was the most palatable thing we ordered, but the da'ah on the side had almost no flavor, and the whole dish was lacking in flavor.

If we wanted to get a table in the main dining room, the wait was estimated to be over 2 hours (we went around 8pm), so I highly recommend making a reservation if you plan to go. The staff were very quick with service and very friendly. We were offered toasty bread with some lemon and an olive spread while we waited for our food (which also came out super quick!). We ordered the octopus and lamb chops. The octopus was incredibly tender, the meat was very soft - I personally would've preferred a little more bite to it, but it still tasted good. The lamb chops were flavorful. The medium here is on par with medium rare at most other places, and one of our pieces was borderline rare. At the end of the meal we were also offered complementary desert, which was a pleasant surprise. We enjoyed our meal overall, but just know that it's a little on the pricey. The octopus and lamb chops came out to $80~ pre-tax and tip. Would recommend if you're a fan of seafood!
