Birilla Tacos

Trying to find a great Mexican place in Clawson is like trying to find a unicorn. There ain't none. Just kidding, it's alright. Walking in, the place felt quite American for a Mexican place. Just based on the workers, the vibe (unusual for a Mexican place), which consisted of stained smooth wood and painfully boring seats and tables, but the food was all I cared about. I was craving there Birria Tacos, which were quite refreshing, stuffed me pretty quick. Not enough for me to try the Sofrito Enchiladas, SUPER salty and it had my mouth feel wet and dry at the same time. The service was honestly kinda sloppy. They felt fed up, since they are working a Saturday, but still, it could've been better. The lady that led me to the bathroom was quite sweet though. Other than that, a little less salt would do the trick. 3/5

Came here with a few coworkers. Was a Thursday afternoon and the place was empty when we walked in. I ordered the Birria quesadillas which was so flavorful and cooked to perfection. Everything we had was super yummy. Place was super spacious and looks like they had another side but was not open yet. For being the only ones the staff were not very attentive had to ask for plates and silverware/napkins after food already came. Otherwise would be back.

Food was above average and definitely worth coming here for. I'm always leery when a spot is so big if the food would just be bland but this was not the case. We had a larger party and two of us got there earlier and decided to sit at the bar as we waited. This was the only real negative; there was a bar tender who was definitely busy, but in ten minutes never once looked up and even said hello. Very awkward non interaction. But the spot is huge, tons of seating inside and outside. It's definitely a cool place for larger gatherings. Even with our larger party, food was out promptly and the chips and queso/salsa kept us busy. The fish tacos were awesome. I opted for the corn salsa on the side instead of rice and beans; it needed some seasoning. The churro and cheesecake desserts I would recommend trying. Both were great!

It's possible that this was just a bad day, because I've eaten here in the past and it's been fabulous. I ordered carryout of steak and chicken fajitas, and a side of guacamole and chips. When I got home and opened up the package, the first thing I noticed is that I didn't get any tortillas. When I opened up the accoutrements for the fajitas, everything was missing (the sour cream, all the toppings that go on the fajitas) except a double portion of white rice, and a small handful of shredded lettuce. When I opened up the bag of corn chips to eat some guacamole, all the chips were crumbled little pieces. I called the restaurant to tell them that I was missing the tortillas, the sour cream, and all the toppings for the fajitas. I spoke with the manager, who told me that Vera, our order-taker was new, and that she had already left for the day. She told me that nobody had access to her sign in, and it would take her at least an hour to figure out how to get into her sign in, to verify that we actually placed an order. She told me that I could send an email and include pictures and the main manager would figure out what to do. In the meantime, I'm left with eating the meat pieces all by themselves after paying $32 for dinner, and tipping them too! Note: manager just called. After I sent her pictures of the food, and she was able to verify it, she did a refund to my credit card. Adding a star back for rectifying service.

I really wanted to love this place since folks have told me to try it out but the queso was tasteless, chips were burnt and my bowl was not very good either. Service was slow but likely due to a new server.

The aesthetic of the restaurant is sad small town Mexican restaurant. They're in dire need of a remodel. But they have a nice patio. Sat down and had salsa and chips which was good and can't complain hit the salsa/chip craving. I ordered the tacos Mexicanos with the bean/corn salad. The 2 chicken tacos were actually pretty good. The beef steak taco was not chewable at all. It had so much unchewable fat in there was no way it could've been consumed. Bean and corn side salad was nothing besides just beans and corn.... Like no salt, lemon, pepper, or anything just imagine some canned corn mixed with canned black beans. Thats it. Service was good, our waitress was nice and timely. In conclusion- I don't think I'll be back and don't get the steak taco and bean corn salad

Service and ambience were good but I wouldn't consider this to be the best Mexican I've had in town. The rice that came with my tacos was a bit dry but portion sizes are fairly reasonable.

I order the same carne asada every time, but it's usually pretty good. Service is mid usually, which I guess isn't a bad thing. Lots of parking in front and in the back. Clawson has a lot of good food, and this is one of those places that makes my list.

Ate a shrimp fajita and quesadilla here. Both were not seasoned well and the shrimp had a very fishy taste.

There's a doorbell that goes off constantly, which could be a little much -- but it's part of the quirkiness here. Inside is bright, colorful, and very fun, though it can get a bit loud as tables fill up. I ordered the Chiles Rellenos Queso with a Classic Michelada, and my husband had the Tortas Ahogadas with a Paloma. Everything was delicious, the cheesy filled pepper was squeaky and came with tortillas to fill with rice and beans. It was satisfying and not overly filling, our table was clear of takeout boxes, but in saying that, we didn't have room for dessert. Service was friendly -- maybe not the quickest -- but I appreciated not feeling rushed or like they were trying to flip tables. It actually got busier the longer we stayed, even on a Wednesday night.

The smashed beans are good and the enchiladas are very reliable and authentic, and I overall appreciate the effort and dedicated kinda vibe it gives off. Service is usually the same guy Every time I come in with my family, forgot his name but he's always been kind to us. Not an inherently bad restaurant overall. However, almost every single time I go to this place, I always get sick a week or less after. At first I didn't think much of it, and then it kept happening, and now it's not a coincidence anymore. I don't know what kind of germs go into making the food, and trust me I get it. I've worked in kitchens that have gotten away with a TON of stuff that the customers would revolt at if ever heard. But personally, it does make me quite nauseous thinking about how many plates have been served (not just mine) with dirty gloves. Something my grandma used to say was if you find one cockroach, thats an isolated incident. If you find one cockroach, and then found another, there's probably a lot more that you don't see. Just a thought. 2/5

The people working here were so friendly and personable with literally everyone that walked in the door. The service was top notch. It is also the most adorable place giving vibes of Lamy's food counter at Henry Ford Museum. I loved all of the options on the menu and it was so hard just picking a couple items to try. We had chicken tacos. They were so good and so fresh, I loved the sauce on top. Honestly, I am not sure if it was cheese or a sour cream type mixture, but it was creamy and flavorful. I also had the torta which was absolutely incredible. It had the same chicken as the taco. The chicken was slow cooked or stewed and shredded and was so flavorful, like a homecooked chef's kiss. The bread was fresh. I loved the sauce poured over it, making it a dipped and soaked sandwich. The carrots and cilantro, sliced radishes and sliced fresh jalapenos added a level of crunch, freshness and deeper flavor profile. I would want to get this every time. We also tried their delicious "curly" fries, which were like julienned shoestring fries fired fresh. It seemed like every dish was made fresh and right in front of you. So worth it, plus the prices are great. I would love to try their fried chicken plate, their breakfast sandwiches, and their other desserts. We talked to the man behind the counter who seemed like maybe a manager. He gave us their famous chocolate chip cookie to try. It was fresh baked and delicious. I would love to take home more of those. It looked so simple but was better than many bakeries specializing in cookies alone. He also gave us an second order of fries to take home with my leftovers, just top notch kindness and service. This man told us that OWL owns other restaurants and we would probably like them. I am open to trying more of their group but I do want to return here. This is one of those diners you would find being profiled for best kept secret or gourmet home cooked foods under the guise of fast food.

I've had the torta, birria street tacos, and breakfast sandwiches, and I must say that all are SO yummy. While the street tacos are a bit small, they're still a great option for a quick pick-me-up! Service is a bit hands-off due to the space, but workers are attentive and welcoming.

Let's just say they definitely improved ! We got an order of chips and their seasonal salsa, which was roasted red pepper, and it was very flavorful and delicious. I got a hot honey burrito with beans and rice and my gf got birria tacos. Also not pictured is a marg. Hot honey burrito was a lot of food! The rice is okay, a little bland and clumps together, unlike traditional Mexican fluffy rice. Refried beans are fine. Burrito is very filled and was super sweet from the hot honey which made it a bit hard to finish, but definitely enough food, and I probably could have eaten half. Birria tacos were delish and the consumé was super rich. Margs come in different flavors but they all kinda taste the same to me so far, and they're strong. Maybe a bit too strong? Depends what your goal is with them. Service was good, a little slow for us being at the bar, but nothing to be concerned about. I had the birria tacos and I thought they were really good! The meat was super tender and the consommé was really flavorful and well seasoned, I've had some other places that were pretty watery. I think it is nice to dine in since they give you complimentary chips & salsa and huge bottles of salsa to put on your tacos. The waiters also kept checking on us which was nice. However, the place is not that big or fancy, so I understand why people might prefer taking out. My only complaint is that the waitress who took our order gave us bottled water when we asked to start with water while we were deciding what to order, and she charged us for the bottled waters later. I feel like it's common sense to give free tap water when a customer asks to start with water without specifically asking for bottled water. Despite that, I would still return. I might just skip the water or specify that I want tap water.
