Literally a hidden gem in front of Marriott Centerpoint. I've been coming here for years because this place has delicious, authentic and reasonably priced Mexican food! Great margaritas and a huge food menu. They offer great lunch options priced very well. Don't worry they will continue to fill you up on chips and salsa during your entire stay! That's the best part about eating at a Mexican restaurant. This place has been undergoing a name change for the past few months so if you see/hear of El Toro, that's this place. My favorite dish is the steak fajitas (they even offer a lunch size!) they have a great seasoning and they are such a great value. Was here for dinner with a work colleague and the set-up looked very tired and outdated, but that wasn't reflected in their food at all. They have an exhaustive menu and I picked the Chicken Fajitas ($11.49) without the tortillas and got salad instead of the tortillas. The server was kind enough to give me some extra gauc with my salad. The Fajitas were really good and had a nice flavor to them. I wish they had some spice level though. NOPE! No.... absolutely not, never again. Stopped in to see if I could find a new restaurant to recommend to my friends, I'll never be back. Service was good when I first got there, promptly took my order, food came out fast.... then he promptly forgot about me. ‍ I ordered the combo with a chalupa, Chile relleno and a tamale... it's supposed to come with rice and beans, it didn't. The chalupa was what looked like cat puke, on top of a flat hard taco shell, piled with lettuce, cheese, tomatoes and a splash of guacamole. This restaurant came highly recommended from several people and I finally had the chance to try Mi Zarape and was so happy I found a new and close dinner option! The chips were hot, crunchy, and delicious and I liked how they brought two salsas with five mini bowls, one for each person, to enjoy our own personal dipping experience. The service was quick and friendly. And the nice mug of beer was only about $3.50, and that was the regular price, not happy hour! I ordered the incredible tasting burrito Guadalajara and a tamale. Both nice portions, I had a big box of leftovers. My daughter ordered a taco and a tamale which she was able to get a la carte, which is nice since she doesn't like the typical sides of beans and rice. The menu is surprisingly big and diverse, so many choices. I hope that never changes since there were quite a few dishes we hope to try, including desserts. I've had nothing but good experiences here. This would definitely fall in the "Tex Mex" category for me so I won't compare it to local authentic Mexican places. Compared to other local Tex Mex this is excellent - and they have a few more authentic/different/fun dishes on the menu as well. I've been going on my lunch breaks they are quick, clean, and the servers are always very nice. The first time I went I called ahead and ordered ahead for dine in to be safe - but it wasn't necessary they are always pretty quick. I've had a couple different fajitas and chimichangas so far with cheese dip - it's all been great. I have my eye on the Guadalajara burrito I just haven't made the leap yet - it looks a bit heavy for lunch! read more

Mi Zarape has become the place for my coworkers and me to celebrate birthday lunches. The restaurant is a hidden gem, surrounded by hotels and office buildings (aka you can't see it from Opdyke Rd; you have to drive a bit to find it). The outside of the building gives away that it used to be a former Denny's; however, the inside has been remodeled and fashioned into a Mexican restaurant. The best thing about their decor are their tables - all of the tabletops look like scenes from a bodice ripping romance novel, and it's one of my favorite parts of going there for lunch. Their food is good. Not amazing, but good. My favorite entree is their chicken fajita burrito (which comes with queso sauce on it. They're generous with their chips and salsa, their prices are reasonable, and their waitstaff is efficient and pleasant. I've returned to Mi Zarape a few times since and find myself liking it more and more. Service was slow only that one time, thankfully. The carnitas tacos are still my favorite so far. The other day I tried the chicken fajitas, which were decent. The sizzling plate contained tender chicken, green peppers, onions, and tomatoes. On the side were guacamole salad, a slice of tomato, sour cream, rice, and beans. I am always tempted to get dessert but never have room. The dessert menu has all the usual suspects - flan, sopapillas, fried ice cream, xango (fried cheesecake). I'll start by saying it was late (9:00pm) on a Monday so I'll cut them a little slack (they don't close until 10:00pm though). They had already done a lot of pre-closing, although there were still about 6-7 people in the restaurant, and a party of 6 joined while I was eating. The Salsa was from the fridge and cold, but the chips has been in the warms, so not too bad. I order the $3.95 bowl of queso and chili, which was HUGE, but the meat had not been drained... the HUGE puddle of grease sitting on top was a bit unappetizing. Of course, it was served about about 10,000 degrees = NUKED. I also tried the Stuffed Jalepeno's. I prefer them with cream cheese like these, and they were breaded... but obviously cooked much earlier. Warm cream cheese interior, cold gooey outside breading=precooked, frozen, microwaved. My Entree arrived iterally 45 seconds after appetizers. It was literally the time it took myserver to return to the kitchen and pick it up... I had not even taken a bit of the queso and chili yet! The chicken fajitas... the chicken was okay. A little dry, but nothing unexpected. I was excited there was jalepenos in the fajita vegetables (red and green peppers, tomatoes, and onions) but it was an accident... but I still enjoyed it :) The refried beans were a weird color... canned? By no means is this a great Tex-Mex restaurant. For the food, it was a little pricey. The Margaritas are served in schooners. However, they make their living off customers from the surrounding hotels, when no one else is open. If you want some very average mexican food, and are willing to kill a little tequila... this place isn't the worst option you can find. Although I'm stiting at a 2.5, this place rounds to a 3. Will try them again when they are busier, to see if everything normalizes! read more

Glancing at the menu, the Burrito Guadalajara sounded amazing. Queso shrimp, steak, chorizo, pineapple... delicious. I thought "No, can't do it too fat." Instead I asked the bartender what she recommends. Without hesitation, you already know what she said. No turning back at that point. It was damn good. Throw those ingredients in anything and I'll eat it, but this was surprisingly well assembled in addition to that. Go for a run then go to Zarape and get this dish. *Don't be one of those whiners about pineapple where it doesn't belong either. The sweetness cuts the salt and fat perfectly. I'm happy that Mi Zarape is relatively close to me! I wish they gave you mild and spicy salsa, because the only kind they give you is REALLY mild. Good, but too mild for me. I ordered a combo plate with 1 taco, 2 enchiladas, and rice. They have among the best enchiladas and best Mexican rice I've ever had, but I was disappointed that when I got home and opened the bag, I found that they didn't give me the taco. They're relatively close, but not close enough to warrant me driving back for 1 taco. I wish I could give zero stars. My husband and I came here on a Friday night and had the worst service of our lives. I can't even rate the food because it never came. We got seated and it was a fill 15 mns before anyone came over to greet us. By that time we were ready to order so we placed that asap. A full 45 mns passed and our food never came. The table next to us ordered right before us and they were done eating and getting boxes and we still had never gotten our food. A busboy tried to clear our silverware because we had been here so long, and we had to stop him because we hadn't eaten yet. Another busser stopped by asking if we needed anything and we said our order and she ran back to the kitchen. It was clear it was never placed. We decided to cut our losses since we were not even hungry anymore. We go to pay at the counter for our drinks and tell them what happened. There was zero apologies and as we were paying a lady came running out saying "your food is ready now!" They obviously made it at the last second because they knew try messed up. Again no apology from anyone. It was way too late and she got mad we didn't want it anymore. We waited almost an hour for our meal after we placed our order and the place was not busy. Man, I hope this place survives. If it doesn't, it wasn't because of the food. They have a wide variety of all the standard Americanized Mexican fare, and do it up pretty tasty. Drink specials are common and menu prices are reasonable. If you're not sure where to start, pick the burrito zarape with your choice of meat and plan on being full. The ingredients taste fresh and boast nice flavors, and the best part is that there is a nice light guacamole salad along side instead of the usual "rice and refried beans" which can get pretty boring. The reason I'm concerned they might not survive...they are tucked away on Centerpoint Parkway, fairly well hidden and in a general area where employers have done a mass exodus. Mi Zarape is the best use of an Applebees ever! The husband and I ventured to Mi Zarape on one of our latest Taco Tuesday adventures. After eating tacos every Tuesday this year, I am proud to say Mi Zarape is our reigning champ. The salsa was full of flavor, the $6 margarita was larger than my burrito, and the server was entertaining. After receiving our bill, Mi Zarape was also the cheapest Tuesday I've had in a while. Sorry. I don't get it. I see all those positive Yelp reviews. But this place was at or certainly very near the bottom of the barrel. There is not much to say about this place that is positive. The chips were not home made. They were out of the bag and not a particularly good bag at that. And this was the best part of the meal. The salsa was really without any body, texture or taste. The jarred stuff at the Kroger is better. I ordered a # 1 lunch which includes a chili relejno, a taco, some "salad" and some refritos. The chili relejno was stringy and breaded soggy. Yuck. Very reasonable and yummy! I love to get out of the office for lunch and now there's a yummy Mexican restaurant only seconds away, hooray! I have eaten at Mi Zarape twice now, both times for lunch. During prime lunch time (around noon) they had a few tables full, but majority of tables open. The decor is kinda silly, the walls are full Mexican goods like wooden parrots and pots. The waitstaff is friendly and attentive. The menu is extensive and they have awesome "meals" that allow you to have a variety of different items in one dish. I always have trouble deciding between multiple things, so I love that I can order up a combination plate. So far I have tried the Burrito Loco (burrito stuffed with tons of veggies) and vegetarian meal #2 - a cheese enchilada, chalupa and beans. The Burrito Loco was yummy, but didn't fill me up completely. I would order again, but with a side. The vegetarian meal was the perfect amount of food and I will prob stick to the veggie meal options for my next lunch too. I look forward to going back. read more

Please understand that I love Mexican food and I'm usually not that picky about it. I even like those Mexican restaurants in Royal Oak that tend to get bad reviews. (I wonder if Royal Oak just doesn't like Mexican food.). Pretty much anywhere I can get a cheese enchilada, I'm happy. So, I was amazed at how horribly bad this place is. I never knew Mexican food could be that bad. Watery salsa and some sort of weird, runny cheese. I tried it a second time in case it was an off day, but no. Still, no. My first choice for Mexican is Mexican Village in Utica. It's a branch of their Mexicantown restaurant and so good. I just wish there could be a good Mexican restaurant closer to me. read more

Well, my definition of good Mexican food is really hard to find on the side of the country. I have had a few really bad experiences. Fortunately for me this was decent! It's nice to have a few options when the mood for Mexican food strikes. We started with drinks. Dustin had one of the margarita specials, and I had a virgin strawberry daiquiri. Dustin liked his margarita, and it was enormous! My daiquiri being non-alcoholic was a lot like a sweet fruit smoothie. I thought it was great! For dinner I got a combo plate, since I wanted to be able to try everything! The chicken taco was really good. The flavor of the chicken was spot on. I also had the cheese enchilada. Now a cheese enchilada is my litmus test for all Mexican restaurants. You can tell a lot by such a simple dish. The cheese and red sauce need to be just right to make a perfect enchilada. This cheese enchilada was just ok. The cheese was good, but the red sauce was a little too sweet and had a little too much cinnamon in it. I was excited to see sopapillas on the menu, as I used to eat these all the time as a kid. Now I did not realize that there were two schools of sopapillas, soft and chewy or crispy. I grew up on the crispy, and therefore better version. This restaurant has the not as great but still delicious soft and chewy sopapillas. As the quest for good Mexican food continues, it's always exciting to find a reliable option that's not a far commute. read more

I am a regular patron of Mi Zarape since it opened. It has never disappointed, very authentic (for Michigan that is), reasonable prices, and friendly service. The decor and ambiance are a bit lacking, so if you are looking for that experience it may disappoint. It was formerly an Applebees so take your cue from that. The Mariachi Band on Sunday night is a nice treat. Good selection of Mexican Beers and premium tequilas all at fair prices. read more

I'm staying at the Residents Inn Marriott and this restaurant is within walking distance, maybe a five minute walk and easy to get to. I really like it and I found it to be one of my go-to spots. The menu is a good size with a variety of options and fair prices. It's a tad more traditional than tex-mex, but I believe anyone can find something they like. read more

There take out menu is really hard to find online, I called to order the person who answered barely understood English then he complained he couldn't hear me. So I drove to the restaurant ordered my food by the Time I got home which by the way is 5 minutes down the road, my food was xtra soggy the way the packaged the food was very poor everything was in the same container and soggy it was a mess at that point I threw it away it looked gross, I will not be ordering take out ever again, I have yet to dine in but if that happens I surely will give them a chance to redeem themselves 15 dollars is a lot of money to just waste on 3 items...... but for now one the only thing Pleasant was the girl who took my order she was extremely nice. read more
