Attended a birthday celebration here for a friend and everything went great! We had a large party which was seated nicely but then had an additional guest and an extra chair was brought over quickly. Orders, both food and drink, were all done correctly. There was enough room on the table for shared apps, which is always a positive experience because I don't like when there's no space for anything and feel super crammed. Mex is sort of our neighborhood spot. The drinks are always so good and they usually have a special that pops off the menu. Plus the regular menu has everything you could want and all well made and delicious. Somehow we always get a great server with good energy so maybe that's how they all are? The layout is fun and can be loud but it's a good level of loud not the kind that prevents you from talking or enjoying yourself. First time trying this restaurant while visiting Michigan, and overall it was a good experience. The ambience and atmosphere were amazing ,especially since we went during Valentine's Day week with a group of four, which made it feel extra special. The food was mostly good. The starter chips with three different dips were tasty and a great way to begin the meal. The elote corn was fresh and flavorful. My friend ordered the enchiladas, which tasted good, though the sauce was a bit too thick. I ordered the curried taco, but it was lacking sauce and ended up tasting bland. My husband tried the meat taco and shrimp taco and really enjoyed both -- he said they tasted fresh and had great flavor. For drinks, I ordered an espresso martini and asked for a shot of Baileys, but it came with a mix of everything and even had salt on the rim, which was a bit off-putting and not what I expected. Drumroll....... The highlight of the night was definitely the sticky toffee pudding -- it was THE BEST and absolutely worth it! Overall, I was a little hesitant since it had fewer Yelp reviews, but it didn't disappoint. We chose to sit in the bar area which was a good move. The dining area was a bit noisy as we heard the conversation coming from the other area. The bar area is quiet and lighting is dimmer so a bit more relaxing. Chris the bartender had a nice laid back demeanor and provided many refills of our drinks. I had the Fried Chicken Tacos which were delicious! My boyfriend had the Curry Vegetable Tacos. Not too overpowering in flavor and nice change from standard tacos. Revisited MEX in late November on a Sunday night. The place was about half full. Our server was new so she wasn't as acquainted with the menu as she should have been but I won't hold that against her. She did her job adequately. My dinner companions ordered margaritas and reported they were excellent. I ordered the steak fajitas ($28) and they tasted ok but the portion was smaller than expected. The steak was of average quality and there wasn't much of it. In addition they only included three soft tortillas. The four different salsas were ok but nothing to write home about. The salsa the waitress claimed was their hottest seemed mild and flavorless to me. The manager did stop by our table to check up on us which was a nice touch. My take is it's a bit overpriced for what you get but all around the place is an ok dining experience. I believe they opened in 2013 so they must be doing something right. read more

My bookclub met at Mex on a Friday night. We were upstairs away from the busy first floor area. The guac and chips were delicious. The salsas were missing something, not sure what but they were good when I mixed with the guac. Our party was served family style corn and flour tortillas, chicken, curry vegetables, ground chorizo, rice and beans. Everything was delicious. This is a great place to host a birthday party or larger get together without having to rent a space and put down deposits. You will have one bill and 20% gratuity automatically added, but the service was excellent for our group of 20 that all came at different times with kids, etc. Our server did a great job of keeping drinks and food coming out fast, and it was such a nice private setup upstairs. The decor is chic and modern, so it would be a great place to have a girls night or celebration dinner. The "perfect margarita" was pretty perfect, not gonna lie. Fresh citrus and a nice pour of Patron. All the cocktails looked very pretty and all were happy. As for food, I had the roasted vegetable salad with shrimp, and I switched out the balsamic dressing for salsa verde, and it was delicious. A nice selection of roasted and smoky veggies - zucchini, asparagus, red peppers, corn, etc. It was fresh and very tasty. The shrimp were nicely seasoned and cooked perfectly as well. I would order this again. Everyone's tacos looked pretty decent - I think I'd go with the birria just going on looks. Overall, a lovely place to have dinner. And the reason why I am not leaving a five star review, is because I felt like they were stingy with the steak. I had enough to make three VERY slender tacos. Just a tad bit more would have made it perfect. But again, the flavor was great. The salsa was delicious. I really liked their take on black beans. Everything was just super flavorful! Had a mock-a-rita and that was great! My server Sydney and the rest of the staff were so kind to me too! The vibe of this place is great. I was here on a Thursday night. It was very chill. 3 out of 5 stars I stopped by MEX in Bloomfield Hills on a Monday night to take advantage of their all-day happy hour margaritas. My first margarita was fantastic--fresh, flavorful, and reasonably priced. But when I ordered a second one, it tasted completely different. I asked about it and was told their margaritas are on draft and they had just switched over. Unfortunately, that means consistency isn't guaranteed, which was a letdown considering how great the first one was. I ordered a trio of tacos--shrimp, beef, and chicken--and honestly, they were underwhelming. They weren't hot, more like room temperature, and gave me the impression they'd been sitting for a bit. Maybe they weren't, but that's how they came across. On the upside, our server was excellent--friendly, attentive, and doing his best--but there's only so much he can do if the kitchen and bar aren't on point. The space is beautiful and unique (it used to be a Big Boy, which is wild), so I'm willing to give it another shot on a different night. I like the remodeling of this place so much more than what it used to be to look like. The staff are always friendly and smiling. We got the queso and salsa duo. The guacamole appetizers to start the quest was had great flavor the salsa and the chips were very salty but other than that tasted great. I had the shrimp fajitas which were disappointing it only had onions and shrimp and were not very hot. Usually there are at least 3 shrimps per tortilla. I only had 7 pieces of shrimp I was only able make 2 of 3 tortillas. The burrito was huge tasted good but was a bit spicy according to my daughter. My Paloma was one of the best I have tasted. Mex was an okay restaurant. We ordered the Birria tacos, shrimp tacos, the americano, elote, and a margarita. Starting off with the Birria Tacos, they were very cumin and cinnamon heavy. That flavor was very overpowering and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone that doesn't like those flavors. Other than that the Birria tacos were flavorful and good. My mom tasted the rice and beans and she said that they were mediocre. She also said that the classic margarita was sour and could've used more agave. It tasted like a skinny margarita. She also said that the Americano taco was good and flavorful and the shrimp tacos were a bit fishy. 3/5 for mex, if i could 2.5. Only go if you're in the area, wouldn't go out of my way. read more

First time back here in-person since the remodel, though we get take-out fairly regularly. The food here is great. Prices might be a bit high but not out of ordinary for this area. The check-in process still seems to need some work. Both visits (once before remodel, when we had reservations) and now recently post-reno, without reservation, the check-in and seating were a bit of a mess. This time we were told they could seat us in 5 minutes, so we sat down and waited - but then watched them tell the next group 45 minutes and take names - which they had never even taken ours. After 10 minutes we asked and they seemed puzzled about us - so we asked to just sit at the bar, which was OK for immediate seating. Unsure what was going on there. That aside, their food is really great. It was super busy there that night and the bartenders were racing - but checked in on us regularly and were super kind. The margarita flight was super fun and the birria tacos are soooo good. Love their rice - not as much a fan of their beans. Try their elote also! A solid mexican spot in the area! read more

Went here for lunch today and it was great. We sat outside and I liked the covered patio. While I am a little sad they no longer have brunch the lunch was great. We both ordered the Pretty in Pink cocktail and it was delicious. We started off with queso, it was good. It's not on the actual menu but they do have it. This was my first visit since the remodel and my goodness it was amazing! The food here is honestly 10x better than it ever was and it's so pretty inside. Diana waited on us and she took great attention to detail. We had the salsa trio, loaded guacamole and drinks to start and I split the birria quesadillas and shrimp tacos with someone and both were great. Made reservations for a Friday night. Party of two & I didn't have to wait for my friend to get there before being seated. It's a real modern adult vibe. Kind of louder than I expected. They have a smaller menu with a decent variety of items. We started with the chips and salsa. You can choose between 2 or 3 different salsas (and I'm a variety kinda girl so I liked that). I was surprised at how much I did not like this restaurant. If you go during any rush the place is so loud you cannot hear the people sitting next to you or the waiter. The food was fine. However, I will not be paying 19 dollars for two tacos with bad rice and beans again. Mex got a makeover! Not only has the dining room and bar been renovated, but the menu has gotten an overhaul too. The decor is now warm neutrals with a hint of black accents making the dining room comfy and cozy. The bar is now the epicenter focal point of the dining room and the tequila selection has expanded to include a wide array of choices. My favorite menu items include the chips (made fresh in-house daily) with 3 salsas, crispy shrimp and make your own bowl (yum!). Parking is plentiful. Kind of a touchy getting out of there around lunch time since it's right off telegraph and right by a busy traffic light. Your exit/entrance is just before the light. The only reason I deducted a star is our service was a little slow. Our bartender/waiter was knowledgable and very nice when he came to us...but we had to get his attention quite a bit. This was a night out with my dear friend for some fellowship and grown folk conversation. We dined for starters on the classic guacamole and chips. The chips are pretty large. The guacamole was pretty good made with onion and tomatoes. The portion was good for two people with some leftover for tomorrow's lunch. My friend had the charred little gem salad with steak which she said was pretty good. I had the kale salad with salmon which was delicious. The size of the salmon was the size of a deck of cards. I would have liked a larger portion. Langston was our attentive and pleasant server. He was on point with coffee and tea refills even 3.5 hours later! The renovations look really nice, the restaurant is very cute. The ac was blasting though, make sure to bring a sweater or you will be cold. The servers seemed a little uninterested but were decently fast. I am obsessed with the build your own salad for lunch, it is one of my favorites in the area, although can be a bit expensive when you add protein. They give you a sheet with boxes to check of what you want, a few things are extra like guacamole or protein. I think it is otherwise 15$. I get the beets, tortilla strips, Pepitas , corn, cucumbers, tomatoes and 3 cheeses with the salmon. I got the green goddess & cream dressings. I wish they had a traditional ranch dressing as well. The dressings I got were very thick. The salad is big and delicious and I crave it. Most of the time, I take half home. read more

Both the outside and inside of the restaurant are tastefully done. There are two levels of indoor seating plus the bar area and a small outdoor patio with about 6 tables. The staff are very attentive and the service is great! They are happy to accommodate changes on the menus as far as leaving out or adding items. We were here around 4 pm on a Friday and the rush hour traffic made it difficult to enter from South Telegraph trying to do the infamous Michigan left turn. Last weekend I had a chance to visit Mex Bloomfield since it's reopening. It was closed for a while for renovation. It's cute now! I liked it before, but it's even cuter now. It feels light and open. Our server was friendly and the staff interaction at the front desk was also lovely. The from what I can tell menu is similar to what it was before it closed. We started off with a round of Skinny Margaritas. They were well made cocktails, I recommend if you don't want a sweet cocktail. For me the highlight of the meal was the Elote! Very good, an absolute must try. We also ordered chips and salsa with two options, the Mex Fresh and Salsa Verde. The Salsa Verde was the better of the two. The Birria tacos had a good flavor but unfortunately I felt that the beef was pretty tough and dry. Some consomé for dipping would have been a nice addition. I ended up putting a lot of salsa on it so it ended up being okay. I won't get that again. My friend had shrimp tacos that she said were tasty. All 3 salsas were amazing and tasted delicious! None of them were super earthy and had their own individual flavors. My kale salad seemed to have confused itself for a dessert, opting for a lavish drenching in sugar syrup instead of dressing. My coffee embarked on a leisurely half-hour journey to reach me, by which time my dessert was a distant memory. Again, the waitress seemed unfazed by this culinary time travel. The skinny margaritas? So tart, they could start a sour revolution.
