My husband and I recently have started going back to the Modern for lunch on occasion. We used to love it, but then the food started not being as good as it used to. However, we gave it another shot and it's gotten a lot better. I highly recommend giving it a try. The food is delicious, reasonably priced and large portions. My only complaint is they need to work on bringing back their original egg flower soup. This one is good, but I would never get it to go because you can tell it's got too much gelatin and whatever is added it's a little pink, but overall it's good. Anyone who quit going needs to give them another chance because it's definitely our favorite Chinese food in town. Let's get this family establishment huge again like it used to be. read more

Just left this place and came to del taco as the alternative (yes, del taco). Ordered the Mongolian Beef, it was pretty terrible. Very slimy, dried chow mein noodles were stale, carrots were literally hard as rock, then the gristly inedible chunks of fat and sinewy bits of meat, just not good at all. I ask if it was possible to get something else, guys tells me he has to ask the boss. Comes back and says they were closing soon, it was 7:30pm, so no, they will not make me something else but I will have to pay half price for the terrible food I did not even come close to finishing. I told I will pay the half price and they have lost me and my family as customers. Bad food, horrible service. I will hit up Panda Express before this place. read more

I thought the food was good and plentiful except for the egg roll. That was not good. Service very friendly. Prices very reasonable.

I used to love this place as a kid. We first got water that seemed to be in dirty glasses. The condiments are were very sticky. Service was okay except the part where the menu says our meal came with tea and they said no they don't do that anymore. Then take it off the menu and offer it to buy. General Tao's, egg roll and soup was bland. Pineapple chicken was nice hot and crispy but had no pineapple chunks and was more vinegary. The broccoli was cooked perfectly but not much meat and the beef was a bit tough but still edible although too salty. I would imagine this is probably good for Walla Walla not many choices of places to go on Sunday evenings. We will likely not eat here again but I know many people who like this place. It was subpar to us as we are not from this area and have more choices. read more

Literally couldn't eat any of the food it was so gross. Ordered a meal for two people. Neither of us could take more than a couple bites. You get a LOT of food for your money here! Go for the lo mein if you want soft noodles, and you'll have enough food for at least a week (that might be an overstatement if you are a big eater). The other lunch specials are not soft noodles, so if you want a particular type of noodle, you'll want to check the menu items carefully. The place has been here for a very long time (with different owners over the years), and it could use a little facelift, but the food is plentiful and cheap. I'm not a fan of their egg rolls (have had better elsewhere)--not saying that you might not like it (just my own preference). I don't get the negativity. This place has by far the best lunch specials of all.. anywhere. Not too forget you need to lift weights to carry these out. They give you awesome huge portions. We have ordered to go at least 5 times... everything is always piping hot. The pineapple chicken is consistent and yummy...the sweet and sour is really good too. I went out of my comfort zone and ordered some lo mein on the lunch special and it was surprisingly delicious. It fed 3 people with enough to be leftover! Good little place to get a cold drink in he hot summer. My buddy goes here all the time. Big pours in the bar with a lot of good friendly patrons here. The bartender lady is so sweet too. The beers are always cold too. I did not try the food yet. But I heard it pretty good. read more

Where do you get an enormous portion lunch special for under 8 dollars anymore? We got lunch togo very fast, hot, and delicious with enough for leftovers! Nice gentlemen helped us, we ordered again the next day pineapple chicken and sweet and sour pork and the lo mein and egg foo young lunch special was all delicious. I especially liked the pineapple chicken! Delicious sauce and big chunks of breaded chicken. This was highly recommended to us, and I understand why. Very worth it. read more

Not your fancy chinese with an equally high price. But if you want decent chinese with a ton of food and a great price, this is your place. We particularly like the salt & pepper shrimp, the almond subgum chicken, and great fried egg rolls. Their seasonal specials with asperagras are also great. The pineapple chicken come with the sauce on and is a family favorite. Like any other chinese restaurant, you have to learn what dishes to order. Not all chinese places make dishes the same way. Perfect cheap Chinese food with super fast delivery. We order from here at least every two weeks. Large pork fried rice, sweet and sour chicken and beef with broccoli easily feeds our family of four with lots leftover for dinner the next night. We never spend more than $30. Lots of negative comments about the pineapple chicken. It's not bad, but not great either. Best to stick with the classics. The main reason we go is for the pork fried rice...huge serving (feeds 6) for about $4. read more

You definitely get more than enough food for the money you spend and some of the options we found to be decent. However, there are a few options that come waaaaay over breaded and there wasn't enough sauce on what was breaded to make the flavor stand out. A lot of it tasted the same. I have to say this was the worst Chinese food I have tasted since LaChoy chow mein in a can! We had the famous "Signature" Pineapple Chicken, which had been warmed up in a microwave and just the sauce put on! NOTHING like the original owners signature dish! Vegetarian Egg Foo Young. Which was the star of the night! I use the term loosely! But... The most foul dish to grace the table was the Pork Fried Rice, if you could even call it that! It was steamed rice with soy sauce dribbled over it, a scrabbled egg and some...chicken chunks???? What, chicken in "Pork" Fried Rice?? The original owners should have had a clause in the sale to rename the restaurant and never serve a famous dish I loved. This was a total embarrassment to my partner who wanted to try the Signature Dish I have talked about for years. No wonder no one was in the restaurant on a Friday night. The restrooms were disgusting, sticky tables,no wait staff and a desolate parking lot... good riddance! It wouldn't even get one star if I had the option! read more

This is highly Americanized Chinese food. There's a bar in the back with that Veteran's use as a meeting point. The place looks deserted, unless you're eating at the bar with the Vets. Still, food can be tasty and unauthentic. It's definitely comfort food, bacon friend rice need I say more. If you eat in there's a pool table in the bar are, if not $2 delivery charge in WW & $3 to College Place. The portions are large. Following a disappointing visit to another Chinese restaurant in town, Girlfriend and I were despairing the loss of decent Chinese food since leaving big cities. One night, in a fit of hunger and laziness, we decided we'd try the one down the street due to its being cheap and right there. Not hoping for much, we headed to the somewhat ironically-named Modern Restaurant; it proceeded to re-kindle my hope that Chinese people do not forget how to make good food once they move out of a major metropolitan area. Their spring rolls are a little weird - they're kinda just egg rolls without meat in them. The main course was great, though. I hedged my bets with General Tso's/Gao's/Tao's (I forget which it was, but it seems like all Chinese Generals love the same kind of chicken), laughing at the little red pepper next to its name on the menu. But get this - it was actually spicy! Not face-melting hot, but considering how often that little pepper means nothing at all, I was really excited. Girlfriend got pork moo shu, and it was very light and flavorful with crispy vegetables. I don't know enough about it to know why some places make great moo shu and others make depressing meaty coleslaw, but I've had both kinds and this was a good one. The prices were really reasonable - I think we spent $21 on the meal - and service was really attentive. I don't think I ever got my water glass below half-full. If I had just chugged it, the waitress probably would have been pouring over my shoulder to get the glass full before it hit the table. I almost felt bad. They were playing a top-40 country music station, which struck me as weird and hilarious, but on reflection, I might just have some kind of latent racism that I didn't know I needed to deal with. I have only been to two chinese restaurants in my life that I like, and this is one of them. I am a meat and potatoes kind of guy who would rather have macaroni and cheese then some foriegn food, but for some reason my dates always want to go out for chinese. I always end up getting american fare at these restaurants, some weird hamburger and oily fries, or trying some rice. So when I went to the Modern restaurant I did not expect much. Even worse the reason I was going was because my date is a vegetarian, and the modern restaurant was listed as having good vegetarian food. I must say my hopes were not high at all. When we arrived the wait staff was very attentive, and seated us right away. I ordered my american fare, and my date ordered some meatless pineapple chicken. When the food arrived I had been smelling something wonderful from the table next to mine and asked the waitress about it, it was some pork fried rice. I went ahead and ordered some. Now my date loved the meatless chicken dish she recieved and I must say when they brought me this huge plate filled with the pork fried rice I loved it. Since that day I have been a convert, I love this restaurant and I think that they have accounted for about 15 pounds I have gained, as I could eat the rice any day of the week, and what is left over my dog loves....I know weird huh. I have been back many times, and yes they do play country music, and the decor could have been installed in the 70's but it just sort of gives it that odd charm that makes it not a cookie cutter restaurant. If you want good chinese food, I am not sure, as I have only had the pork fried rice and the barbaque pork, which is excellent as well, my girlfriend recommends this place to all her vegetarian friends, so maybe give the place a try, I think you may like it. Oh and the price for me and my date was under $18 and we had plenty to take home for my dog. read more

First impressions right. . . A totally barren parking lot should have been the first clue. We can here because the Pacific Express was packed. We were seated quickly, but then waited and waited and waited. The table was sticky and there were kids running around. Staff/owners dressed in jeans, shirt, and vest/coat. Not sure if she was coming or going. Once she took our order, soup and pork was on our table within a minute. When she finally brought my beer, we had to wait and wait to get her attention to get a glass for the beer. She brought a nasty glass that you could still see someone else's lip marks on. Hands down the worst Chinese food we have ever had anywhere. It was obvious they were not "into it" anymore, as evidenced by a Christmas wreath still on the door and a bar that had more people in it than the restaurant. Still, it was early so we thought the dinner crowd just hadn't come in yet and ordered. The egg drop soup, usually in clear chicken broth with "dropped egg swirls, was dark, eggs looked scrambled, zero green onions, and way too much salt. We couldn't choke it down. Then dinner for two came, gigantic portions but bigger isn't better. Dry pork fried rice tasted like styrofoam, egg rolls but no sweet and sour sauce, Fatty bbq pork with ketchup and hot mustard but no sesame seeds. But the worst - the almond chicken, (normally my favorite) was battered fried but the batter was raw under the top layer. I spooned it out like toothpaste and toothpaste would have tasted better. Beef chow yuk - WAS yuk. Even the vegetables had a very strange taste. I almost laughed when he asked if we wanted boxes. Go to Ming Court around the corner. Delivery can be slow at times from 30 minutes to 1 hour, but worth it for the amazing food. For the amount you pay for food, you will get A LOT to eat. (Ex.
