Do not purchase hens from Modesto Feed without looking at them carefully. On April 12, 2024, my…read morehusband and I purchased 8 hens ($15 each) that were approximately 4 1/2 months old. I asked the owner if I could view and select the hens first, and I received a grumble in return. As I was paying for the chickens and feeders, he was already on the way to our truck and loading the chickens into the kennel we brought. I didn't get to study them closely beforehand as I had asked. By the time we got them home (Angels Camp) and into the chicken yard, I realized that most of them had runny "noses." I was hopeful that our brand new coop, new feeders, new dust bath, new everything, and the 400 sq ft foraging yard with healthy organic sprouting grains would nurse them back to health. One and a half weeks later, the first hen died. When I called to speak to the owner, he simply said, "chickens die." Five month old chickens? I asked where I could get a necropsy to find out the exact cause of death. The owner gave me some info but didn't seem interested in the cause of death, even though they were sick when I purchased them. In May, three more of my precious chickens passed--all birds that had been eating and drinking well, and playing chicken games. I will call the owner again to inform him that I will be submitting today's dead chicken for a necropsy. He should be concerned about the quality of the poultry he is selling.
