My wife and I split some cocktails the eggroll and sticky ribs, and I had the Szechuan Beef as my entree, and all were delicious! Both of the bartenders (Kody and unfortunately I can't remember the girl's name) were super nice and helpful with recommendations, and service was quick. We've been here twice. It's cute, it's small. Nothing is a bargain in B-ham but both visits surpassed expectation on the food.

They opened back in October of last year. It's next to what used to be the Market North End restaurant. It's busy, then again it's taco Tuesday. It gets really loud inside, almost want to put in my AirPod Pros in to block out the excessive loud chatter, music and the laughing in the background. Place could use some sound dampening in this small place to make it more comfortable. Sat at the bar, need reservations, it's cozy inside. About 9 tables around the bar. Bartender isn't the warmest until you get to know him over your visit some. Ordered a guacamole, asked for their hot salsa, Mexicano, crispy too. $46.64 Guacamole isn't good, it's lemony and chunky. Not a fan of the container, it easily tips over if you try to move it even slightly and has slots where the guacamole falls into that you can't get at all. The chips are good, a tad salty though, still pretty light and crunchy and yummy. The chicken tacos were so-so, was expecting grilled chicken, but it's shredded. The hot salsa is super Smokey from the chipotle peppers, it's so different. Not quite what I was expecting, but okay. Imperials chipotle is more flavorful to me. The mild salsa is super watery and runny, it's like tomato water. Not loving the shreds of white cheese in it much, that's just so odd to me. I thought random drips of plastic or Napa cabbage slaw was in it at first. It's cheese. Just watched this employee in a gray wipe his nose and go right back out to the dining area. I haven't seen him wash his hands yet. Another employee wiped his mouth or something and tossed out the napkin and kept working around the bar as well. :/ My husband didn't like the salad much, the vinaigrette doesn't fit the shredded Napa cabbage bounty and it's much too sweet as for flavor for either of us. It should either be more of a vinaigrette based or lemon based. The crispy chicken was nice and crispy for sure, but rather skimpy of chicken meat for me. The lasts bites for all 3 had no chicken mean in it at all. The chips and guacamole are good, taquitos would be better with more meat in it. The salsa, tacos and salad needs some refining to make it more notable. read more

All the food that we had was delicious. The curled corn was to die for. Everything was very fresh as well. We had the shrimp ceviche and guacamole as apps and they were both delicious. The barbacoa tacos were delicious as well. This place would have been a 4 Or 5 for me but my friend found a hair in her fish tacos :-( they were great about taking it off the bill but didn't seem that apologetic about it. Unfortunately , I'm not easily impressed because I have been continuously disappointed with the food scene in SE Michigan, but Corktown and Ferndale do have great Mexican fare. Well maybe BHam is turning a new leaf for lunch with Employee Meal because I have to say this is the best Mexican I've had in a long time and has to be among the best in the metro area. The second best feature is the prices.... $10-12 lunch tacos. The third best feature is the experience with the clean, cozy and tastefully decorated inside as well as the very considerate staff who easily accommodated our kid. Delicious food at a fair price! Very large portion of guacamole and they kept our chip basket full. Really enjoyed the curled corn and the garlicky potatoes. Tacos were much bigger than expected and everything tasted very fresh and came out hot. We went on a busy Friday evening and were seated right away. Our server was very upbeat and nice, and happily answered our questions and gave suggestions. Wrap around bar in the center of the restaurant with Indoor and outdoor seating. Second leg of the food crawl. This is a trendy, fairly new Mexican spot. Also, not very big in size with an open kitchen and bar in the middle. On a Friday night, we were seated right away. The table next to us had fries that looked amazing! I asked them how they were and they said we should definitely get them! So, of course, we obliged! They were the duck fat fries with cotija cheese and they were, indeed, amazing! We also opted for dry rubbed lamb ribs with lemon and garlic jus. They were really good as well! The ambiance definitely gives off fun, free and upbeat. Our service was good as well. I'd go again and try some other things off the menu. This place is new. We tried to eat here but it was full inside supposedly. We were seated outside but no server came for 10 minutes while 3 people waited on another table of 5. They do not seem to have their act together. This place looks cute and has a cool urban semi street buzz. Checked out this spot recently while waiting for a table at market. We got seated immediately, staff was attentive. Liked the decor indoor with the mirrors, pretty good ambience. Great for date night! Ordered bronzini entree for $36 which came without any sides. The fish was whole and fried and had picked onion which I didn't like as a pairing. The fish itself was unseasoned and quite plain. Ordered a side of rice and beans. The rice was hard and crunchy at times. The beans were good. My friends and I met at EM for an impromptu lunch. It was pretty good. The decor is clean and contemporary. They added a little nostalgia through photographs in the entry and interior. The host and server staff were very friendly. The menu... ok. So the menu is both confusing and simple at the same time. There is a meat of the day and some core items. Those core items are suggested with the Trompo (meat of the day) but you can sub them out. They also have a fried cauliflower option if youre an omnivore. My husband and I decided to try this place out on a Friday evening. We didn't have reservations but got to the restaurant fairly early so we were seated right away. The restaurant itself is small but cozy. Drinks were really good but the star was the ceviche. We ordered the fish ceviche and it was so flavorful. We also ordered the octopus, it wasn't the best, I've had better. For our entrees I ordered the chicken taquitos and my husband got the tacos, both were really tasty. Atmosphere is nice. Small, but comfortable. Despite the place being nearly empty, it was early, the service was slow and our waitress wasn't very attentive. The food unfortunately wasn't any better. We had the ceviche which was large in size but drowning in lime juice. Served with nacho chips, it was practically inedible. We ordered a variety of tacos, all of which were really bland. This is a great new small restaurant next to Market North End in Birmingham. Plenty of street parking in the area. They do take reservations but I dined as a walk in before the dinner rush. The inside has a bar with seating and then some tables in the surrounding area. Definitely a small place but will have outdoor seating as well for warmer weather. The menu had a good variety of specialty drinks, beer and wine. The margarita was average. The food items were very diverse and unique. Started off with the guacamole and chips which was good and seemed freshly made. For dinner then had the Mexican tacos which had a beef/pork blend, tasty and tender! Tried the chicken Taquitos which were crispy and toppings worked well. As a side tried the plantains and they were delicious with a cream sauce on top and red onion. Was very excited to come and try this place for lunch today around 12:15/12:30. Upon arrival the place was empty and no one was around. After saying "hello?" Several times an employee comes out from the kitchen and tells us they don't open until 3. I really wish businesses would do a better job of conveying their hours correctly and not wasting people's time. The food here was spot on! The aguachiles was so fresh and delicious. The octopus was perfectly charred, the tortilla chips were fresh out of the fryer and still warm!! The corn (similar to elote) was so juicy and flavorful! As were the duck fat fries-- those were addicting! We also got the chicken taquitos, the barbacoa tacos and the mexicano tacos-- all were so yummy and the consommé with the barbacoa tacos was so flavorful. They had a nice spice to them! The service was quick, we had gotten all of our food within 20 minutes and we were out within an hour! We sat on the patio which was nice, it was beautiful out. It's always fun to be among the first Yelpers to review a new restaurant. Sorry to say this Yelper missed the opportunity, as we immediately realized upon entering that the dining-out crowd had certainly discovered Em. Designed (at the moment) to accommodate dining in only - no carry-out, no delivery - it is advisable for would-be diners to arrive on the early side, to spare yourself a long wait. When you arrive, you won't see the usual early dining crowd (read - the age of this Yelper or older), but rather a young, hip contingent. The ambiance: jam-packed, with servers moving things along in a friendly yet efficient manner. Our server did his best to keep up the pace, yet we did not feel rushed. If you like to linger over your meal - and afterward - this is not the place for you. In any case, the noise level is a bit too high to allow for much conversation. But what about the food? Here, Em did not disappoint. If you have retained your Spanish from high school or college, you will have an advantage, as all dishes on the menu, as well as menu headings, are en espanol. We started with the guacamole: flavorful, and not overly pureed (gotta love those lumps). Chips may have been house- made - in any case, they were just fine. I had the lamb ribs, which were excellent: good-sized portion of tender and tasty ribs, with a side of fresh spinach, cooked just right - not always the case with this easily-overcooked green. The co- diner got the crispy taquitos, which came with chicken and a side of slaw. Co-diner commented that the slaw was a bit kale-heavy, which was not to his liking, but otherwise gave the dish his hearty approval. We noted two different desserts ordered by nearby diners. One appeared to be a white cake, and the other was gone before we could observe it - always a good sign. Still, we opted to forego dessert, as the noise level was becoming hard to take. In sum, for those who enjoy a busy, noisy dining spot with a variety of interesting dining options, Em is a good choice. You may want to select a weekday to try it, but in any case, you won't be disappointed. read more

Fabulous authentic Mexican food in downtown Birmingham! Was so pleasantly surprised by the quality and variety. If you have ever been to Mexico you know how poorly represented it is here in Michigan well fear not this place has done it. Tacos el pastor cut right off the spit. The salsas are all very different and spectacular. Think I counted 5 different salsas. The chips are fried fresh. We had a whole fried fish that was a flavor bomb. Ceviche done three different ways.
