Went for dinner on a recent Saturday night. Food - wonderful, ambience - spectacular, host/hostess - clueless. We had a reservation for an indoor table and were told outdoor tables on the lovely patio were first come-first served. So, when we arrived for our reservation one beautiful evening, we inquired about an outdoor table. The host and hostess said nothing was available at the moment and were unable to even ballpark when they thought a table might open up. We said, "Ok, well, how about we wait at the bar and when a table opens up you come get us?" Apparently that's too much to ask of the staff; they replied, "We can't do that because it's first come first serve, so if a table opens up and someone else comes in and wants it, you'll miss out because you're at the bar." So we're supposed to hover over the reception desk for the split second a patio table becomes available? Rather than spend more money at the bar enjoying a few cocktails? "You can't just pop your head around the corner if we sit here at the bar and let us know when a table opens up?" we asked. "No, it's first come first served." Ok. We decided to keep our indoor table and sit down right away. Sorry, Mohawk House, you lost out on what would likely have been a $40/$50 bar tab. But it gets better. We ended up in a back room overlooking the patio with big floor-to-ceiling sliding doors. It was a gorgeous late spring evening, and we asked if they could open the doors to better take it all in, but the answer was no because the air conditioning was on. Makes sense: when it's barely 70 degrees outside, you want to make sure that a/c is cranked up! Staff was perfectly nice, but the common sense factor was questionable. Food was really good, nice wine, beautiful place. We'll definitely be back on another summer evening...next time, without a reservation and a plan to grab a drink from the bar and plant ourselves smack in front of the reception desk to await an outdoor table. Second time to this restaurant and last. Friends and business colleagues have repeatedly asked me to give this place another chance (since they want the holiday party there I'm sure lol) after my first disappointing visit. That visit was really disappointing on the service end, with various mishaps, unfortunately this visit was a service issue as well. An severely over cooked steak, and a server check back that occurred 15 mins later (a real 15 minutes mid you.). When charging $51 for an steak, you need to cook it right the first time. When there are expensive steaks on the table, check backs need to be quick to ascertain correct degrees of doneness, in case of a mistake. When our check-back finally occurred, my family was well into their entrees (and also truly not enjoying them) as they were concerned that I was not eating.....a nice double whammy. Although a recovery attempt was made with some poundcake with strawberry compote, it was a moot point. $500 dinner and a wasted special occasion. There was no manager presence and certainly no visit either time....... I do not recommend. Poor service, poorly executed food and poor floor management makes for a poor experience! read more

Elegant rustic decor - very pretty inside and out. Good wine and craft beer selections. The farm-to-table thing is not just hype. Soup and salads were delicious (Salads were big. Could easily split one). Side dishes too - mushrooms especially - really yummy. But we had come to try the Tomahawk and that was a bit of a letdown. The presentation is impressive, and much of it was tender and delicious, but it had a LOT of fat throughout. 50 oz. sounds like a huge serving, but after trimming, it was just enough for two. Ended up with the ultimate doggie bag for my dogs, but don't think I'd order one again. Will definitely be back again though. Scallops my wife had were perfect and the service was top-notch. Was planning on coming up here for quite sometime to see what it's all about. Arrived around 3:30 on a Monday and was surprised to find seats at the bar for happy hour. The location was easy to find without GPS (just follow the signs off 15) and there was tons of parking. The building from the outside is architecturally on point. The inside consisted of wood floors, high ceilings and interesting decore (old dentist chair near the hostess ) Seated my self at the bar and was immediately greeted by one of the bartenders, James. He presented me with a drink menu and a food menu and directed me to the Autumn specials and also the happy hour specials. The menu has quite a large selection. Everything from an extensive raw bar/sea food section, lots of vegetarian options and of course tons of steaks. I decided to give a couple of the happy hour items. Ordered the calamari, Thai Chili wings, and the White deer pizza to start and a Mohawk burger as well, medium. Now when I go to establishments like this with expirenced bartenders I like to challenge them a little bit and really put their skills to the test. I gave James two requirements for my drink and told him to make what comes to mind. Three things I liked....1. He made the drink right in front of me. This may seem like a small detail but I really enjoy watching my drink being made and seeing what goes in and also the skills they have. 2. When presenting me with the drink he explained every ingredient and how they worked together. 3. He made sure I enjoyed the drink and didn't just leave me stuck with it after he dropped it off. The best part is it was delicious!!! I was able to get 2 more of James hand crafted cocktails with my meal. All in all the food was very good. Burger was a little on the well side but the fresh ingredients made up for it wholeheartedly. Pizza and wings were both on point and the calamari was a large size. What you would expect from happy hour food. The bartenders are extremely attentive and knowledgeable. Came today for Easter and everything was great. The ambience is really nice. Love the look of the place! The food was also wonderful we liked everything we ate. We started with the carrot soup and lobster Mac and cheese. Next was our entrees. I had the filet mignon and it was cooked perfectly. My mom had the salmon which I tried and also loved. My dad had scallops which were cooked to perfection. I was impressed especially on a holiday. For dessert we had the lava cake and the carrot cake in a mason jar. The carrot cake was the stand out! As for service it was a little lacking however they were super busy being it is a holiday it really wasn't that bad. Bottom line: what you expect from a high end dining spot. Delicious food, top notch service, at a price. Surprisingly nice draft list too. Gluten line: high end places aim to please, and this was no different. No gluttening. Celiac friendly. Long line: came here for a large group, private party dinner. Holy crap, this is the life. Service was perfectly attentive, food was spectacular, and they even had a bunch of random big boy drafts like Russian Imperial stouts and barleywines as well as locals. My steak was outstanding. The seafood tower was impressive. And the desserts? They were pretty good (admittedly I'm not big on desserts, #carnivore). Christmas Eve dinner. The restaurant was fairly busy, but not busy enough to excuse the horrible experience we had tonight. First issue: We were brought dinner rolls by our server, but no plates to eat them off of. After 5 minutes of not seeing anyone to ask, we resorted to eating them off of the tablecloth. I ordered a filet, medium rare. My husband ordered a strip steak, medium. Second problem: My filet showed up medium, and his strip steak was extremely medium rare. Not ideal, but theoretically survivable. Except that the server had taken our table knives when she cleared our appetizer, and did not bring any steak knives with our meals. So here we are with our steaks in front of us, getting cold because we can't eat them. We were eventually able to flag down another server and ask for knives, and our side dish that never showed up either. She asked who our server was, and eventually our server came over. She said that our side wasn't ready yet - and get this - the restaurant had no steak knives left and she had no idea when she would be able to get us any. Honestly - WHAT???? So we asked why she brought our meals out if we can't eat them and she said "so they weren't sitting in the window getting cold." Okay. So now they're sitting in front of us getting stone cold. Perfect. I don't know how long later - far too long - she eventually brought our side. And someone else ran over with two very greasy steak knives that hadn't been cleaned properly. Even better, my filet could only be best described as a bottom round. It was utterly inedible, and not just because it was cold. I literally had to spit some of it out onto my plate because I couldn't even chew through it. My husband was kind enough to share his strip steak with me, and we just left the filet on the plate. We paid the bill and left - just to walk out to an enormous cloud of cigarette smoke hitting us square in the face. It was a laughable (and disgusting) end to a really terrible experience. 2 stars, only for previous experiences that have been quite a bit better than this one. read more

I've been coming to Mohawk House for 10+ years for Christmas Eve dinner. Has always been high-priced by Sparta, NJ standards, but high quality. Tonight's experience convinced me to never come back. Service was horrible -- waited 20 minutes for a drink -- and my wife and daughter were served a 3-ounce glass of wine which we were charged $14. i ordered what I thought was a pint of beer but was given an 8-ounce glass. Excellent excellent excellent! My best friend just had her bridal shower here a few weekends ago and I instantly fell in love with the location, food and atmosphere. We had the whole back room that over looked the baci ball courts and it was honestly a beautiful picture perfect day. The decor is old and rustic which was absolutely beautiful. The food was to die for! I started out with the mushroom soup that honestly knocked my socks rite off with the subtle hints of truffle. It was so warm and yummy I could honestly slurp that back in all of 5 seconds. For my entree I ordered the short rib and girl let me tell you that was fall apart tender as hell. I was in heaven. I heard Seal singing in the back as I placed my first mouthful and both the bride and my eyes met and we both were sitting there thinking wow food porn! Every bite just got better and better. Somehow snagged a somewhat last minute reservation here on New Year's Eve. Can't believe it happened because this place was packed! And for good reason. The restaurant is within a gorgeous structure. Beautiful interior, with cozy, rustic, mountain vibes. The fireplace downstairs is beautiful. Would've loved to sit downstairs on the main level. Food was great! I had the filet mignon (I think they had a special New Year's Eve menu that night). Didn't want the steak to end. Boyfriend had ribeye steak I believe, which is his absolute favorite. My sides were green beans and potatoes au gratin. Perfect steak and potatoes meal. I'm interested in returning to try other neat things on the menu. And dessert. Omg. Let me start with the positive. Service was excellent thus a one rating. Now for the food. I got the Chilean sea bass which I smelled 4 feet away from me. Taste was not good and the size of the fish was 2 inches by 1. Couldn't believe they charged 48.00 for that. I should have returned it but figured my cat would like it. He's been vomiting now for 12 hours. Shame on me for serving him that. My husband got the double porkchops who said it wasn't tasty at all and because of the thickness it was too dry. Mohawk House is our favorite restaurant in the area and we dined there yesterday for Thanksgiving and were terribly disappointed. We've been there at least 8-10x before over the last 2 years and always left happy with the food and service, but never had been there for TG. Total surprise to leave dissatisfied, especially at $54/person. They didn't have biscuits, which we thought was a big miss since it was TG. They also didn't have mashed potatoes and the stuffing and cranberry sauce were both bleh to say the least. Our server, Mark, was great. We had him a couple times before and he's definitely one of their best servers. He checked on us several times and was extremely personable. I'd not recommend Mohawk House at all for your TG meal should you choose to go out, but would in general for a typical Saturday night dinner. We also hope that it's sister restaurant, Industry, doesn't end up hurting Mohawk House. read more

I have to say I was quite underwhelmed by The Mohawk house, it came recommended because I was looking for a place that carried Tomahawk steak for my husbands 50th birthday/ Retirement from law enforcement. Needless to say I was disappointed (not necessarily with the tomahawk) but the complete service and quality of food. Everything that I order was lacking. The lamb pops were over cooked, The lobster Mac and cheese was not as pictured (over cooked and not creamy) The creamed spinach was horrible and we ordered two tomahawk steaks (one came out on time the other was not what we ordered , so we had to wait additional time for the second to come out which came out wrong and had to be sent back. However our saving grace was our wonderful waitress Sarah, very attentive and very apologetic of the situation. She was extremely helpful and on top of things trying to correct the issue. She even brought us out a cake for my husbands birthday and and assortment of other cakes to try.. my husband spoke with the manager whom he said was very nice but he never came to my table to address me . Terrible staff at the door. They sat our guests who arrived minutes before us and when we arrived they told us to wait for the other guests. We were very clear about our reservations. We waited for 20mins until one of the guests came and found us. The 2 staff women NEVER even apologized. They acted as if this was no big deal. This was beyond rude, not to take ownership. Had some trouble finding the place so don't follow the Yelp address/location. It's on 517, right before the intersection with 181. It's behind the Methodist Church (which is across from the Shell gas station). Pointing out landmarks b/c we totally passed the place but didn't actually notice it - it's kind of on a hill but there is a sign by the road. I had a fantastic experience here. On all counts. Service: Exceptional. From the second we walked in. Hostess was super nice, friendly. Bartender was fantastic. Tom welcomed us from the moment we walked into the bar area and was super friendly and accommodating. Offered us water when we didn't ask for it (this is a huge bonus in my book because I always forget to ask for water!) Helped us get set up outside after we decided to eat out there and even came out and checked on us. Location/ambiance: Beautiful spot. The outdoor seating is so nice. Since I don't live around there, it's a huge deal for me to sit outside and see a horizon of green treetops and a picturesque sunset. They have bocce ball back there too and spots to just sit and relax and enjoy the view. The restaurant itself is really cozy too. Has a mountain lodge sort of feel. The bar area has a large window that overlooks the beautiful view as well. There is a fancier dining room as well, outdoor seating or the bar area. So depending on how you're feeling - you've got options. Beer: Great selection. They do flights and you can select either 4 or 6. Food: Only tried the pizza but it was very good. Out for a weekend in Sparta, NJ. Was looking forward to having a meal with friends. The friends part was fine. The meal part not so fine. Surprised and chagrinned at the service. The waitress was charming, the boy that brought the food was lost. Had know idea as to how the folks were seated. The tent had no lighting, so as it got darker and darker we requested a light. They provided one small candle that didn't help. For the next hour we used three cell phone flashlights on water glasses to allow us to see everyone at the table. Meals were overpriced ($175.00 for two of us and no we did not order the tomahawk steak), undersized and underwhelming! The filet came on a plate alone, just a sprig of green would have helped the presentation. The steaks and fish were cooked properly (hats off to the chef), mushroom soup was excellent and the desserts were very good. Finally I experience a first, we had the bill, signed our credit card vouchers and no one was there. The lights were off, everyone was out of the parking lot. We walked through the dark around the tents to our car. Assume someone was somewhere, but seemed like they just locked up and went home without knowing we were still there. read more

We just celebrated our Godson's 25 birthday here last Sunday and have immediately become a fan. The location, kind of hidden up on a hill, requires sharp eyes but worth reading Yelp for location tips (that's what we did)! The main room is cavernous - like a castle dining room. Classy and cool at the same time. The lighting was "romantic" but if you are like me, a member of the AARP set, you might call it dim. After reading the recommendations from fellow Yelpers, my wife and I had their chicken. In a word, wow! Inventive use of cheese, spice and, wait for it, bruschetta topping mark the dish. Moist chicken perfectly cooked. The potatoes were flavored with a hint of lemon and cooked with a golden crust. I tried the Yelp-recommended scallop wrapped in bacon appetizer. Fresh seafood and crisp bacon make this a smart choice. Our fellow diners had a variety of dishes - steak, short ribs (a rave) and the lobster special. All made yummy noises and were pleased with their selection. Service was efficient and professional - a pleasant surprise for very suburban Sparta. This out of the way eatery hits all of the notes. Great food, inviting atmosphere, professional service and prices that reflect the quality. A winner. Note: they are known for their beer selection, but we didn't have any on this trip. Still my favorite restaurant. Boyfriend and I sat outside for a late lunch on a Sunday. We shared a corn soup, tuna tacos and an ostrich burger. All delicious!!! We also shared their s'mores dessert. Omg so much yum. Only reason I took off a star is because our server was a little MIA. I'm just being picky. He was super nice, very pleasant and professional. And In their defense, it was 3 in the afternoon. Odd time for dining, so that's probably why it was a little slow going. I have been an extremely loyal customer of the Mohawk House since it originally opened, and also hosted a bridal shower there as well. We've always been so happy with the food and service, but today's experience may make us not come back. I came with my grandchildren and asked for a table for 5 and a high hair and the hostess dismissively said "we don't do high chairs" - and actually started to walk away from us!!! I felt so uncomfortable that I tried to jokingly reply "do you not allow kids anymore" to which the hostess snapped "I mean we have chairs we can give him... it's a chair just not a high chair" I have been here over 10 times with my grandkids who need high chairs, and although this is what I would consider a higher-end establishment, I've always felt welcome bringing the kids. I have never felt so unwelcome at a restaurant before in my life. I understand that this hostess might be stressed or new, but that is no way to treat someone. We let her know that we probably couldn't stay, to which she actually mumbled "whatever" and walked away!!!!! read more

Beautiful restaurant. I go there once or twice a year. For Sparta and the surrounding area---they get 5 stars. However if you want to compare the place to other restaurants in Morristown (which isn't that far)- then Mohawk House still has beautiful interior and exterior views but: 1. The menu is very dated. I only go there once or twice a year and can tell you what to expect to be on the menu. 2. I don't mind high priced plates but if your going to charge Manhattan prices then I expect the best of the best. And sorry the food is good but it isn't the best of the best. I know the place is popular but like I said if you want the best place locally that is five stars- this is where you want to go on a date, meeting, etc. But comparing it to Morristown- they are 3 stars because Mohawks pricing puts it in that league that everything is perfect. And I'm sorry it's not the case. Also their bar is awesome if the drinks were consistent. At a minimum of $13-$15 a drink they again should be perfect. Almost every time a drink has come out it isn't consistent and again it's okay but not perfect. I don't want to give anyone the wrong idea if you don't want to drive and you don't mind spending $200 for 2 people and have the best LOCAL meals then go there. Also the service is top notch. Never had a bad server. Whoever is in charge of the server training has their servers comparable to what you'd expect from a 5-star NYC restaurant. read more

Marylynn was an excellent server. She was Knowledgeable about the whole menu and made great suggestions on food and wine pairings. She was attentive without being intrusive, She is the star of the show at this restaurant. My group of girlfriends and I had an eclectic mix of meals and apps and they were all phenomenal. Some of our favorites were the Squash ravioli, Scallops wrapped in bacon and Crab cake for appetizers. For the entrees I would suggest the Sea Bass or Filet mignon, both were mouth watering! Rustic, farm to table restaurant located in Sparta, NJ. I expanded my usual tastes buds and had the wild mushroom soup with a filet mignon sandwich. The chef put truffle olive oil in with the mushroom and it was a delight. The atmosphere really heightens the experience at Mohawk. It's a great date night spot or place to reserve a private party. Go here! Very cool farm to table restaurant with a bar and live music. I had the truffle mushroom soup and lobster risotto with Chilean sea bass. The sear was perfect on the fish but the risotto was so rich and delicious I could only eat half. The Augratin potatoes that were a shared side were amazing! (Like Mac and cheese but with potatoes!) The service was just ok. We had one waitress for a table of 15. She did her best but we should have probably been assigned another server. We were waiting for silverware and for everyone's dinner to come out and during the process many meals came out and were waiting so they got cold. But also many things came out cold...my fish was hot and the risotto was lukewarm. The dessert (apple pie) was lukewarm and would have been better if it was piping hot. The truffle fries were a bit under cooked. We also waited 10 minutes to valet park which was a bit annoying. My hub said his food was typical of any other high-end steak house. Overall it was a good experience and I would return. Despite the opportunities for improvement overall it was a very good dining experience and I'd return...especially for those augratin potatoes! read more

Okay. I have to be fair and give them a good review that they deserve after beating them up on my last review. Had a great meal last night in a private group room with a price fixed menu. Apps were lamb chops, crab cake, or scallops with a marmalade. Main course was an awesome bone in ribeye, salmon with wild rice, or free range chicken. And followed by a dessert molten lava cake a la mode or bourbon vanilla ice cream. The waiters were spot on, and super helpful. And everything was cooked fantastically. I think their A Teams work there on the weekend! :) They were super accommodating to our group, and helped us with our party activities. The rest of the place was crowded but the wait didn't seem too bad. The valet parking is still a mess. but they seem to move everybody through there well. thanks. You should probably make reservations and plan on a loud energetic evening on the weekend. The last time, the group was on a smaller price plan per person and it may have been a bad day for the staff. This time, they really stepped it up! Nice job. read more
